The Bird is a solid go-to chain spot with two convenient SF locations in SoMa and Hayes Valley, and I love their partnership with Super Duper since it means you can mix and match from either menu anywhere they operate. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service is somewhat non-existent as you can only order from a kiosk, which I find a bit odd i.e. to not offer counter ordering whatsoever and ambience is very much fast casual.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The main get here is the spicy fried chicken sandwich, which delivers a nice mild-to-medium heat balanced against tasty slaw and pickles. The bun strikes just the right thickness (I hate when the bread to filling ratio is way off in either direction) as it is sturdy enough to hold everything together without falling apart mid-bite. I'd love if they cranked up the spice a notch, but that's obviously specific to the individual. On my latest visit, I also tried the lemon pepper chicken tenders, which were a letdown and would not recommend. They had basically no seasoning (zero lemon pepper flavor but also barely any salt or pepper) and were also a bit over fried. The curly fries and tots are standard issue, nothing fancy but the mango habanero sauce was just weird as it was oddly not sweet or spicy, with an unpleasant vinegar-like consistency that I tried once and never went back for. I went here for the second time to pick up food because my first experience was pretty good. That first time, I got the spicy fried chicken sandwich. It was juicy and well balanced with slaw. But this time I was really disappointed. I got the non spicy version this time, and the chicken was gross. Super stringy, woody, and overcooked. And when I say stringy, I mean it was so stringy that the first bite stretched a piece like a one foot elastic band and snapped back spewing food all over the place. I'm not even exaggerating. We ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($10) and a side of French fries ($3.75). The sandwich had a touch of chipotle sauce, but it wasn't too spicy. The fries were crispy and served hot. The meal felt reasonably priced for the Hayes Valley area, especially since it's close to venues like SFJAZZ Center, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Ballet, and San Francisco Opera. Before ordering, ask them to prepare it fresh and re-season it. They should be able to flash-fry the patties instead of serving the ones that have been sitting cold and soggy on the shelf. Otherwise, it's not really worth getting. ------ Used to eat at the Bird as a regular back when they first opened in Berkeley. Those were the days when it used to be spicy, crispy, crunchy, seasoned extremely well, and fresh. Nowadays, not so much -- more like soggy, cold, and bland. It's one of the few times where I felt like the food's cost and calories was not worth it. Given the hype, I was pretty disappointed. I had high expectations for the fried chicken sandwich, but the chicken was stringy and hard to bite through, instead of buying succulent and juicy. The pickles were sliced so thinly that they didn't provide much texture or flavor. Curly fries were fine, but not served piping not. Salad had good components and I think that the recipe works on paper, but it was drowned in dressing. i went here on a whim a going in a super long walk across the city and i was starving, this was the only thing nearby that was open after 10pm so I didn't know what to expect. I know that San Francisco prices are expensive for meals, but how are the fries portions so ridiculously off get there the same price, and the garlic fries came soggy and cold, but the curly fries refresh. The only things I finished out of everything I bought were the curly fries and the juice. I got the spicy fried chicken sandwich, not sure if they gave me a sandwich that was sitting there for a while, but it was not crispy at all. The sauce had flavor but was not spicy to me, but whatever it was, it had a sweetness to it that made it taste disgusting to me. The celery slaw was not to my liking at all. It didn't help balance out the sauce that coded the chicken and the buns. The only thing salvageable on that sandwich was the pickle slice. Blue cheese sauce was also incredibly mid and didn't salvage anything else I put it on. personally will not be going back here but maybe you will have a better experience here if you choose eat here read more
