Finally got around to trying this pizza place near the corner of College and Ashby. Had a piece of the mushroom pesto and was impressed in the taste, crunch, and chewiness all at once. I'd have to say it's the best pizza I've had in Berkeley in a long time. The crust is not thin, but not thick either...more in the medium thin category. You can tell there was a lot of thought put into creating the multitextured taste. On top of that, the size of the pizza slice they give you is very generous. If the inside dining area was a terrible place to eat, I'd still be pretty happy based on the pizza alone and gladly go sit on a bench somewhere to enjoy. But the interior has beautiful natural light on the eating loft above (skylight and all), and the first floor seating area is pleasant as well. Took my family to State Flour Pizza last night and we all *loved* it. My wife was thrilled with the pear endive salad - but of course, the star of the show was the pizzas. Great crispy crust, flavorful sauce, great cheese, good meats, what more could you ask for? Note that the "kids" pizza is actually a normal size pizza, the chef told me that they called it "kids pizza" because kids tend to prefer the distribution of cheese on it versus the sliced cheese they use on other pizzas, and in fact it was true - my daughter said she preferred it for exactly that reason. They also have a good supply of wines and beers on hand. The beers are all in cans and are a bit expensive - cans of beer go for $9 or $10 here As of this writing, State Flour Pizza is still relatively new, and they still have to work out a few kinks. For one, they need to post menus in more locations inside the restaurant; for another, they really need to fix the front door so the cold air doesn't constantly stream in. Still, I will most certainly be back for the fine pizza. read more

This place serves up the best pizza in town. They have a New York style/ California style pizza that provides local fresh ingredients. They're sweet and small little dining spot is cool. I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family. We got the barrata pizza and that was so delicious! We definitely want to come back and try out their other toppings. We tried the Bolognese as appetizer and had a half burrata margarita and half hunter (pepperoni with sausage) pizza. The crust was fantastic -- thin, perfectly baked and had a good consistency. My only critique is that the entire pizza, including the dough, was on the salty side. At $22-24 for a 14 inch pizza, the price is a little steep. The real star was the burrata margarita. I gave my partner the choice of any pizza establishment with a 25 radius for dinner last night and after considering some top notch places she chose State Flour. Very nice selection in one of our old college neighborhoods. The place was packed when we came with folks chatting outside waiting for their pizza. We could smell the oven busily firing the pies and the noise of dinner conversations filled the air. Upon entering, we were greeted by Brian, one of the proprietors, who dropped the news that the wait would be an hour. Ticking through our option, we decided honesty in this situation was a welcomed attribute where we knew our fate upfront. Such great service is rare these days. We found out later the place just opened and a kitchen staffer called in sick. I get it in this COVID era. We ordered 2 pies, salad and bi-U-ti-ful rose. The house salad was fresh and tossed with a tangy vinaigrette and cubes of feta that was perfect for 2. Our first pie cam 46 mins after ordering (yep, I had the stopwatch going) and it was the Casanova that had slices of sausage, onions, mozzarella and Parmesan. The crust was amazingly thin, with a crisp exterior and chewy center. Toppings were artistically placed versus loaded on top. You get a great balance of sauce, crust, topping a cheese in each bite. Our second pizza was a Burrata they came with the cheese still cool in the center. I wasn't sure it this was intentional or if they just were busy, but the cheese had a much more intense creaminess and salty forward flavor than I expected. This really resonated with my Tate buds. Brian was checking back with us throughout our meal and we were so pleased with the level of service. Cheers to the new kids on the block who will be an instant classic on the block. Clean environment, honest food and great service will draw us back for the years to come. I hope it won't be such a crazy wait next time, but worth the wait in my book. read more

We came to this place with some friends, who had been here before, and what a great find this was! We had a group of right and we ordered four pizzas: the Ollie, the Hunter, the Lolo, and the Burrata. All of the pizzas were out of this world! The crust especially was terrific: light yet crispy. The toppings were all fresh and flavorful. We also ordered the state flower house salad and the endive apple salad. Both of those were fantastic as well. The owner and staff here are also especially nice. You could tell by the way they interacted with the other patrons. It felt like the people here knew that they had stumbled across a great treasure! (When we walked in there was a woman by herself who was eating the pepperoni pizza and reading a book. And that also looked terrific and the place just feels comfortable.) This is one of those places where you almost don't want to let the people know about it because you know it's going to get overcrowded, but at the same time you cannot help yourself because the food is so terrific and the owner is so nice that you want them to succeed! read more

Thats one big plus for me It's a small shop on college but the pizza is delicious. I got the Cauliflower square slice. Cauliflower was perfectly soft and the peruvian sauce that's on top is tangy and awesome. It goes well with the pizza. Pepperoni is a classic. It was more tomatoey than I expected but if that is you then go for it Corn slice is a giant slice that has corn and tomatoes. Very simple but the texture is good. Overall, good experience if you want a pretty decent pizza by the slice. I wish there were more ingredients for some like more meat pizza but for what they have it is good Service was awesome as they brought out the pizza for you and it was quick. I can't say what dining in is like. I got delivery. The pizza wasn't hot when it arrived. The sauce doesn't go even close to the edges. The toppings are scanty. It tastes ok, but it's not at all filling. It was way too expensive for what you get pizza-wise. I ordered 3 pizzas for 3 people and that was too much if you measure by the whole pizza, but if you look at just the part with sauce, cheese, & toppings, it was about right. I ordered desserts. The chocolate mousse was phenomenal. I didn't try the strawberry panna cotta but it was devoured. What you need to know, this is essential, only about 25% of the menu can be ordered for delivery. There were specialty pizzas that looked really interesting on the website and I would definitely have ordered something more novel than Margherita if it had been available. There is a pizza renaissance going on in the east bay right now and I'm glad to be a part of it. The dough is light, with a slightly crispy bottom and chewy interior. The toppings were sparse, but flavorful. I did see some other pizzas come out that seemed to have more robust toppings which I'd like to try.
