I have been shop forever and I'm finally here. The store is kind of small, but it's very cozy and you can tell that they decorate it themselves. The chef was outside helping out and he was super nice very friendly. He was very enthusiastic about his dessert and was introducing it to us. We went when the store is almost closing, so there wasn't that many selection left, but we got the vanilla custard and that was so good full of the vanilla flavor. It's not overly sweet and feel very light. It was so good that I even got another one to take home with me. They also have a good selection of Macaron and they are not overly sweet. They are very light and the seasoning was really well. The cake was also really good. I got one of the chocolate walnut cake and that one was very rich with coffee flavor. I love it. I will definitely come back again. read more

The descriptions and prices are not marked on the display case, but the employees (owners?) there were more than happy to list them all out. Honestly, they really need to include signs and probably allergen information as well. But I'm not sure if the owners opt to omit the signage on purpose to encourage conversation. The cakes were good and the pricing was fair. Limited seating available. Overall, I enjoyed the pastries and would come back if I'm craving some European style cake. read more

I just had the most amazing birthday cake from here tonight! The decor was so elegant, fresh, & beautiful that the first cut was almost painful. But, I got past that and landed into heavenly pleasure. Each layer...the lime, blackberry, vanillas..I am so glad there are people and places that make this magic. The last time I came & bought cake here was before covid. I decided to buy again this time. I pre ordered online. The next day I have to call them to pay the order. The lady who answer the phone was rude. I thought she's asking me what is the order,(i guess she said what is the order for) when I said I pre order the mango mousse cake, she rudely saying, 'a lot of people order the mango cake everyday, how do i know, (she keep saying something) so i realized she actually asking for my name. I gave my name, card & tried to finished the transaction but I wasn't happy already, & my tone changed. I felt she's rushing me also and not even say thank you. A little bit waiting on the pick up day because only one person in the store, but the guy gave my order and answer my question w/c are there best seller for the mini cake, so i bought 2. The mango cake is still good and also the quava mini chessecake,1st time i tried. read more

I ordered online and it was very straightforward! I did have some confusion as I placed it on Monday and it was required to call in to receive the cake on Wednesday, however, Marcia reassured me that I can pay when I pick up the cake on Wednesday. If you're in the same boat, don't worry! You can pay for it when you pick it up if you place it on Monday. Marcia was incredibly sweet and reassuring about my ordering and she took her time in explaining the different offerings that they had and what staff is responsible for what. She also told me to be more assertive which was an invaluable life lesson taken with cake. The other patrons were very kind as well, and made the whole experience of going to Masse's very memorable and very sweet. The cake was for my sister's graduation from SJSU (Go Spartans!) and the display, the writing, the fruit, it was gorgeous. She loved the flavor as well and the cream with the berries. I was very happy that she was happy! I also got a guava and apple tart (pictured below, the guava was eaten so fast that we couldn't get a picture)! The guava tart was rich, and beautiful, and had a perfect balance of sweet and tart. The apples and the butteriness of the apple tart served as was a perfect balance of everything. The total came out to be ~$63 which was incredible for the quality, the taste, and everything. Parking can be tricky as there are very little spaces out in front, but it can work with some walking! read more

So it was one of those day that required cafe lattes, mini cakes and mini tarts. The delicious tarts were an Apple Frangipane and a Fig Frangipane. My minicake was Mango Mirror, a golden sponge cake layered with mango and mango mousse with a mango mirror glaze . My husband's was Ricotta Guava Cheesecake, a delicious Italian style ricotta cheesecake with a hazelnut sable crust with a guava glaze. I love Masse's so it made sense to get our wedding cake here. Called the store to give them some basic details and confirmed everything in a tasting at the store. We got a small one tier chocolate hazelnut cake as my friend is Celiac (pictured). This was so freaking good. and Paul and Marcia were super enthused about our cake toppers and picked the flowers which fit our scheme. The sheet cake for our 100 guests was the ruffle torte. I actually didn't try any that night but I really loved it at our tasting. A friend who typically isn't into desserts told me she typically avoid cakes at weddings but devoured the entire slice at ours. Paul showed up perfectly on time to drop off the cake and sheet cake and it was so pretty when it was revealed. Would recommend for weddings and I'm definitely going back! read more

We have been going to Masse's for years now as a family for cakes to celebrate graduations, birthdays, and more! We love that they offer full size cakes and minis, which is what we typically opt for so we can try a variety. The owners are very friendly and helpful when deciding what to get. The cakes are more mousse like than your typical cake, that can oftentimes be heavy. Our favorites are the raspberry chocolate, coconut, and passion fruit. At this point we've probably tried all their flavors and you can't go wrong. read more

Love it here! My go to bakery for birthdays and special occasions. They don't have a lot of hours, so make sure you check before you go. But, their cake ordering policy is pretty forgiving. They have a lot of gluten free cakes, and delicious pastries. I recommend the eclair! read more

They seems to be extremely busy. I ordered in advance for future pick up. The lady on the phone was kind of rushing. I understand it's a small family business and I believe their customers would be appreciated with a little better services. The Mont blanc I tried was heavily sweetened. It's made in a rough craftsman. Not like the ordinary delicate French pastry. I expected better with the price I paid. I do not know what's the authentic Mont Blanc tastes like. Just wish they could have put some sponge cake in there and with stronger chestnut flavor, not sugar. It was sugar-loaded whipped cream in the middle. The pastry overall was fresh. Indoor seating is not opened. Take out only. Also, I don't see pricing on the wall or on anything of their display fixture. No menu either. read more

Cake is my favorite food. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Masse's pastries. I've had 3 cakes from here, and every one blew my mind. They're very much not your typical American cake, which I find too plain. They have varying layers of curd, sponge, mousse, ganache, glaze, other textures of sponge too. Much like Asian style cakes, but with Western flavors and flair. I've had their Opera cake, lemon currant cake, and raspberry chocolate cakes, and I'm making my way down the list. If you forget to order in advance, they might have some on hand, which you can call in about. read more

Super nice folks running this incredible bakery in the North Berkeley neighborhood since 1997. They have a full selection of cakes, cookies, cheesecake and tarts. The macarons come in many different flavors and are hard to say no to. What I love about this place is that they emphasize the flavors of each pastry without using too much sugar. Such a cute little local shop with SO much variety. We got a bunch of pastries for friends so ended up getting more than half the types in their shop! It makes me sad to say that they were all just okay! The servers and staff were so nice and this place seems like an institution in the neighborhood. You could also tell that they use high quality ingredients so everything checked the box on paper. Maybe I got too hyped by all the reviews and expected a lot, but everyone in my group corroborated what I felt. That being said, some of their chocolate pastries were better than the other ones. I remember one with hazelnuts which I particularly liked, but not much else read more

Small little bakery shop that has been in business for over 25 years. I went there for their well-known guava cake and would give it a 3 star (had higher expectations). The taste of guava was mild, and the layer was thinnly made, making it even harder to taste the guava. I like the cream cheese, which was soft and moist and not overly sweet. On the other hand, I LOVE the chocolate cake. The hazelnut and chocolate mousse were delicious - silky and smooth. You can taste the quality of chocolate used. They did not skim on this. Can't wait to give the others (mango and black curant vanilla) a try. read more

We live about 10 min away from Masse's, we've walked here 3 times for dessert during store hours but they were always closed for no reason, so we thought they must be going out of business. After brunch today we realized that masse's was actually open so we went in for dessert. There were two people in front of us so I stood in line and started browsing through Yelp for review. Then a woman's voice said "put your phone down, chances are we don't have what you're looking at". At first I thought she was confronting someone because how rude she was being, surely you can't talk to a customer who is just waiting in line in such manner! But sure enough she was addressing me! I was a little in shock but told her I was just looking at reviews. She then responded by saying "Stop looking at your screen. I'm here in person so you can just ask me!" At this point my husband who was standing behind me, was ready to walk out. But I was determined to at least try their stuff since we've tried eating here so many times without success. We ordered the pistachio chocolate cake and the pot de crème (about $17 before tip) and sat outside in case the older lady starts yelling at me again. I think she realized how rude she sounded and came out with 5 port infused cherries (a very nice gesture), but honestly the cake was very ordinary for the price, so this unhappy and unsatisfying visit marked our first, and also last patronage. read more

Masse has the best cakes in the East Bay, probably even the whole Bay Area. There is no question. I love that they are European style and not too sweet. I aim to buy all special occasion cakes from here. For my birthday, my brother bought me a chocolate hazelnut cake and I literally finished half the cake myself in 1 day. SO GOOD. I could at least somewhat taste the different flavors, which I know can be challenging with macarons, but if you just have a sweet tooth in general you will probably enjoy the macarons. read more

Maase bakry supplied me with themes amazing cake. It as wrapped in a film of chocolate, it had five layers, some of them were delicious mousse , others where chocolate cake. The top was beautifully decorated with chocolate flowers. Five stars! read more

We stopped by because I was craving the little raspberry chocolate cake my spouse got me last Mother's Day and I AM SO STOKED there were some in the case! There was a lovely person whom I'm assuming is the owner taking a phone order and my kiddo asked for the pink macaron (cranberry orange is the flavor). I think this is his first macaron! She was very kind and friendly and it immediately made me feel really comfortable. I never know how folks might react to a tiny person. Spouse got two coconut chocolate macarons and I'm about to dive into this decadent cake that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I don't typically like berries and chocolate together but this is DIFFERENT. It smells divine. It tastes divine. I'm eating it in bed rn so my photo isn't top tier but it's even better than I remember!!!! Chocolate cake foundation. Mousse like berry situation with gel on top and it's got this delightful chocolate ring around it it's DELICIOUSSS! Little guy really enjoyed his macaron after initially being perplexed by the texture . The shop got quite busy by the time we left. Also!! Come on! I rarely enjoy dessert but after many well traveled people with excellent taste insisted I order a cake for my next special occasion, I relented and chose the Mango Mirror. Each week they have a different batch of flavors, so there's always something new to explore. For years, Masse's has been our go-to spot for special occasions--birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even Lunar New Year celebrations. We easily purchase a dozen cakes from them annually, and they've become a part of our traditions. The cake designs are always stunning, and the cream is undeniably delicious--rich, smooth, and perfectly sweetened. However, the cake itself can be inconsistent. Sometimes it's light, fluffy, and absolutely delightful, while other times it turns out dense and dry, which can be a bit disappointing. One recurring issue we've noticed is that the cakes occasionally come out lopsided, likely due to uneven cutting or layering. But the most noticeable change over the years is the shift in the cake-to-cream ratio. What used to be two generous, full layers of cake has now been reduced to a single layer split in half, making the cake feel disproportionately heavy on cream (~60%) and light on actual cake (~40%). While the cream is tasty, this change has left us wishing for a better balance, as it feels like they've cut back on the cake itself. Despite these drawbacks, Masse's remains a favorite for its beautiful designs and flavorful cream. That said, a little more consistency in the cake texture and a return to the original cake-to-cream ratio would make a big difference. In the past, the cakes here were very good. They still are, but the owner is a big pain the rear end. I went in and ordered a mini-cake. It was raspberry. This was always a favorite. The girl was nice and sweet, smiling and very pleasant. No problems with her. BUT..... When i got home, the cake was UPSIDE DOWN in the box. It was SMOOSHED. AND it was a birthday cake for a friend! The surprise was RUINED. I called the shop and spoke to the owner. She refused to listen to me. She said "That employee doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She'd never do something like that to you! She absolutely wouldn't!" I said that may be true, but the cake was UPSIDE DOWN. Maybe it was an accident. She said "OH NO. She would never do that. It's impossible." It's always possible for people to make mistakes. You cannot say that she would never accidentally do that. People can have bad days. I forgive the girl for putting the cake upside down, i suppose, but the owner was just so horribly rude. She makes so much money she doesn't care about us as individuals. Morning buns. w/ coffee. Yum. I just got back from Paris and the pastries here are delectable--almost comparable to the tasty desserts I fell in love with in France. I agree...some of the items available are rather expensive...but pastries and cookies are well worth what they charge. I only give three stars, because while its fun to dine there and the baked delicacies are great...the two to three minutes of service that it takes to hand you your pastry and ring you up are of uneven quality. I have been going to Masses about once or twice a month for the past two years and most of the time the staff are cordial and pleasant. However, there are quite a few occasions at which I did observe "the woman" (read other reviews!) who wasn't really that approachable, pleasant, and on a couple of occasions downright rude to her customers. While this negative service has never been directed at me per se...it has definitely not gone unnoticed. Overall, a great place for coffee and pastry (particularly on a Sunday morning), but beware of the occasional chilly reception. read more

Yesterday they made me a two-tiered passion fruit wedding cake, wrapped in white chocolate, with perfectly placed roses ON ONE DAY'S NOTICE! The cake was for a very ill friend, who decided with her fiance to marry on the spur of the moment (for obvious reasons.) Even though I phoned in the middle of their hectic Saturday, they didn't hesitate to say yes to a difficult request. We have ordered from this place on several occassions, trying to overlook the lady's rude demeanor - which looks like has worsened in the last 5+ years. She simply cannot restrain her sarcasm and hide her condescending attitude. As persons of color, we do not appreciate the way she describes those baked goods to us. As if we won't and don't understand. Another friend shared how this owner woman retorted after she heard a person's political opinion which was different from her own. The older woman(assume the owner or wife of owner) is super rude, as you will see from any of the bad reviews. I personally gauge a place based on its service and products-- and this place is definitely lacking in service skills. There are plenty of good bakeries in Berkeley, which have better manners and don't treat their customers like garbage. Please consider getting this woman some therapy and taking her off the floor with customers. It's also concerning that a handful of the reviews say that they felt discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or race... Masse's Bakery, this is unacceptable! read more

I've been coming to the bakery for longer than I can remember, and before that it was my dad that went there habitually. The staff is so kind and welcoming and they will customize a pastry for any of you celebratory needs. The pastries are delicious and I love how they periodically change their menu and selections based on what fruits are in season.
