They are friendly and welcoming upon entry and allow you to try flavors! When I came in July 2026, they had unique flavors like saffron, lavender, earl grey, and hibiscus among many others! We went about an hour before closing and there were a few hiccups throughout the visit. There was a line out the door which got me excited because it usually means the place is good, and the reviews say the same. The only issue is there's no clear menu posted online, so we walked in completely blind. Their website shows a long list of flavors but not what they actually have that day, so it felt like a guessing game. The line moved really slow because there was only one employee handling everything. She was taking orders, giving samples, answering questions, and ringing people up all at once. She was super friendly and doing her best, but it felt like a lot for one person during a rush and the shop could definitely use more help. The space is really small and tight so it was hard to even see the flavors until we got close to the front. When we finally got up there, a lot of the tubs were already empty which was confusing since most ice cream shops restock. Some flavors I wanted weren't available anymore, and if they're out it would make more sense to just remove them from display. The dirty containers didn't make sense to display. I sampled the jasmine green tea and knew right away I wanted it. It was creamy with a smooth tea flavor that wasn't overpowering. I got a small with half jasmine green tea and half avocado. The avocado was surprisingly really good, super creamy and tasted like a fresh avocado smoothie. Both flavors weren't overly sweet which I liked. My husband wanted cookies and cream but it was sold out so he got chocolate chip instead, which was solid and creamy with good texture. Overall the ice cream itself was good, not the best I've had but definitely not bad. I like that the flavors lean more natural and not overly sweet. Unassumingly unique! I was most pleased to find a geranium flavor - I've never had geranium flavored anything before, let alone ice cream! This turned out to be fresh and lightly floral, a bit reminiscent of a rose ice cream but not so perfumey. I paired it with the blueberry mint which was just as lovely; I had concocted a summer garden scoop that just about transported me away from the freezing ice age the Bay is currently going through. I walked into Tara's Organic during a trip to Rockridge and ordered a kids size. I have to say, I love the idea of a kids size. It felt to me like the perfect size of ice cream that I'm usually looking for. I chose the coffee but found my scoop to have an icicle crunch I didn't care for. The flavor in the first bite was very strongly coffee, which then faded away to a sickly sweetness I didn't enjoy. It honestly wasn't much ice cream, but I threw away most of it. The service was prompt and helpful, but as with Organic produce, the ice cream at Tara's was more expensive than most gelatos I've had recently ($4 for the kids size). I cannot stop thinking about the ice cream sandwiches from Tara's! The classic flavors are so pure and light, but even their new/season options are amazing. The purple sweet potato flavor is perfect wedged in between two of their homemade chocolate chip cookies; this is the stuff dreams are made of. Horrible customer service. Great ice cream. I've been a customer for many years and came in 7/29/26 between 3:30 and 4pm and one person was working and there was no line. The one girl working was super rude to my family and the second we paid she went to the back of the store and put on her headphones so we couldn't even ask her name. We waited for at least 15 minutes but she didn't emerge, even when a customer came in and left because nobody was there to serve him and a phone call went unanswered. I rarely write negative reviews and I really am hoping this person wasn't judging my family based on our identity. I only made two ice cream orders for my kids and she asked me to order separately in the most bizarre and rude way... I ordered calmly and slowly so I seriously don't understand what the problem was or if she was having a bad day but the rude behavior continued. My partner and I came here for dessert and I was pleasantly surprised by our experience! We were able to try some samples and a single scoop of Geranium and Rooibos Tea. The Geranium was nice and floral, on the lighter but still sweet side. The Rooibos Tea had a nice warmth to it, it reminded me of Thai Tea with more spice. I asked the server what her favorites are and she said Orange Cashew and Rooibos, so I'm excited to try that next time. The place is small, but there is indoor and outdoor seating. One of my preferred local ice cream spots. The flavors change regularly, so you'll always get a chance to try something new. They do limit you to tasting 2 flavors max, though I think you can't go wrong with any flavors you choose. Payment is electronic preferred (no cash) and they recently posted new hours starting May 2024. I highly recommend trying their housemade, waffle cones too. My favorite is the black sesame waffle - it adds an additionally nice layer of flavor and has the right crunch and mouthfeel to pair with the creamy ice cream. Ice creams are made well with solid ingredients. They can also make an ice cream sandwich, sundae, or root beer or cold brew float. Add toppings to your ice cream for $1.55 each (they have a taste-enhancing balsamic glaze that I recommend you try with certain flavors). You can also buy a pint for $16 to take home and savor your favorite flavor longer or share with others. This weekend I combined 2 flavors in one scoop in a black sesame waffle cone: garden delight (made with fresh cream and colorful, edible flowers!) and sage. Finally got to check this shop out and so glad I did. The baby scoops are the perfect serving when you want just a little ice cream to satisfy your sweet tooth. I really like this small shop! It's very simple on the inside with few seatings inside and outside. Once you get the ice cream, you could walk down the street while eating! I got the black sesame and pandan ice cream and it was really good. I really like how strong the flavor was for both flavors I got and that it wasn't just a slight hint of pandan or black sesame. Sadly, l've had a child since my last review and she turns out to be nut allergic. I understand that cross contamination is a possibility but most shops we know have been happy to wash a scooper out or use a nut-allergy specific scooper. Tara's Organic Ice Cream has been on my bucket list for quite a while. That made the experience extra disappointing when none of the three flavors my date and I got was a hit. To our surprise, Tara's does not offer samples due to COVID, which at this point feels like a super lame excuse. Don't get me wrong; keeping people safe is very important -- I just don't think there is a correlation. Customers aren't even going in the shop, so it seems more likely that Tara's just doesn't want to spend money on additional plastic spoons (or use metal ones that they would then have to wash). With limited information about the available flavors, we chose the Burnt Caramel, Black Sesame, and Geranium. The Black Sesame was the best, and it was only okay. My date described the Geranium as tasting like perfume -- not citrusy as the employee who served us described. She was friendly, and if it were up to her, I imagine she'd prefer offering samples so that customers did not have to rely on her taste buds and recommendations. Another drawback of Tara's is that besides one bench outside, there's no seating, so if there's already someone on the bench, you can't sit down to enjoy your ice cream immediately. Finally, the ice cream is fairly expensive for what it is, perhaps due -- at least in part -- to the cost of organic ingredients. Overall, I would call our visit a waste of money and calories. I'd much sooner go back to iScream or Mr. Dewie's Cashew Creamery. read more

Wow! We fancied some ice cream, so my friend suggested Tara's! I was with a small group of friends, so I just went with the flow. What a great suggestion! My friend mentioned they have unique flavors and that was just what I wanted to hear! I love unique flavors! I ordered a small with two flavors: Sage and Rosemary. The sage was unbelievably good! This is the second time I've had Sage ice cream (the other time being in NYC) and it's just so ridiculously good! The Rosemary was also delightful! The flavors here were extraordinary range from Garam Masala to Geranium. The flavors rotate, but on our visit, there were at least 20 flavors and after checking Tara's website, there's oh so many more. There's a take-out window only at the moment, but no samples currently. I'd say the only sour note is that it's really pricey, especially for the portion size. I'm super stoked to try it and I'd probably return if in the area to try more unique flavors, but this is definitely a treat! read more

The dark chocolate sorbet was nice in combination with the peppercorn ice cream and it had a nice rich darkness to it, but it was icy rather than creamy, so I wouldn't get it on its own. The flavors offered are unique which makes it difficult to decide in the covid times of non sampling flavors! My daughter didn't like her peach ice cream, which the shop person had recommended to her. She asked the shop if they could switch it out for her because she didn't like it, but they declined which was a bit disappointing. My nephew enjoyed his cardamom and geranium scoops. I LOVE Tara's! When Ici's left, I was bummed but was so happy that Tara's is still around with her fresh, creamy, unique-flavored, delicious and of course organic ice cream. I remember first enjoying Tara's a while ago and enjoying the heat from the pink peppercorn, the comforting cardamom and soothing honey lavender- it was such a welcomed break from the usual traditional flavors and I instantly fell in love. Plus- they have tasty waffle cones- the black sesame is my favorite! You'll see a menu at their storefront with several interesting flavors- be brave and try something different- I guarantee you will appreciate the flavor. Recently I had gotten reacquainted with Taras' and had tried the basil, lucuma (tropical fruit), garam masala, and one of my all time faves- black sesame! Sizes come in small, medium, large. I usually get the medium so I can try more flavors (up to 3). The total with a waffle cone totals to around $8.60 which is a bit pricey. However, I know Tara and her team make their organic ice cream sustainably with quality ingredients, which unfortunately adds to the higher prices. Whenever I'm in the Berkeley area, I make sure to get my Tara's fix. They stacked the flavors on top of each other, so it would probably be best to get ones that complement each other. I've never had Rooibos tea before, but it was like a red tea flavor. It was pretty strong, which I enjoyed. The black sesame was some of the best we've ever had as an ice cream flavor. They did a really great job bringing out a toasted black sesame taste. I wish the ice cream was a bit creamier and the sizes were a bit bigger, but I'm impressed by how well they nailed the flavors. Plus, it's nice that all the ice cream is organic! read more
