I always stop by Sheng Kee Bakery whenever I visit 99 Ranch since they are in the same building. Great place for Taiwanese pastries and cakes. There are so many items I like here, especially the cream filled buns like the chocolate bun with cream, taro cream bun, and custard cream bun. However, I highly recommend AVOIDING the Beef Curry filled Bun, there is very little beef curry filling inside (see pictures below). I absolutely love Sheng Kee Bakery in the Pacific East Mall, Richmond. This is always a stop ~ regardless if we've eaten a meal, doing a quick stop at the market, or looking for a sweet treat. It's so fun to have such a deliciously array of sweet and savory grab & go items that tbh, rarely make it all the way home (lotsa car crumbs) haha. Recently we tried a pineapple bun and grabbed a few of the hot snack items including my ultimate favorite, the bbq pork tart. Yum! So buttery and crispy, with ample filling and just the perfect pocket size. I could have one of these every day. Sometimes you can find these on certain dim sum menus, but not all. Quick service, small spot within the mall, no indoor seating ~ essentially you grab a tray and pick the individually packaged items you like, pay, and on your way. Fair pricing and lotsa variety from moon cakes, whole cakes for purchase, buns, meat pies, pastries, and more. Whenever I need to pick up an Asian-style cake last minute for a special occasion, Sheng Kee is my go-to. We tried some mango mouse cakes and tiramisu from this bakery and they were so delicious! We are so happy we tried them and will be back for some more. The mousse cakes are not too sweet, and had the perfect combination of mouse and cake in them. The tiramisu was very delicious though sweeter than the mousse cakes. The Tiramisu also had the right balance between cake and mousse as well. We will definitely be back for some more dessert here and happy to see that they have several locations throughout the Bay Area and will be trying other locations around the area. read more

It gets crowded in the afternoon weekdays and all day weekends. I love this location for its selection of treats from savory to sweet, including the Hong Kong Milk Tea. I've got a sweet tooth - and I found this bakery hard to walk past with all the colorful cakes covered in fresh berries. Good quality. $10 minimum for cards. I saw a Japanese cheesecake - I probably should have gone with my instinct and taken that cake home. They didn't sell it in small slices so I didn't. Got some mango pieces. Good taste - not the best thing I ever had in my life though. The one piece had a lot of different layers. I liked that.... I suspect a lot of this was previously frozen or that the refrigerator was set too cold here. The inside middle layer was very crunchy frosty. Packaging was beautifully done and with a plastic fork included. Great to eat on the go. Ten dollar minimum for credit card use. For that I remove one star. My sweet tooth has recently caused me to avoid a sticky situation. You see I was heading to Trader Joes in Castro Valley but then realized they don't carry Dunkaroos. So I headed toward Safeway instead. On my way back I saw that a car drove inside the TJs that day. A Toyota Avalon. I got home and could hear the helicopters whirring above as I live very nearby. Been coming here for years since it's conveniently located across Ranch 99. Usually a quick grab and go; our usual go-tos: sweet toast, dinner rolls, and the occasional triangle sponge cake (was never a fan of their birthday cakes) or bbq pork pastries. We even bought $500 worth of gift card/coupons for my sister's tea ceremony last year because they have a few locations across the Bay for family and friends to visit and grab some baked goods. Fast forward to tonight-- we rush in thinking they close at 8pm (have gone at 7pm in the past and they would already be closed). We quickly grab a loaf of the SWEET toast & dinner rolls and the cashier rings up $9.80; we hand over a $10 gift certificate. The lady says we're like 20 cents under and we tell her it's okay and to keep the change, but she insisted that we had to buy another item....what kind of policy is that?? What takes the cake is that when we get home, we notice that she charged us for RAISIN toast instead of Sweet, which is almost $1 more. For those unfamiliar, Sheng Kee is a Taiwanese Bakery chain that has opened up roughly a dozen locations here in the Bay Area. They serve a variety of Asian breads, dessert options, as well as full (and delicious!) cakes for all occasions. While they have several sizable locations throughout the Bay, this particular location right across from 99 Ranch (I still call it Ranch 99) is definitely one of their smaller locations. They are typically pretty busy throughout the day, so it came get a bit claustrophobic as people are attempting to line up for their purchases. Although Sheng Kee prices are definitely on the higher end (typically ~$3/bun or dessert item), they keep their shelves pretty well stocked. And their food has always been pretty fresh, so I've never had an issue with the quality. If you are buying a birthday cake, make sure to also ask for a birthday cake topper. They used to also offer plates, utensils, and candles, but not sure if they have discontinued that. As the last time I asked for it, they stated they did not have any left. read more

I purchase the cake from this location at least 4 times a year, biweekly I purchase toast! I notice that they are different from other location sheng kee, for birthday cake they give the plates without verbally asking. For them I have ask few time and they mention they don't but I'll see others walking out with it. I was thinking may they ran out or don't offer plates anymore but this purchase they gave the plates to the white lady. I was third in line and purchase same cake but didn't design and different cashier got the cake and I ask her for plate she said they don't have any plates! I stated that the last lady who's buying the same cake got the plates and I'm just thinking is it because I'm not white?! she started asking the other cashier in Chinese " you just gave out the plates?" This bakery is always bustling with people even late into the afternoon. They are always well stocked with pastries & people bc it is directly across Ranch99. Bought their Cream Cheese Loaf as well as a garlic onion bread & summer romance. My Pastries: The Cream Cheese Loaf is reasonable for around $5.50. The cream cheese definitely adds that creamy smooth texture. While it is my favorite go to, I noticed that the bread in the inside tended to completely crack leaving empty pockets of air in my bread. You really don't get a full bite of bread, but still a reasonable purchase. Garlic Onion Bread had loads of green onion & lots of flavor, but after eating it you could see all the butter oozing out. Summer Romance is my favorite bc of the berry jam & outer bun which lends a creamy soft texture. This bun isn't overly sweet so it is perfect with a cup of coffee. The baked goods really had gone downhill. We went just on Sunday and got our usual pineapple bun, egg tart, and got a new item to try: sesame croissant. The pineapple bun was sooo flat, it was like the yeast died or something. The sesame croissant wasn't a croissant at all, the layers all stuck together and it was not flakey at all. The egg tart was really bad texture too. We also recently ordered tiramisu that wasn't real tiramisu. It was more of a chocolate mousse cake. I'm really disappointed. I was deceived. Sheng Kee is one of those bakeries that you can drop in and quickly grab a few items to go. They have a variety of pastries, cakes and buns, from savory to sweet! There are no tables or seats available. Most of the items are already packaged or wrapped up individually. The only items that are not boxed up are the cakes in the display window near the cashiers. Everything here is supposedly made fresh the day of. I don't think that's the case though. Every time I come here, I typically grab about 10 items. There would always be a few pastries or buns that were not soft and if there were any filling, it was dried up and crumbly when it's not supposed to. No one ever greets you or is cheerful. Tongs and trays are located at the entrance to grab what you want to buy so you don't contaminate the food. When I handed the tongs to the cashier when I went to pay, the lady grabbed it and aggressively threw it in the bucket located behind her. Located inside Pacific East mall, on the right hand side, directly across from the entrance to Ranch 99. It's super small so it can get real chaotic and claustrophobic in there. It's a U-Shape plan, so enter through the right, grab your tray and tongs, pile up all your goodies on your tray, and then make your way around to the cashier. They have a few cold items - sandwiches, cake slices, etc and then a few hot items right near the cashier. They have a good mix of sweet and savory buns. Most are about $1.75-2.99 but they also sell loaves of milk breads for about $6. They also offer whole cakes in their display case but you can pre order a custom cake too. I love their Portuguese tarts here. It's basically an egg tart but more creamy with yummy burnt sugar spots on top. This is a solid spot for a quick pastry snack. For the savory buns, definitely air fry for a couple min to warm up. They'll taste way better!! read more

It's basically an egg custard tart on steroids, but more eggy than custard-y if that makes any sense. It's a bit dense but still soft in the inside, and it'll literally melt in your mouth.
