Stupendously delicious pizza (we had the Ollie!), from crust (chewy yet tender) to toppings (harmonious fresh ingredients and seasoning) and fresh, flavorful salads (we had both the house and the apple). The night we were there, there was only one server, and we buckled in for a long wait--but were very presently surprised by his quick, courteous, patient, and friendly attention. I have always thought a pizzeria's margherita pizza to a good litmus test for whether its pizzas were any good. So when I try new pizza places, I usually try a margherita (or its equivalent) and another pizza. That's what I did at State Flour. In most cases, the margherita is better than whatever else I order, even if it is marginal. So imagine my surprise when I was incredibly underwhelmed by State Flour's margherita but incredibly impressed by its Lolo (pineapple, hot sopressata). I am usually reluctant to criticize any dish I try because, after all, taste is very subjective; what I don't like might be loved by another. However, I have to say this was possibly the most unsatisfying margherita I have ever had. I could not distinguish the tomato sauce, or the cheese, or the crust, and the entire combination came across as bitter for some reason. It was truly disappointing, especially since I had such high hopes for it. The Lolo was an entirely different story. All of the flavors were in sync. Nothing tasted out of place. I couldn't get enough of it. The tomato sauce, the cheese, the pineapple, the hot sopressata, it all worked - perfectly. I would order this pizza again without hesitation. All of this to say State Flour is a bit of an enigma (at least for me); what you expect to taste a certain way may not, but other things may be surprisingly good. So you should just go and try it out for yourself. But if you are a fan of margheritas (as I am) you may not like the margherita as much as you would like. But go and give their other pizzas a try. read more

I love this pizza a lot. My favorite is the margarita square. The Gaia is great too and their mushroom is yummy, but I love a plain pizza that is delicious. The bread is so light and airy and crispy on the square pizza. Service is fast, and they have a beautiful upstairs area to enjoy the pizza and look over the restaurant. I will drive back out sometime to enjoy more of this. read more

However, I was really pleasantly surprised at how great State Flour was. This is the kind of place that hires the neighborhood teens in the summers while still taking the time to source all fresh ingredients. Consensus for favorite was split between the mushroom-sausage and green goddess pizzas, but the margherita and hot honey pepperoni were almost as good. Apple salad gave some much needed freshness to the table. This pizza place is as perfect for a family dinner as it is for a first date, and is just as likely to have a table of college friends as it is a post-conference debrief. I have been coming to state flour for years now and I always leave happy with a full stomach. It's a small restaurant but they have a good amount of seating. Their staff is attentive and quick which I appreciate. I've mainly tried their red sauce pizzas which I think are very good. One of my favorite new places I've tried in Berkeley!! Both pizzas were great with unique toppings and a lot of flavor. Personal fav was the Darcy because the red sauce was so good with the pickled onions and cherry tomatoes. The crust was perfectly thin and crispy on both. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive and made great suggestions. The inside is small but has an upper level so it was a decent amount of seating for a college Ave restaurant. I haven't stopped thinking about that Burrata pizza! It reminded me of the pizza in Florence.The crust was perfectly baked to a crisp without being too crunchy. I came here to dine with my friends for dinner, and we were immediately greeted and seated by our server. We got to sit upstairs in this fairly small, but cozy restaurant. She was very kind and quickly got us water while taking our order. We got the Lo Lo and Burrata pizza. The Lo Lo had a kick with the pepper, but the spice paired well with the pineapple and basil. The Burrata was delicious as well---the cheese made the slice so creamy. Both pizzas had a nice, thin crust and neither were greasy or heavy! For the size, the pizzas were a bit pricey at $25ish for a 14", but I would definitely like to try the other flavors they provide. read more

Game changer. I was (1) craving a NY style pizza and (2) wanting to explore more of this Berkeley neighborhood and so found this magical place. I ordered the Chloe for take out to share with the fam at home but had tried a slice of for lunch and chose the Gaia. Such a quaint, cozy, and clean spot in Elmwood! I've walked by many a times and finally decided to stop in for lunch, and I'm so happy I did. Peak lunch time on a Tuesday and there were still many seats available on both the top and bottom floors. We ordered the Casanova pizza, which took around 20 minutes to arrive. We met the owner today and he was super nice and made us custom pizzas. They were delicious!

My friends and I were walking by and passed this place on the way to a nearby establishment we had planned to go to. However, we ended up here without knowing anything about it, lol. It was a gamble, but we all agreed that it was worth it. We walked up the counter unsure of how to order. The person there said that there is a table upstairs that could seat the three of us. They were busy, and the table wasn't cleared, but we made space and someone came up to clear it and wipe down the table. The staff are very friendly. There is a casual atmosphere and I would say things are fairly cramped. I wouldn't say it is accessible for folks with wheelchairs. AND the food is pretty delicious. My friends ordered a couple drinks and we got the Casanova and the Ollie. There were enough slices for the three of us to have four slices each and be satisfied. The Casanova is a flavor bomb while the Ollie is more subtle with good mushroom flavor. I really liked that the Ollie's crust was slightly salted. It brought good flavor to the crust. Gorgeous crispy crust on the thin crust pizza. The grandma style crust was both fluffy and crispy. I had low expectations for a slice only lunch place, but was sooo happy with the quality of pizza. Don't forget to ask for the green sauce. Creamy, bright, and garlicy. It was great on both our slices. On top of that, the staff was so helpful and happy. I was totally indecisive while choosing my slice, and the server was patient and kind. Derek, the owner, is an alum of Pizzahacker (S.F.). the pizza's here aren't replicas of his appeenticeship. they were an inspiration for him to develop his own pizza repertoire with unique flavor profiles. pizzas offered are by the pie or the piece, thin style or square. The later seemingly a take on Detroit style and the former a take on New York or Silician. (Info hinted at by press releases and notices...) menu posted on front window. during lunch, slices are on display in a plastic case, I choose the non tomato ones, paid, pizza was brought to table when reheated. Didn't get any follow ups or check-ins..skeletal crew at lunch. offerings: Lunch (slices: round slices, square slices), salad, drinks. Dinner: round Pies 14", salad, dessert eats: slices -(round pie):shroom (5.5): "leeks, garlic confit, mushrooms, nut free pesto, mozz, grana padano" -very tasty flavorful combo of flavors and textures on a toasty thin crust pizza, my preferred style. 4.5 stars. Doubt a thinner crust could support all the ingredients. -(square pie): Gaia (6.50): "Mozzarella, provolone, caulfiower, pine nuts, grana padano, aji verde sauce". -the toppings with the pine nuts, small tender pieces of cauliflower with the mix of cheeses and the citrusy aji verde sauce was unami satisfying. the thick breading isn't my preferred style though it may done perfecto. 3.5 stars take outs: -just a few tables on lst level, and some tables upstairs. -would repeat but not with the square pie thick crust pizzas, just not a fan of thick crust pizza. toppings on both were great. -undecided whether I would order any with tomato red sauces. -so many choices. Great salads, pizzas and service! The inside layout is a narrow footprint with downstairs and upstairs seating and a small kitchen where they work wonders. We ordered one of each delicious salads, three pizzas- Keiki (Cheese), Classic Pep and Gaia. For 4 adults and 2 kids, we could have used one more pizza but we probably would have had leftovers. So your order should depend on how hungry you are. The owner and staff were super nice. Wish I took pics but I was busy enjoying myself. read more

Finally got around to trying this pizza place near the corner of College and Ashby. Had a piece of the mushroom pesto and was impressed in the taste, crunch, and chewiness all at once. I'd have to say it's the best pizza I've had in Berkeley in a long time. The crust is not thin, but not thick either...more in the medium thin category. You can tell there was a lot of thought put into creating the multitextured taste. On top of that, the size of the pizza slice they give you is very generous. If the inside dining area was a terrible place to eat, I'd still be pretty happy based on the pizza alone and gladly go sit on a bench somewhere to enjoy. But the interior has beautiful natural light on the eating loft above (skylight and all), and the first floor seating area is pleasant as well. We tried the Bolognese as appetizer and had a half burrata margarita and half hunter (pepperoni with sausage) pizza. The crust was fantastic -- thin, perfectly baked and had a good consistency. My only critique is that the entire pizza, including the dough, was on the salty side. At $22-24 for a 14 inch pizza, the price is a little steep. The real star was the burrata margarita. Took my family to State Flour Pizza last night and we all *loved* it. My wife was thrilled with the pear endive salad - but of course, the star of the show was the pizzas. Great crispy crust, flavorful sauce, great cheese, good meats, what more could you ask for? Note that the "kids" pizza is actually a normal size pizza, the chef told me that they called it "kids pizza" because kids tend to prefer the distribution of cheese on it versus the sliced cheese they use on other pizzas, and in fact it was true - my daughter said she preferred it for exactly that reason. They also have a good supply of wines and beers on hand. The beers are all in cans and are a bit expensive - cans of beer go for $9 or $10 here As of this writing, State Flour Pizza is still relatively new, and they still have to work out a few kinks. For one, they need to post menus in more locations inside the restaurant; for another, they really need to fix the front door so the cold air doesn't constantly stream in. Still, I will most certainly be back for the fine pizza. read more

I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family. We got the barrata pizza and that was so delicious! We definitely want to come back and try out their other toppings.
