While many of the bakeries on College Ave. have lines out the door on any given morning, those who are in-the-know start to line up at Nabolom before 11:30 AM as the bakery gets ready to serve its artisanal pizza-of-the day. I made the ~20 minute trek from the Rockridge Bart station and arrived a little after 11:30. While there was already a line out the door, the efficient ordering system kept it moving quickly. Since the bakery is a grab-and-go operation, the storefront features a display case so customers can see what's available for the day and place their order when they reach the front of the line. The pastry offerings were limited, but I was there for the pizza - the flavor posted for the day was a roasted tomato, broccolini, red onion, and feta/mozzarella combo. When it was my turn to order, I was handed a slice of pizza that was fresh from the oven and piping hot. I was surprised that the generous slice cost around $6. (note: they only accept cash if your order is less than $10). As soon as I paid, I pulled over on the sidewalk near the bakery to enjoy my pizza slice. When I unwrapped the foil, I was delighted to find a "bonus" mini slice stacked on top of the larger slice. In addition to tasting incredibly fresh, the blend of cheeses with roasted seasonal vegetables was hearty and excellent. The broccolini was a unique topping that gave the pizza a peppery, horseradish flavor, and the thin crust was chewy with crispy edges. I seriously love the concept of this place and was glad that a friend suggested it for a pre-holiday foodie crawl. We lined up about 15 minutes after they started serving pizza at 11:30 AM on Saturday and didn't have to wait long to place our orders. I got a slice of the daily special pizza (a farm-to-table style vegetarian pizza) and a pistachio snail pastry. This place is takeout only, so we stood outside after ordering to devour the straight-from-the-oven hot pizza. My first impression of the pizza was that it's very artisanal. The vegetables tasted like they were picked fresh the same day, and the crust tasted like it was from flour that was just milled. Very few places offer up an experience this close to the source. While commuting back home, I enjoyed the pistachio spiral pastry while waiting for the train to come. It was equally as good, and the prices at Nabolom can't be beat. My pastry was less than $6, and the pizza was priced similarly, which feels like a steal in the Bay Area. I got the cinnamon twist and the tomato focaccia. The cinnamon twist was super flaky and crunchy and had a nice cinnamon flavor without being too overpowering. The tomato focaccia was very tasty, even though I ate it over 7 hours after I bought it. It sort of tasted like a pizza without cheese, and I loved the crunch of the bread and the herbs. It was a bit oily, but I would definitely come back and order these items or try something new! read more

Unique bakery and pizza spot but odd hours and sells out quickly. Prices are similar to Tartine - which is at the high end. I really love this bakery and the vibe and its the perfect place to hang out on a Friday night. This is a unique spot. Offerings are unique - and what I liked most was when I walked through the door I was in a bakery - not some Instagram Tic tok space - that is all too common these days. Things were designed as a place to bake goods and function rather than what might look good on some three second video. If your late expect pizza to be sold out. That alone isn't a problem - it just shows the popularity of the place. I didn't get to try it but I think its probably one of the highlights of the place and people always compare it to Cheeseboard - so that says a lot. Had the focaccia - and wasn't overly impressed with it. I'm honestly not even sure what it is and I looked up that word 'focaccia' already once or twice in a dictionary. I suppose its similar to pizza but just doesn't qualify on some sort of technicality. It's closer to flavored bread than it is pizza. Other items I had were the twice baked cardamom knot and the Bostock. The knot was very dry and I wasn't a fan. It was 'twice baked' so I should have expected something like that. The Bostock was a 10/10. It was a unique croissant loaf if I understand correctly. It had lots of almond flavor and wasn't at all dry. Overall, come for perfect ambiance and know the hours before you come. Desserts can be hit or miss. read more

It's more of a 4.5 in my mind. We ordered twice baked cardamom bun and black sesame croissant, and were not disappointed. You might think I'm crazy to say this but i think they are too generous about adding the fillings (which I appreciate) but ended up making the pastry less flaky because of the oil and sugar in the fillings. I honestly would spend the same amount of money (very reasonable priced) but cut the fillings to 2/3, so the pastry will be smaller but the dough will retains the layers and the texture will be better. I've been wanting to try this place since it was featured on a lot of bakery lists. But I was heavily disappointed. They have a nice display outside showcasing their selections. But I didn't know you had to memorize said display once you got inside the bakery. There was no list of items at the register and there wasn't a lot of baked goods to visibly reference. We got the pistachio snail, the chocolate chip cookie, the strawberry scone and the twice baked cardamom bun. The pistachio snail was pretty good and it had a nice flake. However it was on the oilier side and the bag was soaked after 10 minutes. The chocolate chip was just a basic cookie nothing special. The strawberry scone tasted like cheese? Not very strawberry forward tasting. Not sure why the cardamom bun had to be baked twice. It was on the burnt side and there was a weird sugar on top. Very quaint space for customers to walk in. It seems like you had to be a regular to order the things you wanted. I think they offered other items/baked good but they either weren't ready or you had to know about it. Came here to try the pizza! I've always walked by but finally decided to give it a try. The inside is pretty small and you order at a counter and your food is handed to you at a different door they have outside. I ordered one slice and they were pretty quick with it. The flavor that day was a mushroom pizza with corn and kale. The crust was a little thicker than I like for sauce less pizza's, but it was very soft and was balanced out by the amount of cheese and toppings. The toppings were also flavorful! My only complaint is that they were slightly burnt. They gave me a sauce on the side which complimented the pizza nicely. It was pretty spicy, but had great flavor! read more

Came here on a Saturday morning. There was a line but it moves fast. So many good looking pastries to choose from. I only got the lemon twist because I was having lunch later but if I wasn't I definitely would have ordered more. The lemon twist was really good, nice texture and not overly sweet. I've been going to Nabolom off and on since I was a grad student in the 70s. It used to be a chill place to get coffee and a pastry for breakfast, but... Lately, I don't come here often, maybe once a year. And this is the 2nd time in a row that going there was a negative experience. About 1/2 a minute after parking and getting in line, one of the staff walked up behind me and told me I HAD to move my car. It was in the boss's parking space. The boss was not there. And the parking space had NO indication on it that it was reserved for some Grand High Pooh-Bah. So...WTF? I could have finished my transaction there in about another 30 seconds, but they wanted me to move it NOW. [After all, the boss might actually appear in the next few seconds. Who knows? And, my god, he/she/it wouldn't want to wait THAT LONG for his/her/its designated parking space!] So, I dutifully moved my car... down College to pick up coffee and a pastry at Starter. The folks there are a solemn lot, but they aren't rude. I'm taking all my future business there in the future. read more

You HAVE to get there early but besides that the selection is unique and yummy. Everything is freshly baked, I used to walk there in the morning when I lived nearby. Cute artsy bakery with a nice wall to sit next to. Lots of people order their lunch pizza that they only sell one version a day. You wouldn't expect them to sell you pizza as its only advertised on a paper sign on their window. Unfortunately you have to wait a while for the pizza but you can place an order and just stroll the stores down the street. Two things I love: Trying new bakeries and feeding my nephews to plump them up..... and eat them. When visiting my sister and nephews, I like sharing the love and bringing treats. I arrived early enough where the almond croissant was fresh out of the oven with its sweet center still hot and oozy-- kudos to the staff for letting me know. The morning bun is probably one of the best I've had so far. The outside its flaky and crusty and the inside was nice and soft. Im a crust person so immediately I was drawn to the pecan tart which is 95% tart... jk its not but let me tell you, they don't skimp on the crust. The pecan filling wasn't too sticky or pecany. Stop your second-guessing and go, now! I have never in my 62 years of life had a croissant as good as the ones you will find at NABLOM. Every Saturday, my husband and I treat ourselves; the calories are worth it. Don't even think twice. The tiny storefront is a gem you could easily walk by. It is so European, with no gauche signage (is there a sign?) Small cafe tables dot the sidewalk. We were told that the croissants are made with a sourdough starter (as croissants are made in France), "They are a labor of love; if you try to make a profit, you're f*$ked." I used to come here all the time before the lockdown. Now not so much. Things have changed. Decent coffee but their pastries are inconsistent. Some days the pastries are delicious and some days their pastries are just okay. Once in a while the pastries taste like they are 1 or 2-days old. Not flaky and light but semi-hard and stale. I came to this bakery more than a year ago by chance and I didn't remember the name or where exactly it was located. I know (eye roll) my mom and I happened to be driving by that morning and she stopped at a business close by and I saw this bakery and went and got something. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I came here early on a Saturday morning by chance again because the kids and I were looking for a bakery in the Albany/Berkeley area and came upon this one. The lady (who I suppose is the owner) was so very sweet. She gave my kids free meringue for them to try, which I thought was such a sweet gesture. We ordered a variety of baked goods, both sweet and savory. The cheese twist bread was delicious. It had so much flavor when warmed up at home. The kids enjoyed their pastries. They got the cinnamon twist and the chocolate croissant. My mom enjoyed the regular butter croissant and her scone. I was a big fan of that cheese twist bread. I also had the savory bread pudding... It was just okay, I wasn't really a big fan of it. I don't know, I just had a higher expectation for it because of how delicious it looked but my expectations were not met. Customer service: 5/5 stars The owner was so warm and welcoming. I love businesses that are welcoming to their customers. It makes such a huge difference. Parking: Street parking available. Might have to pay because of parking meters. Baked goods: 4/5 stars... Despite me not being a fan of the savory bread pudding, my family and I enjoyed the other baked goods. Overall: I would give Nabolom a 4/5 stars. I'm so happy that I was able to find this bakery again. I will definitely be back in the future. Early for my manicure and stopped nearby for a snack. This co-op bakery has been around for years, yet I've only been there maybe one other time for a slice of pizza. I recall it wasn't for me. So I tried the Savory Twist. Gruyere cheese twisted with a flaky pastry and doused with seeds. Not sure what kind of seeds or seasoning, but it was good. The pastries at Nabolom are absolutely divine! They're selling two new twists - one savory and one sweet. I've tried both, and they converted me to a Nabolom superfan. The savory twist has caramelized onion and gruyere cheese, and is absolutely packed with flavor. My friend tried a bite and dubbed the twist a "flavor bomb." The sweet rye twist has Nutella and hazelnuts. Both have the most incredibly flaky layers! Wow!! Nabolom is my favorite bakery in the area and will be a go-to for me from now on. Seating is outdoors only during covid. They have a $10 minimum for card purchases, so bring cash or plan to purchase multiple items. They are open in the mornings and early afternoons. This place, tucked in a corner of a busy cute neighborhood in Berkeley, is a bakery full of great breads, sweets, and of course delicious pain au chocolate and croissants. The croissants are flakey, buttery, and reheat in the toaster oven really well. Service is top notch, there isn't really a lone line unlike some other bakeries in SF. Parking is usually ample with either neighborhood parking (free) or street parking. Ambiance is quite nice, as it looks like a traditional Boulangerie inspired place with breads and pastries proudly displayed and featured . I would recommend that you give them a call beforehand to check if your pastry is in stock to avoid disappointment. Sometimes they sell out but a call will save you a trip! read more

Considering this didn't even make the first page of Yelp search results for "pizza" in Berkeley, Nabolom is probably the best kept secret I've had in recent years. I'm also tempted to not post this review because it would pain me to see the hungry hordes descend but the pizza here is just too good to not share and spread the wealth. Having been a diehard Cheeseboard fan for years and years (I will at least try anything they put on a pie, no matter how weird it sounds, because somehow they almost always make it work!), I knew I had to try this place when a friend who feels similarly said that Nabolom had toppled Cheeseboard for the coveted crown of best pizza. After trying a half baked pie of roasted tomato, goat cheese, and fresh herbs, I had to agree that it was amazing and definitely a contender. Even my husband who usually finds goat cheese to be gamey liked it because it was that good! Their crust is crispier than Cheeseboard, which has more of a chew to it. It's hard for me to honestly say which place I prefer as I'm sure it has a lot to do with the toppings. Both places make amazing crusts, which is the essential starting point to a good pie. From there, it might come down to personal preference and what toppings you happened to try when you visited. I liked both places better than Sliver (another popular spot started by ex-Cheeseboard folks). The thing is, our friend told us he personally thinks the pizza is better in person because Nabolom's super hot oven gives the pizza a nice char that he said takes it to the next level. I tried the pizza here after hearing some good reviews about it, but honestly didn't think it was anything too special. Especially comparing it to Sliver and Cheeseboard, I didn't think the texture or flavor was as good as those. The pizza of the day had onions and goat cheese on it (which I'm personally not a big fan of so that could be another reason), and while it was thin and crisp, I felt that it was lacking a bit. The crust got quite tough and hard to chew once the slice started cooling down, but I did enjoy the caramelized cheese on top. They also give the little sliver with your slice.
