I was happy to see that The Bird was opened relatively late compared to most places in SF so we headed there after catching a movie around 10pm and boy was I disappointed after hearing so much hype about this place. Ordered the following: *Chicken Biscuit & Tots - First, I was happy that there was a smaller portion sized item on the menu so I ordered this and IMMEDIATELY REGRETTED THIS DECISION. The biscuit was the driest biscuit I have ever had in my LIFE! It was too "floury" and was falling apart the moment I picked it up and not in that "yummy flaky" kinda way but in the "I'm about to steal every single drop of saliva in your mouth" kinda way. The chicken ALSO DRY! It was literally a piece cut off a bigger piece of chicken becuase it was cleanly cut and I could see the white meat. They didnt even bother to cut it and then batter and fry it. LAZY MOVE? I'm not sure but it was sorta weird. The chicken was also flavorless so that sucked. The tots were good! Literally the ONLY saving grace for this order. *Fried Chicken Sandwich - Not sure what was up with the bread but it was STALE AF!!! Crumbled and fell apart with every bite. Chicken was yummy and so were the slaw and pickles etc, but none of it stayed in the sandwich due to the stale ass bread that was falling apart. Ended up eating the rest with a fork and knife. It's hard to imagine that you can find a chicken sandwich for under $11 in San Francisco's upscale Hayes Valley, but the Bird is the place to get one! The Fried Chx Sando here consisted of a breaded chicken fillet served with a crunchy slaw and pickles in a soft bun. The fried chicken was covered in a red chili powder, and while I'm a fan of spice, there was so much chili powder that the sandwich actually tasted bitter! I may have found my new favorite lunch spot near the office. And an excellent after work spot for games or trivia on Wednesdays amazing service, thank you Sammire and Joseph (so?). Loved the chicken tenders with the spicy rub, the spicy mayo, how sauce is delicious, and definitely if you're ordering any of the chicken, the pickles are excellent add-ons. Also ran into two coworkers here who were picking up a dozen of the apple fritters differing back to the office! Very excited for that. read more

The Bird is a solid go-to chain spot with two convenient SF locations in SoMa and Hayes Valley, and I love their partnership with Super Duper since it means you can mix and match from either menu anywhere they operate. Service is somewhat non-existent as you can only order from a kiosk, which I find a bit odd i.e. to not offer counter ordering whatsoever and ambience is very much fast casual. The main get here is the spicy fried chicken sandwich, which delivers a nice mild-to-medium heat balanced against tasty slaw and pickles. The bun strikes just the right thickness (I hate when the bread to filling ratio is way off in either direction) as it is sturdy enough to hold everything together without falling apart mid-bite. I'd love if they cranked up the spice a notch, but that's obviously specific to the individual. On my latest visit, I also tried the lemon pepper chicken tenders, which were a letdown and would not recommend. They had basically no seasoning (zero lemon pepper flavor but also barely any salt or pepper) and were also a bit over fried. The curly fries and tots are standard issue, nothing fancy but the mango habanero sauce was just weird as it was oddly not sweet or spicy, with an unpleasant vinegar-like consistency that I tried once and never went back for. I had a pretty good experience at this place. I was here on a Sunday at 12noon and there was plenty of seating available throughout the restaurant. I had the salad and added a "half" order of chicken- the half order is very small...three medium pieces of chicken topping the salad. I also tried the chicken biscuit, which was just okay...the chicken was decent, but the biscuit was dry and crumbly and didn't hold up well to the everything inside the sandwich. I went here for the second time to pick up food because my first experience was pretty good. That first time, I got the spicy fried chicken sandwich. It was juicy and well balanced with slaw. But this time I was really disappointed. I got the non spicy version this time, and the chicken was gross. Super stringy, woody, and overcooked. And when I say stringy, I mean it was so stringy that the first bite stretched a piece like a one foot elastic band and snapped back spewing food all over the place. I'm not even exaggerating. Bland as well. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined lol. If I was dining in I probably would've asked them to remake it. I actually wanted to dine in today, but I decided to order to go because the inside is super dark and dreary feeling, with shitty music being blasted at you. Otherwise, it's not really worth getting. ------ Used to eat at the Bird as a regular back when they first opened in Berkeley. Those were the days when it used to be spicy, crispy, crunchy, seasoned extremely well, and fresh. Nowadays, not so much -- more like soggy, cold, and bland. It's one of the few times where I felt like the food's cost and calories was not worth it. However, they were able to remake the burger that everyone should receive by just flash frying and re-seasoning the patty. So make sure to ask for that when ordering. read more
