Shanghai Classic Pan Fried Buns (4 pcs)

I went to Spring Shanghai Pan-Fried Buns during my quick trip to Boston. I ordered the Pan Fried buns and the meatball. The buns were very fresh and served hot. I appreciated the vinegar and chili on the table to add to the buns. The buns had a chewy and crispy wrapper and the filling was seasoned well. The meatball was tender and the liquid it was braised in was flavorful.

I love this place! Super delicious, authentic, Shanghai pan fried pork buns, I always stop by when I'm in Fenway. Limited seating but if you want to do takeout, the staff is always quick to get you your food even when it's busy. The bun is light and thin and the filling is tasty and juicy. Exactly what you'd expect. I'm excited for my next visit as I'm interested in trying some more of their food. Price for the buns is a little high at $10/4 but I guess that's not surprising since they're the only place in town that makes them this way.

2.5/3: was eager to try this place but it did not live up to my small expectations. The front door to get in is very heavy and windy so if you sit next to that door from the inside, it will blow everything off the table each time someone goes in and out. Menu is straightforward. We tried four of the pan fried buns and they all were so hard and filled with way too much dough. Luckily we just started to eat the inside with juice and the meat itself isn't too bad and packed with good flavor. The pickled pork noodle was really just noodle. Broth was ok nothing special. Service was ok, food did come out quick.

Very busy location, but understandably so as their buns are delicious! Friendly service but the wait times are a bit long (went there twice and had to wait about 10-15 mins each time for 4 buns) and a bit pricey too. Otherwise, if you have a craving or want traditional buns, this is a must try spot! They also have nice outdoor seating which is great during the spring/summer season!

Shanghai Mini Pork Wonton Soup (10 pcs) was ok, the skin was too thick and filling was not flavorful

Ordered delivery via Uber Eats, and Im so glad I tried this place. Their pan fried buns are LEGIT! I didn't have high hopes and that the fried dumplings probably wouldn't have any juice left once they arrive, but to my surprise, they actually had juice in them! The bottom was still crispy, and the meat filling had great flavor. I also tried the mini wonton soup, and it was just ok. The skin kinda got mushy, and the meat filling was not very flavorful. Overall, a solid place in Boston for pan fried buns. I'd definitely be coming back next time I'm in town.

The pan fried dumplings slapped!!! The best I've ever had with its crispy pan fried bottom and thin skin. The filling was tasty and had some soup. Skip the rest of the items though...the preserved veggie and shredded pork noodles were bland and noodles did not impress. Chili wontons could've been more flavorful too and not much filling. Lines are out the door but service is quick and it moves fairly fast. Sit inside or outside, it's cramped either way. Will be back for the pan fried dumplings fosho!

On a windy day, it's harder to open the door and get all your food chilled as people walk in and out...they do have outdoor seating for better weather days. Shanghai fried buns are the specialty here, and from a Shanghai visitor, they're pretty authentic, thin-skinned, a lot of juice, and crispy bottoms. You can see the ladies making them in the window. The scallion oil noodles are good on their own, and the pork chop left something to be desired as it was fatty and soggy, no knife to cut with, and don't add much to the main dish as it didn't match the flavor well as it was oily soy-sauce like the noodle but not really flavor in the meat. The minced spicy pork came out cold which wasn't great - was better when they warmed it up on the wok and then put on the noodles. Self-bus the tables. Street parking, watch the signs as resident stickers required most places.

We just tried the classic pan fried buns. Delicious! Chewiness of the dumpling skin and size and flavor of pork filling were good. Super juicy. No issues with service. Almost $10 for 4 dumplings is insane though.

This place is usually bustling with a fun window to see them wrap the dumplings fresh! I tried the pan fried buns which were really good (be warned of the splash zone) and I definitely recommend that, though a tad expensive for only 4. Friends said the other items on the menu were just alright.

Service is quick and efficient, the seating space is casual and clean! It's a bit small inside so it seems that take out is a popular option. Got the panfried buns and wontons! The buns were super crispy and juicy and the skin was very thin and not super doughy. The wontons were also very flavorful! Wish the portions were a bit bigger but other than that a solid meal Also got some soy milk and wanglaoji! Very helpful bc water is not served and it balances the salty food

Pan fried buns were so soupy
    Gabby B.

Soupy soupy buns oh my! Stopped by for dinner on a cold Friday night to check out their pan fried buns and soup options. The place is small with only a few tables. It was pretty busy Friday night but we managed to scoop up a table for two. You order on their touch screen monitor located to the right as soon as you walk in. I noticed there was a lot of to go orders and people kept coming in and out to pick them up. So it was popping! My bf and I wanted to try the buns so we each got an order which comes with four pan fried buns. We also shared one of their spicy pork noodle soups. The buns came out quick! And the soup was nice and hot. Perfect for the cold weather. We didn't really know how to start eating the buns and then I noticed on the wall there were instructions on how to enjoy the soupy buns! First, you take a bite and drink the broth then you dunk your bun into the black vinegar sauce (they have bottles on the table along with spoons, chopsticks) and then you enjoy! It was a lot of fun trying to not drop the soupy buns while we were trying to drink the broth using our chopsticks but we still dropped ours on our plates and spilled black vinegar everywhere! Haha The noodles soup was also very good and it was packed with tons of pork pieces. It was very flavorful and not spicy and we quickly inhailed it. We should of each gotten our own soup. I think next time I will get my own delicious soup and two orders of buns because one order was not enough! They were so good!

A hot, satisfying meal on a rainy day. The Pan-Fried Buns were delicious: large ball of meat, filled with broth, thin exterior, and crispy bottom. Wait times for them were variable: we got the first batch literally right when we sat down and the 2nd batch after 15 mins. The Mini Pork Wonton Soup was tasty too and great for warming up

I want to start this review by saying that the food here is wonderful. The dumplings/buns are probably the best I've had in Boston, and the noodles had a really great and unique taste of charred scallion that was new and delicious. The reason this review is a 4/5 mainly boils down to the price and some logistical things that made dining at the restaurant during the winter a little bit of an issue. Areas for improvement: 4 buns/dumplings for $9.25 feels a little bad. They're good, but over $2 for a bite or two feels a little steep. On top of that, the restaurant is small and packed - and there are at least 3 tables right by the door which receive a blast of cold air each time the door is opened, making napkins go flying through the air each time - which is a lot given how busy they are with deliveries. Maybe having a small barrier or something would help this - I wore my coat, hood, and hat and was still quite cold. They have a lot of outdoor seating though, so I'd imagine that this isn't an issue at all during the warmer seasons. Even with that, the good things definitely shone through here: Scallion Oil Noodles ($8.95): Although the portion size could have been a bit larger, these tastes amazing. I have never had scallion oil noodles before, but the slightly charred green onion taste here was subtle yet delicious. There was a salty hint and with just a touch of chili oil added, these were amazing. They were great without the chili oil as well though, so I recommend having them both ways. Shanghai Classic Pan Fried Buns ($9.25): These were also quite good - they had a lot of soup in them and half of the skin was pleasantly crispy. With just a touch of vinegar, I could have 10+ of these, but the price is a bit prohibitive of having them en masse. Still, eating them nice and slow was a good experience, and I'll definitely come back if I have a craving for this dish. I'd love to come back and try the dry Shanghai noodles as well - which I didn't see on the printed menu but I did see on the ordering tablet inside.

TLDR: Potentially…read moreone of my favorite Chinese restaurants in all of Massachusetts! Beautiful interior, centrally located, and delicious, high-quality food. Will definitely find a reason to come back here soon. ------ FOOD: 1. [MUST TRY] STIR-FRIED CABBAGE W/ PORK BELLY (5/5) Presentation was phenomenal (in a clay pot with its own burner underneath to keep it hot). The portion was much larger than expected, and most importantly, it tasted incredible. Generous amounts of pork in this, and the sauce was authentic and addicting. 2. SCALLION CHICKEN (5/5) Another great choice. This was a huge portion with lots of tender chicken, and the scallion was present without being overpowering. 3. CRISPY BEEF WITH FRIED DOUGH STICKS (5/5) I was expecting Chinese you tiao but these were actually the small, ultra crispy manhua twists! Paired with the beef, this was a large and unique dish that I loved. The crispiness of the mahua made this a textural delight to eat. 4. MANGO SAGO DESSERT (5/5) Big portion, wonderful assortment of toppings including grapefruit, mango, sago, and popping balls over a creamy dessert soup base. 5. PEKING DUCK (4/5) I think I'm a tough critic since I just came back from Beijing and had so much Peking duck there. We ordered the half portion here and it had a generous amount of meat for not being the full portion. There were an assortment of accompaniments, including pineapple (new to me) and sugar (like the Beijing style) which were welcome additions. The wrappers were steamed well and didn't curl up on the edges. Overall this was a solid Peking duck, but the meat wasn't as standout as I was hoping. 6. STEAMED PORK SOUP DUMPLING (4/5) Solid soup dumplings. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely hit the spot. 7. SAUTEED PEA SPROUTS (4/5) Another solid classic. 8. PORK MEATBALL IN CRAB MEAT SAUCE (4/5) This was the most unique thing we ordered. I've never had a shi zi tou meatball with crab meat sauce before. The meatball itself was large (maybe size of a tennis ball), tender, and fatty, as it should be. It was then drowned in a generous lake of traditional crab meat sauce. If you're not a fan of crab meat then this might be a bit too fishy for you, but honestly it all combined surprisingly well and I grew to like this dish more and more with each bite. I wasn't the biggest fan to start, but by the end I wouldn't have minded getting another one! ------ AMBIANCE / ENVIRONMENT: * The interior has the classic Asian style of decor, but you can tell it was recently built / renovated because everything felt new and fresh. * The ambiance also felt more new-school luxurious vs. the typical Asian establishments that are more no-frills with as many tables packed in as possible * You're still somewhat close to the tables around you, but it's not overwhelming during lunch time and we still felt like we had enough space regardless * There's a bar area at the front of the restaurant and then a large, spacious dining room in the back * This is a great place for a date or a meaningful family gathering * Right outside is Boston Common, making this restaurant very well-located for lunch before or after a nice day in the park. While there's lots of parking around the park, a spot itself can be hard to come by, so your best bet might be to use the nearby parking garage instead ------ SERVICE: * Overall the service was great and quick. They did forget our tea, but when we asked for it later they apologized profusely and were quick to bring it out for us * This place fills up quickly so be sure to come early if you don't have a reservation or if you're a big enough group, make a reservation for your desired dining time

JiangNan Boston is an upscale Chinese restaurant that focuses on elevated regional dishes, modern…read morepresentation, and a dining experience that feels more refined than a typical Chinese spot in the city. We walked into a polished, contemporary space with a clean interior design that leaned toward a higher-end, date-night or group-dinner atmosphere rather than casual takeout dining. The lighting was warm and the layout comfortable, with a steady buzz that made the room feel lively without being chaotic. The menu highlights some of the more popular and recognizable Chinese dishes, but executed in a more premium style. We ordered a few items and found standouts like Peking duck, soup dumplings, and seafood-based plates plated carefully and designed to feel more restaurant-forward than street-style. The Peking duck was carved tableside, which added a layer of ceremony to the meal, and the skin had a good crispness that held up against the hoisin and pancakes. The soup dumplings were well made, with a thin wrapper and a rich broth that came through clearly. The flavors were solid and well prepared, with an emphasis on presentation and consistency across dishes. The dining experience itself felt structured and intentional, especially with dishes like Peking duck that were prepared as part of a more formal service. The pacing of the meal felt more drawn out, but that aligned with the upscale style they are aiming for. Service was generally attentive, and the environment was comfortable for longer meals or group gatherings. The main tradeoff is value. While the quality is good and the execution is polished, the pricing felt a bit elevated compared to the portion sizes and what we have gotten at other comparable Chinese restaurants in the area. It sits in that space where you are paying more for atmosphere, branding, and presentation as much as the food itself. Overall, JiangNan Boston is best suited for when you want a more refined, upscale Chinese dining experience rather than a casual meal. The food quality is solid and the environment is polished, but it lands in a space where the pricing feels slightly higher than the value of the dishes alone.

They were a little oily, but not so much that it was a negative. Everything just melded together really well and I basically inhaled this entire serving in minutes. I think the noodles are fresh noodles too - the texture and bounciness was just really really pleasant. 10/10 for these every time. Pan fried pork bun ($10.56) - I was a little less impressed with these. I really like dumplings with the thicker dough skin, but this was a fluffy bun type of wrapper instead. The meat inside was a little mushy, and the juices has seeped into the skin which I normally like with a chewy skin, but with this fluffy skin it just left a lot of the buns very soggy. And because the juice had seeped out of the meat, the meat was also a bit mushy inside. The taste was good but not a huge fan of these, though I'm sure they are better in person. Still, I've been here twice already and will keep coming back, especially for those delicious noodles!

We walked into a casual, modern space with kiosk ordering and limited seating, the kind of place that is better suited for a quick meal rather than a long sit-down dining experience. The room had a practical, efficient energy with a steady flow of customers coming in for a fast bite, and the compact layout kept the focus on the food rather than the atmosphere. The main highlight is the soup dumplings, especially the pork variety. We ordered a basket and found them capturing the signature combination of delicate wrappers, savory filling, and flavorful broth inside, the wrapper thin enough to hold the soup without breaking and the filling well seasoned. The menu also offered other strong options, including pan-fried pork buns, scallion pancakes, beef soup dumplings, noodles, and appetizers like cucumber salad and spring rolls, each arriving hot and well assembled. The scallion pancakes and pan-fried items added a nice contrast with their crisp texture compared to the softer dumplings, and the variety across the menu made it easy to build a meal around the soup dumplings or try a few different items. The ordering process was straightforward, though the smaller dining space could feel crowded during busy meal periods. While the atmosphere was more casual and fast-paced than a traditional dumpling restaurant, the food quality made it a worthwhile stop for anyone craving Shanghai-style dishes in Boston. The staff moved through orders with efficiency, and the food came out without much delay. Overall, Nan Xiang Express delivers a convenient and satisfying dumpling-focused experience, especially for a quick lunch or casual meal in Chinatown.

I had a really enjoyable meal at Dumpling House in Cambridge…read more The dumplings were fresh, juicy, and full of flavor. I especially liked how everything tasted homemade and comforting, with a nice balance of texture and seasoning. The menu offers a wide variety of options, so it's easy to try different dishes beyond just dumplings. Everything came out quickly, and the portions were quite satisfying. The atmosphere is casual and lively, which makes it a great spot for a quick meal or a relaxed dinner with friends. Overall, a solid choice in Cambridge if you're craving authentic Chinese dumplings. I would definitely come back again.

A dinner with my Korean friends revealed my current favorite Chinese restaurant in Boston!…read more Soup Steamed Dumplings Pork 小籠包: The dumplings were large, incredibly juicy, and the meat filling was tender and smooth. The seasoning was only slightly sweet, perfectly complementing the freshness of the meat. These were the best Xiaolongbao I've had in the US, although the skin was a bit soggy and unappetizing. Pork & Leeks Dumpling: My friend ordered these, opting for pan-fried dumplings. They were piping hot, incredibly fragrant, and the meat filling was tender. The chive flavor was mild, which is perfect since I don't like chives lol. A touch of vinegar was definitely needed to cut through the richness! Sliced Fish Szechuan Style: Calling them "sliced fish" is a bit of a stretch; "fish fillets" would be more accurate. They were probably made with basa fish, and the fish was incredibly tender, almost melting in your mouth. The broth was fragrant, and the numbing and spicy flavor was authentic, earning high praise from my friend from Sichuan. Lamb with Ginger & Scallions Onion: A perfectly good Beijing dish, but it was prepared with the feel of a Cantonese stir-fry, which suited my Cantonese palate perfectly. The lamb was incredibly tender, with no gamey taste, and stir-fried until the oil was visible but the sauce wasn't thickened. The sweetness of the onions and carrots added to the complex flavor. Sweet and Sour Pork Tenderloin: Just average, like a typical Shanghai style home-cooked meal. Nothing special to say. General Gao's Tofu 左宗豆腐: My first time trying the famous "General Tso" (I don't know why they call it General Gao) series of American Chinese cuisine. It felt similar to the technique used in Shanghainese "Kung Pao宮保." A slightly sweet and sour flavor with the aroma and mild spiciness of dried chili peppers, the ingredients were deep-fried and coated in a thick sauce. The tofu was overcooked, the edges were hard, and the sauce became a bit watery towards the end. This dish was just okay.
