Went back twice since posting my last review. I must say, Rubato again blew me away. It's already clear to anyone who read my last review how I feel about the fried chicken sandwich: it's incredible. Today, the piece of chicken was massive, crispy, and delicious. I wanted to highlight a few more things I tried to give some more info for those wondering about what to order. The spam bolo bao. My friends, I was skeptical of the spam. But I am fully converted. The meat was salty, crispy, a perfect complement to the sweetness of the bao. solid egg. i'm a sucker for a well placed kraft single. as a breakfast sandwich, you really can't beat this. the first time i went back i wanted to try the char siu bao, which i had missed the last time. it did not disappoint. it was the best char siu bao i've ever had, hands down. a lot of dim sum places do the meat too sweet and red, but rubato's does not overdo the sweetness allowing you to really savor the pork. today i went back for that pork bao. i was itchin for it. when they told me that they only had the vegetable ones left, i wasn't thrilled. i got a couple of the veggie ones to try, not expecting much. boy was i wrong. the sechuan vegetable bao is really in a class of its own. really good flavor, the veggies are perfectly cooked in the bao. the smoked tofu has a great firm texture. i challenge anyone who doesn't think a vegetarian bao could find a place in their hearts to try this one. read more

I've made it into Rubato twice, once on a weekday morning and once on a weekend morning. Word of mouth is traveling fast so they do sell out - get there on the earlier side. Both times I ordered out the counter and ate inside. Staff was friendly and the turnaround time for food was quick though they were busy. The first time I ordered one of their congee dishes and a hot HK milk tea and the second time a chicken bolo nap and iced milk tea. Visit 1 - The congee was flavorful and filling. My only gripe was the milk tea could've been hotter so you should be clear if you like your tea hotter. Visit 2 - The chicken bolo bao is fire. Whatever you've heard, the rumors are true. I am from the Deep South where fried chicken is a competitive pastime. This is the best fried chicken sandwich/biscuit I have had since moving to New England 10 years ago - PERIOD. The end. I don't know what more information you need, but go order one. (Also the iced milk tea was good - not too sweet and they will customize the sugar level for you.) I am sure they will work out the kinks over time with selling out before closing and offering delivery orders soon. They just opened - I am choosing to give them some grace as they navigate the outpouring of love for the neighborhood. Delicious Cantonese food in the heart of Quincy. I grew up eating a lot of these foods and the food and ambiance are as authentic as it gets. The only thing that might not be "authentic to its roots" is the service cause it's exemplary! Salty egg yolk French toast was so creamy and delicious, the fried chicken bolo was juicy and super flavorful, the beef brisket rice roll was super fresh and the beef flavorful and tender. They didn't have any baos left when we got there (12:30pm on a holiday Sunday) so we are planning to arrive way earlier next time! I want to start off saying that I love the food here ever since it was still Contempo Bakery. The food is still great now that it is Rubato. However, I don't appreciate the unfriendly welcome, aggressiveness, and attitude from one cashier. She usually wears an eye patch. I dont understand but every single time i stop by to get food, 10/10 times she is rude to me and is aggressive. Today was about utensils. I ordered on ubereats and apologized that i forgot to mention to add utensils. i asked if i could have utensils when i picked up. she gave me a big sigh, stomped over to check the receipt, pointed the receipt at me saying "well you didnt say you wanted it". i said sorry but she wouldnt have it and gave me attitude the whole time. customer experience was not great. It took me a little while to get to Rubato, but I'm so glad I did. I'm addicted to the fried chicken boil bao. (I've had one a week since I first tried it!!!) Stopped by on a Sunday morning to try some HK style breakfast. The menu brought back feelings of nostalgia for my childhood! It was pretty busy when we arrived around 11. There were quite a few people waiting for their orders but we were able to quickly order and received our food in about 15 minutes. The food/drink: Lava egg yolk French toast - our favorite!! So good and savory. Definitely not a light dish but that's how it's supposed to be. Must try. Beef brisket cheung fun - good amount of beef brisket to cheung fun. There were also pieces of daikon so you know it's legit. Fried chicken Pineapple bao - messy but yummy. Juicy chicken too. Half and half milk tea and coffee - suprisingly smooth! There was an option to add sugar which I did not take but I would suggest taking it to balance out the stringency of steeped tea. Overall great grab and go place. I came here last Sunday around noon. The aesthetic inside is so cool, they did a great job with the ambiance / décor here. I ordered a fried chicken bolo bao and my boyfriend got a butter bolo bao, beef brisket ji cheung fun, and a hot milk tea. The fried chicken bolo bao was heavenly, super crispy chicken in a buttery soft bao. My boyfriend was very happy with his meal as well, but I think he wished he had gotten the chicken like me since it was beyond superb. It was super packed in the restaurant as Rubato has become very popular, and it would have taken a long time to wait for a table, so my only wish is that they had a bit more space for the many people who want to try Quincy's hottest new spot! read more

So so so delicious!! We love the creativity of using a bolo bun as the sandwich bread. The fried chicken was well battered and super crunchy. Drinks- soy milk and HK milk tea were very fresh. Overheard the youtiao sells out within an hour of opening, so much get there early! Service was quick! I wish the restaurant had more sit down space, but it is a smaller place. Cute interior and charming place but not the most authentic chinese bakery food. I miss Contempo Bakery before it closed and was replaced by this place. The items here were limited. Everything was expensive and there was always something a little off from each order. $5 for a small pork and century egg congee or $7 for one with extra toppings was not worth it when you could go to the bakery down Billings Rd and get one that not only tasted better but was also significantly cheaper. Disappointed with this place as I was really looking forward to having a more modern/trendy Chinese bakery in Quincy but the food was just not it. Maybe I'll give this place a second shot in the future as I went about a week after grand opening and they may have changed a few things but for now, I'll stick to my go-to Chinese bakeries on Brook St in Wollaston. read more

Since we live down the street, we visit Rubato anywhere from once every two weeks to a couple of times a week for breakfast. It's a great early option in an area that otherwise doesn't have a lot of choices open before 10am, especially in the way of Chinese/dim sum/cha chaan teng food. I absolutely love the pineapple buns, pineapple bun sandwiches, and congee/yau tiu. Taste for those is 100% in line with what I'd expect from similar items in Hong Kong or the other good restaurants around here. Staff is friendly and helpful, and the restaurant is always clean and tidy. Seating is a bit limited and cramped, but I think they do the best they can with the space (it was never very conducive to having seating even back when it was Contempo). If you go before 9am, though, there's usually plenty of seating available. A couple of reasons why I took off a star: * Prices are a bit high. I know food costs and labor costs are high, and I understand why it needs to be this way, but it's hard to justify $2 for a plain bo lo bao or $4 for a bo lo bao with butter when there are cheaper options for Chinese baked goods in Quincy and the surrounding area. The portions are a little small for things like coeung fun and congee compared to the prices, too. * If you're looking for a traditional, old-school cha chaan teng, this is not it. Almost everything on the menu has a spin on it, and it's definitely missing some key things you'd find at an old-school place. That's fine, but it's just not my style, so I only come here when I'm looking for something a little different than the usual cha chaan teng options. * There are some ordering/menu quirks that bother me, such as not all the options being standard for congee, and needing to select your sugar level for milk tea (something I've never seen another HK-style place do). It makes the ordering process a little clunky and slow, less like I'm at a cha chaan teng and more like I'm at some elaborate bubble tea place where I have to rattle off a bunch of preferences. Overall, I obviously like it a lot since I come here so much, but I did find myself disappointed that it wasn't more like a cha chaan teng, especially with so many of them dying out around here. It almost feels a bit misleading to call it a "HK style cafe" because it's not really that. Or at least, it's a very limited selection of what you'd find in one. But if you want to try delicious and new takes on old classics, though, it's a great spot. read more

I am willing to give a restaurant a chance and that's why I am willing to spend $25 dollars on Bake pork chop rice dish but didn't have a high expectation to it. As expected it is a total disappointment and is a false advertisement. There is no pork chop instead there were sliced pork meat. Don't call in Hong Kong style if it's not even close. In Hong Kong the rice should be fried rice with pork chop on top and tomato sauce, they put white rice instead. This restaurant charges $25 for sliced pork on white rice with tomato sauce. It was the first and last time for me to buy anything from this restaurant RIP. read more

There's nothing wrong with the food. I went in to buy a hot soy milk, paid for it, only to be told its not ready yet. I don't have the time to wait. They offered me cold soy milk. I was fine with it. What I didn't like is that, they then told me there's a price difference and they will waive it. I didn't asked for cold to begin with. Wow, I finally got to try the chicken bao today and it is probably the best fried chicken sandwich I've ever had! It was perfectly crunchy yet the chicken was still moist, slaw was perfect complement and sauce had a little kick to it to balance out the sweet bun. I o came and ordered a bunch of their popular items for my family for the first time recently. The fried chicken bolo bun was pretty good and worth it. The fried doughs were fine too. Everything else was very mediocre. The sampan porridge was not good at all and portion was very small. Cheung fun had a good texture but the sesame and hoisin sauce was just off. I recalled the previous owners had VERY good cheung fun (sauce and all). The steamed char siu bao was terrible - bun was hard, char siu not good. My daughter loves char siu bao and she took one bite and wouldn't eat any more. Overall this was overpriced and not very good. I wanted to say, if you're running a restaurant, how can you not have popular items in stock? The quality of their food and drinks is also poor, far from authentic Guangzhou cuisine. While I thoroughly enjoyed each and every single dish and it did bring back a lot of nostalgia, I will say the price does seem a little high for what you get. But that won't stop me from coming back whenever the cravings hit! The highlight for me were the fishballs which were plump, tender, bouncy, and paired so well with the mildly spicy curry sauce.
