I love this place! It's our go to bakery for all birthday cakes. They use only fresh and natural ingredients and can make most cakes catered to your needs. They also usually have a cake ready to go - for those of us who may not always be as organized as we should be. Our guests either ask where we got the cake (because it's so good)...or they can already tell because they already love the bakery. Wow! What a hidden gem! The bakery generously accommodated me for a custom vegan cake at the last minute. I didn't expect them to be able to take such a short-term request but they were very kind about it. The cake was DELICIOUS, you would never guess it was vegan! I ordered some vegan and regular (dairy) cupcakes at the last minute for my family members birthday lunch. They have a dairy intolerance so I was delighted they had the vegan option. In addition I have other family members with tree- nut allergy and was happy to find out there was no tree nuts in the ingredients for the vegan ones when I called- Both style of cupcakes were moist and not overly sweet. Came into town for mine & husband's 5yr wedding anniversary lunch at a restaurant then came for dessert & ran into this very cute bakery & so glad I made the right choice. Love this women-owned delicious local bakery in El Cerrito!! Pamela ("Del" from Delaware and Gayle ( "Penn" from Pennsylvania) started this bakery a few years ago and combined their hometown names to make "PennDel" - so catchy! Inside was homey, clean and welcoming. Finally checked it off my yelp bucket list for Mother's Day and got a few Meyer lemon mini cheesecakes, vegan savory scone, and a 6 inch black and white cake, which is 3 tiered marbled chocolate and vanilla. It serves 6-8 ppl. Pamela graciously helped us out and explained the bakery and the many offerings to us. There were several cakes, including seasonal Meyer lemon, raspberry, classic chocolate/vanilla/carrot cake and cheesecakes along with tasty savory and sweet pastries, including gluten free and vegan options. The black and white cake was absolutely divine and it was love at first bite for my fam. The moist chocolate cake and the vanilla/chocolate buttercream pairing was scrumptious! It's recommended to thaw it at room temp for a few hours for best results. The cheesecakes and vegan scone were also really yummy. Since they been around awhile I have had the pleasure of trying more baked goods. I can really see this bakery being a staple of the community. Had a bday for my son and stopped in and they had a wonderful variety of cupcakes. I also grabbed a gf tea cake and a couple pumpkin cheesecakes for the party for those with different dietary needs. I stopped by PennDel's after a long day in El Cerrito with my family. We were craving sweets and I remembered that I had this bakery saved and wanted to try something here. I ordered two cupcakes and one banana bread. The cupcake does not have that "fresh" taste that you would get from a same day bakery. We could definitely tell that they were made and refrigerated or frozen beforehand, so that was a downside to our visit. The banana bread was not bad. We liked it more than we liked the cupcake. The ladies inside were very nice and patient as we looked and chose what we wanted. Overall, I would give PennDel's a 3/5 stars. read more

Cute little shop with lots of options. I was greeted when I walked in and since it was my first time coming a took some time to look around. I settled on dog treats (my dog loved these and he is a picky puppy), 3 shortbread Cookies (these were to die for), a rosemary and goat cheese scone (good but a little dry- I came in the afternoon), and some cupcakes (lemon, red velvet, and vanilla). PennDel's Bakehouse in El Cerrito is a hidden gem! My regular baker closed her business and left me desperately looking for someone who could match her strawberry cake in December. My family and I tried PennDel's Vegan, chocolate and red velvet cupcakes; also their chocolate chip, snickerdoodle and shortbread cookies. They were all pleasant delights to our taste buds. My dad saw this bakehouse on Yelp and wanted to try it since he is also a somewhat experienced baker. The muffin is beautifully delicious. It's got a soft fluffy texture and the flavor of nutmeg is soothing in the morning and the cinnamon sugar is a great topping to add a hint of sweetness. The biscuit is also fantastic. It's got nice brown crust that has a crispy/crunchy texture in contrast to it's inside that's soft with beautiful layers. My dad commented that it's hard to find a good biscuit that has such a wonderful texture. Can't really taste the sun dried tomato, but the flavors mostly come from the savory herbs. A welcome addition to the neighborhood, PennDel's Bakehouse was founded by friends and longtime food industry vets, Pamela Braxton and Gayle Tule-Chen. PennDel's Bakehouse is currently in a soft-opening phase, as for now they are open only on weekends, so there are limited days and hours for you to be able to order their organic, preservative-free cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other sweet and savory baked treats, which also includes many gluten-free and vegan options. The name PennDel reflects the owners original home states on the East Coast as Tule-Chen hails from Pennsylvania; Braxton from Delaware. I read about their opening on the Nosh food blog on the Berkeleyside website and I was excited to not only try them out, but also support this new exciting new business in my hometown of El Cerrito. Now, fans get to experience the early stages of supporting a local business finding its footing as they take their time to fine-tune their operations. Located on the ground floor of the Ohlone Gardens Apartment complex, street parking can be scarce at times, so I just parked in the nearby Moeser Lane Shopping Center across the street. I went on their first Sunday morning of operation and the place was buzzing with the owners and staff hosting excited new customers and a few locals looking to check out their new storefront and kitchen area. Currently, the set-up at PennDel's Bakehouse is simple as they have two huge glass cases filled with all of their current sweet and savory baked goods. Upon entry, my sightline was immediately drawn to their biscuits made with garlic, cheese and green onion, as I am a sucker with anything made with green onions. After ordering two of those, I also ordered a mini cheesecake, two of their chocolate chip cookies and a slice of their red velvet cake. I was intrigued by a number of other things in their two cases inside their bakery, including two types of bars, one with apricot and the other made peanut butter and jam and their German Chocolate Cupcakes. However, the one thing that really caught my eye was their full-sized Tiramisu cake that was on sale for $58 and boy I was tempted as it looked amazing, but I was trying to be good today, as my total bill for my five items that I did order came to $14.50 before tax and tip, which was not bad at all. Once I got home, I dove into my two chocolate chip cookies, cake slice and cheesecake and everything was fantastic. Nothing too overly sweet, but every item was mixed, baked, and iced to perfection. Their chocolate chip cookies had a unique kick to the thanks to an ingredient that I quite couldn't put my tastebuds on. I saved my two biscuits to enjoy the following morning for breakfast and I am so glad I did as warm and flavorful after a quick toast. Their team was nice enough to add in a small slice of their vanilla cake, which just goes to show how considerate they are to their new customers at PennDel's Bakehouse and it was a small morsel of deliciousness that has me instantly wanting to return for more. You better believe return visits are a must whenever I am in the neighborhood. I love the backstory of PennDel's Bakehouse's owners originally being introduced to one another through their kids school bonded over a shared interest of food and with their experience of working in local bakeries and restaurants over the years, the creative energy they are putting into their new business only shows. Over time, I think word will spread what a delightful sweet bakery they have here and they're going to be lining out the door at PennDel's Bakehouse and this is one wait that I am happy to partake in. read more
