First time at Daytrip counter. I knew this place was going to be good because I love tender rotisserie chicken, soft serve and kombucha. I also purchased the cookie. The black sesame coconut cookie is super buttery and very strong tasting. I recommend a coffee, a dark coffee to go with it. The chicken was melt in your mouth tender. Hands down the best rotisserie chicken I've ever had my life. I used to go to Joinery in Sausalito for rotisserie chicken but not anymore. So good I think I'm willing to move to Temescal just to be close. I got the combo half chicken. It comes with one salad, one side and one sauce for the chicken. The chicken doesn't need any sauce because it's perfectly tasty as it is. However the pesto sauce is delightful. I loved the pesto sauce and highly recommend it. The Club Med salad had everything in it. I am biased because I eat Mediterranean. The Med salad had green olives and gigante beans in it. The beans were still warm. There were so many flavors in this salad. The sheep feta is so fresh in it. High quality. I also loved the roasted cauliflower which is a pain to make at home. It was melt in your mouth tender and goes really well with the lemon tahini sauce and olive oil. All this for $40 and $3 for the cookie. Tip is 18% minimum for the preset lowest option. The lady at the counter was so friendly and kind. The music was lively. All in all, just a super cool place to come eat for the best healthy and tasty food available in North Oakland. When my bf asked me where I wanted to eat for our anniversary dinner, I knew exactly where I wanted to go! Once again, we have found ourselves at daytrip counter. We ordered the same thing as last time, the "combo #1." In this combo, we got: the crispy spicy salad, the sesame cauliflower, and the half bird with lemon tahini sauce. I also tried to the black sesame coconut cookie, this time. As usual, everything was super fresh and delicious. I thought the cookie was super fun and different, it's kind of a mixture between a macaroon & a cookie. It has a nice balance of sweet and salty, as well. Delicious flavors, generous portions, good value. I was impressed by the flavors and the quality. The roasted chicken was flavorful and juicy. The kale salad was bright and delicious. The sides of beans and cauliflower also hit the spot. All that for under $60? Not a bad deal. There are salads and sides suitable to a gourmandizing backyard picnic in Berkeley. But I only came for the roasted chicken. A half chicken is something like $18 and comes smothered in a thin schmaltz and stock gravy. Garnished with chives and a lime wedge. A more than capable roast chicken. Platonic ideal? Ideally, you'd want to make Daytrip Counter a group affair. Even the finest roast chicken can be tiresome. Been here for lunch a few times now and overall very impressed with the food. The caesar is really good and the chicken is great. Chicken tastes well seasoned but not too salty, just right for rotisserie. I haven't seen it on the menu but feels like a missed opportunity to not have a caesar wrap on the menu, which would make a really great to-go option although the salad works. I think I might try to make my own wrap with their salad in the future but just an idea as I think it would easily be the best in the bay area. Daytrip Counter is a cool, casual counter service spot focused on chicken with some great sides! First off, I love the decor of this place! It's very simple, but retro feeling and seating is super comfortable with plenty of booths. Do note that this place is primarily self service - while you order at the counter; utensils, water, and napkins are all self serve! I ordered the Club Med with Shredded Chicken and the Ceaser Fries, which were both good, but had some issues. Unfortunately, both dishes were wildly salty. The fries were especially bad in that regard, with the heavy Nori based seasoning and the anchovy based Ceaser. The salad was a better, but I found myself wanting a lot more of the base kale/lettuce, both to cut down on the amount of salt and to make the portion feel a little more full, as I wasn't quite satisfied when I left. I will definitely be coming back to try out their half chicken and potentially some of the drinks - they had some interesting lemonades on the menu! I have no past history with the previous iteration at this location, Daytrip. Apparently it was a more upscale restaurant with a 20% service charge, but the owners rethought their economic strategy and turned it into a counter order operation. This approach appealed to Jamie W and me since we were looking for a casual lunch on a post-workout Saturday afternoon. Rotisserie chicken sounded particularly appealing. Not knowing what kind of portion sizes they offered or how to mix and match, we both ordered the $39 Combo Meal #1, which was detailed as a half bird, one salad or bowl, one side, and one sauce. The price struck me as a bit high, but then I wasn't expecting three full courses. The first dishes to arrive were the salads, and they were honestly meals by themselves. Jamie chose the Basil Caesar Salad, a full plate of mixed greens covered in not just a thick Caesar dressing. It also included Grana Padano cheese, garlic breadcrumbs, and pickled peppers (Photo 9). Here was a case of the rich dressing and toppings overwhelming the freshness underneath. I had a better balance with the Club Med Salad, a Mediterranean delight with Castelvetrano olives, red cabbage, sheep's milk feta cheese, zaatar, Gigante beans, and a tangy lemon tahini vinaigrette (Photo 8). The buttery, vinaigrette-marinated beans were the standout here. The half chicken arrived on a separate plate, a plumped trinity of breast, thigh, and leg. Apparently it' was brined in a housemade vinaigrette and then marinated in a rub full of chives and seasonings. It was cooked on a slow-turning spit and then ladled with an intensely buttery "buerre monte" sauce. That's a lot of flavors and steps, but somehow it all worked. In fact, neither of us needed the lemon tahini sauce that came with it (Photo 10). In a just world, that would've been enough food had we known the portion sizes, but the side dishes arrived almost as soon as the chicken. One dish was the Sesame Cauliflower which was roasted in paprika and mixed liberally in lemon tahini and black sesame (Photo 6). It was again drenched in butter, a recurring theme with the food we ordered, and the use of lemon tahini yet again was moving toward overkill by this point in the meal. The other side was the Hot Honey Butter Green Beans smothered in Thai chile and lime butter and sprinkled with candied pumpkin seeds and breadcrumbs (Photo 7). This side brought welcome crunch and spiciness. Bottom line, we were overwhelmed by the amount of food we received, so we ended up taking a lot of it home for dinner. Next time we'll order just the Club Med salad with shredded chicken or perhaps the half chicken a la carte. Daytrip was a fun dine in night out experience but sauces were just a bit too salty. Converted into a more sit down counter experience, I think Daytrip has changed for the better! They now serve full combo meals -- some juicy rotisserie chicken with some sides of your choice. We opted for a Caesar salad and the chicken served w a side of fish sauce aioli. Everything was well prepared! Chicken was juicy, salad was well coated, and I loved the crispy fries (not pictured). My only gripe with the place was that the sauces - the one on the chicken plate, the fish sauce aioli, and the Caesar sauce served with the fries - were all just a bit too salty for my taste. Left me drinking more beer / water to balance it out. It's not a bad thing at all and maybe it's just a taste preference but that's my reason for docking a star here. My family just got this place for take out and oh my goodness it was soooo good! We got the whole chicken combo with an extra salad. The salad and bowls we got were truly special. The cilantro lime crunch bowl and the crispy spicy salad were both delicious and really interesting flavors! Amazing balance in both of interesting flavors with crunch, herbaceous-ness, sour/tangy, and umami. Seriously craveable.
