I'll start by saying that I am ashamed of myself for not having some pictures here because everything looks AMAZING and everything is AMAZING. The shop is small and very rustic looking with amazing displays of everything delicious. We were staying very close and walking here in the morning was easy. First couple of days there were only a couple of people ahead of me on line... One the weekends, not so easy, line is always out the door. Why??? Because everything is AMAZING!!! Besides myself and my wife, I was buying for my three grandchildren who LOVE Fournèe. I purchased a good assortment of pastries to bring home including a morning bun, croissnst, almond danish, cheesy bun and some random items I that I pointed at. All amazing and all with their coffee which is also delicious. My next visit will definately include a sandwich or two and some of that inccredible look bread. The items are buttery delicious. We came back here today again after a long hike at Tilden and got a ton of bread. One loaf of Miche (French country bread) and one loaf of rye. We also tried one of their chocolate almond croissants which was quite yummy and still warm. The chocolate was oozing out. It was pretty sweet but not too sweet. This croissant was different from other croissants because it was a lot more dense and not that fluffy. I didn't have a problem with that. We both wanted to try their grougeres (French cheese puffs) but found out that they were discontinued. The customer in front of me said that they always have new things and you never know when they will discontinue something. He enjoyed the chocolate cloud cake. I found out today that I could get a light bake or a dark bake for the Miche. This was very good to know as last week I had a dark bake and it was very bitter. Today I intentionally got a light bake. Right next door is a Peet's coffee shop which is perfect for getting a cup of coffee and enjoying it with their fresh pastries. This is such a cute little neighborhood and the people in line today was all so friendly. I will be coming back to this charming bakery regularly to enjoy their amazing bread and pastries. read more

Found this place while I was a Cal student. Amazing place for pastries and cakes. Have gotten the valrohna chocolate cake here a few times for birthday cakes. Easy to preorder ahead for cakes. The cake is decadent with a rich chocolate flavor and the toffee adds great texture. Morning pastries galore-the cheese roll and fruit scones are my favorite. Coffee is solid too. Recommend going early, even at 8am the line can be out the door-though it moves quickly. Street parking is easy to find. read more

Did a DIY pastry crawl for my sister's 40th. We hit 10 bakeries and this was easily top 3. The strawberry cake we got and the traditional ham and machego cheese sandwich with French rosemary butter was out of this world. Service is prompt and friendly. It's right across from the Claremont so parking can be tough but lots of cars are coming and going so spots free up quick. Buy some pastries and a coffee and go sit outside on a bench and you for a perfect Saturday. read more

Delicious!!!!!! This is my friend's favorite bakery in Berkeley and I came here to get her a box of pastries for her birthday. I arrived around 7:30 and it was empty, but as I was deciding what to get there was a line out the door. Everything looks delicious it was so hard to choose. For myself I got the egg and ham croissant which was so unique and absolutely delicious. A perfect savory treat. I also had a bite of their strawberry-rhubarb breton which was also delicious, kinda like a shortbread cookie with cream and strawberry. Dang !!!! Another 5 stars because no one (beside La Châtaigne in Lafayette) does croissants as they ought to be. I would genuinely advise you to use the amazing pre-paid order they have by simply calling the store. If they don't pick up - as they are kind of super busy- leave your number and you get a call back. It secures that what you want will be bagged and ready for you to grab, you can even walk straight in and wait near the refrigerated counters where they will simply ask for your name. This is a small bakery in a quaint neighborhood known for its French pastries. A family favorite and v European. They offer bread, quiche, sandwiches on baguette and pastries. I was in town visiting family and was told about this place. You need to get there early, I mean before they open early. We got there 15 minutes before they opened and there were 10 people ahead of us already. As soon as you get close to the place you can smell the euphoric smell of bread and pastries. We tried few things here, the vegetable quiche, chocolate croissant, plain croissant, almond chocolate croissant, olive bread and they were all fantastic. My favorite thing that I had and I could eat everyday for the rest of my life is the canelé. Absolutely magnificent!! Just so so so good. I've had them in France and this one was still better. liked the pain au chocolat though i wouldn't go out of my way for it from sf. there was a line out the door on a sunday morning, waited about 10 minutes to get to the front and place my order, they grab your items and hand it to you from across the counter. just a bench inside (no one really sits on it), and a couple other benches outside. read more

I loved everything I ordered here. The croissant dough is so good and flaky. Regardless of savory or sweet or just plain, they always maintain the texture (no exceeded oil or sugar that ruins the structure). There's a good balance of bready, buttery, and flaky. Unfortunately, there are not many seats inside or outside. But that's probably why they are able to keep the price reasonable. And you'll be glad to take them to go because the savory ones tastes better once you reheat them in the oven. I will make a trip just for Fournee. read more

Was in the area and decided to stop by. Street parking is available, but tricky during its busiest hours, but we managed to find a spot a few blocks away. What I tried: coriander walnut scone (3/5) -- the texture of the dough alone was very spongy, but the walnut and coriander went well together fruit scone (3/5) -- wish the distribution of fruit was better in this. The scone was quite dry, cake-like, and tasted of nothing. The turbinado sugar is the only thing that helped it almond croissant (5/5) -- sweet, nutty, crispy pain au chocolat (5/5) -- beautiful flaky layers and very good quality dark chocolate I'd be willing to try out more of their items if I'm in the area again. read more

Excellent, excellent. Great variety of pastries, desserts, and bread, and you can't go wrong with anything. Expect a line on weekend mornings but the wait is well worth it. Duck fat fougasse - this is special. So flavorful, olive bits are chopped small which I appreciate. The texture of the bread is great with a lot of chew. Pain au chocolat - classic, delicious, double bar of chocolate Traditional croissant - a classic also done well Paris Brest - this was phenomenal. Crisp exterior, cream is rich and luxurious, and the hazelnuts and chocolate pieces put it over the top. Not sure how they got the chocolate pieces to be soft even when chilled, but it's magical. Gougere - the only thing I wouldn't get again, just due to personal preference. It's huge and has good flavor, but I would have probably enjoyed this more warmed up. read more

Love this cozy cute warm bakery. I bought 10 caneles and I'm so glad that I did! It's crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The Paris Breast is another item that you must try. It looks sweet, but it's not. The cream is smooth and light. The crust is perfect contrast to the cream. The lemon shortbread is not what I used to have. We believe there's corn bread grains in it, and not much lemon flavor. Very unique. With all the sweet goodies, of course I had to buy some savory treats. I wish I bought more of the egg & ham, it's a meal by itself. Whole egg that was wrapped with a slice of ham, backed in a croiffin shell, it'll definitely give you enough energy to start the day. Great service and amazing pastries. I ordered the Brook cherries scone, berry croissant, and Paris Brest. They were very different and subtly complex in their flavors. The Paris-Brest was a perfect pate-a-choux piped and filled with pastry cream. Nuts, liqueur and chunks of chocolate made the flavors pop. The croissant had berries and marscapone. The spices were subtle and complimentary. I liked the cherry scone but I prefer sour cherries in my baked goods. read more

I was staying at the nearby Claremont Hotel and suddenly had the craving for some pastries. I had no idea Founee was just literally at the bottom of the hill, so I had to take a nice stroll to the bakery. I waited in line for about 20-25 mins which wasn't too bad. I came around 11:30am last Saturday in which most of the popular pastries were already taken. Luckily, I was able to order their chocolate almond croissant, chocolate chip oatmeal cookie, hazelnut with Italian chocolate cookie, and a Fougasse bread. Our pastries were hot & fresh with the perfect amount of sweetness to them. My personal favorite was their Noisette & Oat Cookie which had freshly crisp hazelnuts and Gianduja chocolate. I can eat this cookie once a day. I also was a fan of their Fougasse bread which had taste of lemon zest and kalamata olives. This bread is also cooked in duck fat which gives this incredible taste. I'm a fan of Fournee and would love to come back again. read more

Their food is generally pretty good: ranging from average (certain seasonal desserts, their ham and cheese croissants, scones) to excellent (toffee cake, almond croissants, certain beads). They are on the pricey side but that's expected in the Bay Area. The reason for the two stars: of the last three times I've been there, they have gotten my order wrong TWICE. Once in a while is totally an acceptable accident but two thirds wrong is really poor service. The workers are nice but not exactly approachably friendly. They take the order in front of the register, receive payment, and then step over to the counter to collect the items. The issue is when you (I) order a lot of stuff, they get collected behind the counter and placed into a large shopping bag so you can't see what you are getting (or not getting). They walk around behind the counter grabbing stuff and those that have paid stand in a small corner away from the purchasing line so it's difficult to see what they do (or don't) pick up. The first time I came home to find my order of half loaf (they sell the large ones by halves, if you want) missing. I brushed it off as an accident. I don't live close enough to go back before they close and I wouldn't have proof anyways. This last time I went, they didn't put in a pastry! At this point, I'm down about $16 and beginning to wonder if it's deliberate. *sigh* So now I have to decide whether I boycott them altogether or only buy one or two items so I can see what I am getting or be the weirdo that takes out every item in a large shopping bag to double check their work. *sigh again* read more

Ended up here by chance last weekend before closing and got one of the only pastries left (a delicious almond, cream, and raspberry pastry) and it was so good that we came back to try more things this Saturday morning. Small bakery in East Oakland, at the foot of the Clarmont Hotel. Be prepared to wait in line, outside. Service is efficient, but not particularly friendly. They pull large orders for people who call ahead and line may slow way down. They also sell coffee from airpots... big mistake. It slows service down even more & totally unnecessary b/c there is a Peet's Coffee next door. Now, the baked goods- outstanding! One of the best scones I've ever had- the walnut & coriander. PERFECT crumb! Perfect salt. Lovely! Wish I'd gotten more. The ham and cheese croissant was also delightful. Rosemary ham & manchego. Quality ingredients.
