My four year-old didn't like all the mixings on top, so we let him try just the booza and he liked it! He even carried it all the way home and tried to put it in the freezer for later. They cover all the bases from that get your day started cup of coffee or afternoon pick me up cup, along with freshly baked pastries, to menu items for lunch or dinner, to freshly made gelato. Though I didn't visit for coffee, the sole purpose of every other customer that came through while I visited, was for that cup of joe alone, which leads me to believe it's some goood coffee, because there was a continuous stream of customers coming for their caffeinated fix. I on the other hand was in need of vittels and decided on the namesake sandwich, which was full of quality ingredients and large enough for my daughter and I to share, along with a spinach and onion pastry. The set-up has space where you can dine in or complete an assignment with an approaching deadline in peace. R&T offers pub-height seating as well as standard. Like most people, we were lured here by the Instagram photos! After making a pit stop at cheeseboard, we walked over to Roast and Toast and ordered the booza. There was a small wait and when we got up the cashier, he walked over to make our booza in front of us. He carefully crafted this small cup of "ice cream". He was very kind and offered us samples of the base booza. We opted for the original flavor and to pile the floral flavors on top. True to every social media post, the finished product was very beautiful. If you're into floral flavors, you'll really enjoy this. For those who think rose tastes like soap, I would recommend passing. Overall, I thought it tasted great! I was noticing how popular this corner spot has been since they opened at the beginning of the year. I was tempted to try it, but I noticed their menu didn't feature entree salads and thought I should wait until I could afford the carbs. Then I read the recent articles about their booza, a uniquely stretchy Arabic ice cream which apparently they alone serve in the Bay Area. I've had booza before in Jordan of all places, so that didn't quite motivate me. No, I decided my gullet was ready for carbs. It was the right timing because Jamie W and I just finished our gym workout. Yes, I've been to the gym AND Jordan. As usual, the cafe was full of customers, and we discovered it's run by two enterprising young guys from Palestine. Ah, no wonder they know their booza. The Middle Eastern vibe extended to the forest green walls, the big stacks of Jerusalem sesame bread on the counter (Photo 5), and some of the appetizing ingredients in their sandwiches and desserts. We were able to secure a sidewalk table and started with a couple of refreshing $5.50 Iced Lattes as we waited for our order (Photo 10). Jamie went for the $16 Power Sandwich, an abundant creation made with smoked turkey, Swiss cheese, fresh avocado, lettuce, red onion, tomato, pesto, garlic sauce, and mayo on a soft focaccia roll (Photo 9). It gratefully came with a side of mixed greens instead of chips or fries. I ordered the $15 Garden Delight, which was indeed a veggie version of a similarly filling sandwich. It contained avocado, sprouts, sun-dried tomatoes, provolone cheese, garlic sauce, and pesto (Photo 7). Really quite delicious and not because I took a much-needed break from bread. Jamie and I agreed the bread was the standout item, and I read it's sourced from Boudin Bakery. Each of us only had capacity for half a sandwich, so we had lunch for the next day. I know we have to keep up with our gym routine to justify the calories, but hey, we both feel like it's worth it. The affogato here was absolutely experiential! If there's an affogato on the menu I'm looking at, it's getting ordered. They have a wide assortment of gelato to choose from. They were nice enough to let me sample and the pistachio and it's perfectly nutty, warm, and just sweet enough. I'm usually used to ice cream and espresso. Obviously, that's not good enough for Roast and Toast. Their beautiful ceramic cup is coated with Nutella and pistachios on the inside. Then comes the creamy gelato and finally the espresso. My husband and I enjoyed it in their outside seating area and could not stop saying how delightful it was. Perfect for a mid afternoon sweet treat. It was busy with a neighborhood vibes. The service is friendly and I could tell they enjoy making coffee and food. The drinks don't come out as fast as chain coffee shops but it's timely enough. Came here to try their stretchy booza ice cream after I saw it featured in a couple different places. Unfortunately after trying some samples, I realized it wasn't for me and I got a Dubai strawberry cup instead. I dropped by Sunday afternoon around 4 pm and it was hopping. Most tables inside and outside were occupied. They had a large selection of baked goods on display which looked really good, but I was full from lunch, so I went straight to the booza stand. They had two flavors available that day: the original and rose. I tried samples of both, but unfortunately there was an odd taste in both that I didn't like, so I didn't buy a cup. Also, I tasted strong hints of cardamom in the the rose booza, and I don't like it that much. I was pretty disappointed as I've had my eye on Roast & Toast for their booza for a while. Instead, I ended up ordering a Dubai strawberry cup for $12. The cup comes with a generous amount of fresh sliced strawberries with Nutella, pistachio cream, chopped pistachio, and shredded knafeh. The stretchy, elastic qualify of the booza ice cream comes from the same ingredient used in some chewing gum and taffy: mastic, a resin from the mastic tree. Fun service - the ice cream is served at a cute food stand on the left of the cafe upon entry. You can choose and try 4 flavors of ice cream - I tried the original, caramel, and rose ice cream and ordered the caramel one with all toppings ($8). The caramel one had really good flavour, like honey, not too strong on caramel, and was very creamy. The toppings were really crunchy. (I have been looking for years and haven't found any others.) There were several flavors including chai, cardamom, and original booza. The person helping me offered samples and told me about how they make the ice cream in house and are continuously working on their recipe. Came here on a Tuesday for lunch at 1 and loved the experience. I got the Tuscan Chicken and tried the chicken supreme sandwich and nutella pistachio croissant. The tuscan tasted super Italian with the spices on the chicken, pesto, vinaigrette, and mozzarella so nothing special but it tasted way better than the chicken supreme (it didn't have any flavor and the flavors didn't blend well when most of the ingredients were raw). The croissant was very crispy and sweet, pretty good but $8 is a little steep. My sandwich was $18, which I think was absolutely not worth the price partly because I got the sourdough and since my friend got the dutch crunch, she was able to split her sandwich into two meals and it was much more worth it for her. Stopped by for a bite and decided on a chai latte with almond milk and avocado toast with sundried tomato and egg. It was honestly the perfect combo. The chai latte was warm, creamy, and perfectly spiced--just the right balance of sweetness with that comforting cinnamon and cardamom flavor. It tasted fresh and not overly sugary like some places make it. The avocado toast was just as good. The bread was nicely toasted and sturdy, topped with fresh, creamy avocado that was perfectly seasoned with pesto. Simple, fresh, and really satisfying. Our experience at roast and toast Cafe was just okay. We came on a weekend so it was very busy. In my opinion, that's a great thing and I try not to get discouraged by crowds because if there are a lot of people that typically means that a lot of people enjoy it. Unfortunately, the lack of organization exacerbated the chaos. Just ordering was a challenge. Thet offer a paper menu, but it has no pictures accompanying the item names. There was only one kiosk for all the customers and the person in front of us was very slow. Also, not everything they offer was in the kiosk and not everything had pictures. The photos they did have were misrepresented as well because the picture of the Pistachio Nutella pastry that we purchased was much different on the kiosk than what we we're presented with. You have to order the food separately from where you order the ice cream so you had to stand in line again. We ordered our food first and then got in the ice cream line. We did receive our ice cream right away , but I had eaten the whole ice cream well before our food was even ready. It was a long wait for food, like really long, but they did apologize for the wait when I picked up the food. I thought the ice cream was good but the toppings are really what makes it tasty and add texture. So I really only enjoyed the top part of the ice cream. We got the rose cardamom ice cream, not the plain ice cream and I would give the ice cream with the topping four stars. The Zaatar & Cheese croissant was so salty we couldn't eat it. We took two bites because I honestly thought it was possible that someone had tried salting it but the lid came off and poured the salt out in one spot or something. The Pistachio Nutella croissant was overly sweet and yet also dry but the Turkey croissant was light and fresh and delicious. I would definitely get that one again. Parking was difficult. We had to park a few blocks away in a residential area and walk but they have outdoor seating and a restroom inside for customer use. I saw an Instagram post about Roast & Toast's Arabic Booza Ice Cream, heard the word Mastic and I was in! Walking in I checked out their tablet, but it didn't list their ice cream so I waited for the cashier to point me over to their entire Booza section, where the ice cream is whipped before your eyes. I got a two scoop cup (it was so large) of the Arabic Booza with phyllo dough, rose petals, and pistachio nut toppings and it was absolutely amazing - chefs kiss. You can really taste the mastic and it made me miss Chios something fierce. The service was incredibly friendly and helpful and the Barista said interest in their Booza ice cream has skyrocketed since the recent SF Chronicle article. At the end of the day, you should come down and try Roast & Toast Cafe's Arabic Booza ice cream, it's fantastic, so unique, and absolutely not to be missed! read more
