He was always so generous with samples and had good vibes. I was happy when I heard about the new store on Lakeshore but when I saw BBQ, I knew I had to try it soon. Everything looked and smelled amazing. My favorites were the lamb and brisket. The tangy and mildly spicy bbq sauce was sooo good with it. The lamb was the most tender and delicious tasting I've ever had. The Mac and cheese also tasted like queso and was delicious. And those latkes were perfectly crisp and cooked, especially with their cinnamon filled applesauce. The whole meal was so satisfying. We will definitely be back. Went for the first time on a Friday and had to go back three days later because I woke up with their latkes on my mind. That should tell you something. Lunch was next level -- brisket and lamb, both ridiculously good. And the sides weren't afterthoughts; they were some of the stars of the show. My bro and I left happy as hell. But let's talk about breakfast. Three days after that first trip, I woke up thinking about those latkes -- crispy as hell on the outside, perfectly done inside, with sour cream and applesauce. So I went back specifically for those and somehow ended up having two of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Not "really good for the price." Just ridiculously good. My text to my bro after eating them pretty much says it all. My one tiny adjustment next time: I'll ask them to go light on the aioli. It was a little heavy for my taste, but that's completely in my control and sure as hell wasn't enough to keep me from destroying both sandwiches. Five stars remain intact. How there isn't a line down the block for this place, I don't know. Just know what kind of place you're going to: the setup is casual and no-frills. You order at the counter, they call your order, paper plates and plasticware, booth seating and some outside seating. Friendly, laid-back, Oakland BBQ/diner kind of vibes. And the prices are pretty damn reasonable, especially for food this good. The eclectic menu is just one expression of Ben's passion for this place. It has the things he loves to make and share, and new items come up all the time, as he experiments with new items. I can't touch all of them but I can tell you that the Big Three don't miss. Get yourself a brisket sandwich (on the pillowy challah roll) with a latke on the side (served with *both* sour cream and apple sauce) and a cheesecake for dessert (def start with the ube flavored one). Each one is well executed, but more important than any flavor is the care that goes into them. You sense that Ben wanted to get the crisp on the latkes just so, before sharing them with the town. The space itself is a big part of the joy as well. If you had your own shop, what would you paint on the walls? I heard about Crazy Block from Instagram. I love barbecue and had to check them out. I ordered the Beef Rib plate that comes with two bones and two sides. I selected collard greens and corn bread. Found this place through social media and it immediately went on my must try list. Parking in the area is pretty easy, I snagged street parking right across the street without any trouble. The service was quick and super friendly and I even got to meet the owner who was genuinely warm and welcoming. Always a good sign when the owner is present and engaged. I ordered the combo plate with brisket, ribs, coleslaw and mac and cheese and everything was outstanding. The mac and cheese is an absolute must, incredibly creamy and the kind of side dish that steals the show. The brisket and ribs were exactly what you want from a BBQ spot. "Boozie sent us" Lol We found this place on TikTok from BoozieBrunch. We came for the Dino Ribs but they only sell them on certain days (Friday, Saturday and Sundays?) I remember when Crazy Block Cheesecake used to be based in Alameda and I think at the time they only had cheesecakes, but now they have all kinds of BBQ and even latkes! The owner has absolutely perfected the craft of a good cheesecake. The first time I had a cheesecake from here was when they were still in Alameda and I bought a TooGoodToGo surprise bag from them. I got lucky and ended up with a medium cheesecake and a mini one. I talked about the cheesecakes regularly but hadn't gone back. This past weekend, they celebrated their one year anniversary at their storefront in Oakland. The owner has created such a vibe with vibrant paintings in and around the restaurant and they even had karaoke all day long for their anniversary. They should honestly have it every weekend. I could totally see myself going regularly with friends to just have bbq + cheesecake and vibe out with some karaoke. I ordered the Ube Buko Pandan Cheesecake and the Gulab Jamun Cheesecake, mini for each of them. I was worried that the Gulab Jamun would be super sweet and overly saturated with the rose flavor, but it was actually perfectly balanced. Every bite had the perfect amount of cheesecake to gulab jamun flavor. The ube buko pandan tasted like it had real ube in it, but maybe I was fooled. Either way, I hope it stays on the menu! We actually stumbled upon Crazy Block Cheesecakes by chance, and before we even made it inside, the owner was standing outside holding a tray with a lamb burger and fries. I also ordered one latke, which came with sour cream and applesauce, and that turned out to be a great call. Everything we tried was flavorful and satisfying. Came here on a Sunday and it wasn't busy. We ordered a pound of lean brisket, a lamb sandwich, and a mini chocolate cheesecake. Everything was so tasty! I asked for lean brisket and it was so juicy and tender even though it was lean. The lamb was also super tender as well. The bun wasn't my favorite personally as it was a bit bland so I only had a bite of it. The bbq sauce was delicious! It wasn't too thick and it was on the sweeter side. I got a Too Good to Go surprise bag from them; thir prep station is far west in Alameda in an industrial area, not the easiest to get to if you don't have a car. My Too Good to Go contained New York, ube, and cookies and cream cheesecakes. It was a good deal for three and I was instructed to eat within next day or two ideally. Ube: had a good amount of ube flavor. It had dark crust- wasn't clear if that part was ube or a general cookie flavor from taste. Cookies and cream: texture tasted surprisingly like cake and not cheesecake to me compared to the other flavors, so probably my least favorite of all of them, even though I normally do like cookies and cream. New York: I like my cheesecake more sour so I liked that this is sour yet still sweet. The texture is smooth and almost reminds me of pudding or flan, unlike some cheesecakes that are more cakey. Never knew that I could get good BBQ, crispy Latkes and cheesecakes all in one place, but that's what I found at Crazy Block Cheesecake on our Sunday visit on Lakeshore Avenue. The smoked brisket was incredibly tender and juicy. The Latkes were perfectly crisp and came with the traditional sour cream and applesauce. Loved that the walls were covered with anime and pop culture murals. I don't like cheesecakes much so sorry I don't have any input on them, but they do have a very good variety and one I was willing to try was the Ube. We ordered a Dino Rib, some brisket, Mac n cheese and a Praline Cheesecake. The beef was tender and the middle had good flavor. The rub crust was hard and a bit overpowering so I cut the crust off. Although we ordered the fatty brisket it seemed more lean than moist. The Mac n cheese was over the top delicious. The Praline Cheesecake tasted like it had alcohol which isn't something we normally eat. We will go back and try some of the other dishes along with some Mac n cheese. Wow, I never knew about this hidden gem. I honestly never walk that far down lakeshore ave. My friend got me the mini original cheesecake, and wow I was impressed how crunchy the crust was. Even though I ate it a few days later, it was pleasantly more filling than I anticipated. It was super creamy filling and the bottom was super crunchy. This review is solely for the OG NY cheesecake (haven't tried anything else). A friend brought it over for an evening dinner we hosted. The cheesecake filling is smooth and creamy, not too sweet, but still the rich cheesecake filling you expect. The crust is very interesting - not the traditional graham cracker crust. There is something in the crust that makes it stand out, it's sweet, a little sticky - the kind that sticks to your teeth; almost like a toffee. I loved their cheese cake from the San Leandro farmers market. There are many flavors and sizes. The problem I have is the back seating. Random ppl in the neighborhood are so entitled that they will sit there with their outside food and just make their phone calls to block the booth so you are trapped. So my experience was not good because an otherwise empty booth where I could go through was not available to walk through because of the entitled neighbor hood people. So I don't recommend sitting at the back booth. I had to stand in line longer because I had to go around that entitled thing because by the time I got to the line , everybody had beat me.
