Galette des rois, with the crown and the fève.

Seven Hills bakery rocks!!! Last year they didn't make galettes des rois, either somebody was sick or something happened, but YAYYY!!! They have them this year!!! Only available yesterday and today, January 5th and 6th. Yesterday there was quite a long line to buy them or pick them up. Today I went earlier, so no line.... Yet. I love galette des rois, the puff pastry with frangipane feeling. Some stores in San Francisco make there all month long. Will go get them there when I am through with these.

Chocolate croissant & 2 kouign amanns

After trying the kouign amann in Oahu, I've been craving for it since then. After doing some research on Yelp, I found this place. I arrived roughly around 10am and there were plenty of pastry selections. I ordered two kouign amanns and one chocolate croissant. In terms of flavor, the kouign amann were buttery and flaky on the outside but when I got to the center, it was quite dense. As for the chocolate croissant, I was quite disappointed. Part of the crust was crispy but it wasn't buttery nor flaky as a croissant should be and when I finally found the chocolate "pieces", there wasn't much of it.

New favorite: No Name Bun. Basically a savory kouign amann with everything bagel seasoning and some oregano. Not as greasy and def not sweet. So many layers and stayed flaky as we munched away all day today!

Chocolate Almond Croissant, Kouign Amman & Almond Croissant

This little bakery is located on the ground level of the Castro Valley Marketplace. I stopped by to pick up a Kouign Amman since it was recommend to my husband and he wanted to try it. Once I got there, I was greeted by the friendly staff who told me their best seller is the Kouign Amman. There were a bunch of different pastries lined up along the display case & bread lined up behind the counter. I ended up getting the Kouign Amman, Chocolate Almond Croissant & Almond Croissant. My husband & I couldn't wait, so we ended up eating them in the car on the way home. All of the pastries were delicious but the star for us was the chocolate almond croissant - sooo good!! We can't wait to return to get this again!

Nothing beats freshly handcrafted pizza and baked goods, and when they're made with the care and craftsmanship found at Seven Hills Baking Company, the competition should take notice. Located in the Castro Valley Marketplace, a vibrant local food hall and market that has been open since 2020, Seven Hills Baking Company is the creation of Parisian-born baker Julien Wagner. Wagner's vision is rooted in preserving and perfecting classic baking techniques while highlighting fresh, locally sourced ingredients, resulting in both sweet and savory offerings that feel both timeless and satisfying. Working in the finest kitchens stateside for the past 30 years, Wagner has turned his attention towards learning and sharing baked techniques with his fellow aspiring bakers and his loyal customers for the past 25 years, which is exemplified by their highly-praised kouign amann, of which they have only one version, but is meticulously made in-house with thoughtfulness and precision. What brought me here on a warm weekend afternoon, was walking around the downtown region of Castro Valley and being able take in the sites and sounds of this once sleepy town, which has been enlivened by the opening of the Castro Valley Marketplace five years ago which for decades was a former billards room. I have had my eye on Seven Hills Baking Company since their opening five plus years ago and was so glad that I could finally go. The line was long when we arrived, but thanks to their hard-working team, it wouldn't be too long before it was our turn to order. Although a number of the items along their counter behind the glass partition looked delicious, including their Sugar Brioche Bun and their wide variety of scones including Ginger, Chocolate, and Parmesan, there was something about their Chocolate Almond Croissant that was calling my name, so we ordered one of those in addition to one Ham & Cheese Croissant and two of their signature Kouign Amann pastries. And although they were not featured within their glass counter, we had to order their savory pizza slices and so we ordered three of their Pizza Romana Slices, with one going to a friend. Taking our sweet and savory baked goods home, we dove first into our savory pizza slices which were more focaccia bread-like in consistency, topped with a nice array of fresh ingredients, cheese and pesto sauce it was caramelized to perfection thanks to the overall bake on it. Our Chocolate-Almond Croissant was your standard croissant that had a lot of depth to it thanks to the amount of chocolate, dark rum, and natural extract ranging from vanilla, orange, and almond. I love the rich layer of sesame seeds coating their Ham & Cheese Croissant, but the true star at Seven Hills Baking Company is the kouign amann, baked to golden, crispy perfection. The intricately layered pastry is caramelized and crisp on the outside, glazed with a sweet, sticky syrup, while remaining soft and flaky within. It's easy to see why this has become one of their signature pastries. Our total bill came to $37.75, and the seven pastries we enjoyed were more than enough to keep us happily satisfied for days. Fittingly named after Rome, the Eternal City, Seven Hills Baking Company is anything but walled in, as they welcome everyone to enjoy its light yet sumptuous pizzas, pastries, and desserts. It's a place I fully intend to return to again and again.

Pain suisse. Dry and the custard and chocolate are not blended. Not good at all.

Service without a smile. Just want you dream of on a Sunday morning. Found the pastries to be just ok. Would have enjoyed the Kouign-Amaan a bit more had they been able to warm it up. Would t go back. Inside a super cute market though.

I've been here before and they always have such a great selection of pastries. I do wish they sold lattes, though I got a Parmesan artichoke pretzel and typically I don't like pretzels, but it looks so good and I'm glad I got it. It tasted so great a little heavy on the garlic but I really love garlic. I just think it was pretty strong. The service was really nice. I really like the young gal that was working there not too much ambience because it's a walk up counter, but the display was very nice. Highly recommend.

Dangerous!!! The Kouign Ammans are SO delicious and will have you addicted, devouring them two at a time and getting fat lol. They are perfectly rolled in full buttery, flaky layers with a perfect crispy sugar crunch... This bakery is wonderful and this item is a must buy. Everything else looks absolutely amazing, but the Kouign Ammans are my kryptonite. Thank you, Seven Hills Bakery!

The pumpkin cinnamon rolls was delicious I think the only thing is the bread tasted a bit dry but the taste of the pumpkin is incredible and the cream is thick but delectable! The service is fast and easy! The bakery is cute and leaves you in awe with all the delicious baked goods laid out. I hope to try more later!

    Grace C.

I'm kind of glad I don't live closer to this bakery or I'd have addiction issues. It's situated inside the Castro Valley Marketplace so you can pick up some other things while getting your baked goods fix. Panna cottas are always at the top of my list and this one outshines its $7 price. Clean, vanilla bean top notes balanced with just enough sweetness from the fruit. I could go on and on about it but I'll just say it's divine and move on. The espresso walnut cookie had that satisfying chewy bit like a good brownie. Both of those cookies disappeared too quickly; I should have stocked up. I had the Cheddar Scone the next day and it held up! Of course I took a bite while it was in its prime, to compare. The flavors aren't shy so if you have a meeting right after, might want to grab some gum to counteract any garlic breath.

I have had my share of Kouign-Amann from top chef owned businesses, and even tried one from different bakeries outside of California. My vote validates that this is truly a renowned Kouign-Amann, as noted on Yelp, as it is the best I have had so far! It melts in your mouth and has this sweet, buttery flavor that I haven't tasted in any Kouign-Amann I've eaten from other bakeries. I have eaten this after re-heating it in the toaster oven and also eaten it without being heated, and IT IS MOUTH WATERING GOODNESS WITH EVERY BITE, EITHER WAY! Every time we go to Seven Hills Baking Co, we always buy multiple Kouign-Amanns for our family. Their pumpkin muffin and morning bun are rich and delicious. I went on a Friday once and was excited to see challah bread to take home for our family to enjoy! The staff members are all kind and take care of customers in a timely manner. When you're in Castro Valley, make sure to treat yourself to the freshly baked comfort foods of Seven Hills Baking Co.!

Such a great marketplace it's beautiful with lots of options for food. I needed coffee and by the pictures I had seen on Yelp. I needed to try that chocolate croissant, let me tell you it was flaky, buttery, not too much chocolate and in a way light. It was delicious, they do not warm pastries up not sure why? That's ok didn't bother me at all. My daughters hot chocolate was amazing, tasted very similar to my moms not overly sweet. Knocked one star off due to the coffee didn't really like the taste of it. Friendly customer service with a beautiful assortment of pastries.

Is there any place to sit down and have a pastry and coffee?

Yes. The marketplace has a few tables in the middle for guests to sit down and enjoy their food, from Seven Hills, Akemi sushi, etc....Also a few tables in front of building.

    Can u order ahead?

Hi. We accept prepaid preorders with 48 hours notice from opening on the day of pick up for bread and 24 hours for pastry. Smaller orders may be expedited faster depending on quantity. I hope this helps.

Do you Guys offer gluten free breads and pastries?

Hi, we do not offer gluten-free breads but we do offer a gluten-free scone, a gluten-free chocolate cookie a few gluten-free desserts in our cold case

Is everything made in stock? More specifically are your croissant variations made in house ? Butter croissants and ham and cheese croissants, etc?

Hi Gary. What do you mean by made in stock? We make everything from scratch on site. You can observe the croissant dough being laminated every afternoon just behind the counter. I hope this helps answer your question.

What days do you have a fully whole wheat loaf?

Hi. Thanks for your question. We offer a whole wheat pan loaf Monday through Friday. We do not actually offer a 100% whole wheat. This loaf is 60%. We also have our Country and Seeded Multigrain loaves available 7 days a week. They are…

Will there be Yule logs for Christmas?

We don’t make them. However, Crispian in Alameda does.

7 on weekdays and 8 on weekends.

Are you open on MLK holiday Jan 18?

    Yes

I just had a slice of the potato pizza. It was great. Are there certain days you make it? And the Foccacia Blanca?

We make the pizza Bianca every day. The Pizza Romana is a bakers choice. Today, for example, it was roasted onion, Asiago and basil. The potato pizza has been very well received so it will eventually be made daily.

Do you serve coffee and tea here?

We proudly serve Proyecto Díaz Coffee

    What quiche when?!?

They have various specials on certain days. Currently those include: Quiche and blueberry muffins on Saturdays, Farmhouse round and raisin bread on Sundays, Kouinn Amann on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Do they have any gluten free options?

We offer gf oatmeal cranberry scones. They’ll be available again this Friday

What kinds of breads (not pastries) do they sell?

I think they may be rolling out more breads, but here's what they had available on my first two visits: - baguette & demi baguette (half size)…

The location hasn't been opened that long and you ran out. I hope you reopen at a different location. There are many of us (regular weekly loyal customers) who truly miss Te'Amo Boba Tea x Mochi Donut.

I had heard a lot about this small business from my auntie a couple years ago when Dubai chocolate…read moresuddenly became viral. I finally found some time to visit with my cousin on a quiet Friday early afternoon. We were greeted to a beautiful, clean, and well organized store by the kind and polite owner, Areej. The vibe of the store very much so echoed a candy store you'd find in a shopping mall, except all the sweet treats are handmade and imported from countries such as Palestine and Turkey. Areej was very kind and welcoming and walked us through each of the different sweet treats, such as truffles and Turkish delights. There are also various mixed roasted nuts options with unique seasonings, and even Dubai chocolate strawberry cups! Areej was kind and generous, providing ample samples of the Turkish delights in flavors like Oreo, Dubai chocolate, birthday cake, and even sesame chocolate! My cousin also really likes their mixed party nuts that had a great spicy kick to it from a special blend of imported spices. Because of Areej's hospitality and generosity, as well as the prime quality of the chocolate truffles, mixed toasted nuts, and Turkish delights we were able to sample, I definitely did not hesitate to take home some delectable goodies (see photos). There also were skincare products made in Palestine, and I bought this homemade rose scented olive oil soap that I'll be gifting to my friend for her birthday :) Thank you so much, Areej, for being so welcoming! We will definitely recommend to others and come back! PS: It was mentioned that in the past, many people would walk in, sample large amounts of the shop's goodies, and then rudely leave the store without buying anything. Honestly, that's so distasteful! We need to support small businesses as much as possible, and even buying as much as one tiny chocolate truffle helps sustain businesses like The Old City Roastery. Businesses that make our diverse SF Bay Area so rich in culture and high-quality foreign culinary cuisines. Have some decorum, yall!!

Can you guys please make a cookies and cream Turkish delight?? Please and thank you!

If you're thinking about giving a food birthday gift or if you know someone who just needs a food…read morepick-me-up, get a box of pastries for them here! Not only are the pastries some of the prettiest that I've seen but they're actually quite tasty (and not too sweet either)! Comes in a nice branded box too. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. Only a couple of customers in line when I visited on a Sunday early afternoon and the display case was still more-than-half full. Okay-ish service; the lady at the cashier was primarily focused on quickly completing orders.

Though the bakery is pretty small, it was perfectly cozy with plenty outdoor seating available. There are a couple tables outside, and a bar-style seating area outside. Plus, a lot of parking spaces are available! The pastries are displayed beautifully under the warm lights of the shelf. Totally cute! Most importantly.. Instagram worthy! I got two original croissants, an orange creme brulee, and a strawberry crescent croissant. The original croissants were perfectly crunchy, and not too airy that there isn't anything inside the shell. Pretty dense in you ask me, and I love it that way! The orange creme brulee was really pretty. Caught my eye in the crowd! Though I thought that the croissant-style bread on the outside of the pastry was not crispy enough, the creme brulee definitely had a rich orange-y aroma. The strawberry crescent was my absolute favorite. I love how the hard, dense outside contrasted with the creamy center. The strawberry cream in the center isn't too sweet in my opinion! The shape wasn't just creative, it was also so fun to eat! You'll be seeing me again!
