I've walked by this spot way too many times but cannot believe I never tried it. Today, my friends wanted to go and I'm glad we did. I absolutely love the conch rice noodles, it was so thin and fun. The texture was different from other rice noodles. I also love their special wonton soup. They look different from the normal Cantonese wontons, it was smaller but it was good. The soup was umami. The fresh fish in tomato was absolutely breathtaking! If you're in town and want something other than Cantonese food, try them out. They specialize in Szechuan, Xiang and Min cuisines. China Gourmet offers plenty of seating and quick service. We were served complimentary peanuts to start. We ordered the pork, which had good flavor but was a bit too fatty. I loved the peanut butter noodles! A delicious Fuzhouese staple which is creamy and simple. The white noodles with chili sauce were also good. Overall, the food here is great and authentic. Let me start by saying the food here was phenomenal. We ordered the Oyster and Bean Curd Soup, the Sliced Beef and Chili Pepper entree and the Egg and Crab entree. Everything was perfect and I couldn't stop eating. The flavors were just amazing and I would 100% go back to try the other offerings on the menu. This was as good as any Chinese meal I've ever had in NYC. I really mean that. Also, the clientele here appeared to be more Chinese than American. This is typically an indication that the food is going to be authentic rather than Americanized. (If you see General Tso's on the menu - RUN AWAY!!! because that isn't real Chinese food) The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is because the service was a bit odd. I'm not talking about the fact the waitress didn't speak a word of English. I can live with that. My issue was that rather than allowing us to order the dishes we wanted she was aggressively insistent as to the dishes we should order - almost trying to force upon us the most Americanized dishes they had. Specifically she was pushing the chive dumplings and some chicken dish. While I have no doubt both would have been great, that's not what I came here for. We had to shake our heads and insist that we wanted the Oyster Soup, the Beef with Chilis and the Egg with Crab. I imagine she had trouble accepting that since I guess the typical white person who walks in would not order what we did. I'm sure the language barrier wasn't helping the situation, but irrespective of that it was just odd that she was being so insistent on what we should order rather than letting us order what we wanted. In the end she gave in - our dishes came as we requested - and as I indicated above, we were extremely happy with the results. The food is truly phenomenal and I can't recommend this place enough. But if you don't speak Chinese, just be prepared to fight for what you want to order rather than what the staff tries to push on you. As a postscript, while we were eating another two non-chinese came into the place and sat down. When we were leaving I couldn't help but take a look at what they were eating. I came here for Fuzhou style food specifically. The taste is close enough to the authentic Fuzhou taste but the veggie leaves a strange taste in my mouth. I went there alone. I tried to talk to waitress and cooks there who are out inside the restaurant playing on their phone. I have to call them twice to get their attention each time. When I went in, only 2 people were eating there. After they left, it was just me. They were still rude to me by ignoring me when I call and try to ask questions or give suggestion. The duck Xian mian noodles were cheap, only 12 dollars and I added 2 dollars for the extra vegetables. The noodles were served quickly. They were mostly noodles and very few vegetables and meat. I guess that is why it is cheap, but it is not good enough quality given how noodles take up most of the bowl there. I feel like I was only eating noodles and nothing else. Been around Boston for 6 years and counting but still finding places that I haven't tried before! The restaurant is one of the few serves some Fujianese dishes. I actually don't know another restaurant that serves this region of cuisine so the previous statement might be false. For food we tried the steamed fish head with chiles which was a large portion of buffalo carp. The fish was cooked perfectly with the meat flaking off and staying moist with the chilies providing a nice balance of heat. Some other noteworthy items include the noodles with peanut sauce from the appetizer and the stir fried rice noodles. The appetizer noodle was a good size portion for $4 and the rice noodles are thinner than the average Cantonese Mei fun. The flavor was great for both dishes and I would definitely come back for! read more

Did not have the most filling. The beef + enoki mushroom pot however was very good. It was similar to a mala spice, so be prepared to drink a lot of water if you get this dish. The presentation was also nice since it came on top of a fire that went out by itself a couple of minutes afterward. The pot was nice and hot the whole duration of the meal. We ordered the shredded potato with salted duck egg yolk and the drooling chicken, although the online menu was so well-written we wanted to try everything. The potato was crisp, warm, and rich, absolutely delicious and a must try. The chicken was poached and served cold in a chili oil sauce with peanuts. Food(7.0/10)=China Gourmet Restaurant (CGR) is the only restaurant in Boston's Chinatown that serves Fujianese cuisine. Fujian is a province in the southeast corner of China, and it's where my family originated from. Because of the province's location, Fujianese flavor is somewhat of a blend of Cantonese cuisine and Northern China cuisine. Most of the Fujianese food is not spicy like Sichuanese food. Here are some thoughts on the dishes served at CGR. Foo Chow Special Style: 1)Sweet taro cake=I love taro but the flavor of this dish wasn't great for me. It's sweetened mashed taro and served in a plastic bowl. 2)Foo chow style dumpling soup=This is a popular street food dish. Pork and chive meatballs are wrapped in a glutinous chewy dough (texture similar to mochi) and served in "soup" (soup is really just the water they boiled the dumplings in). Foo Chow Meat: 1)Spareribs w. special sauce=A very flavorful dish. The literal translation from the Chinese name of the dish is "ten flavors spare ribs." The ribs are deep fried nicely and served with a sauce with bold flavors. This is one of CGR's best dishes and it was also recommended to us by the waiter. 2)Lychee Pork=This dish was so-so. I didn't taste any lychee in the dish. There are places in Chinatown that better prepare this dish (eg. East Ocean City). 3)Preserved cabbage w. pork=This dish was nothing special. The pork in this dish are cuts of thinly slice pork belly. Foo Chow Seafood: 1)Sauteed clam w. loofah=CGR serves great loofah dishes. Loofah is a vegetable that looks similar to cucumber but has a softer texture closer to a very ripe melon. It's one of my favorite vegetables. This dish is refreshing, but the clams don't add anything to the overall flavor of the dish. 2)Eel w. salt & pepper (whole)=I had a lot of eel while I was in China, so my standards for great eel is high. This dish cost $30 at CGR, but it's the best eel I've had since China. Cuts of eel are deep fried and seasoned lightly with salt and pepper. If you like eel, and willing to spend $30 for it, definitely try this dish. The eel is fresh from one of CGR's many fish tanks, which makes a big difference in the flavor and texture. Vegetables: 1)Sauteed loofah w. dry shrimp=As I mentioned earlier, CGR prepares loofah dishes very well. This dish is $2 cheaper than the one served with clams, and the flavors are the same. Menu on the wall: 1)"Xiang la san si"=This dish is a bit spicy and contains strips of pork, longhorn peppers, and garlic chives. This flavors of this dish were nothing special. Service(5.0/10)=Service is what you would and should expect from a Chinese restaurant. The first time I came here, my friends and I were seated at the table but were not given any menus. We sat there waiting and waiting, and finally asked them for the menus. However, this did not happen the second time we visited CGR. Overall, if you need anything, you have to ask for it. This includes, water, tea, and rice. This is fairly common at restaurants in China. So if you want that authentic experience, CGR will provide it. However, I feel that since we're in the US, it should adapt to basic US restaurant standards. This is why I gave CGR's service a 5.0. Ambiance(6.0/10)=This is a small place with about 5 tables. There is a wall of fish tanks in the back displaying their great seafood. The place looks like something you would find in the alleys/streets of rural China. Although the looks are similar, CGR definitely complies with US sanitation standards (not like Hong Kong Eatery which is also in Boston's Chinatown). While dining here at 3 pm one day, the chefs came out to have their lunch. I laughed out loud when I saw them sitting there smoking at the table. This is definitely behavior you will encounter in China. In China, you can smoke indoors and most of the time, you'll see someone lighting a cig while in the middle of eating dinner. Although this violates US standards, if you don't care about the health hazards of second hand smoke and want an authentic experience, come to CGR. Overall opinion=Overall the food is OK. Some dishes are really good, but some are just ok. I haven't had any dishes that were disappointing, and I would go back again to try other dishes on their menu. Judging by their menu and fish tanks, seafood might be CGR's specialty. Eel has been the only substantial seafood dish I've ordered and the dish was exceptional. I'll definitely try their other seafood dishes the next time I visit CGR. CGR definitely provides a great authentic experience in terms of service and ambiance. It is a small venue with one large table in the back with 2-4 person tables. The cooking is fresh aka, you might have to wait for seafood or other complex dishes. The Food we ate: We started with a beef stew with potatoes dressed in a very spicy "gravy" that had too many ingredients to detect. A simple dish that was (4.4/5). The second dish was sauteed cabbage with peppercorns and red chilies, a sublime dish. We munched some chive dumplings with pork. The pork was minced with spices. The dumplings were steamed (4.2/5). Then we had skewers of sweet potato (more like a yam, yeah it was yam). The chicken skewered wings (not the drums), had a thick coating of spices (5/5). After those skewers, we have lamb and beef with abundant cumin(4.1/5). Authentic Fujian Street food! We came in on a weekday afternoon. We ordered House special Ho Fun (homestyle dumpling skin soup with veggies and minced meat/ intestines), pan fried taro cake (like dim sum turnip cake), noddle with peanut butter sauce, and fujianese dumplings (smaller, crispier, and meatier version of regular dumplings.) Came here with the wife and the in-laws - the numerous dishes we ordered were either hit or miss. The place was really packed and there were a ton of people in there, as opposed to the similar restaurant next door which was pretty empty, so maybe my palate just isn't suited for the restaurant but yours (reader's) might be. Bad Dishes: - Fried Dumplings: I can't remember which dumpling we ordered, but the skin was tough and the filling was unmemorable. The skin was much too thick and diluted the taste of the meat inside. Would not recommend. - Mapo Tofu: I can't do spicy dishes, so I only tried a little bit of it, but the others at the table were not that impressed. - Jajyangmyun (zhazhangmyun?): whatever the black bean noodle was called, it was not good. The sauce did not have enough flavor and was not enough to cover the bland noodles, which were all stuck together. Also the cucumber slice were too large and should have been shaved down. Good Dishes: - Pickled Fish Soup: I did not like this dish bc I hate pickles and pickling, but the rest of the table raved about it, so I'm putting it in this category. The broth was strong and much spicier than it looked. Because it's a clear soup, I had no idea how spicy it was going to be until I took a big slurp. Contains large pieces of white fish (not sure what kind, but I'm going to guess tilapia). - Tomato Egg: although a little bit more watery than I would have liked, the dish was packed with flavor. Wanting a little variety from the usual Canton, Peking, and Szechuan style dishes, I've decided to come to this hole in the wall Fujianese restaurant for a change. We had the dumpling (Yan Pi) soup, a Fujian regional specialty. These dumplings differ from regular ones as the wrapping used to hold the fillings was made of meat, instead of flour. This difference not only augmented the flavors but also gave the dumplings a more fluid texture. Don't be misled by the impression of a "meaty" dumplings soup though, it was actually quite light and not greasy at all. Our two main dishes, pork with preserved vegetables, and loofah with dry shrimp, also complement each other well. The pork dish was very flavorful while the loofah was light and refreshing. As the previous yelpers has commented, this place does a good job preparing the loofah. Since Fujianese cuisine was known for its seafood, we also ordered the lobster vermicelli. However, as my main complaint for the restaurant, we never received our order. Luckily, we had enough food on the table that the lobster wasn't missed. Similarly we also had to re-order a can of coke as the waitress also forgot it. Our bill, however, was calculated correctly (minus the lobster but included the coke). Overall I would return here for the food since everything was delicious and reminded me of the kind of food I would have had at family or a relative's dinning table.
