If you ask, they will heat it up just a little bit for you. The inside gets warmer than the outside and the contrast is amazing. I usually go early and the person at the front is so helpful. This is a great place, and a wonderful addition to the San Pablo community.

If you've ever had Arsicault, then you'll understand what I mean when I say this place is a true contender. And the best part? You don't have to travel far, pay that toll bridge, or deal with expensive gas. Save all that and give this place a try! Do note: Canelé -- available Friday to Sunday Pastel de nata (Portuguese tarts) -- available Saturday & Sunday What I've tried: Croissant -- Yum, yum, yum! From end to end, it has that perfectly crunchy exterior, and not a hollow bite in sight. Every bite is flaky, buttery, and satisfying. Chocolate Croissant -- A must if you love chocolate. Rich, flaky, and indulgent. Almond Croissant -- Another delicious contender. Nutty, sweet, and absolutely worth it. Apricot Croissant -- Not bad at all. The apricot adds a nice touch without overpowering the pastry. Bostock -- This one was a miss for me. It looked beautiful, but it was missing that little finesse that makes you want another bite. Gâteau au Fromage (Basque Cheesecake) -- A bit pricey, but so worth the splurge because they really know how to nail it. One bite and you won't be able to stop until it's gone. Pastel de Nata -- Crispy edges with a delicate, creamy, and delicious filling. That crunch is everything. Canelé -- These babies sell fast, so make sure to get there when they open. I love the crunchy exterior paired with that soft, custardy inside. Yum, yum, yum! Chocolate Fondant -- Not bad, but not my favorite. I've definitely had better elsewhere. Chocolate Hazelnut Cake -- The flavor was nice, but I found this one just a tad dry. Bottom line: While not everything was a home run, their croissants, canelés, Basque cheesecake, and pastel de nata are absolutely worth coming back for. A hidden gem that delivers big on flavor without the long drive. Definitely worth the visit!

We've also recently been loving their yummy handheld chicken pot pie, and their ham/cheese brekky croissants are so delish. If not grabbing to-go, you order at the register and take your number to an open table. There's a few TVs, and we watched a women's rugby game while waiting for our order. We shared a Caesar and I had a tuna melt with fries, hubby ordered a cheeseburger with fries. We also ordered a few regular chocolate chip cookies on the way out too. Everything was solid, comforting, fresh, and left us with that feel-good community diner feeling. Service is always excellent, the staff here is so fun and friendly. This location is a well-oiled machine and so beloved in the El Cerrito community. The holidays are coming up, and if you haven't visited Fat Apple's yet, their pies are a hot ticket. They even sell individually wrapped pie servers which could make a nice gift for the holidays. They're now selling pizza and Detroit-style too. Beer/wine as well. Enjoy holiday and seasonal specials. Parking is tight, but there's also nearby street parking as well.

The chef was outside helping out and he was super nice very friendly. He was very enthusiastic about his dessert and was introducing it to us. We went when the store is almost closing, so there wasn't that many selection left, but we got the vanilla custard and that was so good full of the vanilla flavor. It's not overly sweet and feel very light. It was so good that I even got another one to take home with me. They also have a good selection of Macaron and they are not overly sweet. They are very light and the seasoning was really well. The cake was also really good. I got one of the chocolate walnut cake and that one was very rich with coffee flavor. I love it. I will definitely come back again.

Honestly, they really need to include signs and probably allergen information as well. But I'm not sure if the owners opt to omit the signage on purpose to encourage conversation. Recently picked up a mini bite-sized, Lava Chocolate Mooncake, which I thought was a nice and new fusion style creation. When I brought it home and cut into it, told myself I am definitely getting this again next time I'm at a Sheng Kee Bakery! Loved the gooey "lava" flow of the chocolate sauce in the filling. They used lotus seed and multiple beans (white kidney beans, red, mung, etc) in the bean paste filling too. Was perfectly not too sweet and the mini size was perfect for me not to overindulge. Sheng Kee is one of my favorite chain brands for Taiwanese/Asian bakeries. Prices are usually reasonable and quality/flavor is consistent. They seem to be a popular regional brand as I've only ever seen them around Northern California.

The bakery is typical of what you would see from a Cantonese bakery. I would say the quality has been declining in recent years. In my latest batch, I found a hair in my pineapple bun which has not happened before but it's not going to stop me from getting my walnut cookies! The location is convenient and the staff is pleasant.

The melty chocolate inside with all that almond goodness baked on top?! oouff Heavenly. I'll occasionally get the veggie quiche slice too, especially when they have the corn & potato one. Somehow I always stick to my same three favorites even though everything in those cases looks amazing. I really need to venture out already because those cakes?! Whew. Yes, it's a little pricey, but I mean...you're in the Berkeley Hills and isn't EVERYTHING overly expensive nowadays? At least here, I leave feeling like it was worth it. Worth the line. Honestly, the line has become part of my strategy. It gives me time to scope out everything in the window and plan what I want before I get to the front. The freshness of the bread is hard to beat, especially for the prices. Between the selection, helpful staff, and quality, this is one line I don't mind standing in. Bottom line: See a line?
