Long time customer since my college days here. I was here the first week after they rebuilt after the fire, and so I've seen the quality start high and remain after all these years. Came for a dinner pickup to-go on a weekday evening. Things I love: - HUGE portions: all other considerations aside, I'd always default to splitting a meal or counting on leftovers. Their salads and sandwiches both are served in generous portions, which helps justify the cost, which itself is not that unreasonable to begin with. - Seating: nice areas inside, as well as an outdoor space that's shared with the neighboring bar. During the daytime when the bar is not open, the back space is a great area to spread out in, and even work in with a small group. - Staff: I read a few negative reviews about the staff here, but I have had nothing but positive experiences, especially given the high customizability of the meals here, they do a great job accommodating requests and making sure you have the meal that you're expecting. - Breakfast burritos: gotta shoutout my favorite breakfast burritos. Like the other reviews state--portions are sizable! The Chef Salad is hefty and I love it. I especially enjoyed the beans (garbanzo + kidney) and sprouts they add. Lots of fiber and protein. LOVED the thick side of sliced bread!! Lightly sweet and very earthy tasting. The menu isn't very intuitive--the "salad" menu sign doesn't show the protein options; the proteins are under the "sandwiches" sign. I admittedly stepped into the line underprepared, but the staff here could be so much kinder lol. Latte was alright. A tad too bitter for my taste. They have extensive indoor and patio seating. Loved the giant salads at the original Cafe Intermezzo. In fact, that salad started my love for big salads. This was my first visit to Mezzo. I arrived at noon on Friday and there was a long line that moved quickly. It's order at the counter and seat yourself. The inside is large bright and spacious with many tables inside and outside in a covered patio. When I first stepped inside I was greeted by the familiar smell of their freshly baked breads and saw my favorite honey wheat bread. I ordered the chefs salad with sliced turkey breast and the yogurt green goddess dressing. Their dressings are all made in house and it was hard not to order my fave poppyseed dressing. Loved watching the giant salad get tossed and dressed then put into a big wooden bowl. Went here for the first time and really enjoyed it! The portion sizes are HUGE, especially the salad. Would definitely recommend splitting as a group if possible. The food was pretty good, I especially liked the BLTA sandwich ! We went on a busy day and were able to get through the line relatively quickly, though it was a little crazy when ordering. It was a little difficult to find seating too, but it is nice that it shares a patio with Raleigh's that opens up some more seating. I've spent a lot of time next door and would often look at the line and peer over into Mezzo and with a generally blank brain see what was going on but really dig no deeper or wonder why the fuss why are people lining up. I am a big fan of their sandwiches and salads. They customize the sandwiches to your liking, even the bread! My favorite is the standard honey wheat bread, so soft and tasty. In terms of the salad, I always do the Greek goddess salad dressing. The pricing is fair and the portions are filling (although I have noticed the most recent time that the salads appear to have gotten smaller than when I last went a year ago). Mezzo is an icon. I've been here numerous times in my time at Berkeley. I have a slight addiction to their honey wheat bread (you can buy slices on their own, but I believe they now require you to make another purchase). Sandwich recommendations are chicken salad and BLTA. Always get the honey wheat bread. Poppy seed dressing for salads. I also really like their Thai coconut curry soup, which is sometimes their soup of the day. It comes with cubed up chicken and rice in the soup and goes well with the honey wheat bread on the side. Their pickles are sweeter than normal but crunchy and delicious. My only complaint is that their signature pineapple slice is unripe and tart at least 70% of the time. I ordered their Roast Beef sandwich without horseradish. There was ample space in the restaurant for us to wait and enjoy our lunch at. They made the sandwiches in front of us & all the ingredients looked quite fresh, especially the bean sprouts. The portions were generous, and I finished one half before becoming full. For someone with jaw issues, it was a bit difficult to eat the sandwich in big bites, but it was delicious nonetheless!
