    Turkey sandwich with sourdough

Love this spot - huge and delicious salads, great sandwiches. Love that they come with sprouts by default. Sourdough is super soft, great choice if you don't like bread with hard/tough crusts, but it's not very sour.

    Berkeley Special Sandwich

One of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley! Used to come here all the time during undergrad, so Mezzo holds a soft spot in my heart. Usually lunchtime is very busy, but we stopped by for dinner and it was not too crowded. My go-to order is the Berkeley Special with cheddar cheese and veggies on honey wheat bread and it never disappoints! Everything tastes very fresh and the honey wheat bread is amazing, love how it is so soft. Mezzo is well known for its humongous portion sizes, so this sandwich can easily be shared. If you really want a meal that lasts for days, I would recommend ordering a salad - that is truly a behemoth. No other restaurant has bang for buck quite like Mezzo. Perfect for hungry college students - they really know their customers. Highly recommend!

Pretty great it's followed the way of the phoenix

O Mezzo, you complete me! One of my favorite college eats, myself and other alum came here and had a splendid lunch on the patio, talking about everything ! The veggie delight salad, so appropriately named, wirh its fresh honey wheat with sunflower seeds.... So perfect. She had a BLTA, which also looked yummy. Bag of bread ends, alll good to go!!!

How do I not eat here every single day.

As is not uncommon, I am very late to this party. I've spent a lot of time next door and would often look at the line and peer over into Mezzo and with a generally blank brain see what was going on but really dig no deeper or wonder why the fuss why are people lining up. None of that. Just a blank brain then I get a second beer at Raleigh's. So. Last weekend by chance just for something new ended up here thanks to Yelp and was all. Oh. Wait a minute. It's this place. And. From now on. I will always go to Mezzo. So fresh, so abundant, such a great price point, such a happy vibe. I had leftovers for days but that's a learning experience and maybe next time it's a half sammy and salad or soup or something like that. Because an entire sammy and entire salad means you have half of each left over for the next day. Which is fine, if that's what you want. This is just an observation to help you plan. That's about it. It was pretty much perfect for the casual eating scene. In and out with most of your wallet intact. I liked it a lot.

The place is pretty awesome and they have great prices and portions! We got the chef salad and the combo with a BLTA w/tossed greens. I will say that the portions are humongous and I wasn't able to finish all of it, so there was a lot to take home. The seating was plentiful and have this really cute outdoor patio that they share with the bar next to them and you can order drinks there too! It was a cool place and definitely a must try if you are in Berkeley! They say "the works" which means everything/all toppings, which was unique and it was pretty quick watching them assemble the salad + sandwich. One thing to note is that the sandwiches have untoasted bread, so keep that in mind and after eating so much of the salad I unfortunately got a little tired of it because it seemed like the flavor of the sandwich and salad was so similar because they also load the sandwich and salad with micro greens. The green goddess is great dressing and would recommend! Might try a different sauce/sandwich else next time. Service was average and they all were working hard!

    Pastrami on honey wheat

Can I just say how much I LOVE Mezzo!?!? I mean, what's not to love...healthy fresh and massive portions of salads and sandwiches on in house made bread all for less than $13! Get the sandwiches with "the works", you won't regret it. I always save half for a meal the next day, it's too big to finish in one sitting. My favorite is the pastrami, as I like heavier meaty sandwiches. But honestly, you can't go wrong with anything at Mezzo. You order, pay, grab a seat and help yourself to water then bus your own table when you're done. Simple and easy!

Mezzo is a solid pick in Berkeley. The interior is a vibe and the sandwiches are easily one of the best in the area. This place is a Berkeley classic and there is a reason for it. When looking at reviews and photos the food looked okay but you can't taste a photo. I decided to get something that would normally be boring and uninviting. I ordered the tuna sandwich on the Japanese milk bread, and neither of those disappointed. The tuna salad was well seasoned, flavorful, and not overly crunchy or artificially sweet. Also the sandwich itself was easily shareable between two people so it's the perfect size to do a sandwich/salsa combo which I'll do next time!

I've been eating from this fine establishment since the early 00s. This review is long coming. The food is simple, affordable, healthy and delicious. A real crowd pleaser of a place. The service is fast, always friendly and welcoming. You can't go wrong with anything here. And they have a good coffee bar. I hope this place stays in business forever. Long live Mezzo. Or Cafe Intermezzo back in my days.

half BLTA half tossed greens with Greek goddess dressing

Mezzo is always a fan favorite, you can tell by the long line that usually extends out the door. Thought the line is long, it moves quickly so you're never really waiting more than 10 mins to place your order. Mezzo serves sandwiches, salads, soups, and breakfast burritos (9-11am)! I am a big fan of their sandwiches and salads. They customize the sandwiches to your liking, even the bread! My favorite is the standard honey wheat bread, so soft and tasty. In terms of the salad, I always do the Greek goddess salad dressing. The pricing is fair and the portions are filling (although I have noticed the most recent time that the salads appear to have gotten smaller than when I last went a year ago). The restaurant is self service in terms of getting your own water and utensils, finding your own table, and bussing your own dishes. It's also connected to Raleigh's Pub which is a popular spot amongst the students, especially on Tuesdays when they have their taco Tuesday special. Mezzo is a Berkeley classic, you must try it at least once!

This was my 1st time getting to try breakfast from Mezzo. We ordered our food for delivery. We had breakfast burritos and a few of us ordered avocado toast. The avocado toast was good, the picture shows the toast. It was delicious and enough to share with a friend.

The staff making my salad. Endless amounts of greens!

The end all, be all of salad spots. An institution among UCB alum, staff and current students. Mezzo's original location tragically burned in the 2010's, but came back and is still as good as it's always been. The salads are massive, will fill you up and it's a great spot to chill and have a healthy bite. They have pastries, house-made kombucha and excellent soup options too. You're not having salad in The Bay until you've been to Mezzo.

Turkey sandwich and the veggie delight! 5 stars for both, really good portions on the salad, and the sandwich itself was very tasty as well. I love all the mix-ins for the salad, and the bundle of sprouts, really fresh and voluminous.

Mezzo is an icon. I've been here numerous times in my time at Berkeley. I have a slight addiction to their honey wheat bread (you can buy slices on their own, but I believe they now require you to make another purchase). Sandwich recommendations are chicken salad and BLTA. Always get the honey wheat bread. Poppy seed dressing for salads. I also really like their Thai coconut curry soup, which is sometimes their soup of the day. It comes with cubed up chicken and rice in the soup and goes well with the honey wheat bread on the side. Their pickles are sweeter than normal but crunchy and delicious. My only complaint is that their signature pineapple slice is unripe and tart at least 70% of the time. Maybe consider other seasonal fruits?

Is the Mezzo poppyseed dressing vegan?

No. I asked them in store and they said it contains dairy

    Yes

    Does Mezzo take Apple Pay?

    Yes

    Does Mezzo take cash?

    Yes & debit cards

    Can you place order online?

Unfortunately not as of now but you can call to place an order. I've called to place an order for breakfast burritos in the morning multiple times. Sometimes they may not pick up but I try again usually and someone is bound to pick up

Do they serve burritos later on Sundays, as brunch?

    Yes! Up until 11:00 am.

Is their back patio open now?

    Yes

How can I buy a gift card for someone?

How's the WiFi there? Are there outlets for charging laptop?

WiFi works well, not sure about outlets.

Is Mezzo ever going to reopen?

    They've reopened now

When will this place open up or is it closed permanently?

They're open! I've been a few times now.

    When will Mezzo be re-opening?

    Mezzo opened in mid-June.

Has Mezzo re-opened, and if so, are they doing dine-in? Thanks!

    they haven't reopened

Do they serve their breakfast burritos all day?

    No, only until 10:30am!

How does the vinaigrette salad dressing compare to the original? I swear I could drink a cup!

As far as I can tell, it's the same.....delicious!

Are the bread dairy and egg free?

The honey wheat and Seeded Baguette use an egg wash to attach the seeds to the bread, so if you're dairy-free you're in the clear but egg-free needs to request the French Baguette.

    Are their ingredients [mostly] organic?

    Yrs

Hi. I was wondering if the food is gluten free? Thanks! :)

The salad is gluten free w/o the croutons or poppyseed dressing.

Are there any on-demand delivery services (Caviar, Postmates, etc.) that will deliver Mezzo to folks in & around Berkeley? If so, which ones?

Mezzo is available through PostMates for sure.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.

I like that they have a patio area, but it's been full each time I've been, so I haven't had a chance to sit outside. The staff is kind, though they tend to be a bit slow when taking orders at the front. I guess it's nice that they don't rush things, but it can be a bit frustrating when the line is long and they're chatting with each person ordering, which feels like forever. However, once you sit down, the food is delivered quickly. During my first visit, I ordered the Lobster Roll with fries, a donut to-go, and we shared an order of Fried Mozzarella Sticks. The donut was very mild; I've had way better vegan donuts, so I wouldn't get one again. I thought the lobster roll was good, but not great. It did not remind me of a lobster roll at all and was too acidic in my opinion, so I wouldn't get that again either. I loved the mozzarella sticks, though. As a vegan, that typically dislikes vegan cheese, they were a hit. My non-vegan best friend loved them too! During my second visit, I ordered a Jalapeño Business sandwich with potato salad, rocky road to-go, and mozzarella sticks to share since I loved them so much the first time. My friend got a Buffalo Ranch Fried Chicken sandwich, and we decided to swap halves to try more things. I love spicy food, so if I had to choose a favorite, I'd pick my sandwich over hers, but both sandwiches were fantastic! The potato salad was good, but kind of bland for my taste. The rocky road was so yummy, and like last time, the mozzarella sticks did not disappoint. I love supporting fully vegan restaurants and will definitely go back to try more items on the menu.
