You know from all the fan fare this place has seemed to accumulate I was expecting the best chicken sandwich in the city! But, I regret to inform the yelp community that it might be the worse chicken sandwich I've ever had! It almost had a cinnamon taste to it, the chicken was hard, and stringy. It also just tasted greasy! I also tried the biscuit tender mini sandwich, and that was worse! It was super tough, and inedible.....I literally took a couple of bites, and had these long pieces of membrane in the chicken that tasted like rubber... Even if it's crowded they are churning out food quickly. It would be nice if tables were wiped down more frequently and napkins were restocked. But they were busy. There is dining options for inside or outside. On to the food. The chicken sandwich is huge! There was a lot of food. I could not finish. Their food is consistent and tasty. My sandwich had too much mayo for my personal preference so I'd ask for lite next time. Many of the folks who were walking by kept saying how good the food was here! Came back to The Bird to give it a try after a couple of years. The first time the chicken sandwich didn't hit the spot. I don't remember if it was the normal or spicy but from my old photo, it was drier and didn't have a wet sauce coating. I felt like it had too much of a cinnamon flavor. I'm glad I went back, and for happy hour too which is a plus. This time I got the spicy chicken sandwich. It was packed with flavor, super moist, the one thing I didn't like was how stringy the piece of chicken was. It made eating it a bit tough as it ripped in long shreds. I didn't experience the cinnamon flavor that I didn't like the first time which was good. The curly fries were nicely seasoned but we did get mostly tiny end pieces which made it hard to eat. The mango habanero wings have a nice kick but do lean towards a sweeter and mango flavor. The item I would skip is the apple fritter bites. They were over fried with inconsistent saucing on top. This is a very hot sandwich so I advise to wait a few minutes before taking a bite as I burned my tongue a couple of times. The sauce, coleslaw and pickles work so wonderfully well with the sandwich. With two locations in the San Francisco area, the Bird (founded in 2016) is a part of the Back of the House restaurant group, owner of eight other concepts. It has a small menu, focusing on crispy chicken sandwiches in a fast food setting. I found the original chicken sandwich to be good, with the added potatoes being a requisite for the meal. This location was within walking distance from our hotel, so took a walk through the blustery weather. The seating is arranged communal bench style with 6-8 person seating at each table. So we decided to get the order to go. One can place the order through a self-service kiosk with a phone number: you will get a text when the order is ready for pick-up at the front counter. All the sandwiches use the same excellent burger bun (learned it is also used at their sister restaurant, Super Duper. The naked bird ($8) spicy choice was a cut up fried chicken piece, and was indeed quite spicy hot. The cutting up made the chicken a bit drier though. The OG Fried chicken sandwich ($10.25) WAS juicy and provided some good bites. I had asked for the coleslaw to be on the side, and a decent amount was given as a side. The coleslaw is a house made apple slaw, and it was quite good (though the apple tasted more like jicama). We also got a Buffalo Bird ($11), the OG dunked in Buffalo sauce. The OG is a lot better choice, for cheaper, too. Curly fries ($4) and tater tots ($3.50) added the necessary starch to the meal. The tater tots were the clear winner, with many of the curly fries pieces being overcooked and dry. Toast was the payment processor, giving us a clear digital receipt. I think it is brined but it is real meat. They have a truly, hearty, good ass chicken sandwich that lives up to competition with any other. It's better than anything you can get at a fast food spot. I'd prefer it spicier, but the sandwich was very tasty and I would order this again. The Apple Fritters are shaped slightly larger and denser than your typical donut hole. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and a fountain drink. I also ordered an order of curly fries, which I was planning to pay for but I was told it was included for this event, which was great. There are plenty of seating spots inside and they also have outdoor seating. I had to go back to the office for a meeting so I ordered my food to go. My order was ready quickly. The fries and sandwich were not soggy when I got back to the office. I was stunned by the size of the fried chicken -- it was huge! The curly fries were crispy and lightly salted just the way I like them. The spicy chicken was definitely spicy so if you don't do well with spicy food, I would recommend getting the non-spicy one instead. You can actually see the chicken and it's 100% not one of those processed chicken patties. Overall, the experience was just like before: friendly, clean, delicious, and quick. Now that I have to go back into the office more often this will for sure be one of my go-to spots. The sandwich is served with their "dijonaise" which is very good and a pickle thinly sliced length-wise. Parking is a little tricky, but we've managed to get lucky all the times we've eaten here. The Bird makes a sensational fried chicken sandwich in classic or spicy, which is SO GOOD, (if you like spicy, get it!) I haven't bothered trying anything else on the menu. The chicken is perfectly fried and basted in spicy buffalo sauce and comes with a simple yet delicious house made apple slaw, pickle, celery and mayo and a freshly baked bun. I believe they also have a chicken biscuit, tater tots, curly fries, one type of salad that can be topped with chicken and Apple fritter bites. I'm probably missing a few other things on the menu, will post a photo of the menu the next time we visit. They also carry a small variety of canned beer and have wine and beer on tap and a few highball cocktails as well. If I remember correctly, I think you can order your food on a touchscreen, otherwise it's counter service and you collect your food when it's ready. The space is somewhat small, with a few counter level tabletops and some seating by the windows. Most, if not all the packaging is compostable!
