Yum yum yummm!!! Amazing texture and wonderful white chocolate flavor. Honestly the fruit swirl in here blew me away!!!

Mango Sorbet and Pistachio Gelato
Deanna T.

Arrived back in Berkeley for one night and got to try a different dessert this time! This place is centrally located in the plaza right off the Downtown Berkeley BART station. My good friend not only picked us up, but she and her husband got dinner too, so of course I had to get dessert! We were short on time, so I used DoorDash to place a pickup order and it was literally ready in like less than two minutes. I can't speak on the ambiance of the place as my partner was the one who ran out to go get our order. Mango Sorbet - one taste of this and I swear it was reminiscent of biting into an Alphonso mango (which I know is no longer in season). This is a total winner and for this flavor alone, I would absolutely come back. Pistachio Gelato - this was pretty creamy and the crushed pistachio pieces actually tasted like it had been fresh and roasted. I'm glad it retained it's flavor and texture despite being swirled into a gelato. My partner commented that it was good seeing a pistachio frozen dessert in its natural color and not with the artificial green food coloring. This turned out to be a perfect purchase because my friend who lives in Berkeley surprisingly had not tried this place yet! I knocked off a star because the pints did not have the flavors labeled which I thought was rather strange. We were all impressed by both gelato flavors, but the mango sorbet was very clearly the fan favorite. It's nice to know this shop is opened daily (Monday to Thursday from 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM and Friday to Sunday from 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM) especially with school back in session.

Small cup of apple pie and mocha crunch sitting

We walked here after dinner for dessert. The place is warm and cozy inside with soft music playing. They offer hot beverages but we came for gelato. The server was friendly and efficient. I enjoyed my small serving of apple pie and mocha crunch sitting outside taking in the Berkeley evening scene.

Pistachio and chocolate gelato

4.6/5: Pistachio gelato: A little too sweet. Flavor is a touch artificial. Tastes like it has 20% almond extract to keep costs down. It contains fine ground pistachios as a mix-in, which I dislike. 2.0/5: Chocolate gelato Tastes like stale cardboard. It has no depth or complexity. The gelato is piled high in the case, and likely loaded with stabilizers; it's very thick and stretchy.

Half lemon sorbet half cookies and cream gelato

Never knew I liked lemon sorbet so much until I tried Almare's! My boyfriend and I stopped by close to closing on a weekend, and the staff was kind enough to serve us the last of the lemon sorbet, even though it wasn't quite enough to fill a cup. If you love tart and refreshing, this one's for you. I paired it with cookies and cream, which is a more classic flavor, but surprisingly the combo worked well together. Overall, the gelato leans a bit sweet for my taste, but the unique and less common flavors make up for it. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a little sweet treat.

Pistachio (front) and stracciatella (back)

I've been walking past Almare for years upon emerging from the Downtown BART station. After dinner in Downtown Berkeley one evening, my friend insisted we stop for gelato and said that Almare was her favorite shop. The shop is tiny but has plenty of outdoor seating - right outside the BART station exit. When ordering, each person is allowed one sample. I decided to order a scoop of the pistachio, which was rich and loaded with pistachio (the way it ought to be). The mini size was just right for me, but the small scoop (next size up) lets you combine flavors. There were plenty of appealing flavors - from stracciatella to fig almond - and friendly, efficient servers. I'll have to stop by more often before my commute!

Came super late but this was so good! I never had banana gelato but this place hooked me on it, and that chocolate chip gelato is so good. Come here, you won't regret it

kids ube and toasted almond and caramelized figs
Ester L.

Super pleasantly surprised by Almare. Was served by one taller woman who was very sweet and a shorter guy who was very indifferent, but let me try two samples because I was being indecisive. Wish I could take pints of this because the flavors were so unique and delicious. I tried the peach yogurt and almond fig, both were very good but the almond fig was more my taste. It is sweet in such a good nutty way. I ended up getting that and the ube, and am glad I got that pairing. I highly recommend and will be coming back.

Small Banana Caramel

Great spot to get something sweet after stuffing my face at dinner! Almare is a cute little store with a couple of tables. The location is right by the Berkeley Bart station. On a Sunday night around 7:30 p.m., the place was pretty empty. To our disappointment, the freezer with its display of the flavors was pretty empty as well. We went ahead and sampled a flavor or two and settled with what was available. I chose a banana caramel gelato. This was delicious and creamy. Others in my party got matcha, dark chocolate and lemon. The matcha and chocolate flavors were amazing and rich. The lemon was good but got a little too tart after eating half of it. Will definitely return next time we're in the area. Hopefully they'll have more flavors to choose from.

Banana Caramel & Apple Pie

Omg. The gelato here is absolutely delicious, but I especially love the interior, which is very cozy and warm, especially at night. Almare takes you to a different world from Downtown Berkeley & is perfect for a quick dessert. I really appreciate the variety of flavors here & I want to keep coming back to try all of them! Banana Caramel (5/5): Soooo good with a perfect balance of Banana and caramel without being too sweet. Highly recommend!! Pistachio (4/5): Solid pistachio ice cream with crunchy bits of pistachio folded in. I really liked the subtlety of the flavor and the unique texture. Apple Pie (5/5): Not sure if this flavor is only seasonal for the fall time but it was soo good with hints of apple and spices. Toasted Almond & Fig (4/5): Honestly just kind of tasted like vanilla ice cream but it had a slight nutty flavor from the almonds which was really good Caramel (3/5): My boyfriend and I both thought the caramel flavor was too strong & a bit too sweet, overpowered the other flavors.

Fresh scrumptious gelato
Roy A.

Outstanding fresh gelato with multiple flavors to choose from. Some unique scoops including a fig blend which was quite scrumptious! Medium gets you two flavors to mix. Better pick your best guess as you only get one sample to try. Coffee and Italian jams available too with biscotti :). Small cozy place with seating inside and out. Efficient service.

White Chocolate and Berries, Toasted Almond and Caramelized Figs
Ashley S.

This gelato spot has a unique selection of flavors to choose from and allows you to sample flavors as well. I went with the white chocolate & berries and toasted almond with caramelized fig flavor, and they were pretty good. you are able to do split flavors, and my only flaw is that they are very sweet. Also, since this spot is in downtown Berkeley, there is only street parking around the area but none immediately in front of the spot.

Coffee & Italian Chocolate Chip
Sherri W.

Authentic Gelato made the old fashioned way, where quality is evident with each scoop of gelato. While visiting via Bart, it definitely is a spot to visit. You have a good selection to choose from, but know that only 1 sample is allowed. With a small cup you can have 2 flavors, I chose Espresso & Mint Chocolate Chip Espresso Gelato is like a sip of coffee with a creamy component. Like a black & white I added a vanilla mint chocolate chip to balance it out. It was deliciously divine! When in Berkeley or Pleasanton, Almare is a place to stop for a treat!

Gadani was highly rated, nuff said. It's got a nice interior, but most shops these days do. First thoughts are they are running a Fanloli in there, lots of cutesy stuff for sale, not common for coffeeshops, but I was excited for a banana mocha latte or honestly whatever that has banana in it, I'm all for that but it was sold out, big bummer. Second thoughts are I hate the kiosk ordering, I had to dig around for that disappointing news, tbh I feel like this kiosk nonsense just means whoever is back there gets more time doom scrolling but call me out for not loving the end of human interactions. Third thought was this is taking awhile, took about 10 minutes to get a milk tea which is a little crazy when no one else is there. Case in point for second thought because anywhere else it would half the time, are they making bead necklaces into the back? Fourth thought was when my wife said her milk tea tasted like water, which I tried and said yep it does, then she asked me if mine was bad, because I had the same order only hot, which I said, "yes it does taste like water, how did you know," to which we both say collectively, "fucking Berkeley." Normally id leave it there, but then I realized that the cup was spilling on me constantly and it actually wasn't me, the top wouldnt close so I was spilling the milk tea flavored water all over my sweater because their cups don't close properly. Listen, it wasn't a nice sweater but comon, insult to injury in a time of failure, people come to places like this to get a night cap, especially in a world where nobody young drinks. How the hell is this top of the mark, is it the ice cream? If it's the ice cream, I'm glad, because otherwise I think y'all are crazy. All that and parking was $20 bucks. Smh, why do people live like this.

The only issue is there's no clear menu posted online, so we walked in completely blind. Their website shows a long list of flavors but not what they actually have that day, so it felt like a guessing game. The line moved really slow because there was only one employee handling everything. She was taking orders, giving samples, answering questions, and ringing people up all at once. She was super friendly and doing her best, but it felt like a lot for one person during a rush and the shop could definitely use more help. The space is really small and tight so it was hard to even see the flavors until we got close to the front. When we finally got up there, a lot of the tubs were already empty which was confusing since most ice cream shops restock. Some flavors I wanted weren't available anymore, and if they're out it would make more sense to just remove them from display. The dirty containers didn't make sense to display. I sampled the jasmine green tea and knew right away I wanted it. It was creamy with a smooth tea flavor that wasn't overpowering. I got a small with half jasmine green tea and half avocado. The avocado was surprisingly really good, super creamy and tasted like a fresh avocado smoothie. Both flavors weren't overly sweet which I liked. My husband wanted cookies and cream but it was sold out so he got chocolate chip instead, which was solid and creamy with good texture. Overall the ice cream itself was good, not the best I've had but definitely not bad. I like that the flavors lean more natural and not overly sweet. I could see myself coming back if I'm in the area, but the experience would be a lot better with faster service and more consistency with what's actually available.
