    Meatball sandwich
    Daniela J.

So far have only tried sandwiches via takeout but they are delicious. We recently had the meatballs and the spicy hog sandwiches. Both are very large. The spicy hog had the perfect amount of spice for me, super flavorful. Definitely need to come back and try more things!

Definitely all about the sandwiches! My wife loved her BLAT. Getting the Niman ranch "balls" next time for sure. The poached egg + bacon salad needed about 3x the goodies but was still tasty and a good healthier option. Loved watching the chefs take care of everything they were preparing!

The service here was amazing! Shout out to the servers. So I had the poached egg salad and carrot soup. The salad was fresh and the Truffle dressing really matched well with the salad. The ginger carrot soup had very light ginger, so it wasn't overpowering. My meal was amazing. My coworker had the pastrami hash. She found it to be fatty and didn't really like it. She was also shocked at the $15 mimosa charge. Seems we had two different experiences because I genuinely liked my food, and she wasn't thrilled about her food. Personally, I would definitely return to try their other dishes.

Glorious little place on the way to visit the Cal camous. We walked in to a genuinely pleasant fellow and a fantastic space. We placed our irder at the front and took our spots at a tiny table. The guy, wishing I'd gotten his name, brought us waters immediately and our drinks shortly thereafter. The green jasmine tea was out of this world! It was the most jasmine-y jasmine I've had. I could rave about the tea for days...it was that good. I was treated to a cup to take with and savor as long as I could make it last. The sandwiches were really tasty. Cuban was hot of the grill, cheese meltwd and gooey, house made pickles were tangy with a good crunch. There was a hefty serving of thinly sliced pork wedged between the bread. Each bite was just bursting with the yum factor you need in a good sandwich. The BBQ pork was also terrific - kiddo ordered without slaw or aioli so I didn't get the full experience. What I did taste was very tasty. The pickled jalapeños were soooo good, the pork tender and savory. Worth the stop!

I love a good hearty meatball so when I saw Southie serving their famous "The Balls" sandwich, try saying that without giggling... "I'll have an order of the balls!", I knew I had to make a visit. The Balls - Large and in charge. I'm glad I brought this home to eat cuz my tiny hands were not able to hold this massive sandwich and eating is was definitely a challenge. Got me looking like a troubled toddler refusing her dinner. Meatballs flying everywhere, sauce splattered on the walls, crying kid *raises hand*. Anyway, by the time I got home, the bread was somewhat soggy probably from all the steam, making it useless as a base. I ate it deconstructed style so basically just had 3 giant meatballs for lunch. Overall, kinda pricey for 3 giants meatballs and chips. Glad a crossed it off my list but I will be sticking with other balls.

Absolute amazing experience here! Came for a friend's birthday dinner and the server went above and beyond! We ordered a bottle of Prosecco and although we had finished our bottle, he came around several times to pour some extra for us and eventually even came by with champagne! He was super friendly and welcoming. Really made the experience. Food here is also awesome! We got the brussel sprouts to share--very well cooked and not bitter at all. We also shared the shrimp ceviche--this was okay, nothing special to note. But the star of the show was the steak I got. It was hearty and delicious. I loved that it came with a spicy mix of chilis on top--it really pulled it together. Only downside it was slightly too chewy, but flavor was on point. In terms of seating, it seems to be limited so just FYI. 4.5/5 stars. Would come again!

Went here on Fluke and we absolutely had a BALL!!! One of my NEW FAVORITE PLACES TO GO NOW!!! - we were greeted immediately when walking in very very nice calm and cool atmosphere and everyone seemed to be locals- although we weren't we were still greeted as one!!! Javier was one to help us and he is just AMAZING - he has vibe!!!! I love you Javier!!! FOOD WAS AMAZING - we ordered the poached eggs and hash, and also the French toast with eggs and bacon!!! We loved everything and we left no crumbs on our plates. We also had drinks ; Pinot Blanche and the Cava Conca Del Rui Anoia Brut Rose - our favorite was the Rose and we are a little tipsy!!!! I had an amazing time and also went on our very FIRST DATE here so this place will forever have my heart!!! THANK YOU JAVIER!!! You will see us soon!

We happened into this little spot while seeking breakfast on a Sunday in the college ave area of Oakland. I was first attracted to the sound of salsa music pouring out the front door of this little spot. The menu seemed mall and limited but full of quality choices. After getting a glimpse of what I saw coming out from the small open air kitchen., I knew I would have to try the food. We ended up ordering the pastrami, poached, egg, hash, and the chicken mole enchiladas. Both were amazing. I also tried a half poached egg and bacon salad and was also very impressed. each poached egg was cooked perfectly. If you want to be impressed by the quality of food coming from a tiny but skilled kitchen, give Southie a try. Oh and.... The service was amazing.

    Ahi tuna sandwich
    Cindy C.

This is a local favorite. The sandwiches we had here were just amazing. We tried the ahi tuna, meatball and Cuban. All three were really yummy. The ahi tuna had slight fish taste/smell , but it was still delicious. My favorite was the meatball sandwich, very moist and flavorful meatballs. The bread was so fresh too. It's very small shop so takeout worked out perfectly for us. Service was fast and friendly. Parking was bit tricky as we had to look for street parking. Enjoy! Recommend!!

Everything I tried so far on their dinner menu has been delicious and made with good ingredients. The chef, Javier created a menu with dishes that all seem to have a good flavor profile and harmonious mix. After speaking to the waitress, I discovered this restaurant is a sister restaurant to Wood Tavern (another fantastic restaurant), or at least currently owned by the same person. What I ordered: the liver pate crostini, the grilled persimmon and buratta crostini, and the seared ahi tuna salad. Liver pate had a mousse pate texture and the brandied cherries on top rounded out the flavor and texture nicely. The grilled persimmon and burrata cheese crostini was delicious! It also included chiffonade basil slivers, chopped pistachio nuts, pomegranate seeds, and frise salad on top - which gave it a really fantastic mix of flavors and textures in every bite. The seared ahi tuna salad was also exceptionally good, with multilayered flavors mixed together in a very complimentary way. It had grilled fennel, thin slices of garlic cloves, avocado, corn, green beans, pickled sweet peppers, perfectly seared ahi tuna slices on a bed of mixed greens - all tossed in a savory calabrian chile vinaigrette. Prices are on par with the type of venue this is for the dishes they serve, and the portion sizes are robust. Wish I had room for more, to try some other menu items! Will definitely be back the next time I am in the neighborhood.

Southie Meatball Sandwich with Kettle Chips

Came on a busy Saturday lunch, took a corner seat at the bar closest to the cashier and ordered an iconic meatball sandwich. The place was abuzz with warm conversation between patrons of all walks. Chef Max should be proud; his family recipie is faithfully executed by management team Jose and owner Rich, and continues to feed countless satisfied customers--myself included. I asked for an extra side of marinade so I could enjoy the saucy goodness in every bite, but the meatballs stand on their own as juicy, perfectly-seasoned marvels. Even the bread was satisfying. As a sandwich lover, this was a home run. Great, authentic flavors of home for a reasonable price. A good eat for lunch, and I hear the breakfast burrito is an excellent choice for breakfast. Staff was friendly, accessible and caring. Look forward to returning again.

    Flat iron steak

I came here for dinner with my boyfriend on a Saturday evening ~6:30PM and we were seated right away. I've always walked by this place and today we gave it a try! The inside is a bit small with some bar and table seating available. Most of the tables are 2 seaters. From almost every seat in the restaurant you can see the chefs making the food and I really enjoyed that. The service throughout was very friendly and attentive. To start, we had the rock cod ceviche. The ceviche is served on top of a tostada and in one order there are 2 tostadas. Overall, I thought that the rock cod was a bit chewy but it tasted good. The taste of the fish was balanced out by the freshness of the vegetables. For my entree I had the flat iron steak. The steak itself was cooked very well and I enjoyed the chimichurri sauce with it. However, that is where my praise for the dish ends. I was left confused by the rest of the dish because of the excessive amount of oil on the plate. There was olive oil on the arugula salad, the potatoes were tossed with some butter sauce, and the cauliflower puree was swimming in oil. The food looked like an island surrounded by oil. The texture of the cauliflower puree was good but the taste of it couldn't really shine because of the oil. My boyfriend had the balls and polenta. I tried his entree and I liked how the meatballs tasted. They were moist and went well with the sauce. The polenta was standard polenta, nothing to phone home about. For dessert, we shared a plum ricotta cake. The plum flavor didn't come through as much as I would've liked. The ricotta topping with the crumble was good. The cake itself was a little dry. Overall, the service was very nice and the food was ok. There were some elements of each dish that were good but as a whole each dish fell a little flat.

    Spicy Hog

Definitely one of the more gourmet sandwich options available in Oakland (price point reflects that), but Southie's food meets these lofty expectations. With a beautiful bay window open to the street and ample tables reaching into the back of the restaurant, Southie is a wonderfully inviting spot with a seasonally rotating menu. We ordered our two sandwiches to go and waited around 20 minutes for our food. Spicy Hog - pork was juicy and flavorful with a spice level that was just tolerable (we had no water in the car) and finished well with the lime aioli. Fennel Seared Ahi Tuna Banh Mi - originally had my doubts because I am sort of a banh mi purist, but the server convinced me to try it out. I've never been much of a hard boiled egg guy mostly because of the dry and pasty feeling of the yolks, but this sandwich changed my mind. The sauce melded the taste and texture of the tuna and egg together in a way I don't think I ever considered possible, creating this unbelievably umami profile that avoided the typical soy sauce-associated mistake of being far too salty. Paired the freshness from the vegetables, Southie's ahi banh mi just might have entered my sandwich HOF. Definitely make the trip!

Salade aux lardons. Incroyable, mais vrai le meilleur de ma vie, y compris mes années en France et à Paris, surtout. Merci. Richard Wood

The wait between meals like appetizer and main course was so long not because of kitchen but the server was just gone for long at a stretch. I had to ask him to come and same with after our meal was finished he never came to ask if we needed dessert, The waiter on other table saw us a few times and he finally came and gave us a menu. I really wanted to try a dessert but was scared this will again take us another hour to even get the server to come and get our order. On top of really slow service there was an older man who sat in the table next to us and kept talking to us looking at our food. He literally was asking me if you support trump do you like him. He kept telling us how he knew the owner and his wife and has come to this place for 100 times over years and everything is free for him here. This was all ok but I wasn't sure why he wasn't letting us eat our meal in peace. At some point he became a little racist as well, when we tried to take our food goto he told us i won't take this goto. I never take this goto. And then was like ohh you are from India and it felt so uncomfortable. He was like do you watch fox, I watch fox. Then was like I have cable, I don't try to save money. I understand this restaurant might have some old and familiar guest or important people come to this place but they should understand other guest should still be able to enjoy there meal without being bothered by the people who are known. It was one of my worse restaurant experiences, the service and on top of this man who somehow is VIP guest at this place made it so hard for us to have our date night meal in peace. I literally tried to run away from this place. This was almost 2 hrs long ordeal. We came a little before 6 and left at 8 and I never eat for that long. I'll NEVER go to this place again even though I loved the food.

A search on this website resulted in Marica having it on their menu. He booked a 7:30 PM reservation for two. We arrived early. What started out as a not too pleasant experience for us was the attitude of the guy who greeted us when we entered the restaurant. Attitude bordered on rudeness (3 star). We somewhat tolerated it, not knowing what to expect next. The restaurant was filled with diners, and the only available seating was not far from the front door. Oh, the chill was in the air, and my not wearing a sweater and/or light jacket to stay warm had me shivering. I had to brave the element (LOL). Since there was no Chilean sea bass on their daily special menu, it took a little longer for my companion and I to peruse the menu, and decide what entrees we were willing to have. Usually I would order an Arnold Palmer as a beverage; however, this time I decided to be adventurous - reisling peach spritz please - to whet my appetite. My date had the Temescal pilsner. Eats: Grilled salmon arange ginger saffron blanc beurre, roasted potatoes and vegetables. Korean short ribs, honey garlic gochujang marinade, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Our meals were on point and bomb-diggity delicious. The arange ginger saffron was perfect with the carrot. It reminded me of glazed carrots. The green beans were fresh and not overcooked. Ooh, the Korean pork ribs were tender and that sauce was sweet and had a subtle kick of spiciness. (Definitely a perfect complement for the pork ribs.) I have to admit the chef knew how to burn. Food tasted so good that figuratively speaking y'all gotta slap the cook and his mama. Ambiance: Comfy and casual. Despite the dining area is small, still it is a great restaurant for dining on a Friday evening. From my perspective and vivid imagination with the indoor lighting, it exuded a romantic atmosphere. Only in my mind I can hear soft jazz in the background. What convinced me to give Marica a 5 star rating? It was none other than Enriqueta, our waitress. She was pleasant, attentive and so accommodating. The chef lost our order ticket; thus, the wait time for our meal took a bit longer than we anticipated. She came to the rescue and comped us with dessert - chocolate souffle with homemade vanilla ice cream. It certainly was a gesture of kindness to have my date and me smiling from ear to ear. Return visit? Yes, mos def...not the rapper for Chilean sea bass. Enriqueta said I can always call to find out what their daily special is.

Our total for 2 entrees and 2 drinks was $60 before tip. We ordered two drinks (orange juice and an iced mocha) which were provided promptly. The orange juice was a little too sour and my mom had to add some sugar to improve the taste. The iced mocha was good, not too sweet. One thing to note the wait for our food took much longer than expected, and it may have been due to how busy it was. My mom opted to order the salmon yuzu benedict and I got an egg plate (scrambled eggs) with a side green salad. My mom mentioned the potatoes lacking salt but she enjoyed the salmon benedict. I thought the scrambled eggs were good, but slightly bland & needed salt and pepper. The side green salad was alright, but the vinaigrette had a bitter aftertaste. Overall, the meal was pretty good and timing wasn't the best. I'd likely return for brunch on a non-peak day. Definitely recommend joining the yelp waitlist prior to arriving if you can!

I loved the different vegetables in it besides being just potatoes and onions. The mushrooms and root vegetables worked really well together. Everything was well-seasoned. I'm glad we ended up choosing these dishes even though neither were my original top choices (I decided on the menu with my friend). It made me feel like you can choose anything and it'd be a banger. We were quite full from these dishes, and we forget we also ordered beignets to come out last. They were fluffy and mostly air (but not in a bad way). The service throughout the meal was good. We were checked on from time-to-time and our waters were refilled, although I wish the water glasses were a little bigger. One small thing to note was that we were given the check while we were still eating, even though the restaurant was still seating people despite it being close to closing time. Unsure if/why we were rushed like this. Overall, this was a memorable brunch spots I've been to in the Bay (dare I say one of the best?). We left smelling like a campfire. I would recommend it.

Given that we used to live a block and a half away, the Wolf became more than just a "sometimes"…read morerestaurant; it became our "Cheers." It's our first instinct for a bad day, a celebration day, an outing with friends, showing visitors our neighborhood, and saying hi to our favorite waiter. My last review of the Wolf was written a handful of years ago, during the vegetarian decades of my life. In the years since, I've expanded my diet and tried many, many more of their excellent dishes (even when our entire party orders a steak). Thank you, Wolf staff, for always making our neighborhood night out memorable.

I came to The Wolf with a group of eight for a celebration dinner on a Friday night, and overall it…read morewas a really enjoyable night. We had reservations, but I arrived a little early so I grabbed a seat at the bar while waiting for the rest of my party. The bar area has a great vibe--lively and energetic--and it's a good option if you can snag a seat and don't have a reservation or want something a little more relaxed. The guy sitting next to me already had a drink, so I asked him what he was having. He told me it was the Kia Ora, a tequila-based cocktail, and said it was really good. It also happened to be the bartender's favorite, so it was getting great reviews all around. I decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did--it was delicious. Not too sweet and really refreshing. The Wolf was definitely busy that night, so I was glad we had made a reservation, especially for a group our size. Once everyone arrived, we were seated at a big round table, which made it nice and easy to talk with everyone. I ordered another drink with dinner, this time the Amante, which is mezcal-based and supposed to have a spicy kick. It was also very good, though I personally didn't taste much of the spice. The service was good and everyone was friendly, though I do wish things had moved a little faster. I know that with a group of eight it can take some time, but we didn't get our food until around 9:15--about 45 minutes after we ordered--and by that point I was definitely hungry. When the food did arrive, it was worth the wait. I ordered the hamburger, which was excellent, and the fries were crispy and perfectly fried. Everyone else in the group seemed really happy with their meals too--though I'll admit I was a little too focused on eating my burger to keep track of what everyone else ordered. Overall, The Wolf is a great spot with a fun atmosphere and really solid food and drinks. I'd definitely recommend it for a date night or a group dinner.

We even had chips left after eating all the dip, how often does that happen? The steak salad was done perfectly. Would have been nice to have a side plate to cut the meat but we figured it out. The El Gordito Pizza had a great crust and very tasty sauce, just right amount of ingredients. Held up nicely when picked up. Soft drink selection was ok. Really liked the brewery list for beers but come on, know which beer it is from each brewery. How many Hazy IPA does Ghost Town make or West Coast IPA does Original Pattern brew? Asked the waitress to check the keg and she came back and said it was an India Pale Ale. Slap my head! Overall, a very solid experience.

My chilaquiles were solid, and while the mole wasn't my favorite style, it had a good kick and was clearly well made. The issue for me is the price. I ended up paying over $30 for an appetizer, chilaquiles, and water, and that just didn't feel like a good value for what I got. This street has a lot of excellent options, including some true five-star spots at similar prices and others that are just better priced for everyday meals. When I'm spending that much for brunch-level food, I expect something that really knocks it out of the park, and this didn't quite get there. Nothing was bad. It was a pleasant experience. I just don't see myself going back given the cost and the competition nearby. If price isn't a concern, you might enjoy it more than I did. For me, it's a solid but expensive meal in a neighborhood with a lot of strong alternatives.

There was no wait time and we were able to get a table. The server was very sweet. I am vegetarian and was looking for veg options. She went through the menu with me and helped me think through. I got the vegan spicy tomato pizza and my friend got the shakshouka. We also got some herbal tea to go on the side. The tea came out pretty quickly and tasted great. The food also came out pretty quickly. The presentation of the pizza was top notch and I could not wait to dig in. The portion size was adequate. The vegan cheese was yummy and the spice level of the pizza was just right. The pizza was packed with flavor and thin crust! My friend liked the shakshouka too. He said it was flavorful and tasted great! Over all, we loved this restaurant. The ambiance is very welcoming and they have farm to table concept. We shared a plate of the tossed green salad and crispy Brussels sprouts, in addition to two pizzas - Fun-Gi and the Spicy Tomato. The crispy Brussels sprouts stole the show - the deep-frying created a smoky flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture that was equally loved by vegetarians and non-vegetarians in the group. The tossed salad was decent; the lettuce was heavily coated with oily dressing, which I think could have used more acidity. The Fun-Gi pizza was our favorite of the two pies - the hint of truffle oil and rosemary took this mushroom pizza to the next level. I also loved the light and airy crust, which had the perfect amount of crispiness. I wasn't as much of a fan of the Spicy Tomato pizza; while I really liked the unexpected sweetness from the tapenade, the cashew cream drizzle seemed out-of-place. The ambiance of the restaurant was whimsical and warm, providing the perfect backdrop for my friends to linger over our meal. The outdoor seating also looked very charming, and I imagine it would be nice to dine here on a warm, summer evening.
