The food? 5 stars. The sandwiches and salads are just so fresh and so good. The service? Eh. Today I got a pretty snappy employee who made a face when helping my guest. It was their first time here so that wasn't very nice! Pretty disappointing. I came on a Saturday afternoon and it was moderately busy. We opted to sit indoors because the patio area was hot.

Went here for the first time and really enjoyed it! The portion sizes are HUGE, especially the salad. Would definitely recommend splitting as a group if possible. The food was pretty good, I especially liked the BLTA sandwich ! We went on a busy day and were able to get through the line relatively quickly, though it was a little crazy when ordering. It was a little difficult to find seating too, but it is nice that it shares a patio with Raleigh's that opens up some more seating. We went on a hot day and it can get pretty warm back there!

I just have to say this place is very fresh customer service is always a pleasure they are fast the pineapples are sweet and the juice flys from every bite and the price g is affordable all around 10's from me oh and they have homemade kombuchas which are good too if you like kombuchas

(+) Giant portion, not exaggerating. My chef's salad was delicious. Poppyseed dressing and salami. Enjoyed the slice of wheat bread too. (+) Nostalgic, loved this place during undergrad before it burned down. It's even better now and so glad it's back in business. (+) Refreshing strawberry agua fresca. If I could have eaten more, would've also had some soup or half a sandwich. (+) Lots of seating and the patio in the back is so nice. Great layout. (+) Surprised of how nice the bathrooms situation was. Multiple individual bathrooms (I didn't even count there were so many) and a communal sink in the middle to wash hands. So efficient, less likely to wait even when crowded.. such a considerate detail of the remodel.

Uhmmm yessss No notes, line always goes by quicker than you think. Gigantic portions, I always have leftovers and back in the day I would just order mezzo for my weekly meal prep if I knew I was going to be on a crunch that week. I love how open and spacious the restaurant is. Patio is very nice and air feels fresh. Hard to find parking in the area but it's so worth the extra search and walk over

Love this spot! Plenty of inside and outside seating with such a comfy vibe. Their sandwich breads are all fresh and flavorful and they have a variety to choose from. The sandwiches and soups are great, ingredients are fresh and so good! Love the pineapple they give you on the side too. This is the perfect lunch spot!

Love this spot - huge and delicious salads, great sandwiches. Love that they come with sprouts by default. Sourdough is super soft, great choice if you don't like bread with hard/tough crusts, but it's not very sour.

One of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley! Used to come here all the time during undergrad, so Mezzo holds a soft spot in my heart. Usually lunchtime is very busy, but we stopped by for dinner and it was not too crowded. My go-to order is the Berkeley Special with cheddar cheese and veggies on honey wheat bread and it never disappoints! Everything tastes very fresh and the honey wheat bread is amazing, love how it is so soft. Mezzo is well known for its humongous portion sizes, so this sandwich can easily be shared. If you really want a meal that lasts for days, I would recommend ordering a salad - that is truly a behemoth. No other restaurant has bang for buck quite like Mezzo. Perfect for hungry college students - they really know their customers. Highly recommend!

O Mezzo, you complete me! One of my favorite college eats, myself and other alum came here and had a splendid lunch on the patio, talking about everything ! The veggie delight salad, so appropriately named, wirh its fresh honey wheat with sunflower seeds.... So perfect. She had a BLTA, which also looked yummy. Bag of bread ends, alll good to go!!!

How do I not eat here every single day.
    Markus N.

As is not uncommon, I am very late to this party. I've spent a lot of time next door and would often look at the line and peer over into Mezzo and with a generally blank brain see what was going on but really dig no deeper or wonder why the fuss why are people lining up. None of that. Just a blank brain then I get a second beer at Raleigh's. So. Last weekend by chance just for something new ended up here thanks to Yelp and was all. Oh. Wait a minute. It's this place. And. From now on. I will always go to Mezzo. So fresh, so abundant, such a great price point, such a happy vibe. I had leftovers for days but that's a learning experience and maybe next time it's a half sammy and salad or soup or something like that. Because an entire sammy and entire salad means you have half of each left over for the next day. Which is fine, if that's what you want. This is just an observation to help you plan. That's about it. It was pretty much perfect for the casual eating scene. In and out with most of your wallet intact. I liked it a lot.

Oh yeah, you gotta come get a cheddar cheese jalapeño bread, pastrami with bacon and provolone cheese. I could taste everything on this sandwich and loved it. I'm really funny with giving out fives, but this was a good one. Service was good also attentive. Oh this was around 2:30/ 6-23-26

    Isaac C.

Mezzo is a solid pick in Berkeley. The interior is a vibe and the sandwiches are easily one of the best in the area. This place is a Berkeley classic and there is a reason for it. When looking at reviews and photos the food looked okay but you can't taste a photo. I decided to get something that would normally be boring and uninviting. I ordered the tuna sandwich on the Japanese milk bread, and neither of those disappointed. The tuna salad was well seasoned, flavorful, and not overly crunchy or artificially sweet. Also the sandwich itself was easily shareable between two people so it's the perfect size to do a sandwich/salsa combo which I'll do next time!

    Can I bring my dog?

    yes

Is the Mezzo poppyseed dressing vegan?

No. I asked them in store and they said it contains dairy

Is this the same as Intermezzo from years ago? Same owners?

    Yes

    Does Mezzo take Apple Pay?

    Yes

    Does Mezzo take cash?

    Yes & debit cards

    Can you place order online?

Unfortunately not as of now but you can call to place an order. I've called to place an order for breakfast burritos in the morning multiple times. Sometimes they may not pick up but I try again usually and someone is bound to pick up

Do they serve burritos later on Sundays, as brunch?

    Yes! Up until 11:00 am.

Is their back patio open now?

    Yes

How can I buy a gift card for someone?

How's the WiFi there? Are there outlets for charging laptop?

WiFi works well, not sure about outlets.

Is Mezzo ever going to reopen?

    They've reopened now

Is Mezzo opening again soon? Have tried calling a few times, website and yelp page don't look updated

Yes! I just saw their IG post stating June 15th is their comeback date -- so excited :)…

When will this place open up or is it closed permanently?

They're open! I've been a few times now.

    When will Mezzo be re-opening?

    Mezzo opened in mid-June.

Has Mezzo re-opened, and if so, are they doing dine-in? Thanks!

    they haven't reopened

Do they serve their breakfast burritos all day?

    No, only until 10:30am!

How does the vinaigrette salad dressing compare to the original? I swear I could drink a cup!

As far as I can tell, it's the same.....delicious!

Are the bread dairy and egg free?

The honey wheat and Seeded Baguette use an egg wash to attach the seeds to the bread, so if you're dairy-free you're in the clear but egg-free needs to request the French Baguette.

    Are their ingredients [mostly] organic?

    Yrs

Hi. I was wondering if the food is gluten free? Thanks! :)

The salad is gluten free w/o the croutons or poppyseed dressing.

Idk if it was our timing or order, but the matcha was slightly watery and did not have a strong flavor. Additionally, my ube tasted like straight coconut than ube to the point where my husband was like yo they dyed some coconut foam purple LOL I highly doubt that was the case, but point made. The interior is fine, small but tables and wifi if you want to get some work done or study. Prices are what they are for matcha right now so I was sad to pay those prices and get a drink that was just okay. I'm not sure I'd give this spot a chance again, but eh there are a lot of competitors to give a try instead.

I've visited elaichi twice since in the area already and I plan on going back again. My first visit was on a Monday morning with a friend. I ordered the Banana Chai Einspanner (chai with banana sea salt cold foam) with oat milk and the Aloo Tiki Paratha Roll (potato fritter with cilantro chutney, red onion and garlic yogurt). My friend ordered a hot latte and the Paratha Quiche (tomato, red onion, Serrano and cilantro). We also shared a piece of Pistachio Cake. The Banana Chai Einspanner is simply the best drink I have ever had in my entire life. I am truly not kidding. It is so decadent, smooth, spicy, fresh. This is the best drink to grace this plant. My friend was really happy with her latte as well. I wouldn't say it strikes the "classic chai" chord, as this is incredibly sweet, so if you're looking for that, I would select a more basic option on the menu. It's also worth noting, the Banana Chai is a seasonal option for the summer. As for the food, everything was delicious. The Pistachio Cake was moist and had such great flavor. The crusts on both of our savory dishes were so flaky! I visited again on a Tuesday morning (yes the next day) and ordered the Banana Chai Einspanner once again and the quiche. Both were as delicious as the first time around. And the product isn't it all. The staff at elaichi are incredibly friendly. Even when the shop was busy on the Monday morning, we were taken care of with respect and care. I can tell the staff also have good relationships with those in the community. I think I would've liked just a little more depth and richness, but it's still a drink I'd happily order again. I also tried the genmaicha latte, which was less sweet than the Uji matcha. I really liked how the toasted, nutty flavor of the genmaicha balanced the sweetness, though I thought it slightly overpowered the matcha. Hello, my fellow café junkies…read more I LOVE little cafés. I will happily spend my hard-earned money on an overpriced chai latte while sitting somewhere cute pretending I have my life together. So when I say I'm definitely not coming back here, just know it pains my café-loving heart. First, let me give credit where credit is due: the atmosphere is GREAT. Super cute. Super cool. Great little hidden spot. The service, however? SucKs--with a capital K. ‍ Here's how my first--and probably last--visit went: 1. We ordered THREE chai lattes: two hot chai lattes and one iced chai latte with oat milk. Pretty straightforward. Nobody was ordering a 14-step potion from Hogwarts. 2. We received only two drinks. So, channeling my inner Karen from Boyle Heights, I politely went back and said, "Excuse me, we ordered THREE chai lattes." 3. They told me they hadn't charged me for the third drink. Okay! No problem. I work my ass off. I don't mind spending money. Charge me, hermana. Let's get this chai flowing. 4. I took a sip of my supposedly hot chai latte and immediately my taste buds sounded the emergency alarm: NOPE. THAT'S COFFEE. 5. I looked at my husband suspiciously and asked, "Is yours chai or coffee?" He took his first sip and said, "This is coffee." At this point, the chai lattes had apparently entered the Witness Protection Program because nobody could find them. 6. I went back. To their credit, they were perfectly willing to remake the drinks. Thank you! And when we finally received the two hot chai lattes, they were actually GOOD. Crisis temporarily averted. 7. THEN I looked over at my friend holding the supposedly iced chai latte with oat milk and thought, Wait a minute... "Taste yours." He takes a sip. "This is coffee." GIRL. THREE chai lattes ordered. THREE chai lattes misunderstood. At that point, I wasn't ordering beverages anymore. I was participating in a listening-comprehension assessment. ‍ The person taking our order seemed rushed, distracted, and all over the place. And listen--mistakes happen. I teach for a living. I have patience. But when every single drink in one order is wrong, we've moved beyond "oops" and entered performance art. No manchen--venimos a gastar, no a pendejear. ‍ So here's my recommendation: If you're particular about actually receiving the beverage you ordered, you may want to try another café. Or, if this place has an app, USE THE APP. Let technology translate "chai latte" into "chai latte" because apparently the spoken version is giving everybody trouble. Better yet, buy your drinks somewhere else and bring them here. Then you can enjoy the cute atmosphere without participating in Chai Latte Roulette: Will It Be Chai? Will It Be Coffee? Nobody Knows! The place is called Hidden Café, and after today's experience... I can see why it's hidden. Cute environment? Absolutely. Would I trust them with another three-chai-latte mission? Esta mamona la cosa. Hard pass. ‍ Come for the atmosphere. Bring your own drink. And may the odds of receiving what you ordered be ever in your favor. Signed, A recovering Chicana Karen from Boyle Heights who just wanted her damn chai.

The menu is pretty extensive, and everything sounded so delicious. We settled on the "Blackberries in Napa" summer mocktail, which they were able to make with oat milk (although whipped cream was still made with regular). It was the perfect cold beverage for a hot day in Berkeley. Right mix of bitterness from the espresso, creaminess from the blackberry whip, sweetness (and the slightest pinch of earthiness) from the blackberry-sumac jam at the bottom, and refreshing from the mint leaf at the top. The dried black mulberries were a nice touch also. Would love to come back and try everything else and support this Palestinian-owned business more often!

Baristas explained that they are up for trying different and sometimes unusual combinations for their customers. I wasn't adventurous this time, but it made me want to explore in the future. I came here to work, hoping for a relatively warm and cozy spot that wasn't too sleepy. I was not disappointed. The wifi was good, music was fun and unobtrusive. Decorations and layout gave a friendly, welcoming environment. Not only were the benches and padded chairs comfy, the ambiance was kept even in the bathroom. Spacious, warm lighting, cute bathroom with a great mirror and cool sink. I don't ever ding places for hospital-looking bathrooms (you know, fluorescent lights, questionable floors, sand paper toilet paper...) but this was one of the few where I was impressed. Good to know: Jaffa cakes are only available on the weekend Parking: Some of the streets nearby are resident-only parking so make sure to double check!

That, however, shouldn't detract from the personalized experience you'd likely receive with how small the coffee bar is. If you're expecting something more permanent this coffee shop is more like a temporary coffee cart that has roots in the back corner of this gift shop On the whole this place despite the hidden location has folks very much eager to bring specialty coffee to anybody interested. They have a large selection of relatively high end coffee in the likes of Geisha from Panama and Ethiopian coffees. Additionally, they're the only place I've ever seen across the US that is showcasing any coffee grown in China which is nice to see as that allows more exploration into how the terroir affects the taste of coffee For my first time here I came with a small group of coffee enthusiasts so we tried a selection of their Alo Main Station (notes of Sweet Orange, Bergamont, and Peach Oolong Tea), Finca Santa Maria (notes of Cherry, Mango, and Berry Jam), and Lerida Loma Washed (notes of White Floral, Mandarin Orange, and Longan) Each cup was uniquely different from each other but arguably the most enjoyed was their cheapest option in the Alo Main Station at $9. Each cup seemed completely different and may seem pretentious to say but they did have sweeter notes that you'd be very unlikely to taste from your well known coffee chains. This place definitely caters to the coffee enthusiasts in a way where even my group wasn't quite near the level of but it had a great atmosphere, nice outdoor seating, and staff who were very passionate about their craft If anything, I would probably come back as they do elevate coffee for those who are unaware of coffee coming from China but that coffee doesn't need to taste bitter, burnt, or chocolatey. The cups here were more like tasting a mellowed fruit juice but it just happens to be coffee. That said, unless you are eager to try specialty coffee this place may seem overpriced as their pour overs are between $9 - $25 which heavily differs from most other coffee shops. Having Masterpiece provide a glimpse of the specialty coffee scene within the Bay Area is still a welcome blessing as it has a similar vibe to specialty coffee shops you'd experience in Asia

Since my husband was doing an iced Shiro, I went with a hot version of the Kuro. We both got whole milk rather than oat milk. While I loved both options the Kuro was definitely my favorite and did not disappoint. There's some seating options outside to enjoy your coffee and tons of vintage items to browse through inside while you wait for your coffee.
