It was last minute and I needed a cake so I hadn't planned ahead. I called to ask what they had in their case. Brrrring-brrrring! There was a live voice, not a recording asking me 1) which location I wanted, 2) would I hold because they were helping other customers, and 3), to please leave a voice mail and they could call back later. No! The guy on the other end said they had 6-inch round cakes in their case - perfect size for our celebration. It took about 30 minutes to get there and I managed to park in front of their door (a miracle in itself!). I chose a mango mousse cake - it was gorgeous, and perfect for an impromptu birthday celebration. Note: the finished cake is more like 8+ inches in diameter. I think it is the base of the cake they measure from. Once you add on the whipped cream and lady fingers, you have a gorgeous and substantial cake. Thank you so much, our friend was very happy! read more

I do like their home baked style bread, both wheat and white loaves. However the regular guy who is running the counter is very curt. They don't list prices of the pastries and he is irritated answering any questions. If prices were listed I wouldn't impose on him. Bakeries are supposed to be warm and welcoming like a hearth. Now when I see him at the counter I skip the bakery that day. Hopefully the customer service improves because I would like to support this small business especially because they do have quality baked goods. read more

After sushi, I hopped inside this bakery for dessert. The only person working wasn't the most friendliest. I was also the only one in the store looking and deciding what I wanted. He seemed a bit standoffish I didn't know what I wanted. They had so many desserts, pastries, and even savory pastries to choose from. It all looked delicious. I opted for the small tarts so I can make a little sampler of my own. Tarts were good, but the crust was just okay. read more

DO NOT TRUST THIS BAKERY FOR ANY SPECIAL EVENT I placed an order on December 13 for a cake for my sister's birthday celebration on December 30, plenty of notice for what should have been a simple, professional transaction. When I arrived to pick up the cake, they had not made it at all. There was no real apology, no urgency, and no accountability. The staff was completely nonchalant about the fact that they had dropped the ball on an important milestone celebration that could have been completely ruined because of their mistake. The person who took the order, Jack, was apparently "new," but that is not an excuse. If he took the order, where was it put? Why was it never followed up on? And more importantly, why were no meaningful concessions made when we arrived and discovered their error? The only "solution" offered was an alternative cake that would serve six people, when we needed a cake for 25. That's not a solution; that's insulting. To make matters worse, we were able to find another bakery (Marita Pies - Sweet Potato Pie Co.) that stepped up and baked a cake for us in TWO HOURS the same day. That just highlights how poorly Hopkins Bakery handled this situation. This is horrible customer service, horrible business practice, and a complete lack of professionalism. Do not depend on this bakery for any special event. I would never recommend this place and will absolutely never return. Save yourself the stress, disappointment, and potential embarrassment; go somewhere else. read more

I have been driving in from Oakland to buy Bobo's for fifteen years. It is the only item that I buy here. Ordered a dozen today and opened the box when I got home. I do not mind that the price has increased substantially. I do have a problem with how tiny they have become. It is insulting. I will not be ordering them again. Business rule number one is do not screw your customers. read more

The apricot jam in the hamantaschen was so delicious, and the ratio of jam to cookie was perfectly abundant! Yum!

Pastries are tasteless and dry. No flavor, even though I was told it was baked the same day.

A pocket-sized bakery in the Hopkins/Monterey neighborhood. They have tasty coaster sized cookies, freshly filled cream donuts, muffins, croissants, and cinnamon morning buns (my personal favorite, better than Acme). There is also a display of tartlets. It's a great place for fresh to-go items if you are in the neighborhood. I would like to return some time when I need a baguette. read more

My family and I have been customers of Hopkins Street Bakery for many years. Unfortunately we had such a bad experience with their cupcakes for our daughter's birthday that we have to leave this feedback so other people can avoid the same mistake. Long story short, we ordered 20 cupcakes on Friday for a Sunday AM pickup because all the cupcake specific bakeries would not open early enough for our party Sunday AM and we wanted fresh treats. Great news is that Hopkins opens on Sundays at 7:30 in the morning and we have always loved their fresh birthday cakes with fresh fruit so we figured the cupcakes would be tasty also. Unfortunately, we were very wrong. When we placed the order Friday afternoon, the person taking our order was hesitant to commit, which should have been a solid warning sign. At first, he said he might not be able to do it but when I told him we only needed 20 and we were fine with half chocolate and half vanilla rather than any more complicated orders like red velvet or strawberry. He said it would probably work, but if, for some reason they weren't able to make the order they would call me on Saturday. I was grateful. Fast forward to Sunday, the pick up went fine, but these cupcakes were incredibly dry cake, and the frosting was so dense and gummy that the cupcakes were inedible. The frosting was so gummy that we could not get the birthday candle out of one without the ganache lump pulling off the top as well. You can tell a cupcake is not very good when none of the kids are able to eat their first let alone ask for a second. Not to mention, these cupcakes were not particularly cheap at four dollars each. Before posting this review, I relayed my feedback to the shop manager directly and and he instead of listening, he focused on debating with me about the quality of the cupcake, their 30 year-old unchanged recipe, and how his baker stayed over time to make my order. I told him that if the order was problematic, we had expected to receive a phone call Saturday with a cancellation but we never got a call so we assumed it wasn't a problem. He offered to "throw in a couple cookies" next time I buy something at the shop. Pretty disappointing. Frankly, we would have been better off with mass produced Whole Foods cupcakes. We always want to always support local businesses but after this experience, I do not intend to come back to Hopkins. Many other options out there that would have tasted better even one-day old compared to these. At least the cupcakes look nice. I'm including a photo of all of the untouched ones. Not pictured are the cupcakes that were thrown out at the party after a bite or two. read more

I've tried several cakes from Hopkin's Street Bakery over the years, with the most recently tried being their strawberry/fruits basket cake, red velvet, and mango mousse. Out of those 3, I'd say the mango mousse cake is the most worth it. Mango Mousse Cake (moist yellow cake, layered with tropical mango mousse and topped with a mango fruit miroir) - you can get a sizable 10" cake for a decent price (under $40, but sure if they've raised the price over the past year), and it looks absolutely amazing. It tastes really light, flavorful, without being overly sweet as most cakes in my opinion. It was a hit amongst family that doesn't really enjoy sweets in general. It's one of those cakes that I don't feel guilty of eating as it's very refreshing, has great texture, and such. Red Velvet Cake - the daughter chose red velvet for her recent birthday, and the cake came out beautiful. The taste of the cake didn't stand out compared to red velvet cakes I've had, but it did look really good. The chocolate covered strawberries on top weren't sweet though, but the cream cheese frosting was one of the better ones I've had. The layers of the frosting with the cake wen't really well together, and wasn't overly sweet. Fruits Basket Cake - I stumbled across this cake one day when the bakery I usually go to was closed, so I headed to Hopkins St Bakery to see what cakes they had available that day. They didn't have a plain cheesecake available (another birthday request from a fam member), and the birthday girl wasn't a fan of coconut, so I went with the fruits cake, which was described to me as a strawberry cake. The inside was moist yellow cake, fresh strawberries, and fluffy whipped cream. It was pretty good, and the cream was really light. Some enjoyed it (I really did), but others who were more into "traditional" frosting didn't enjoy the cream portion as much. Pretty good cake with fresh fruit. Chocolate Cake (devil's food cake, layered with French chocolate ganache) - if you want chocolate and more chocolate, then this one is for you! Once a while, the fam wants something chocolate, and this cake does it for them each time. Just a small slice, and it's satisfying. Thick, dense, chocolatey. Italian Creme (espresso drizzled yellow cake, Marsala wine custard, finished with a ladyfinger crust and a dusting of chocolate flakes) - a family member bought this cake believing she heard "italian cheesecake," and did not expect something that was slightly coffee-flavored. She and her kids weren't really a fan of it, but I loved it! It's really close to a tiramisu in terms of flavors and the ladyfingers, and it was just so good. I'd definitely get one of these myself one day. read more

Their fruit basket is so good and if you have any leftover for the next day? It's so much better. My office gets all their birthday cakes from there. I thought I get my brother in law a cake for his birthday. It was a hit! The service on the phone was quick and straight to the point. He answered my questions and it was ok to pay upon arrival for pick up. Parking in front is a hit or miss. But I've been lucky the times I've been there. read more

TLDR: great service, beautiful display, well-made cakes! Hey, take my review with a grain of salt, or maybe sugar. As a gluten-intolerant picky eater, I was just here for moral support as my partner chose the proper cake for her mother's birthday. While the baked goods are my forbidden fruit, or in this case, delicacy, I can say that the appetite of my eyes were satiated, looking at the beautiful pastries looking back at me through the display glass. Too tempting! Also, the service clerk was honest about his own favorites and recommendations based on the information we gave him. read more

I was visiting a friend in Berkeley and she mentioned a bakery she has been wanting to go to. We got up early one morning and headed to the bakery. I could smell it before I could see the bakery and it smelled amazing. We walked inside and it's very tiny. However, there are plenty of options to choose from including savory hand pies, to slices of cakes, scones, muffins and even loaves of bread. In the corner of the bakery, they have day old stuff and the items are by one, get one for free. My friend and I opted to get a day old pear muffin and a scone filled with raisins and blueberries. The muffin was huge! It was very moist and the pears were spaced evenly throughout the muffin instead of sinking to the bottom. The scone was very flavorful and soft. Overall, this is a great bakery and a hidden gem. I can't wait to go back and check out some of their other baked goods as everything looks so amazing!! read more

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this gem before. I've been coming here for over 30 years and still come back even though I don't live locally anymore. It's changed owners several times but the baked goods are still exactly the way I remember them. The mango mousse cake is the best, pro tip order ahead and get one of the larger sizes. The danishes, muffins, and cookies are all solid choices as well. Parking can be challenging but it's worth it. read more

I have always enjoyed the baked goods at Hopkins Street Bakery. Frank is a dear friend who always makes sure the customers are getting what they have ordered. I enjoy their coconut pineapple cake VERY MUCH. I also ordered two cakes for my friend's birthday, and I asked them to make it lowest sugar possible because of sugar sensitivity to the a couple of guests. They did an amazing job at low sugar and flavors to the cake. I gave 4 stars because i wish they had gluten free options for guests with gluten sensitivities. read more

This review is specifically for their mango mousse cake - my parents and I love it. My parents are picky about desserts but they love that Hopkins doesn't make it too sweet. The flavors aren't artificial-tasting, the icing is creamy, the lady fingers are always a great texture, and the cake is gorgeous! It was my mom's birthday recently so of course she requested the mango mousse. I called the morning of to ask them to set aside one for me, and they also helped write "Happy Birthday" at the top of the cake. They are always nice and helpful with their service. I've also never seen it too crowded inside (it's a pretty small interior). Overall, I would recommend trying out the mango mousse cake. I definitely need to try out all their other products too, haha. read more

DANGEROUSLY GOOD cakes! At this minute my friends and I are dissecting a beautiful Princess cake, ordered especially for a birthday celebration. Their mango mousse cake is *chef's kiss*. It's so light, you won't even feel bad if you eat a quarter of the cake by yourself. I ordered the 8 inch for my sister's birthday last year and it was devoured almost immediately (there's only five of us to eat it). For my mom's birthday I ordered the 9" and it's almost half gone in just one night. I called to place an order about five days in advance (I think they need at least 2-3 days for anything other than the 8 inch order), and pickup is really easy, I'm usually in/out within five minutes. Parking is terrible, but you can easily find free neighborhood parking within a 3-minute walk. read more

The cakes and cookies are ok delicious, but the only problem is the service. I went there to purchase a cake yesterday, I had an extremely bad experience. I went inside and no one was at the front, then a boy came out with a pissed face, I didn't even want to greet him, but my mom so wanted to buy the cake that was why I didn't leave. While I was showing him which cake we want, he was focusing on his phone and I had to "excuse me" for couple time to get his attention and service. When we pay, I was really pissed by his attitude, he hardly pointed at the machine to "show" us how to pay, and kept looking if we pay him tips. I was so surprised for such service in this small bakery. Tbh, I don't think I will go again because I don't think we are welcome. read more

Neat little bakery tucked away in a hidden away in a terrific little neighborhood commercial area. You walk in and it smells delicious! They have pretty limited bakery items but the ones they have are good. Specifically we had a chocolate cupcake, a large toll house chocolate chip cookie, and a couple fruit tarts. All were so good!! Maybe slightly pricey at $20 for these items. I see they also do nice looking cakes for birthdays and weddings. They look good but not in the market for those. read more

Don't pay any attention to these last few newb reviewers. Triggered over being disconnected during the busiest time of year? Getting the vapors over a random (benign) flaw in a hand made loaf of bread produced by a small independent bakery? Jeez, buckle up...life might throw a few more difficult challenges your way some day. And shame on you for giving a bad review to a small business for such lame reasons. You are what's wrong with Yelp. I've been a customer at this bakery for about a year. The folks that work here have always been super friendly and given great customer service. The baked goods here are great. Croissants are like pizza margaritas; if the baker can make a good one, it bodes well for the rest of the menu. The croissants here are pretty darn good. And the rest of the menu is as well. The pastry, muffins, cookies and cakes are all very very good. Is this a bakery that people line up for an hour to get a fancy pastry just featured on some "influencer's" feed? No, thank god. This is a real bakery, making real food that's really good. read more
