Ones is a very cute and solid neighborhood cafe. It's on a a corner of the boulevard with its own parking lot which is convenient. It's small with some outdoor seating available. The pastries are beautiful and well made. My favorites were the sesame filled and pistachio filled ones. Overall they were tasty but I wish they had more filling to them. They were tasty and flaky, but honestly I've had croissants from other places that were flakier and I like mine with made with a little more butter. What I really liked that I was pleasantly surprised with was the iced sesame latte. It had a nice roasted, earthy taste with some sweetness to it. I wish I ordered the bigger size of it! Service was quick and efficient. There was one person behind the register who also made my drink. I will probably come back if I'm in the area!
I've had this place bookmarked for the longest time since everyone raved about it on social media. I wanted to see what the hype was all about so decided to stop by on a Sunday morning around 9 AM. I was puzzle surprised when I saw that there wasn't a line. They had a good variety of selection so it was a little hard for me to decide what to get. I ordered three pastries. Ube Moon - way too much ube inside, so I had to toss some out. Almond Croissant - flaky on the outside, but it wasn't warm enough even after they warmed it up. Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Croissant - had high hopes for this one, but it was a bit disappointed. The chicken wasn't warm and I couldn't taste the lemongrass. Glad I was able to check this off my list. They do have unique pastries with great presentation, which I thought was pretty cool. But prices are a bit steep in my opinion. I heard they opened our location in Alameda.
Best overall experience! Customer service was amazing! The people working were so sweet and helpful. The coffee was DELECTABLE! The pastries are not only beautiful, delicious, magnificent, but also so creative and unique! I love them! I get the hype.
If you're thinking about giving a food birthday gift or if you know someone who just needs a food pick-me-up, get a box of pastries for them here! Not only are the pastries some of the prettiest that I've seen but they're actually quite tasty (and not too sweet either)! Comes in a nice branded box too. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. Only a couple of customers in line when I visited on a Sunday early afternoon and the display case was still more-than-half full. Okay-ish service; the lady at the cashier was primarily focused on quickly completing orders.
I love buttery pastries and when I saw the black sesame croissant from this place, I knew I had to drop by. I ordered the black sesame croissant, coffee cream croissant, and the chocolate croissant. The black sesame and coffee croissant were delicious. As for the chocolate croissant, there was barely any chocolate in it so I wouldn't buy that again. In terms of parking, they do have a tiny lot. However, it's a one-way road. In order to get out, you'll have to back your car out of the lot and into the main street.. Fortunately for me, when I was ready to exit the lot, there were only a few cars in the lot so I did a 3-point turn to get out.

They offer a unique fusion of Asian flavors with classic French pastries. ---- Pistachio Kataifi Croissant $9.50 - croissant is filled with kataifi and topped with pistachio cream and crushed pistachios - the croissant itself was a little too salty for me and I think it needs the sweetness of the pistachio cream on top - the croissant was still crispy at room temperature, but tasted better heated up - I would recommend air frying it or rebaking it instead of microwaving it bc the kataifi gets soggy ---- Notes: - parking lot is small - service was really quick and friendly - a nice display case with a wide variety of items and with their prices listed!! ---- Overall: unique flavors, picture perfect pastries, I can't wait for the Alameda location to open up so I can try more of their items and their drinks!
Ones Cafe is truly an East Bay gem. You can stretch the definition of "hole in the wall" with this place because 2/3 of the bake shop is the kitchen and 1/3 is the display/ordering area. Making it a bit cramp when you're trying to stand in line, look at what's available, and order at the same time. Parking here is hard to get to as well, the lot is super small and fits only one car at a time. If you happen to land a spot here your best bet is to reverse all the way out because a three point turn will turn into a multipoint turn quickly. My suggestion is to park in the lot in the plaza next door and walk over. As for the baked goods the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Croissant is phenomenal and the Strawberry Moon is a classic. The flavor profiles here lean Asian with many call backs to flavors such as ube and passionfruit. They also seem to change their menu often too so keep an eye out on the newer items as you visit. In terms of aesthetics of the pastries you can see the love in the folds of each one. The strawberry moon croissant is a good example of this because the amount of ridges in the croissant shows how many times it was folded while making it. That alone is back breaking work and truly a labor of love for something that gets consumed in minutes. Last but not least the staff, we love a good mom and pop shop. The entire family is in on this, from the cashier, baristas, and pastry chef. If you're looking for a AAPI business to support, this is the one to go to. They're kind, diligent, and when a pastry sells out you can always count on them to make more. Disappointment does not run in this family! Overall looking forward to continue coming back and frequently be a patron here.
This place specializes in croissants and I ordered 8 different ones with an even split with savory and sweet to take home to my family and we were all able to try a bite of everything. I wish I wrote down what I ordered but luckily, I did take a picture. I ordered: Ham and Cheese, Almond, French Custard, Black Sesame, Passion Fruit Ganache, Cheese and Mushroom, Shrimp, and lastly, a kouign-amann. They also had a pastrami one that I wanted to try but they were sold out. Everything was delicious and buttery, as a croissant should be. Nothing was too sweet nor too salty however, I would recommend pairing it with either a nice cup of coffee or tea. My favorite so far was the cheese and mushroom and the kuign-amann but honestly, you cant go wrong with anything. Price wise, they started around $6 each which, for the quality you are getting, I believe is fairly priced. The staff were all very lively and super friendly. Also, the smell of freshly made croissants is absolutely intoxicating. I will definitely return to try the other items as well as their coffee.
Tried their somewhat new Pastrami Cup pastry. Be sure to have them heat it up and eat it fresh/ASAP! It's like a steak dinner in a pastry. Chunky pastrami, creamy white sauce, rosemary, and a mushroom umami that ties it all together.
I have always been astounded by the beautiful pastries here at Ones, and I finally got to try it. Who knows how long it has been in my saved folder lol.. Though the bakery is pretty small, it was perfectly cozy with plenty outdoor seating available. There are a couple tables outside, and a bar-style seating area outside. Plus, a lot of parking spaces are available! The pastries are displayed beautifully under the warm lights of the shelf. Totally cute! Most importantly.. Instagram worthy! I got two original croissants, an orange creme brulee, and a strawberry crescent croissant. The original croissants were perfectly crunchy, and not too airy that there isn't anything inside the shell. Pretty dense in you ask me, and I love it that way! The orange creme brulee was really pretty. Caught my eye in the crowd! Though I thought that the croissant-style bread on the outside of the pastry was not crispy enough, the creme brulee definitely had a rich orange-y aroma. The strawberry crescent was my absolute favorite. I love how the hard, dense outside contrasted with the creamy center. The strawberry cream in the center isn't too sweet in my opinion! The shape wasn't just creative, it was also so fun to eat! You'll be seeing me again!
I really wanted PIE, but since I couldn't think of any place to get a good fruit pie from in Castro Valley, I "settled" for Ones. Open four days a week and closing at 3pm, we knew that the selection would be sparse since it was already 2:45. Fortunately, everything that we've tried has been good so we knew selection wouldn't be that much of an issue. We got: Croffle with Strawberry Cream - 5 Black Sesame Onigiri Croissant (No Rice Involved) - 5 Passionfruit Ganache Muffin Danish - 5 Kouign Amann - 5 Yes. Four items scoring 5/5 each. Great textures and flavors, well executed individual pastries that only a Master Baker could consistently produce.
OMG! I got the moon shaped strawberry filled croissant and the kitty kat coffee croissant. This place is the real deal. If you want Paris type pastries, check this place out. The filling tasted like real ingredients. I did not know croissants could taste this good. Treat yourself. The staff were all smiles and positive too. Oh and they have tables so you can sit outside and enjoy the weather too.
I found this bakery/café within walkable distance from the Castro Valley Bart station so walked over to meet my friends before our holiday weekend hike. Altogether, I spent around $40 on two rounds of pastries for our early morning carb brekkie. I got a lil over-ambitious getting a bit of everything for us to try, but we only got through about half of the haul (almond and chocolate croissants and egg tart) before the hike. We unanimously agreed the pastries were delicious and would get again if in the area.

One's Cafe is getting quite the buzz out here in the East Bay. They started with a super small one in Castro Valley (the one I visited), but I just recently drove past their newer Alameda location that looks like a bigger space. The Castro Valley one is super tiny, no indoor seating and really only enough room for about 2-3 people to line up to order for the inside. It's a bit too tight in there for me. They do mostly Asian inspired pastries, mostly using croissant dough in all kinds of creative shapes and sizes. Even though many things don't fit my preference as I'm not big on savory pastries or ones that have meat in them, they do make some attractive and unique looking pastries. So I get it, why people line up for this. But I have tried several sweet type pastries and here are some notes. Custard Tart ($4/5*) Probably one of the best egg/custard tarts I've ever had. This is one of the simpler things in their display case. This is literally a flaky pastry and a well made custard filling. Most everything else in that display case is 2-3 times bigger and much more going on with fillings and decorations. I like simple pastries so this hit on my sensibilities big time. The custard was smooth and not too sweet, very Asian in sweetness. And the best part was the crust, it was so flaky, light and buttery. 10 times better than any egg tart I've had a Chinese or Portuguese bakery. Almond Danish ($7.50/3.5*) This is one of their more elaborate creations, even tho this is somewhat simpler than many other pastries they have. But this name doesn't really correlate with what I tasted, there is a lot more going on. The pastry part is in the shape of a muffin, but the texture is flaky like a croissant, maybe slightly more dense than a croissant. Then there may be a small amount of almond paste in the middle, but there were a lot more of this coffee cream. This was too big for me to eat in one sitting so I split it in half. It was decent but it definitely isn't an Almond Danish. Lol Strawberry Croffle ($5/5*) I love true Belgian/Liege waffles made with a yeasted dough but cooked til crisp in a cast iron waffle press. Not sure if this is Liege style but it carried a lot of the characteristics of one. Crisp from caramelized sugar being cooked in the exterior, nice chew in the center and garnished simply with a strawberry cream. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Cold Brew ($4.25/3.5*) I didn't love it, but it wasn't bad. It tasted better if drunk with one of their pastries. Alone I wouldn't do it again. But as a companion with a pastry, sure. I'll round to a fiver cuz service is usually pretty nice and efficient. And even tho 75% of the things here are too busy and complicated for me, the simple things I have tried, really schmacks. So a fandom has formed. read more

This is the second time we've made a visit in less than a month and it's always bustling with a line and wait for food. We tried the chicken tikka masal both times and the first time was good, but the second time it was made even better. We had a croissant that was decent and a tuna avocado that was also okay. The kouignn amann was also allright. The verdict is come for the chicken tikka masala bun! I am still intrigued by the remaining of the huge selection they have. read more

Everything we tried was delicious. The ube moon, matcha croffle, and French tart were all on point--great flavors and not overly sweet. The sesame latte paired perfectly with everything, and the lemongrass chicken croissant was flavorful and super satisfying. Service was friendly and smooth. The storefront itself is small and cozy. Parking right out front can be tight, but there's a larger parking lot in the neighboring shopping center that makes it easier. Overall, a great spot and an easy 5/5. Would definitely come back. read more
Just learned about this bakery and I'm here to try it for the first time first time! Honestly the spread of pastries they have is impressive; though the selection is not as vast as some bigger bakeries, the appearance is very professional and the size is big. From the classic croissants to creations such as pineapple kouign amann and ube moon, the choices can accommodate most guests. I bought ube moon, ham/cheese croissant, choco croissant, lemongrass chicken croissant, pineapple kouign amann, and strawberry croffle; and drinks I got ube latte, black sesame latte, and chai latte. I know that's a lot but I have 3 kids lol. I liked all the pastries especially the lemongrass chicken and ube moon. The pastries have nice crunchy exteriors and I enjoyed it! As for drinks, the black sesame latter is my favorite as it has a bold flavor and a nice balance of coffee and sesame. My least favorite is the ube latte cuz it lacks depth and not worth the price. The bakery is small but clean. There are some chairs and tables outside that guests can use. The prices of the items are reasonable for most. I will likely visit again to try other items. read more
Saw this viral bakery on Instagram and got to check it out. The location is in prime downtown area of Castro valley. We got there 30 mins before closing and was surprised that they still had a lot of options left. There were a lot that I was curious about, but we ended up going with the lemongrass chicken croissant and pistachio croissant. Lemon grass was very delicious. It was chicken thigh and seasoned very well. I wish the chicken was shredded because there were bites that didn't have chicken in it. Pistachio croissant is filled with pistachio cream. I liked it alot and would recommend trying this. Coffee selection was limited at the end of the day. The orange latte was very good. Love this spot and everyone should try One's Cafe! read more

I've been wanting to try this bakery for awhile now after seeing it on social media! My boyfriend went once around noon to try and pick up some pastries for me, but almost everything had sold out! This time, I came around 9am and was glad there were still some options left! This is a small cafe located in downtown Castro valley. Parking is a little weird- there's a small lot that only goes one way, but there's no outlet. There was a small line when I went and a few people seated outside enjoying their coffee and pastries. I got the almond croissant, strawberry and ube moon croissants and a passion fruit muffin danish. Everything was delicious! The moon croissants seemed to be the lost popular because I was able to snag the last three! The croissants were crispy and flaky on the outside with a good amount of filling inside. The moon croissants were probably my favorite of the bunch, but overall everything tasted fresh and delicious! If you're wanting to try out this bakery, come early! read more
My review is middle of the road. I dropped by this Friday morning, 8:30am. Parking is wonky. My three point turnaround skills came in handy. I walked into the bakery and did a once-over of what was available. Instantly spotted some options. The bakery display is really tall. I am not tall. One of the servers warmly greeted the Spanish speaking patrons that walked in after me-She probably knew them? We were all meandering our picks. I finally stepped in front of the register and asked if we were supposed to place our orders behind the thick plexiglass or order at the front. There were two young persons in the front that said either way would work. I was not greeted or welcomed, so I was confused. I placed my order for three pastries, it came out to be over $23. I did not add a tip, as I don't feel like placing three pastries in a box is warranted a tip. The pastries were good. I got the egg and potato croissant, pastrami and cheese, and a ham and cheese croissant. I felt like being greeted and acknowledged was a very basic thing to do in creating a great experience. Niche businesses need to realize this. Why did the donut business down the street become an icon in this town for decades? Because the people behind the counter loved the people coming in. Really cool hidden pastry spot in Castro Valley. They have a very cool selection of pastries with some unique Asian flavors. I enjoyed them all, the flavor were great throughout. The cream filled ones were light and not too sweet. The only thing I have bad to say is that parking is super small and limited at their lot. You're better off parking across the street at Safeway and walking over. Other than that 10/10 spot! read more

This is a cute cafe with a small interior but with plenty of outdoor seating. They have a ton of delicious pastry on display. I happened to try the French pastry which was like an egg tart and it didn't disappoint. With the pastry, I got an iced black sesame latte. I've tried black sesame lattes at other cafes and it's generally one of my go to options, if it's available. However, I felt that mine was lacking in flavor, maybe it had too much milk. As always though, I'm always open to trying other menu options in the future, especially since the staff were super friendly and the ambience was cozy. read more
Wow, this place exceeded my expectations! We drove by this little corner shop in Castro Valley so many times and we finally decided to give it a shot. Yes, the parking lot next to it is a little bit too small but there are so many big lots nearby you can just walk over. The pictures of their bakery goods look so good, and they actually taste just as good as they look. We got the Macha Croffle and it was probably the best thing we've ever had. It doesn't taste artificial, doesn't taste too sweet that it overwhelm the other flavors, and the croffle itself is just the perfect mixture of croissant and a waffle. It was buttery, crispy, and flaky. Definitely will be coming back for the other pastries and so excited to try all of them! read more
Visited on a Friday morning around 8am with a friend, bakery had about 2-3 other groups but not too busy, took about 5min to place our order and 5 minutes for team to warm up and pack our pastries. Food: pastrami stick - solid, pastry had decent lamination with some flakey layers, pastry had 1 slice of pastrami and a little bit of cheese in the long stick, flavors were good but wish this had more filling, pastry also seemed a little lean on butter Passion fruit pastry cream Danish - okay, laminated pastry was slightly dry wished this was a bit more buttery, Danish was filled with a generous amount of pastry cream which had good passion fruit flavor and balanced sweetness but texture was a little heavy on the starch/gelling agent Service was good, warm and friendly, really appreciated that staff was able to warm up the savory pastry we ordered. Overall pastries are okay at ones cafe, had higher hopes and expectations given the high ratings. Personally wouldn't go out of my way to revisit. read more
Ones Café is a quaint little gem that took over Pampas' old spot. While there are plenty of coffee shops in the area, this one stands out for its small-business, artisan vibe. The menu has creative coffee options like ube lattes and orange lattes which unique and refreshing spins that you won't find everywhere in the area. Their pastries are on the pricier side, but you're paying for both the quality and the artistry, each one looks like a work of art and tastes just as good. The almond croissant was perfect: crispy outside, soft and flaky inside. The frangipane filling oozed out when warmed and it was giving a burst of almond cream in every bite. The potato, ham, and egg croissant was a savory masterpiece! It was like an eggs benedict in one buttery pastry. The croissant kept its crisp integrity, the potatoes were tender, the ham had a hollandaise-like coating, and the whole thing was topped with a perfectly cooked over-medium egg. I asked the lady at the register which ones were most popular after I had already ordered and she said that the lemongrass chicken and the moon croissants are big hits. Just a heads up, this place is TINY! So if you plan on coming with a bunch of folks, don't expect to have seating to accommodate that. However,Love their selection of pastries! The strawberry moon & black sesame onigiri is my absolute favorite! The black sesame latte is really good too! This is more of a grab some pastries and take them to go or only come with a couple of people. Either way, they're different and delicious! Just wished there was more space. read more

The matcha here is not good. It is straight milk with a dash of green. I do not recommend. I did like the pastries and bakery items. They weren't too sweet and I enjoyed the savory too! I'd probably get a regular latte next time and the pastries don't miss honestly. read more

This place is a super cute little coffee shop with amazing pastries!! The strawberry moon was my favorite and was the perfect blend of fruity, crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside. My bf got the spicy chicken pastry and it was super juicy which I didn't expect. I got the vanilla latte which I had no complaints about and my bf got the chai latte that he liked as well. Would 100% come back and service was super friendly and fast! read more

OHHHH my gosh SO freaking good, foam is amazing, & the coffee is perfectly strong & not masked by the taste of milk. We came here randomly bc we were craving coffee and we would definitely come back again. Staff is so sweet & friendly and they also made our drink so fast ! 10/10 recommend read more
Located between the Boulevard Pet hospital next to Chevron, and Rowell's Saddlery, taking over pampas old spot -- is a new asian-style woman owned bakery. They've got a dedicated parking lot, but to me, the parking lot isn't really usable unless you've got a scooter or a very small vehicle -- very narrow and difficult/impossible to turn around easily. The bakery itself has a handful of outdoor seating spaces, usually occupied. It's a very small and cozy corner shop, so I assume most of business will be grab-and-go foot traffic. The bakery consists of a small counter of assorted pastries, a small fridge of bottles and cans, and a counter where you can order from a selection of teas, lattes, cocoas. Most of the selection of pastries revolve around laminated dough -- like a croissant in a variety of different shapes and fillings, from moon, onigiri, croissant, bows, etc. Seeing that they specialize in this type of pastry, I tried a few including an almond croissant, ube moon, and black sesame onigiri. Almond croissant is unmatched, absolutely the best I've ever had. Definitely on the pricier side, but worth it to me -- it's fluffy, sweet inside, and super flaky and crisp outside. I was lucky to catch them right as they were just finished baking, and I gotta say I've never had an almond croissant nearly as good as this. For the ube & black sesame filling -- they're both a bit too sour for my taste, but the croissant/moon is absolutely perfect, otherwise. Black sesame latte - not a fan personally, it's a bit gritty with the black sesame, I was hoping it would be closer to a tang yuan filling in flavor, but it just doesn't work for me. I would highly recommend trying their butter croissant and almond croissant. Definitely get there early, as they tend to sell out before noon. Their hours may show from 8AM-3PM, but they often times sell out well before 3PM. read more

I've come back specifically for the almond croissant and spam bacon mushroom danish twice this month already. The pastries here are so so good - I'm planning on slowly trying them all!! Almond Croissant - The almond paste inside the croissant is so good and flavorful. I'm not a straight almond fan, but the way they've integrated it into the croissant is great. Highly recommend!! Spam Bacon Mushroom Danish - The perfect savory pastry :). I've been convincing myself this makes my breakfast balanced because there's mushrooms in it. We've also tried the chocolate croissant which looked perfect and tasted good! The ham and cheese was good as well, but not as memorable as the danish and almond croissant for us. We'll be back to try the moon pastries next!! There's a small parking lot and there's been a short line when we've come on Sunday mornings. The line moves pretty fast! read more
Addictive and satisfies that breakfast pastry craving! They offer your typical pastries along with pastries with an Asian twist. Selections include danishes, croissants, croffles, and egg tarts to name a few. So far, I've tried their egg tart, the black sesame onigiri, spicy lemongrass chicken croissant, and the fruit croffle. The black sesame onigiri is not an "onigiri" in the traditional sense. It's really a pastry filled with black sesame shaped like an onigiri and they don't skimp on the filling. If you love black sesame like myself, highly recommend! The spicy lemongrass croissant was a nice savory option and had a good amount of heat and flavor to it. As far as egg tarts go, it's pricier than I'm used to, but they do a beautiful job with the layering of the tart. No indoor seating, but outdoor seating available when weather permits. Would recommend parking across the street in the plaza with the Safeway since there's more parking available and it's easier to get in and out of. Would also recommend getting there early, since I imagine they may run out of items as the day progresses. Definitely including in my rotation of after work breakfast treats. read more

I've lived in castro valley for a couple of years but never knew this bakery existed until someone mentioned on an Asian app. We live nearby so during one of our grocery runs, we stopped by to try out their pastries. Parking: small lot. Very limited spots. Ambiance: very small bakery. No seating inside. There are some seating outside but I can tell this is establishment meant for take out. Service: quick. There was no line when we went. Food: 3/5. Pastries were average. I got the sesame onigiri and it was only ok. Like others mentioned, they do have some asian flavor inspired pastries that you won't be able to find in a typical French bakery Cost:$$. Pastries were expensive for their size. read more
