I always love Cupcakin'. I particularly like this location because this part of Shattuck is less chaotic than Telegraph up by Cal. They also have a small parking lot exclusively for customers which I just found out after my umpteenth visit. LOL! I purchased the Crème Brûlée cupcake for a friend who reviewed the crème brûlée topping as "not too sweet" and noted that the sugar still had a bit of crisp to it. The frosting on the Lemon Blackberry cupcake is sooooo delicious, but I was disappointed but the innards due to an absence of any blackberry filling. And then when I got to the BOTTOM of the cupcake, I found a flattened blackberry in the center. I suppose they get an A for effort on that one... As for the Key Lime Pie and Vanilla Salted Caramel cupcakes, I've had them multiple times before and they're so tasty. They're really good at what they do here. Unfortunately, if you don't get there early, you won't get to grab any of the limited/exclusive flavors they sometimes have; I missed out on the latest Banana Pudding cupcake and it still keeps me up at night... Ultimately, I don't have the heart to rate any less than 5 stars. Their cupcakes are so delicious, soft, and moist every time. One of my dessert pet peeves is dry cake--I can't stand a dry or underdressed cake. Cupcakin' makes sure I don't have to suffer. Great food/baked goods, great customer service, in a quaint ambiance is how I can describe my favorite cupcake bakery! I walked in as soon as they opened, and secured my favorite flavors, and a new one. First, the Dubai Chocolate cupcake is prepared perfectly. The pistachio cream inside of a rich chocolate cupcake, with a combination of pistachio and chocolate on top with candied pistachios to finish it off. Every bite is heavenly! I also tried the Lemon Blackberry cupcake, which is a flavor of the month. I love new and exciting flavors, this one was pretty good. I would've preferred a lemon blueberry (which I would love to see on the menu regularly) but this was good nonetheless. Another favorite is the Chocolate Salted Caramel cupcake. For the past 30 years, I have apparently been training for a very specific title: cupcake connoisseur. This is why people stop buying their cupcakes out and choose to make stuff at home. This place really knows how to disappoint! And I find it amazing because a substandard shop around the corner is selling crap and while these people have a much better product with much more flavor, they never seem to have it in stock. I go in and I see that they have cupcakes and I'm looking for a gluten-free cupcake. Whatever the flavor they have if it's gluten-free, I will take it. I have absolutely no idea why they don't have these cupcakes. A couple of times I showed up close to closing and they didn't have the cupcakes and I understand that you know they may have sold out. But I've been there 10 minutes after opening, a half hour after opening, an hour or two after opening and no cupcakes. I have been there in the middle of the day and no cupcakes! The people do have plenty of excuses. There is the time I went there and now I do not have cupcakes. I was ignored the whole time I was waiting. There was a time I went there and the person who was supposed to be working was in the bathroom probably taking the dump because there's a sign on the door saying that they were in the restroom. I waited longer than I should have for that to find out there were no gluten-free cupcakes. This was 1/2 hour into their shift and when I went in there, they already did not have any gluten-free cupcakes. Here's the problem, don't advertise if you have something if you don't have it on a regular basis. You go to the website they show you the muffins there's always a gluten-free flavor. The last four times I've been there they have not had gluten-free cupcakes. I don't know why. I came by in the morning to get some cupcakes and they didn't have them. And if they run out of cupcakes that early that means they're not making enough. But clearly they do not care and now I no longer care. This place is nice and clean and it has a great ambience, and they have a lot of cute things to buy. But I did not come by for any of that stuff. I came by for a gluten-free cupcake and on that small ass they didn't even bother to have any. Today, I was told that they may have a day old cupcake in the back. Of course they didn't have one because that makes no sense. They had all the old stuff out waiting and for some reason, I'm supposed to think that their day old sitting in the back. I do not know why these people do not have enough product, I really don't, but I'm done I'm making my cupcakes at home.!!! Normally, I came by here once or twice a month for a cupcake when I was in the area. Now all I've gotten on the times I've been here is disappointment. This bakery makes the bomb mini cupcakes. We enjoyed all of these as our dessert for a birthday dinner party. I have to say, without a doubt, it was a huge success. That they were sold out--yo there were still cupcakes on display. I attempted to make a phone call and much to my disgust, there was an outgoing voice message. Was quite disappointed that a human being could not be bothered to pick it up. When I walked by the door again, the sign said, sold out closed early. They were closing two hours before the official closing time. Guess they were short staffed. Next time, if you're closing early, could you please put the cupcakes that are on display away? These cupcakes are hands down, the best I've EVEEERRRR had!!!!!! I've been a fan of Cupcakin' since their first shop opened on Telegraph Ave in Berkeley. I hated that location because of the parking situation, but braved through it each time. Busy area for sure, but definitely worth it each time. I was ecstatic once they opened up this location on Shattuck. Parking is super easy, they even have a few spots reserved behind the building for their customers. They have so many delicious flavors to pick from. But my ultimate favorite, hands down, is the key lime. That crust at the bottom of the cupcake is to die for and was such a great surprise the first time I tried it. I also love their red velvet. Typically, im not a fan of red velvet because I can usually taste the dye, but not this one, theirs is perfectly moist and delicious. The mini cupcakes are a nice option if you want to try a bunch of different flavors. We usually order Cupcakin' for birthday celebrations within our family. We love it so much that we ordered a bunch of minis for our dessert table at our wedding. Placing an order online is easy, and picking up is even easier. I needed a variety of cupcakes for my daughter's birthday. Something simple for my little one and a few with different flavors for everyone else. After searching around I decided on Cupcakin' Bake Shop and was on the hunt on which location to visit during my short lunch break. Fortunately, this location has easy street parking at 10 (when they open) and I was able to run in, order, and run out. The place is clean with a TON of variety. I wanted to order the mini cupcakes for extra variety but opted on getting regular sized ones since they didn't have a small box for the mini cupcakes. For my order of 6 mini cupcakes they'd be placed in a regular box without the cupcake holders and I didn't want to risk ruining them. The service was nice and they had a few stationary items for parties located in the corner - however, limited. The cashier said that they expect a delivery of more birthday sparklers in the near future since they were out of the number 4. The cupcakes were delicious, moist, and full of flavor. Haven't been here in a while so after a rough day I decided get a treat. Came in and was greeted right away by the young lady behind the counter. The store is nicely decorated. Everything looked so good I didn't know what you were pick. I decided to try the chocolate chip cookie it was very good. I had the key lime mini cupcake for the first time. It was so delicious. I regret not buying a full sized one or two. I also tried the salted caramel mini it was also very good I should have gone regular size on that too. TERRIBLE customer service. I went there this past Sunday to get two dozen cupcakes for my office. When I walked in, there was no one out front, but I could hear someone in the back. I called out hello and got no response. So I waited and waited and still heard nothing, and then someone else came in the store. I still heard the person in the back rattling around, so I looked and I could see someone putting things on different shelves in the back and I said hello., and I got a pretty surly "I'll be there". I didn't get a "sorry for the wait, what would you like?" I just got this surly expression. So I told her what I wanted, and she gathered them up and put them in the box with a grumpy expression on her face. She rang them up, and didn't say thank you, didn't say anything. Just walked away to help the next customer. For a place that charges nearly $5 a cupcake you would think they would actually hire someone with a good personality. Maybe the management is terrible who knows, but don't take it out on the customers. I've been to the one on telegraph and they're much nicer there. I've been to all of the Cupcakin' locations and realized that I shamefully haven't reviewed this one yet, even though it's the one that I usually pick up my big orders from! I gotta hand it to this awesome black woman-owned business (you go Lila Owens!) for absolutely killin' it in the Bay Area dessert world. I have no doubt she can take her craft anywhere and everyone would love it. Just as long as the Bay Area locations stay! :) I have placed and picked up some big orders here for my wedding, my bff's kids' and MIL's bdays and it has been a success each time. Ordering online via their events request form was easy and they got back to me promptly and answered all my questions, especially about customization. Payment is made online and pick up location and time are confirmed via email. Upon pickup, the friendly staff reviews and confirms my order, by showing the baked goods and having me sign for it. Super professional and excellent customer service! Of course, everyone loved the moist, flavorful cupcakes and cake. FYI - their 6 in cake feeds around 10 ppl- we got a double chocolate one and it was more than enough for 8 of us. I'm really irritated at this point. I drove 30 minutes to grab an order, waited until they completed with a customer before one of the sales associates spoke to me. I let her know that I was here to pick up a Too Good to Go order (for which I still had u til 6 pm to pick it up, it is currently a little after 2pm). She looked a bit confused, asked me again and I repeated what I had initially said. She then stated that all of those orders had been claimed for the day. I was then left confused as I still had a pending order to pick up. She just repeated they were all gone. It was a very awkward conversation. Nothing else. No apologies, no attempts to fix (they even had day old cupcakes set out), nothing. So my only resort was to get a refund, which I still have to wait to receive. Very disappointing and frustrating. They basically gave my order to another customer. A complete waste of time. The only good thing about this experience was that I found out they had a parking lot for customers, so I did not have to pay for street parking.
