A Last-Minute Yelp Find That Delivered! Heading home from San Francisco, we decided to stop for pasta. A last minute Yelp search led us to Creekwood in Berkeley, and luckily, I was able to secure a reservation inside. What a great find! Creekwood is in a residential neighborhood, which I love, although parking can definitely be a challenge. The exterior is architecturally pleasing, with clean lines and a fresh, modern look. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by the hostess with a huge welcome and an equally huge smile. The restaurant has a cozy bar area, outside seating, and an estimated seating capacity of 50 guests. Inside, there is a combination of banquettes and tables that can be configured to accommodate different party sizes. The interior was extremely clean, visually appealing, comfortable and inviting. The bathroom was also extremely clean. Our server Malia was personable and offered great suggestions, as did several other staff members. Everyone we encountered was genuinely friendly and welcoming. We started with the corn chowder and burrata. The chowder arrived a little under-temperature for my liking, but the flavor was excellent. The burrata was plentiful, paired with tomatoes that were absolutely bursting with flavor. The burrata and tomatoes complemented each other beautifully, and there was just the right amount of dressing. My tablemate ordered the Margherita pizza, which arrived at the perfect temperature. Thin crust, fresh basil and great flavor it was exactly what a Margherita pizza should be. I was craving a meat based pasta with red sauce, but that wasn't on the menu. So I ordered the pappardelle with mushrooms and asked if they could prepare it with a red sauce. They were happy to accommodate me. It arrived at the perfect temperature, with beautifully cooked pasta and an orchestra of flavors. The depth and texture of the mushrooms gave me the satisfying, meaty texture I was craving. I would absolutely order this dish again! One of the highlights of our visit was meeting Greg, the owner, who was circulating throughout the restaurant and talking with his guests. We were first-timers, but clearly, many of his diners were what I like to call "repeat offenders." in the best way. Greg shared some of the history of Creekwood and explained that his goal was to create a true neighborhood restaurant and gathering place. I would say he has definitely accomplished that. He also mentioned that he is considering adding a happy hour, which would be a wonderful addition. They do have Coctails, beer and wine although I did not partake this time. Greg told us about one couple who has visited for brunch more than 149 times! Now THAT is a referral! If I lived in the neighborhood, I have no doubt I would become a repeat offender myself. Sometimes the best restaurant discoveries are the ones you make at the last minute. Creekwood was definitely a successful Yelp selection, and one I'm happy to recommend. My friend and I went on a Thursday for dinner. We arrived early, a little before 5 pm. We were greeted immediately and shown to a booth. It is a small restaurant with tables and several booths by the window. They also have outdoor patio service. We ordered a half dozen Point Reyes oysters on the half shell. They were very fresh. The crispy Brussels sprouts were nicely cooked. My friend ordered the black cod and I ordered the crab with pasta in white sauce. We also ordered a glass of Chardonnay and a glass of Sancerre. The black cod was delicious. I found my pasta dish a bit bland. We shared a piece of carrot cake. It was very good, moist, just sweet enough with a perfect frosting. The service was attentive. It is a very noisy restaurant. The staff was moving furniture around at the beginning. I asked to have the music lowered in volume. The room may benefit from more acoustic tiling since the noise bounced around the floor and walls. read more

This restaurant in South Berkeley is pretty good. The Vodka lemonade was nothing to write home about but everything else was quite pleasing. The arancini was good a bit different from my go to place. The meatballs with toast were quite pleasant. I had the pappardelle which had an ample amount of crab. The dish wasn't big but the quality was there. A bit pricey for $38 but heck I like pappardelle. We brought our friends here for a birthday celebration. It is a small neighborhood restaurant, delicious food and easy parking. We started off with a family sized beet salad. We also had the arancini which was 3 balls of goodness. We Also shared a crispy Brussels sprouts dish which is a must order each time I come. With my partner's family, we went to Berkeley to try this delectable restaurant. Parking was quite easy to find and we were the first customers inside. The servers were all quite friendly and happy to help. We were seated and ordered a few beers, brussel sprouts, pork chop, steak, gnocchi, campanelle, and burrata. A lot of people don't know that the City of Berkeley sits on top of a number of creeks. Long before the city was built, these creeks flowed bringing vibrant life and beauty to the region. Well Creekwood is doing just that! This quaint restaurant on Sacramento Ave. brings a nice array of Italian and American cuisine. With both indoor and outdoor seating you can be fulfilled on a cold or hot day. I was very impressed w/ the Cesar Salad. Actual fresh anchovies and the perfect blend of lettuce, croutons and dressing. A great salad to at pair w/ wine and to start your pasta/mains. For me the Cameroni was the highlight. I loved the pork sausage ragu w/ touches of broccolini topped w/ pecorino and fennel. Honestly when I first saw on the menu that it was lightly topped w/ fennel seeds, I got nervous. Too much could throw off the whole dish. But that wasn't the case. I feel like you really can't go wrong with w/ any of the pizza selections. For us, the Mushroom Pizza definitely hit the spot. Of course I had to come back here to try some new dishes since the last time we were here we enjoyed our food. We like doing brunch so this place had a good menu for brunch. We got here about an hour after opening and it wasn't that busy at all. We sat down and the waitress came by to see if we wanted some waters which we did. We ordered the meatballs appetizer and then the mimosa special which was a bottle of sparkling and a carafe of OJ for $45. A great way to start the day and for the price you can't beat it. The meatballs came out and they were just as good as I remembered. Tender, juicy, and a great marinara sauce. For our entrees we ordered the pastrami Benedict and the egg sandwhich with bacon. Our order came out pretty quick which you expect since it wasn't busy. My egg sandwhich was delicious, the bread was light, the eggs were fluffy, the bacon was cooked crispy which I like, and the potatoes were also cooked perfect crispy like I like. Brought my extended family here for their first time and dinner was absolute perfection! Creekwood is a great restaurant to get a post workout protein fix. I come here and order the meatball plate. It's $20 and you get a plate packed with meatballs. There's a delicious red sauce on the meatballs that apparently they cook overnight. Love the interior. Nice comfortable place to sit. But I mostly come alone like I said after my workout. Well we came back for dinner and ordered the pizza turned out that it's only looks good on picture from Our fellow yelped. The dough was hard and the sauce was nothing to brag about. Landed here in our search for blue cheese and pear pizza BUT we missed it by like six months. The pizza they're offering now is the blue cheese and PEACH pizza. Anyway, we felt it was a well crafted pizza.. rich smell of blue cheese.. the peach slice flavors also really popped when I ate them individually. If I do have to nitpick, the pancetta was a toss up. I felt it was too dry and crunchy; my wife loved it because of the texture. Highly recommend this pizza though! I ordered the speck pizza. I'm not too impressed with this one because I'm not getting consistent flavors with every bite. The smoked prosciutto usually disappear from the first bite leaving you with nothing else. read more

Lovely and accommodating wait staff. I always appreciate an offer of a glass of wine when you're waiting to be seated. The good was delicious. Not sure what they put in this brussel sprouts but wow. Crisp and salty sweet. I had the burrata salad with citrus and cumquats. Disappointed in two tiny cut up cumquats and two bites of arugula. I asked the waiter for more greens and he accommodated easily and promptly. Everyone else at our table loved their food. My only complaint about the space is how loud it is. We came here after a play nearby and walked in without a reservation. We ordered pasta and pizza. The pasta was fine, though my partner said that the sauce could have been better. The pizza was on the drier side and also could have used more flavor. The dessert was nice -- we had cookies and cream gelato and almond cake. However, the cake was a little more on the dry side. On a whim, my family opted to dine here on the night of the Super Bowl; and, in true American fashion, the restaurant was barren with many would-be patrons busy spectating one of the biggest nights of gridiron football at home. After getting pretty much immediately seated, our waitress kindly took our orders and offered us still water for the table. The appetizers (Caesar salad and burrata) arrived pretty quickly. The Caesar salad, while pedestrian, was still good and delightfully yet mildly fishy with the anchovy dressing. The burrata was a measly portion, given the whopping $20 price tag, but, the candied kumquats and citrus slices that adorned the sides still paired nicely with the creamy cheese. For our entrees, we ordered the decadent Wagyu ribeye, a lasagna, and a blue cheese pizza. My gripe with the steak is that the bordelaise sauce drowned out the sumptuous, tender piece of meat, overwhelming an already rich cut with unnecessary flavor. Not a fan. The pizza was good but simply cannot contend with the abundance of great Bay Area pizzerias. I appreciated the heap of arugula that sat atop though. And, lastly, the lasagna was just okay but too mushy to see any discernible layers. Honestly, I probably won't return. The establishment touts an Opentable Diner's Choice award as well as a fairly high Yelp rating, but I'm not sure if I can attest to the accolades. The service was great though. My wife Ellie and I stumbled upon Creekwood while visiting Berkeley this evening, and it turned out to be the perfect find -- the kind of dinner that reminds you why you love going out. Ellie had a glass of California Chardonnay and I had a Tuscan red blend; both were excellent choices for the evening. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Greg, who has connections to Sonoma wine country -- and it was genuinely fun to swap memories and talk shop. That kind of warmth from ownership shows up in every corner of the restaurant. We'll absolutely be back. I came here because I saw Pear & Blue Cheese Pizza from some older reviews/menus and that's my favorite pizza combo I discovered in Italy. I was a little sad to find out that it was no longer on the current rotation and it switched to Peach & Blue Cheese ($23), but gave it a try anyways. The pizza came, and I could immediately smell the pungent blue cheese odor. And I absolutely loved it! An issue I have at a lot of pizza places is that they never go heavy enough on the blue cheese, but that wasn't the case here. And although peach is a little different from pear, the overall pizza was still delicious and well made. This was a pleasant surprise. We really enjoyed Creekwood. Nice interior and open kitchen. Server was very accommodating and knowledgeable. Beer and Wine only but that's ok. We had the Beet Salad, Meatballs, Pork Sausage Ragu and the Pork Chop. The Ragu comes with Cameroni noodles but the server let us sub Pappardelle. Dessert was disappointing though. Had the tiramisu. It is more like a dense cake than a traditional tiramisu. That's ok though. Everything else was excellent. Will definitely come back again the next time we're in the East Bay. read more
