Rooster & Rice is a chain with multiple locations serving up Khao Mun Gai (or Thai style chicken rice), but my most recent order with them really fell flat. I ordered "The Original" with jasmine chicken rice, extra cilantro, cucumber, chicken skin (love that those are free add-ons), and an egg, and while the bowl was fine, all of the flavors felt like they could've been amped up several notches as everything leaned pretty bland and one note. I even swapped in the ginger scallion sauce, usually my favorite with Hainanese chicken, but it still fell flat and didn't bring the dish together the way I'd hoped. The dark meat was okay, if under-seasoned, but the breast meat was honestly pretty rough as it was extremely dry to the point where I was chasing each bite with water just to get it down. I added the chicken spring rolls as well, which were poorly wrapped and fell apart after a single bite, and they used the same overcooked white meat, making them basically inedible. If this is the standard for their white meat, I really think they should either stick to dark meat or make it clear that dark meat is an option without an upcharge. That said, my order was ready right when I expected it to be, pickup was smooth, and the staff were very nice and friendly, which keeps this from dropping lower in rating as I'm likewise hoping this was just an off night. read more

Happy Hour pricing is advertised for Monday through Friday, 4:00-6:00 pm and last hour before closing, which was 7:00-8:00 pm tonight. This signage is to the right of the entryway, fully visible. My receipt has my order placed at 7:29 pm, so clearly happy hour eligible. I entered the storefront already knowing what I was going to order, the young male working the front was sitting on a stool while looking down at his phone. I approached the front counter, he looked up at me as I continued walking to the counter to place my order, but then he looked back down at his phone.. So, being ignored completely and purposely, I order through the kiosk. I assumed the kiosk would be programmed to automatically discount orders during happy hour periods, but that didn't happen with my order. I, regretfully, even tipped on this order...for the kitchen staff, I guess... There was another pair of customers who had ordered before me already there when I arrived, based on the numbering system on their order compared to my name from the kiosk, it was clear that they had been rung up by a human. I'm waiting for my order and the next customer walks in, places their order, and the cashier tells them the total, then corrects himself and applies the happy hour discount, then tells the customer the discounted total. So, pretty sure I would've received the happy hour discount if he had bothered to ring me up instead of ignoring me and having me order through the kiosk. I don't know why I wasn't worth the time for this young person to put his phone down, get off his stool, and take my order...like he did for the customers before me and after me...but this purposeful discrimination cost me 25% compared to the other customers in the store while I was there. I'm sure it's more that he's just young and lazy, and not any actual discrimination or prejudice against me compared to the customers immediately before and after me, but I am genuinely curious why he ignored me after looking at me. It's so dumb. I love this place, and this location is better than the other ones I've been to. And, of course, the food still tasted as good as it always does. I didn't even go there because of the discount, I was just glad I made it before closing after driving 8 hours home from SoCal and wanted comforting food. I mentioned that the kiosk doesn't apply the happy hour discount and he just stared at me blankly without saying a word. I gave him a few seconds to see if he'd say anything at all, but then I bailed him out and just said "just so you're aware" and walked out. R&R is usually my go to so I'm sad that I need to post this to warn everyone that something is seriously wrong at this location. I ordered my usual Original through Uber Eats and received about 2 ounces of chicken breast total in my meal for which I was charged $16.95 plus tax, tip and fees. I'm on a restricted medical diet so I've gone through phases in the last few months where I've ordered this exact meal everyday for weeks on end and there is usually a good sized chicken breast included. They either screwed up my order or have started ripping customers off. When I called to try to get answers the employee I spoke with was extremely rude and tried to blame the missing chicken on the delivery driver despite my telling them the package arrived stapled shut with the receipt and no sign of tampering. They refused to apologize and acknowledge that they'd either made a mistake or dramatically changed their portion size and instead kept trying to gaslight me in every way they could think of. The ginger scallion sauce is also totally wrong, instead of the delicious combo they usually offer this was just brown, grated ginger with some canola oil poured on top of it. They charged me the usual $2.95 for a tiny serving, though. DON'T patronize this location, something is seriously wrong. read more

I love rooster and rice. I usually go to the one in stonestown, but I was in the Marina area today, so I decided to order some food for dinner. The person working there seemed tired and didn't really greet me, but I wasn't too thrown off. I ordered the original with brown rice and was charged the extra $3 for the substitute. I was handed the "to go" bag fairly quickly, since I was the only person there. When I got home, I opened the bag to eat my food, but was disappointed to find that I got jasmine rice instead of the brown rice. I normally don't eat white rice as it spikes my blood sugar. Maybe I should have checked right there and then? I paid extra and didn't get the right order, while being the only person physically there. Rooster and Rice is a local chain with several more locations. At the time of my visit, there was no indoor seating, only outdoor. This spot is a case of doing one simple dish and doing it well. Their one dish is a poached chicken, served with skin on (original) or off (Marina-style.) The chicken comes with a tangy garlic ginger sauce, lots of fresh chopped cucumber, a tiny sprig of cilantro, a small cup of chicken broth and hot sauce (habanero or sriracha) if requested. It's a very simple, satisfying dish, known as Hainanese chicken rice, popular in Thailand, Singapore and other countries. I tend to be a fan of roast chicken and fried chicken, both featuring a crisp skin. I don't have much experience with poached chicken, so I can't compare it to the original. Here it comes with a soft gummy skin, and the meat was plump and moist. A pungent ginger sauce was served on the side, and bursts with flavor, pulling the dish together. It's served with a cup of savory chicken broth, which can be sipped solo (and sadly was in a styrofoam cup.) The broth is delicious and soothing. It can be poured over the dish, if you like. A simple, tasty lunch. Sad they were not selling the fried chicken skin cracklings I saw in Yelp photos. For me, that would have been next level. read more

The menu is simple and offers few options like a food truck, as this place only focuses on their specialty of cold ginger chicken. The original chicken plate I ordered included garlic flavored rice and a very smooth chicken broth soup. All flavors were authentic, fresh, and mouthwatering! This restaurant has no indoor seating and only three small tables outside, so space is limited and their business caters to the take out and Uber eats crowds. With such good food, this place deserves a full indoor dining set to match the amazing flavors. My only complaint is that a couple items are pricey. I haven't had Hainanese chicken rice in a long time & passed by on my way to the hardware store so I decided to finally check it out. After a quick scan of the menu I decided to order number one, the original. I normally don't eat rice at home (trying to avoid white carbs) but when I read it was jasmine rice and I know that Hainanese chicken rice normally features cooked in chicken broth & some fat which gives it flavor, I was convinced to try it. When I picked it up & brought it home, I couldn't resist the smell of the fragrant food. I dug in and devoured the whole dish. It was so good. Yum. No leftovers for later and/or I was really hungry. I was still pretty full around dinner time so I had the mango rice pudding. It has good mango flavor & the strawberry sauce adds a bit of sweetness & flavor variety. If I could them them 0/5, I would. My friends and I got food poisoning. On Saturday evening, I ordered 3 plate of the original online. We requested extra cucumbers, extra cilantro, and 1 (free) habanero sauce. They did not provide us with any of the items we requested. My friends and I are our meal, and in a few hours, we started to feel sick. On Sunday afternoon, I called and spoke with the team. The gentleman on the phone (I didn't catch his name) informed me a refund will be issued in addition to an refund receipt will be provided to the email on file. I waited until the evening and did not receive the refund email receipt. On Monday, I called the shop. Issac picked up the phone. When I informed him about my call yesterday. He said "I wasn't the one you spoke with. Email my manager Jamie" and provided me with an email. I emailed jamie@roosterandrice.com and it bounced back. I called back and Issac said he will take down my information and text his manager right away. It's Tuesday, and I have not heard back. I tried calling the shop again and they stopped taking my calls. I do not recommend coming here at all. The service and food is absolutely terrible. read more

"This Location" ESPECIALLY! I always come to this location vs the other ones. For some reason not sure if it's me but the service and the flavoring of everything is so good at this one. Maybe it was my first time at this location years ago and it left an impressive on me that this is the location I should keep returning to over and over. I absolutely love how they poach their chicken and their special bean sauce pour over your chicken and rice is fantastic. Maybe it's just me but I love clean foods and quality ingredients. Their broth soup is SO GOOD it's not too sweet or too salty it feels and taste so right. It's nice and clear broth it comes with poaching the chicken.
