The ice cream looked interesting (hence two stars), but we did not taste it because the two young women who were that side of the counter on that Sunday afternoon, September 1st, were so engrossed in their own conversation that they weren't serving the people ahead of us in line. Ice cream in Berkeley, California... I had won a free ice cream cone on Instagram, so I drove from LA to Berkeley to get it! It was worth it! Tara's Organic Ice Cream seemed out of the way, but I made a road trip out of it and connected with my friends in Northern California. Parking was free, but a couple of blocks away in a residential area. I had contacted the owner with my arrival time and day - Saturday, July 27 around 1pm was the goal. I got there on time and showed my Instagram messages to the worker. She cheerfully helped me select two flavors for my cone. I tasted a few samples and finally decided on Spiced apple and Mexican chocolate on a SESAME cone - wow! Mmm! Delicious! Note: there's no restroom available. I was intrigued by them being a organic ice cream and didn't have any major expectations but I was blown away with the flavors. Cardamom: definitely tasted like cardamom but too subtle, not a lot going on Strawberry: I remember thinking "This is delicious but I won't remember it in 5 minutes" Coconut: my favorite; most interesting without being too sweet Look, it's good quality ingredients and it's not bad ice cream. I'd happily eat a gallon of the coconut ice cream, except it would set me back $175. At their prices they really are claiming "We are the best ice cream you've ever had." My friend recommended and took me here a couple times. We got lucky and found street parking just across the street. Right now, it's just a window that you order and pay from. Their menu has some interesting flavors. Unfortunately no samples available right now. I have tried the jasmine green tea and the strawberry both in a baby cup size. We had just come from lunch so I was stuffed. It was the perfect amount - just one scoop. The tea flavor was great. And it's hard to mess up strawberry. I would totally get both these flavors again. My friends got a small, which is two scoops. And you can get one or two flavors. One also got the black sesame cone, which I tried a bite of and it was really good too. I tried a little bit of the black sesame, mocha, cilantro, white pepper chocolate chip, and pistachio saffron. The cilantro was interesting - I thought it had good cilantro flavor. Like if you didn't tell me what it was, I would guess cilantro. The white pepper chocolate chip was spicy and I wasn't a fan. I also did not have high opinions of the pistachio sesame. The ice cream is good quality, but not astonishing. Mayan chocolate and blueberry were the probably the flavors that were somewhat worth the money and time. The other flavors aren't. I really want others to be aware of this shop's portions. Probably the smallest I've ever seen for our purchase, making it hardly an enjoyable experience. We bought a large for ~$10.50, which looked like the size of a small for normal ice cream parlors, to split between three people. The pictures here are incredibly misleading. Each of us got ice cream that could barely fit in a cold medicine cup. Think about it. Safeway sells a tub of ice cream for $4.50. CREAM gave double Tara's "large" portions for $4.50. Regardless of quality, it's a crime to call that bowl of ice cream a large and charge $10.50 for it. I have no interest in coming here again and would not recommend it even to those with a larger budget--you could probably find something just as good for cheaper. INITIAL CONCERN: I went to buy ice cream and got to the register only to learn they won't take cash. Maybe that was defensible during the pandemic, but businesses need to recognize that there are people in our community who do not have credit cards and bank accounts, notably our homeless brothers and sisters. It's just not acceptable to deny service to those in our community who only have cash, that real and tangible currency that never bounces and which can't be used fraudulently. Shame on Tara's. Until they change their policy I stand with our poor and our homeless and will not be back. I was going to take her back to Uji, but she asked to try a different spot so I remembered having this place bookmarked and headed out this way. We showed up around 4:45 PM on Monday, October 8th, and the place was empty. I asked to try three different flavors: lavender, berbère, and geranium. I went with a medium waffle cone with sesame seeds with a scoop of the lavender and a scoop of the geranium. Both were good, but seemed really sweet. They smelled really nice though. My biggest complaint was that the ice cream was already melting before I got to eat them. My niece got a small waffle cone with sesame seeds and a scoop of matcha green tea. She seemed to enjoy it. She's actually a big ice cream eater so the fact that she only asked for one scoop must mean that she wasn't too fond of it though. Since I'm obsessed with banana-flavored anything, the Banoffee Pie caught my eye. The Banoffee Pie is made up of bananas, cream, toffee/dulce de leche, and pastry base or crumbled biscuits. After sampling that flavor along with others, my decision was clear. Since we just had dinner and wanted a small dessert, I got the Baby Cone (~$4) which includes a mini cone and a mini scoop - just enough to satisfy that sweet tooth! The Banoffee Pie was super creamy and their waffle cones were super fresh. You can choose between a Regular and Sesame Cone; I chose the Sesame Cone. This ice cream put my tastebuds in heaven! Whether you're on the east or west side of the San Francisco Bay, there are some local spots where you can find delicious Salted Caramel or Burnt Caramel ice cream. It is for this reason that I have been desperately trying to get my hands on Tara's Organic Ice Cream's version of these two flavors. Whenever I'm in Berkeley, I religiously check Tara's website to see if those two elusive concoctions are available for the day. Since the list is not updated real-time, I have become accustomed to hearing the line, "Sorry, we ran out of it," when I pay them a visit. With each failure came a new flavor being discovered and, as a result, I am convinced that I do not have to try their caramel before giving them my five-star approval. Among my new favorites are listed below: Orange Cashew and Orange Cardamom - As a citrus person, any flavor with orange, lime, lemon, and the like are winners. I like their Orange Cashew, which has that salty and nutty additive from an obvious ingredient. Their Orange Cardamom, I like it even more. That almost gingery taste is guaranteed to remain for a couple of hours. Strawberry Balsamic - The balsamic glaze on the strawberry ice cream is simply wonderful. It provides great contrast that makes a classic flavor even more enjoyable. Black Sesame - They kept this one simple with only the toasty punch of roasted black sesame seeds but they made it quite rich. Move over, Maeda-En! My all time favorite ice cream shop in the world!! I love coming here for amazing flavors and amazing service. They rotate flavors pretty frequently, but whatever you get you won't regret. Their flavors are super creamy, super strong and you can tell they use good ingredients. In addition to the traditional vanilla or chocolate, they serve unique flavors that are to die for! My favorite flavors are cardamom and geranium. Cardamom has a nice spice to it and it goes so well with their cone or just in a cup. You can tell they use the actual spice because you're able to taste bits in the ice cream. The Geranium has a nice floral sweetness to it and it never gets too perfume-y. I've tried so many other flavors, but it would take a long time to talk about, so I'll just list a couple of really delicious flavors: Sweet Corn, Spiced Pumpkin, YlangYlang, Earl Grey, Rose, Strawberry, Jasmine Green Tea, Sweet Cream, White Pepper Chocolate Chip, and many more. But seriously, all the flavors are good, so go crazy and sample as many as you want! Not only is the ice cream high quality, but the cone is absolutely delicious. It's got a nice snap and crunch, it isn't super dry and tastes really buttery and good! After I got the cone, I knew I would never be able to get back to a plain old cup. The service here is also great. They're always very patient, especially when you want to sample every flavor here. While I tend to frequent the location on Telegraph Avenue in Temescal, sometimes I have a hankering for ice cream when I'm walking on College Ave. This Tara's is a much bigger shop than the one in North Oakland, and it also has a bigger selection of flavors. Otherwise, both stores offer a selection of uniquely flavored ice creams, and their homemade cones are a highlight. During my most recent visit, I tried their bay laurel caramel and orange cashew, and the ice cream flavors were fresh and not overly sweet. The texture was smooth and creamy, which I've come to expect from Tara's. There's not a lot of seating options, but compared to the Telegraph branch, it's a freaking stadium.
