Even with a line out the door every day, this spot completely lives up to the hype. They serve traditional Hong Kong comfort food alongside authentic milk tea and Yuen Yeung (coffee and milk tea blend) that is perfectly sweetened without needing any adjustments. The chicken and omelette rice plate features generous portions of perfectly seasoned, incredibly crispy, and juicy chicken that isn't greasy at all. The Hong Kong peanut butter French toast is another standout item to order. The decor fully rounds out the theme, creating a great atmosphere that is both elder and youngster approved. Staff is quick and efficient. Definitely get their early and be prepared to wait!

    Beef curry with rice

Had a satisfying meal. We ordered the beef curry, baked pork chop rice, tea, and bolo bao. The beef curry had a nice coconut flavor and was really tasty. We always enjoy the tea and bolo bao whenever we visit. The baked pork chop rice was another favorite and hit the spot. The only dish we didn't care for was the bologna, which was a bit too cheesy for our taste. Overall, it was a great meal and a place we'd happily return to.

My fiancée brought me and her parents over for an early Father's Day breakfast. We made sure to get there right when they opened to avoid any crowds soon to come because of the popularity of this store. We liked the food, it's a little pricier than that of your American breakfast but keep in mind that this is what a simple breakfast in Hong Kong would be like. Just like your bacon, eggs and pancakes you could make at home, it's the same here with the dishes that they provide. I do say that I personally I loved the way they made their scrambled eggs, and pairing it with the nice buttery toast was delicious. It's a nice side dish to pair with items like the ham macaroni soup and beef satay noodles. They're simple dishes but taste really good! I would love to come back during lunchtime to experience their other dishes

Bayou Cafe is one of my favorite Hong Kong style restaurant in Massachusetts. The restaurant has very limited parking spaces in front of the restaurant, maybe enough for three or four cars? Be prepared to find street parking and even do a little walking. As for wait time, I have been here twice during lunch and on the second trip I did have to wait 20 minutes for a table. The restaurant was packed and there were plenty of takeout orders throughout the meal when I dined in both time. Clearly, a local favorite. You can try the trio appetizer that lets you try the fish ball, fish dumpling, and rice rolls. It's the right amount to share with three people and each person gets a taste of the three appetizers. My favorite had to be the rice balls, followed by the fish dumplings, and last the rice noodles. Of the toasts I have tried so far, I preferred the sweet toast dessert filled with milk as opposed to the truffle egg toast. For entree, I have to say, the fried chicken with the omelet egg is a must try. Next would be the Hainese chicken. Then third with be the sorrowful rice, which is two fried eggs and bbq pork. Everything was so flavorful. You have to try the milk teas. If you prefer sweet, go for the ice bear milk tea, but if you like a bit bitter, go for the hot version and add sugar to your preference. Overall, food came at a fast pace, service attentive. There is plenty of seating end even seating in a private dining space for a larger group of 10 or so in the back of the restaurant. I would definitely be coming back. See my pictures.

So value and so good. Apparently the prices have gone up, but it's still super cheap. Only drawback is the food can get a little greasy, so be prepared. Chow Foon (8/10): Extremely solid, with plenty of wok hei. I always judge chow foon off of the beef, and they did pretty well here. It was tender and flavorful. Noodles had perfect texture. Chicken Quarter Appetizer (7/10): This was pretty good fried chicken. Very crispy. I think Cafe Mami in Porter Square still does it better. It was a bit too greasy for me. It's VERY value though ($9.99 for a massive piece) Bolo Bao w/ Silky Scramble Egg (8.5/10): I haven't had this combo before, but it was very good. Their silky scramble egg dishes are a must-try. Cream-Filled French Toast topped with Ovaltine (9/10): Delicious. They somehow made cheese work with this. I applaud it. Baked Pork Chop w/ Portuguese Sauce (8.5/10): Portuguese sauce was delicious. Pork was tender and flavorful. Cheese on top was delicious. We waited about 90 minutes for Saturday lunch. I would highly recommend not coming with more than 4 people. If you do, you should split your party. They only have one large table. Service was very good, though. Food came out super fast.

Nice fast casual HK-style food spot! Fun vibes and bright colors in the cafe, and there were so many fun food items. We ordered the curry fish balls and shrimp shumai, and sizzling pork plate that came with rice and a free drink (ordered yuzu tea). The appetizers were a bit small, but the main was a great deal. The chicken looks great to try next time. Staff were all friendly as well, and we had a very positive experience.

Food is tasty and at a great price! I'd say the must get is the fried chicken with rice, but honestly everything I've tried has been tasty and at a good price. I've taken a handful of my friends/family here and everyone has loved it! I would recommend: - as mentioned above, the fried chicken and rice - anything with egg because they really do a good job cooking the eggs - bolo butter bun (though I wouldn't recommend eating the entire slab of butter, maybe 1/4-1/2) They also get bonus points for great branding and a fun interior. Love the mahjong tables and bright colors!

10/10 for authenticity! The decor and menu exceeded my expectations and brought me back to HK cha chaan tengs. Saturday lunch wait was a struggle so definitely put your name on the waitlist as soon as you can. All members have to be present to be seated. Food was delicious with reasonable prices and prepared/served very efficiently. In particular, the eggs are made very silky. Get the french toast cubes with condensed milk! The fried chicken quarter dish seemed very popular too. I wish I could have tried more!

Bayao Cafe nails the Hong Kong-style café experience with precision and comfort. The rice roll with mixed sauce set the tone--silky, delicate texture with that nostalgic sweet-savory balance that hits immediately. Beef chow fun came through with tender beef and clean flavor. The shrimp with silky scrambled eggs over rice was textbook comfort food. Soft, custardy eggs, plump shrimp, and perfectly cooked rice soaking up every bite. Both the ham macaroni soup and braised beef brisket flat noodle soup delivered depth and warmth--the brisket especially was rich, tender, and slow-braised the way it should be. The fried chicken leg quarter was crisp outside, juicy inside, and surprisingly well-seasoned. A must order! Drinks were solid and refreshing: iced Bear milk tea was smooth and balanced, while the Ice Bear lemon tea was bright and clean, cutting through the richness of the meal perfectly. Bayao doesn't chase trends--it executes classics consistently and well. If you know, you know. And if you don't, this is where you start.

I didn't see a way to make reservations ahead of time. We walked in for 12pm lunch on a Saturday. The place was full. I entered our party in and was seated about 15 minutes later. Things moved pretty quickly. The decor was cool. We were seated at a table with mahjong under the glass. Overall the food was tasty and portions were good. We had curry fish balls, bolognese, mini French toast bites with condensed milk, and the chicken quarter with rice. Service was quick. You can split on a maximum of two cards. They have 3 parking spots out front.

Loveee the modern take on cha chaan tang ! It's always fun to come here and the food is amazing and comes out very fast with excellent quality! We love the fried chicken it is always so juicy and crispy everytime! We tried the French toast for the first time and it's so warm, sweet, and comforting. It's a a great and friendly dish for everyone. Service is always great! Love the ambiance but it does get pretty busy and hectic because lots of families come here !

Loved this place! fried chicken leg quarter with omelet rice 4/5 baked pork chop with spaghetti and portuguese sauce 3.5/5 HK style red bean ice w/ice cream 3.5/5 chocolate cream filled cheese french toast 3.75/5 This place is popular! When you get there make sure to put your name down on their ipad and wait there. They don't have a texting/calling system so if you aren't there when they call your name from the front, they will give your table to the next party. Service was quick once we sat down. Got the menus right away and put in the order shortly after. It's a bustling kind of cafe environment with lots of people. I had to wait a while for my drink and even remind the attendant that I had ordered it. Since they had forgotten/missed putting it in during the initial order, they gave it to me on the house!

After doing a quick TikTok search, I was prompted to try out this chicken sandwich from Rubato. We walked over and actually missed it on the street because it's so tiny. After realizing it, we turned around and to our surprise, there were several people inside eating and others waiting. This must be a good sign. We walked in and it was the most casual, laid-back establishment. The green color scheme and plants gave it a more earthy vibe, which I absolutely loved. Since we didn't necessarily know what to order we decided to split the fried chicken bolo. When I tell you, I have not stopped thinking about that sandwich since I ate it, I'm not kidding. Ever since Double Chin Restaurant in Chinatown closed (may she rise again), I've been on a mission to find a worthy fried chicken bolo bao. My friend and I trudged into Rubato on a cold, rainy day, hoping for a replacement. Spoiler alert: we did not find one. We ordered four items: rice rolls with curry fish balls, an egg custard lava bun, Ovaltine French toast, and the fried chicken bolo bao. The rice rolls were mild but fine, topped with enough cilantro and scallion to keep it interesting. The lava bun was hot, gooey, and did its job. (GOOD JOB, LAVA BUN!) The Ovaltine French toast? Eh, it aite. But here's the heartbreak: the chicken bolo bao. The chicken wasn't hot; it had that "sat around" feeling. And the bun? Just a dressed-up brioche, missing that true bo lo bao magic. A brioche bun with a crackly top is not a bo lo bao, my dudes. In short, everything was edible, but nothing made me want to come back. (It's not like be a hawk to swoop in on empty seats to find a place to enjoy the meal is any fun.) The chicken deserved better.
