Haven't actually been to the bakery itself but at a friend's birthday party, she had gotten some of their lemon cupcakes with raspberry frosting from her local natural grocery. They were so amazing that we asked her where they came from so we could leave some well-earned praise. These were rich cakes with a perfect combo of lemon tartness, sweetness and the richness of (I think) toasty corn flour. I might have the corn wrong but whatever the savory backdrop to the sweet lemon, it worked perfectly. Then the tall thick layers of delicately piped creamy raspberry frosting complimented the lemon perfectly. Not just "good for something vegan," these were "amazing, period." On the Great British Bake-Off, they would have earned a Hollywood handshake for sure! read more

We had the vegan lemon cupcakes with raspberry icing for a friend's birthday and they were swoon worthy - light, moist, flavorful! Even non vegans would like this. read more

My spouse SC had a problem with their cupcakes. The bakery did not follow up after the phone call.

Super dry, tasteless small birthday cake. Would have returned but as the mini cake is so small it wasn't worth the gas to get back to Whole Foods. A true disappointment. A few years ago I rave about the brand. Never again, and cannot recommend. read more

I have tried the chocolate cupcakes and purchased the chocolate-non-gluten for a friend's b'day. Not impressed, but then food, like art, is subjective. Word on the street is that they are doing away with Just Desserts which they purchased 5 years ago. HUGE mistake. Just Dessert fans will not make the switch. This is a bad decision and needs to be seriously reconsidered. Keep both! You don't cease a 52 year old brand. At the very least, re-brand with Rubicon logo and maintain the recipes. Unhappy (in case you couldn't tell) camper. read more

The cake and icing are very good. I would have given 5 stars but I think it's icing/cream overload. First, there is an ample amount of icing on the top. Then, there is more inside - I think it's the same stuff. Very tasty, very moist- coming from a former professional pastry chef at the Ritz. And these are perfect for you if you like a lot of icing/cream/schmutz. read more

I found a wad of black hair baked into one of the cupcakes I purchased. I wrote to them and let them know what happened. They made me go through the chains, give packaging lot number and do such. They said they would offer a replacement and that was never received. Then when I inquired about the replacement, they ghosted me. Terrible customer service. read more

the chocolate cupcakes are delicious and consistently moist. the carrot cake was a bit dry but the cream cheese frosting delicious.

You seriously HAVE TO try the Meyer Lemon Raspberry Cake! I purchased 2 but should've purchased the lot!! Service is always so excellent and the cake is just DELISH!! read more

Our go-to cake for birthdays and occasionally "just because" is their Mom's Chocolate Layer Cake. It is so chocolatey, so moist, just utterly delicious. Our local Farmer Joe's in Oakland stocks them, but you can find these cakes in many supermarkets in the Bay Area. We also love Rubicon's mission of giving people a second chance. read more

Looking for a breakfast item I came across these muffin/cupcakes at my little local grocery and thought I'd try them out. Apparently they are available at a number of grocery stores and supermarkets. There were a few choices and I opted for the carrot with yogurt. They are delicious- smooth, moist and creamy. Very tasty, indeed. The carrot taste is subtle and doesn't bowl you over like with some carrot cakes. The only quibble I have is that they are a bit sweet and sugary tasting. The filling is a nice change from an ordinary muffin, so I was quite pleased. Now I'm open to trying some of their other products. read more

My friend bought their chocolate cake from Safeway for someone's birthday and wow the first bite was shockingly good! Sorry Safeway, haven't been super impressed with your cakes, but this one is a different caliber! Moist, rich, decadent chocolate will knock the socks off your taste buds without being overly sweet. We looked up this company and it's such a good cause giving second chances to those in need. Will be supporting them more often and trying other products! read more

So delicious! I buy their cupcakes at Target- $5.99 for 4. The chocolate cream filled cupcakes are a fancier version of the Hostess ones. The carrot cake cupcakes are my favorite. Some of the best Lemon Cakes around the SF Bay Area. My local Safeway store at Diamond Heights in San Francisco never orders enough of the Rubicon Lemon cakes. They are so much better then the new reduced sized 'Just Dessert' lemon cakes . Ask for them at your local store. Very hard to find sometimes in stock as they go fast after delivery! read more

Rubicon Bakery puts out a quality cupcake, leaving out many of the inferior ingredients too often found in similar baked goods. Regrettably, there are only three varieties available in my area but Rubicon management has informed me that more flavors are on the way in about a month and a half. Of the flavors I tried, Chocolate Cream, Confetti Birthday and Red Velvet, the Red Velvet is the only one I'd personally eat again. I buy them all because my wife enjoys all three varieties. The reason Red Velvet is my top choice is not for reasons one might think. There's not quite enough cocoa powder in the recipe to declare the cake authentically Red Velvet. However, the Red Velvet cupcakes have a pronounced vanilla flavor, even more so than the Confetti Birthday. Because of this, any time I can snag a box of the Red Velvet I do so with delight. Also, I find the Red Velvet slightly more moist than the Chocolate Cream or the Confetti Birthday. Consumers should be aware that the product is shipped frozen. Retailers are responsible for thawing the cupcakes and applying the price stickers with the correct expiration dates prior to placing the product on the store shelves. According to a Rubicon staff member, the cupcakes, whether refrigerated or not, have a recommended shelf life of 5 days. There is a Julian date stamped on the side of each box that will inform prospective purchases about the date the cupcakes were baked, packaged and frozen. read more

This review is solely for the product. I haven't been to the location listed. Cupcakes, chocolate, lemon and red velvet were bought from Rubicon Bakery for an office birthday. Lemon is my favorite so I chose lemon. I swiped my finger across the frosting to taste that first. OMG. So much flavor in one little swipe. (to self: Was that a speck of lemon zest i just saw?) I proceed to bite the cupcake. OMG, lemon filling too!?!?!? It was simply the bomb. Moist & flavorful. So good I went back for red velvet. Also the bomb. Moist & flavorful. Better than almost any other red velvet I've tried in the bay area. Rubicon has earned my business!!!!.... Sorry, devoured the lemon before i could get a picture. read more

The best cupcakes I've ever had! I love their red velvet cupcakes filled with cream cheese frosting. Truly amazing and totally addicting. Randomly ended up having some at a super bowl party a couple of weeks ago and had to track them down to a whole foods in brooklyn. Highly recommend!! read more

My son brought these home from Whole Foods and we were excited to have yummy cake for dessert... I spit out my first bite. It was the birthday cake one. Then I hesitantly tried a smaller bite of the lemon one. I swallowed that one, but I wasn't pleased. Husband ate his slice but he wasn't pleased either. Yuck. I can't even describe the taste. The cake is not moist or flavorful at all. It tastes like diet cake or something? But I just looked at the ingredients and you should be able to make something that tastes good out of sugar and unbleached flour... and they didn't. read more

My friend kept telling me about these intense lemon cupcakes. She brought one to me the other day. For people who LOVE lemon, these lemon cupcakes are exceptional. Moist cupcake filled with the best tasting lemon curd. The only problem is after having the one I really wanted, needed, more. I spent most of the day yesterday going from one Whole Foods to another as my friend said that was the only place that ever had any. I went to five Whole Food locations. San Mateo, Redwood City, Palo Alto, etc. No one had any. Then an employee from the Palo Alto Whole Foods talked to the bakery section manager who told us the lemon cupcake has been discontinued. NO! It can happen just as I've discoverd them. RUBICON BAKERY...PLEASE BRING THE LEMON CUPCAKES BACK! read more

Synopsis: Sacrificed my modeling career for their cupcakes Dets.: I've tried to resist the temptation. Believe me, I've tried. But I'm only flesh and blood, and they say the flesh is weak. Mom's Chocolate Cake is the best grocery store bought cake, good value unless the store you buy it at jacks up the price (looking at you Mollie Stones). Buy it from Safeway for the best prices. I haven't been to the bakery but I've had the triple lemon cupcakes from Whole Foods a bunch of times now. Honestly, those cupcakes are the best cupcakes I've had in a minute. I want to support Rubicon Bakery. Their stuff looks delicious, the ingredients look honest, and I support their social mission, but for me and many others with whom I've spoken, the obscene amount of plastic packaging is a non-starter. I know it is probably much more efficient for them to use strong plastic containers, but that's most definitely not the way to "bake a better world." The world is already drowning in single-use plastics. Perhaps they could figure out a way to use cardboard boxes with see-through tops? Still plastic, but much less. Looking forward to that day. read more

Bought the chocolate cream cupcakes from Ralph's on clearance. First bite was great. After the second bite I started tasting the aftertaste of FISH! Thought it may have been all in my head so I had my son taste. Nope, he tasted the fishy aftertaste as well. I'm not sure if it was just this particular batch of cupcakes, or what. I'll never buy them again, though. Gross. read more

Most AMAZING Chocolate cake that has ever touched my lips!!!! Someone shoot me, I could not stop! This is definitely a dangerous habit in development. Not only do they use all-natural bakery products from scratch but all proceeds support the non-profit Rubicon Programs, a leader in community development. How awesome is that? Indulge on dessert knowing you are helping individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area overcome economic and social hurdles. Who can ask for more???? Now you don't have to feel all that guilty when you are stuffing your mouth with 210 calories of sinfulness! You can purchase on line or through their retail locations. Both my husband and I absolutely love the carrot cake and also the chocolate cake. Just couple days ago bought another small size of the carrot cake from Oakland Wholefoods and we devoured it same day between the two of us hahaha. This cake is not your usual greasy buttery loaded with frosting - it feels like homemade cake and I should know because i'm a homebaker :) I can taste the nutmeg and cinnamon, the cake texture is lovely and moist and we both love that the frosting is not that heavy and not that much on the cake. It's definitely our weekly treat! I was amazed to read about who makes the cakes in this bakery and now I know what makes these cakes so delicious - HOPE this bakery brings to its employees. Much love to all the staff! read more
