Love Tara's! The ice cream is 5* and offers unique flavors. If you like Black Sesame, coconut, or green teas...Tara's is great with expansive flavor profiles. I stock up on my favorites and really love strawberry as well. This is the Bay Area so if you're gonna complain about price points just eat at home. Every ice cream joint is pricy. So what?! You're paying for the privilege to eat out and that won't come cheap in one of the priciest areas of the world. To fault the small business (which doesn't have it easy) is crazy to me. Tara's Organic had some really unique flavors and was the perfect desert after dinner in the Rockridge area. I had a scoop of germanium ice cream in a sesame cone, and it was delightful! There were 3 customers behind us in line who left because of how long it took for us to get our ice cream. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and understanding? I don't get the consistent theme across the reviews for Tara's Organic Ice Cream: weird flavors. Seriously, what's so weird about Garam Masala ice cream? ;) I'm the crazy uncle. Every couple of months, when visiting friends with kids I show up with a cooler of 6-8 pints of ice cream flavors, instead of bringing a bottle or two of wine. It's fun watching the kids' faces. Sitting at the table, trying hard not to show any enthusiasm, when I can see plainly that they are just about giddy with excitement and anticipation. I used to prepare their parents that the flavors weren't the usual chocolate or butter pecan, but by now they are used to the crazy flavors I bring and try to understand why the wonderful pumpkin pie ice cream is made even better by goat cheese. "I don't know about Garam Masala, though", my friend told me. "Fine. Fine. I'll bring Basil or saffron instead of that". "Saffron?" She asks with raised eyebrows. "What?! they've not had kulfi before? What kind of sheltered kids are you raising?" I exclaim with mock indignation. That often settles any doubts the parents might have :) Strawberry Rose. Gingerbread. Pink Peppercorn. Black sesame. Carrot cake. Ginger caramel. Blueberry mint. Molasses. Lemon Verbena. Those are just some of the flavors I've flown in from Tara's since 2010. I've a lot of respect for their business model around sustainability and organic ingredients as they were ahead of the curve in terms of ice cream shops that did that then. So, it was fun to see the shop in person this past Friday and sample Cardamom, Apple Pie, and Jasmine Green Tea flavors. I think Tara's compares favorably to Ici in terms of creativity of flavors, breadth of selection on display, and the consistency they bring to individual execution (a lot more flavors miss the mark at Ici). But, I still find some of the flavors to be mute than intense. Tara's is definitely my favorite ice cream shop in Berkeley, and I hope they'll continue to feature exotic flavors that both expand customer palettes and their understanding of the world. read more

The kinds of flavors they offer are so unique and makes the experience all the more fun. It's hard to choose one or two scoops since they're all so interesting, but at least they let you sample before you choose. You wouldn't think these flavors work but they do. I really liked the bay leaf (laurel) flavored one, such a unique taste you wouldn't really think of to find in a scoop of ice cream. The berbere (Ethiopian spice) was super flavorful but it reminded me too much of the savory, regular Ethiopian food, and it's a little spicy. Garam masala tastes a bit like eating a Chai latte in ice cream form! Overall awesome experience. read more

This place is good. The place is small and they have unique flavors. One of the flavors that was interesting was cilantro; however, I wasn't able to try it. I like how they play funky electro alternative type music in there. I tried two flavors (mexican chocolate and coconut) and both were good. At first, I didn't know which to get but ended up getting the coconut. There are little specs of coconut in there so that's pretty cool. I had a one scoop baby size in a cup and that was definitely a small portion but I think perfect if you're pretty full. They have a lot of herby type flavors and from what I remember when I went there in the past, they were good. Stopped in here for a sweet treat with my friends. Since it was more of a chilly Bay Area day, the place wasn't too crowded, which is always a plus! Let me start off by saying, WOW so many unique flavors!! Many seemed to have been inspired by a variety of Asian flavors and spices. TBH half of the stuff I not only could not pronounce, but also had no clue what it was. That was no problem though because lucky for us, the staff graciously let us sample as many flavors as we wanted. So nice and patient! I was in a fruity mood so I got the fruit smoothie sorbet, which was perfectly refreshing and fresh in flavor. It had a nice berry mix, and definitely did not taste artificial. :) It was also reasonably priced at about $3.80 for a small scoop. The ice cream was of good quality but the service was not good at all. The girl serving us was not friendly and helpful. She just stood there and stared at us with a blank look and then turned around and did other things when we were not finished with our choices. We ended up getting a small scoop and it was quite small alright for being almost $5 for a small cup. Tried it for the first time in Marin; bought it in the grocery store - Good Earth Natural Foods in Mill Valley. $10.98 for 12 oz... most expensive per ounce in the store. It's like a local organic three twins. The appeal is that they are local with unique flavors, but the truth is that they have a better reputtion than their product deserves. It's OK. I like to go by and grab a scoop when I'm at Burma Superstar, however, two - three bites in, I wonder why I bothered. The ice cream is OK. Just OK, which isn't a reason to stop in. CREEEEEAMMMINESS FOR DAYS. Went here on National Ice Cream day (this past Sunday, 7/16)!!!! I was kind of surprised they didn't have any kind of special or anything, but I HAAAD to get my fill. To be honest, it was about 85+ degrees outside, so no surprise that the line was out the door even though it was 5:30. My friend has been raving about this place stating that Tara's has the best Taro Ice Cream! Unfortunately when I came last weekend, they didn't have the Taro. I'll definitely need to visit again! I ordered the Burnt Caramel Ice Cream here and it was amazing. I actually might like it better than the Salted Caramel Ice Cream at Bi-Rite in SF, and that's a huge statement! The Salted Caramel was heavenly and not overwhelmingly salty. I finished it quickly and regretted not getting two scoops instead. The sugar cone here is quite delicious as well! The area is so residential that I thought I had the wrong address. The shop has a cozy and very personal feel--much more personal than Bi-Rite Creamery or Humphry Slocombe. They have a wide selection of flavors and many of them sounded good. I immediately went for the molasses and it tasted exactly like molasses. I thought I would like it, but maybe molasses ice cream is not the flavor for me. I went with a scoop of the caramelized pear. The flavor was very mild (pear desserts tend to be), but it was still nicely sweet and tasty. The consistency was great. It was firm, dense and creamy (without any iciness). I also had the cajeta, which had a sweet dulce de leche flavor. Unfortunately, this flavor was incredibly soft and runny (the server mentioned that the cajeta was quite soft today). Service was good and friendly. My caramelized pear flavor at Tara's was good and I would like to come back and try some of their other flavors. The ice cream had an addictive quality that made me want to opt for another scoop immediately after I finished (though that might have also been due to their smaller sizes here). Delightfully creative ice cream and sorbet is sold here. In fact, it was so good, we came twice. In an hour. Okay, okay. I wasn't quite that much of a pig that I consumed two portions of ice cream, but we did pick up a friend who we thought we should introduce to the delights of Tara's creations. A small nets you up to two flavors, for which I selected rosemary pear and black sesame. The overarching theme of the frozen dairy here is rich creamy flavors that don't kick you in the face. They're just solidly present. The BFF had ginger maple and white pepper chocolate chip. Yep. That's right. White pepper. At first, you take a bite and it's just cold creaminess. Then the pepper hits you and you're like, "whoa!" Cute little shop. Adorable employee behind the counter (we didn't get to meet Tara herself) who was spunky, energetic, and knowledgeable about all of the products. And reportedly, all of the magic is made in house here. Bonus: compostable plasticware. What's not to love? read more

Why does everything cool show up in your neighborhood AFTER you move? My favorite place I've ever lived was my apartment at Alcatraz and College. Now that intersection has an Indian place instead of Buttercup Pizza, Extreme Pizza instead of High Tech Burrito, and Wood Tavern. Why couldn't those have been there ten years ago? We lived there until 2004, and back then the northeast corner was just a liquor store and a newsstand, both of which we never went to. Now that newsstand has been replaced by Tara's. And let me tell you, if Tara's had been there back when we lived there we would have never left. (Okay, maybe we would have still left to be closer to our jobs but before leaving we would have eaten at Tara's every day.) We heard all the buzz about Ici so last weekend on our day trip to Berkeley (which basically involved eating, eating, and eating), we stood in line for 10 minutes at Ici only to notice in horror that the line. Hadn't moved. At all. We decided to check out Tara's instead. (And also go inside the gate of our old fourplex and wander the grounds. Is that too stalker-y?) Tara's had no line and there was no pressure to stop getting samples. We tried but did not get: Nutmeg (good but too close to Orange Cardamom which we did get) Turkish Coffee (one of the more popular flavors) Sweet Corn (interesting) Lemongrass (not a fan of in ice cream) I wish I'd tried: Fig and Port (another of the most popular flavors), Epazote (as in the Mexican herb) Rosemary Pear Of note, there were no flavors involving chocolate that day (though there are chocolate flavors on their online menu showing all flavors they ever have). We went with the Orange Cardamom (or as my husband calls it "the O-Card") and the Blackberry. (I like that they give you two scoops of different flavors for a small size.) The Blackberry was really good and a nice contrast to the Orange Cardamom, but the big winner was the O-Card. My husband declared the it to be the best ice cream he's ever had. I'm already a fan of Cardamom ice cream but the orange flavor added an extra shade of deliciousness. Unlike Ici, the bench outside was totally empty and we enjoyed our ice cream booty. Tara's is right down the street from the immensely popular Ici but I actually liked Tara's better! Tara's definitely embodies the free spirited, organic culture with unique flavors such as Garam Masala and Chinese 5 Spice. I really liked the sweet corn but the white pepper chocolate chip was way too pepper-y for me. The Sesame was a particular favorite for Camellia C's parents and I think that flavor really caters to Asian palettes. Everyone here is truly kind and they're happy to have you try all their interesting flavors. Normally I'm skeptical when it comes to organic ice cream as I (wrongly) equated organic to mean not tasting as good as traditional high butterfat ice creams. But what pleasantly surprised me about Tara's Organic Ice Cream is that the flavors are extremely creamy while still maintaining a bursts of flavor that will really expand your palette. The organic ingredients really came through in each bite. While Humphry Slocombe was my go-to ice cream shop in SF for wacky artisan flavors, I have to put Tara's up there and perhaps even surpassing it because of the really well-executed and delectably creamy scoops. With all this organic ice cream I'm consuming you would think I'm turning into a health freak! Quick, where's the Tofutti? I can't remember everything I sampled, but these are the flavors I got a scoop of. They each had a little something I couldn't get enough of! Orange Cashew - having just eaten sushi this was a great way to clear my palate! The orange is a bit mellow and the cashews are so fine you just get a hint of the nuttiness in the background. This one is my fave so far! Peach - made with white peaches, one of my favorite fruits. A very clean and crisp flavor, dare I say even better than Mitchell's seasonal peach flavor?? Yikes! Let's just say Mitchell's is regular peaches and Tara's is a whole different peach! ;) Strawberry Balsamic - a little tart... very, berry sweet... a little tangy... I don't like it... then I do. I love that it does that to me! =) Sweet Cream - normally, I don't like sweet cream ice cream, but Tara's version is just refreshing! Where creaminess is a huge factor in ice cream, Tara's is more soft but still smooth. They manage to make the pure flavors pop which more than makes up for it. Tara's is definitely a must-try for the adventurous. It's a tiny store with very new age, Asian-inspired decor, and some "crazy" ice cream. Tara uses lots of exotic spices in her ice cream, and apparently lower fat milk, so the end result is healthier than at most ice cream places. The flavors switch a bit each day. From what I've sampled so far (And I've sampled A LOT), I would especially recommend the Chocolate Sorbet (which tastes like a Truffle in Sorbet form!) and the Saffron ice cream. The mint is obviously flavored using real mint leaves--give it a try. Service was very friendly both times we came (Tara served us the second time)--when I was unable to choose between 2 flavors, Tara said she could scoop half and half for me! I love that, as indecision is my vice. I actually prefer Ici's more conventional ice cream. At Tara's I tried a lot of flavors, and only a few really blew me away, but it was definitely a fun experience and one I would certainly not mind repeating. My experience was really short because my friends and I came right before the store closed. I loved all the flavors they had to offer and ended up going with a cone ice cream (had bits of cone in it). It wasn't crunchy cone but it wasn't soggy either haha. After eating at Genova's Delicatessen for lunch, Kari S. and I ventured to one of my bookmarked places. This place really takes the cake or ice cream for their variety and combination of flavors. I can't even remember the flavors that they had when we went but I can tell you what we did order - lemon blueberry, peach agave sorbet, and ginger caramel all for $4.60. All were delish but I really took a liking to the ginger caramel which was actually Kari S.'s pick. The guy who helped us was super nice and even offered us a huge glass of water to wash the sweet taste of ice cream away. FYI...There's an interesting article in their front window referring to genetically modified fish blood. I thought it was referring to Tara's ice cream but the owner, Tara O., corrected me. My apologies. Tara's uses no fish products whatsoever! However, Ben and Jerry's and Breyer's do use fish products as a stabilizer in their ice creams. read more

I told myself I need to stop comparing business with one another, but it's tough because trying to find the best ice cream in the Bay Area was the motivation behind visiting Tara's. And guys, I think it's better than Ici's and Bi-Rite's. Yeah, I said it. And maybe this review is a little premature because there are about a gazillion other gourmet/organic/overly priced ice cream places I have yet to try (I'm looking at you, Humphry Slocombe!)...but what I can say right now is that I adore the creative selection Tara's offers and the texture and richness of their ice cream. While every time I come here and sample like ten different flavors, I think my favorites so far are the lucuma (which is almost like an earthy mango, hard to describe...you have to try it!) and the pandan (which tastes more like green tea than most green tea ice creams...very fragrant). I realize now I may be biased towards Tara's because a lot of their 'exotic' flavors pander to the Asian palate. It's hard to tell if their non-Asian exotic flavors just aren't as impressive or if it's because of my prejudiced tongue. read more

I've been meaning to come here for years, but once the living social deal popped up, I knew I had to go! .... I still waited til the day before it would expire to use it. hahaha The plan: head over here as soon as class let out, buy my yumminess, go home, pop it in the freezer, make it to class. What really happened: This boy texted me as I was on my way over, I went back to grab him, then we both headed to this area together. We ate lunch, grabbed some caffeinated beverages, then came. The flavours remind me a lot of any gelato place except the ones here are more unique, I feel. The service was unexpectedly amazing (especially considering how crazy we were acting after drinking far too much caffeine). The shop itself is pretty small though, so we grabbed our two pints to go ($20 value). ...and I stayed long enough in the shop that I missed my evening class. The two people working didn't seem to mind how indecisive I was though. In my pint was raspberry agave sorbet, lavender, and strawberry rose. All amazing.
