This setup is efficient genius, because it separates the acts of toileting and handwashing, which encourages more people to wash their hands both before and after eating, because they can do so without ever entering a room with a toilet in it. It also means no one ever has to wait for the ladies' room just to wash her hands, and there are no arguments over gender. When I worked in Downtown Berkeley, this place was technically walkable, but it was very far, so it was bad for lunch breaks. My office moved during COVID, and in the very short time I was here regularly, we came for lunch at least three times. If I had spent ten years within the new office's walking distance of Mezzo, I would weight 417 pounds now. But maybe all that extra adipose tissue wouldn't be so bad, as it would comprise mostly avocados, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, and the most delicious bread in Berkeley.
