However, response times were inconsistent, especially during weekends or depending on the time of day. 1 star for overall communication experience when it came to finalizing the order. There were no clear instructions on how to make a payment or any timeline for placing the order. It felt like they weren't interested in securing the sale. A simple follow-up or closing question could've made the difference and helped move things forward. That's the minimum expectation in customer service. I was genuinely excited to place an order, but this experience was extremely disappointing. Because of that, I felt it warranted knocking off a star. This is just my personal experience, but I'd still say--if you plan to order, be clear, be prepared, and place your order well in advance.

I asked to see her menu, and she pointed out a freshly-baked German Chocolate Cake that she had on table, and that was enough for me to place an order for that same cake. I picked up my German Chocolate Cake on Christmas Eve, and we just had it for Christmas dinner. We all (my family and my sister and her family) agreed that it was the best German Chocolate Cake that we have ever put in our mouths. It was OUTSTANDING! Sooo moist, with great coconut and pecan flavor, but not the overwhelming sweetness that can often be the downfall of other German chocolate cakes. It was a big 10-inch, 4-layer cake, frosted between the layers, top, and sides for a "whopping" $25 -- it was a steal -- and could easily go for $10 more in a bakery. Besides the German Sweet Chocolate Cake, El Wanda also makes a wide variety of other cakes, mostly in what I would call the comfort category: 7-Up Cake, Red Velvet Cake, Rum Cake, Banana Layer Cake, and more! And it's all baked fresh, right from her home! I live in San Francisco, and El Wanda is in Richmond, but I would gladly make the drive over again for any of El Wanda's cakes (and her Mary Kay stuff). I'm currently boycotting that national pink and brown chain with the number of flavors for some extraordinarily rude service in the neighboring town. I had currently supported a local ice cream shop over in El Portal and was satisfied. I didn't want to go that far so I remembered Destenny's which is near where I live. Quaint small shop. Kudos for re-imagining a small space for a local business. Not many flavors but a good quality product in Mitchell's. The lady was very nice in making my split. She went out of her way to accommodate my need to transport my split in a container. My only issue is the split and a Red Bull came to $20 (plus apparently $1.50 for using a card). I didn't trip and immediately paid it. Now the split was awesome. But I got home and was like waiminute...$20?? The split from the other local place was $9 plus tax. The chain woulda been $7 plus. Was the split $15 and the Red Bull $5? Was the split $10 and the Red Bull $10. Ironically, I was contemplating going to Safeway and getting the fixings myself but ultimately decided naw, I don't need to spend that much, plus remember, we're supporting local. I'm originally from SF and when I first saw that there was a place to get my favorite ice cream I couldn't pass up on it. I love taking my parents to get their favorite flavors of ice cream without having to go far!! They have an amazing selection of treats from amazing drinks, to dessert like candied grapes and pineapples, mini pancakes, Dubai strawberries and ice cream hands down they have it all!!
