A cute lil Asian bakery. I've been to a handful of these and this one is pretty standard. A great spot to grab and go some Asian baked goods. They have the trays and tongs where you can pick some stuff up. Once you're done, you can go into the line to pay and there are a bit more things you can choose from. We were excited to order some of the cream puffs that they had for a special price but unfortunately, they didn't have any when we got there. Pretty standard Asian bakery. I stopped by to pick up some pastries to bring to my friend's home Saturday evening around 6 pm. I was afraid the selection wouldn't be great because it was so late in the day, but I was pleasantly surprised that plenty of buns were still available. I got: Vanilla sponge roll ($9.99) Bag of pineapple cakes ($6.40) Pineapple custard bun ($2.50) Custard brioche bun ($2.09) Red bean bun ($2.19) Paper cup cake ($2.20) I didn't get a chance to try everything, but most of what I did try were just okay but nothing amazing. The sponge roll was on the dry side imo, and I found the pineapple cake dry too. I prefer the pineapple cakes I can get at the grocery store. Probably my favorite of everything I tried was the red bean bun, as they put plenty of red bean paste in the filling and it really hit the spot. Quality/Quantity - Okay, time for an update. I/we have gotten over the first review with poor service; well almost over, lol. This is our go-to location for pastry snacks, mainly for convenience. And they make good travel snacks. I like the fact that you have weekly specials, see pictures. We get random snacks/pastries every time we are here, but almost always get an egg tart or two; my daughter's favorite. Not a favorite from here, but her favorite pastry is egg tarts. Atmosphere - Small to-go bakery. Counter seating, that I have never seen anyone use. I think the city of SL might have made them put that in, but then where is the public restroom...? Plenty of mall parking, hence the convenience. Plus I am here often shopping the other businesses, New Sang Chong Market, Poke Star, Mings Donuts, Baby Cafe, etc. Service - Counter service. The team can STILL be much more friendly. Price - Reasonable; but again, we are paying for convenience. I love going here for chinese baked goods. This store is a chain and has other locations around the bay area. I usually come after work but they are open early in the morning as well. Alot of the options are limited since they are closing but they always have my custard and pineapple buns there. I think the price is fair and worth it. We love this place and was so happy to see it much closer by in San Leandro! Used to drive out from Alameda to the Albany or Union City locations. It's so difficult to have their cocktail buns to be stocked on time. They open at 7:30am, I usually get there 15 min after 9am, half of the stuff is not even out..that's really inconvenient for customers if you can't get stuff in stock at 1.5 hours after opening. The prices are about the same as 85. They should really work on getting their inventories ready in a timely manner. This shopping center is at the crossroads of Doolittle Drive & Fairway Drive, and down the street from Kaiser Hospital @ San Leandro. This is a small store, with all the assorted baked goods and decorated cakes. They also serve coffee, tea, and milk tea. There's no "sit down" cafe area. There's a standing bar for customers to enjoy their drinks and snacks. I was there on a Saturday evening at 6pm. Sheng Kee is in the same small building as the Subway and Round Table Pizza. Free Parking in lot. As you enter, they will have the familiar tray and tongs. All baked goods are packaged. I looked over the decorated cakes, and thought they were a bit pricey. When it was time to pay, I stepped up to the counter and an older lady helped me. She didn't seem to speak fluent English, but knew enough to give me the total and point to my credit card and smile. So excited there's a Sheng Kee Bakery so close to home! Out of all the self-serve Asian bakery chains, Sheng Kee has to be my favorite and it's what I grew up on. They serve all your classic pastries and the quality I feel is pretty consistent. One stand out was the butterfly cookie, which I was was pleasantly surprised by how flakey it was, like it was just baked from the oven. The shop is small, but it's for a quick grab-n-go ordeal. There's a long bar table at the entrance of the store, but it's not much of a seating area. The only thing knocking this review of one star is the Hong Kong style milk tea. This plaza gets pretty busy and packed, especially on the weekends because of the market and many eateries / restaurants here, so parking may be hit or miss depending on when you stop by. Not much service, this is mainly a self-service spot, if you want breads; buns; pastries; etc., then just grab a tray and a set of tongs to pick your choices and bring it to the counter to pay. They also have drinks available, coffee and boba drinks - fruit and milk teas. Honestly, I came here for a grass jelly milk tea, but I guess they had taken it off their menu. I opted for their Classic Milk Tea with boba - I ordered it with 50% sweetness and the drink was still overly sweet. They also do not have the big chubby / jumbo boba cups like I had at their other locations. The bread isn't as puffy and soft as the Daly City location. The chocolate which covered the bread was very little and so the cream. I might do a little commute and satisfy my taste bud. I love how this plaza has a bakery now! My parents frequent this shopping plaza to buy groceries and pastries to avoid shopping at Oakland Chinatown. Upon arrival, there are trays and tongs for you to grab your favorite Chinese pastries. The store is clean and all the pastries are wrapped individually so you don't have to worry about other people's germs on your baos. I came here on a Sunday night before closing so they didn't have a wide selection as they normally do. The parking lot is huge so you can always find a spot to park. Compared to other Sheng Kee's in the Bay Area, this one is smaller and the baker needs a little more training because many of the baked items, i.e. apple turnovers, are overcooked and somewhat burnt. I went in one time about an hour after they opened and they didn't have any of the displayed pastries, i.e. mini cakes, available, along with half of the usual pastries of the other Sheng Kees. I asked if they have any of the mini cakes in the back and the lady said they were out. How could you be out when you just opened? Even though it's closer than the Union City location, I will be going to Union City for the pastries. The store front isn't that big, but there are a variety of baked breads and desserts, including whole fruit cakes. There are trays and tongs for you to pick up the breads, but everything is already individually packaged. I ordered a few buns including pineapple bun, cream bun, and some small cakes. The buns were pretty soft. I liked the mango mousse cake, but I'd pass on the green tea cake. Everything was alright but nothing mindblowing.
