Not only are the pastries some of the prettiest that I've seen but they're actually quite tasty (and not too sweet either)! Comes in a nice branded box too. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. I got two original croissants, an orange creme brulee, and a strawberry crescent croissant. The original croissants were perfectly crunchy, and not too airy that there isn't anything inside the shell. Pretty dense in you ask me, and I love it that way! The orange creme brulee was really pretty. Caught my eye in the crowd! Though I thought that the croissant-style bread on the outside of the pastry was not crispy enough, the creme brulee definitely had a rich orange-y aroma. Ones Cafe is truly an East Bay gem. [[HIGHLIGHT]]You can stretch the definition of "hole in the wall" with this place because 2/3 of the bake shop is the kitchen and 1/3 is the display/ordering area. Making it a bit cramp when you're trying to stand in line, look at what's available, and order at the same time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking here is hard to get to as well, the lot is super small and fits only one car at a time. If you happen to land a spot here your best bet is to reverse all the way out because a three point turn will turn into a multipoint turn quickly. My suggestion is to park in the lot in the plaza next door and walk over. As for the baked goods the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Croissant is phenomenal and the Strawberry Moon is a classic. The flavor profiles here lean Asian with many call backs to flavors such as ube and passionfruit. They also seem to change their menu often too so keep an eye out on the newer items as you visit. In terms of aesthetics of the pastries you can see the love in the folds of each one. The strawberry moon croissant is a good example of this because the amount of ridges in the croissant shows how many times it was folded while making it. That alone is back breaking work and truly a labor of love for something that gets consumed in minutes. Last but not least the staff, we love a good mom and pop shop. The entire family is in on this, from the cashier, baristas, and pastry chef. If you're looking for a AAPI business to support, this is the one to go to. I found this bakery/café within walkable distance from the Castro Valley Bart station so walked over to meet my friends before our holiday weekend hike. Altogether, I spent around $40 on two rounds of pastries for our early morning carb brekkie. I got a lil over-ambitious getting a bit of everything for us to try, but we only got through about half of the haul (almond and chocolate croissants and egg tart) before the hike. This place specializes in croissants and I ordered 8 different ones with an even split with savory and sweet to take home to my family and we were all able to try a bite of everything. I wish I wrote down what I ordered but luckily, I did take a picture. I ordered: Ham and Cheese, Almond, French Custard, Black Sesame, Passion Fruit Ganache, Cheese and Mushroom, Shrimp, and lastly, a kouign-amann. They also had a pastrami one that I wanted to try but they were sold out. Everything was delicious and buttery, as a croissant should be. Nothing was too sweet nor too salty however, I would recommend pairing it with either a nice cup of coffee or tea. My favorite so far was the cheese and mushroom and the kuign-amann but honestly, you cant go wrong with anything. Price wise, they started around $6 each which, for the quality you are getting, I believe is fairly priced. The staff were all very lively and super friendly. Honestly the spread of pastries they have is impressive; though the selection is not as vast as some bigger bakeries, the appearance is very professional and the size is big. I bought ube moon, ham/cheese croissant, choco croissant, lemongrass chicken croissant, pineapple kouign amann, and strawberry croffle; and drinks I got ube latte, black sesame latte, and chai latte. I know that's a lot but I have 3 kids lol. I liked all the pastries especially the lemongrass chicken and ube moon. The pastries have nice crunchy exteriors and I enjoyed it! As for drinks, the black sesame latter is my favorite as it has a bold flavor and a nice balance of coffee and sesame. My least favorite is the ube latte cuz it lacks depth and not worth the price. Saw this viral bakery on Instagram and got to check it out. The location is in prime downtown area of Castro valley. We got there 30 mins before closing and was surprised that they still had a lot of options left. There were a lot that I was curious about, but we ended up going with the lemongrass chicken croissant and pistachio croissant. Lemon grass was very delicious. It was chicken thigh and seasoned very well. I wish the chicken was shredded because there were bites that didn't have chicken in it. Pistachio croissant is filled with pistachio cream. My review is middle of the road. I dropped by this Friday morning, 8:30am. Parking is wonky. My three point turnaround skills came in handy. I walked into the bakery and did a once-over of what was available. Instantly spotted some options. The bakery display is really tall. I am not tall. One of the servers warmly greeted the Spanish speaking patrons that walked in after me-She probably knew them? We were all meandering our picks. I finally stepped in front of the register and asked if we were supposed to place our orders behind the thick plexiglass or order at the front. There were two young persons in the front that said either way would work. I was not greeted or welcomed, so I was confused. I placed my order for three pastries, it came out to be over $23. I did not add a tip, as I don't feel like placing three pastries in a box is warranted a tip. The pastries were good. I got the egg and potato croissant, pastrami and cheese, and a ham and cheese croissant. I felt like being greeted and acknowledged was a very basic thing to do in creating a great experience. Niche businesses need to realize this. Why did the donut business down the street become an icon in this town for decades? Because the people behind the counter loved the people coming in. The potato, ham, and egg croissant was a savory masterpiece! It was like an eggs benedict in one buttery pastry. The croissant kept its crisp integrity, the potatoes were tender, the ham had a hollandaise-like coating, and the whole thing was topped with a perfectly cooked over-medium egg. Located between the Boulevard Pet hospital next to Chevron, and Rowell's Saddlery, taking over pampas old spot -- is a new asian-style woman owned bakery. They've got a dedicated parking lot, but to me, the parking lot isn't really usable unless you've got a scooter or a very small vehicle -- very narrow and difficult/impossible to turn around easily. The bakery itself has a handful of outdoor seating spaces, usually occupied. It's a very small and cozy corner shop, so I assume most of business will be grab-and-go foot traffic. The bakery consists of a small counter of assorted pastries, a small fridge of bottles and cans, and a counter where you can order from a selection of teas, lattes, cocoas. Most of the selection of pastries revolve around laminated dough -- like a croissant in a variety of different shapes and fillings, from moon, onigiri, croissant, bows, etc. Seeing that they specialize in this type of pastry, I tried a few including an almond croissant, ube moon, and black sesame onigiri. Almond croissant is unmatched, absolutely the best I've ever had. Definitely on the pricier side, but worth it to me -- it's fluffy, sweet inside, and super flaky and crisp outside. I was lucky to catch them right as they were just finished baking, and I gotta say I've never had an almond croissant nearly as good as this. For the ube & black sesame filling -- they're both a bit too sour for my taste, but the croissant/moon is absolutely perfect, otherwise. Black sesame latte - not a fan personally, it's a bit gritty with the black sesame, I was hoping it would be closer to a tang yuan filling in flavor, but it just doesn't work for me. I would highly recommend trying their butter croissant and almond croissant. Definitely get there early, as they tend to sell out before noon. Their hours may show from 8AM-3PM, but they often times sell out well before 3PM. read more

The black sesame onigiri is not an "onigiri" in the traditional sense. It's really a pastry filled with black sesame shaped like an onigiri and they don't skimp on the filling. If you love black sesame like myself, highly recommend! The spicy lemongrass croissant was a nice savory option and had a good amount of heat and flavor to it. As far as egg tarts go, it's pricier than I'm used to, but they do a beautiful job with the layering of the tart. No indoor seating, but outdoor seating available when weather permits. Would recommend parking across the street in the plaza with the Safeway since there's more parking available and it's easier to get in and out of. Got Ones Bakery in Castro Valley for Mother's Day and everything was amazing. The sweet cheese bowties were flaky, buttery, and had just the right amount of sweetness. The pistachio kataifi croissant was crispy and rich without feeling too heavy. Also tried the ube moon, strawberry moon, passion fruit ganache danish, and black sesame origami -- every pastry had its own flavor and none of them tasted overly sweet. My husband went to pick up some pastries for me, so I couldn't speak for the service/atmosphere. This review is mainly for the food quality. He ordered a few items - French tart, Ube moon, and spicy lemongrass chicken. The french tart looks obviously undercooked, the dough is just a blop instead of layered and crispy like their other pastries. Is it supposed to be like that? Either way, not a fan. I like the taste of the spicy lemongrass chicken, but the pastry is a bit undercooked inside and drenched with the chicken oil/juice/sauce whatever. The first few bites are okay, then once I get to those damped part, I just had to spit it out... Ube moon is fine, maybe they pipet the filling in so the pastry isn't drenched. I had a really disappointing experience today, even though the service itself was kind and attentive. I only eat halal meat, so when something isn't halal I always order vegetarian and I always double check. Today I ordered the mushroom pastry and asked for the vegetarian pastry, and while they were ringing me up I double checked and said, "It's vegetarian, right?" which was confirmed. At first, when I noticed the texture, I honestly thought it was just a mushroom. But as I continued eating, there was a clear meaty taste. I checked the rest of the pastry and found an actual piece of meat inside. It smelled like meat and was very clearly not vegetarian. This was honestly heartbreaking for me because I'm extremely careful with food and always confirm before ordering. I understand mistakes can happen, but when someone explicitly asks for vegetarian, mix-ups like this really matter. The staff was very nice and the service itself was good, which is why this review is hard to write. I just hope the kitchen can be more careful going forward, especially for customers with dietary restrictions. read more

Amazing lamination in these folk's pastries. Absolutely terrific place. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the service was also quite good. It is a walk in place, but had some great displays of the food items, so a welcoming ambiance. We will be back! read more

This gem is absolutely out of this world! Must visit because their food/drinks are both incredible and their prices are more than reasonable. Where does this combo even exist in the bay anymore!? The croissant items were so buttery, flaky, and the ube latte was enough to put me over the edge! They happened to be sold out of their savory pastries so will need to check back in for those another time. read more
