Really enjoyed our stop at Nan Xiang Express. The soup dumplings were delicious and the food came out quickly. Great spot for a casual lunch in Chinatown. Only downside was the seating felt a little crowded, but overall a great experience!

what a good find! the food was amazing, great flavor. i like that you can order on your own at the little kiosk & can take your time. they bring the food over to you and then can leave whenever you're ready! very clean as well.

This restaurant is more of a fast-food experience than anything, but that's not to say the quality is lacking! They have a pretty extensive menu so there's something for everyone. At peak hours, dining inside the shop can be difficult, but people trickle in and out pretty often so you won't have to wait long. I love their beef filled scallion pancakes, which I almost always get! They are hefty and delicious, filled with a heaping portion of thinly sliced beef! I also like their soup dumplings, which I wouldn't say are the best, but are still enjoyable. They are always really busy, but staff are helpful if needed. I love this place, it just gets too busy sometimes and I think in Chinatown, there are other places that might be more worth your dollar!

wait... i like it!! don't have gourmet expectations, it's definitely no frills but maintains fast service, cleanliness, and relative affordability in a place like boston!! my wontons in peanut sauce were FIRE, filled me up, and $10 with t+t. portion size for veggie sides were generous too. this place makes it easy to get a nutritious and cultural meal for 2 under $30, and honestly what more can you ask for ??

Amazing "Express" location of one of my favorite Chinese restaurants! Portion sizes are solid and taste is very authentic. My favorite dish of the night was actually the basic veggie fried rice. No frills, just delicious healthy grub. The fried noodles were tasty and wonton soup was perfect to down, not overly salty at all like what you might find at some "authentic" restaurants. This was a takeout order but service was speedy enough. I'll definitely be back for more whenever I'm back in the area!

soup dumplings - 10/10 review soft, chewy, and hearty soup dumplings that i now crave every rainy day!! the filling was juicy and tasty and i enjoyed them with a little chili oil and soy sauce. absolutely no notes. i ordered on kiosk and so i have limited notes on service but it came out pretty fast. the restaurant was clean and the tables were well stocked with condiments.

everything was honestly so mid-- XLB and beef scallion pancake was prob the best out of everything we got, maybe a 6.5/10. Do not recommend the hot and sour soup at all 0/10 not even close to what it's actually supposed to taste like. The soy milk was also atrocious 3/10. You order at the kiosk and seat yourself, very casual, fast food vibe.

The must gets are the pork soup dumplings and the crispy bottom pork buns, but if you're into other things I'd also highly recommend the scallion pancakes and stir fry noodles with chicken!! I will be returning, everything was 10/10, and although it's not the most ideal dine-in situation my party of 3 was able to find a place to sit at one of the long tables as we waited for our food.

It's a nice place for a quick casual meal. We came on a Friday evening when it was very busy and no seats available because the spot is small. While we waited for our food, we walked around Chinatown and when we came back we were able to get a table. The food is not the best ever, but it's pretty good and not expensive.

Unfortunately, this restaurant was pretty disappointing. My bf and I ordered 3 items, shrimp fried rice, veggie noodle soup, and soup dumplings. We had to bus our own table, which is fine but for the price and the quality of food I don't think it was worth it. The food came out so quickly and didn't hear any cooking in the kitchen that we suspected the food was microwaved or reheated. Everything was in disposable containers and felt like cheap takeout. We paid almost $50 for food that tasted like instant noodle soup broth and microwaved rice. The soup dumplings were the best part. The veggie noodle soup was very mushroom heavy but was really oily and the noodles were really overcooked and mushy. I'm not sure if everything seemed designed for takeout because it's an "express" restaurant but you can definitely get better food somewhere else in Chinatown.

Nan Xiang Express is one of the only restaurants in Boston that serves stir-fried rice cakes. Everything comes in a red paper container, and the brand marketing is quite cute. There is very limited seating. The food is tasty, but it probably won't blow you out of the water.

Came around 4:30pm on a rainy Wednesday and it was pretty much empty. We ordered at the kiosk and our food and drinks were brought to our table no longer than five minutes later. They mentioned our soup dumplings would be coming out shortly. We waited 15 minutes before going up to check on our soup dumplings and lo and behold, they were ready and had been sitting forgotten in the back. Instead of nicely filled dumplings, we got these deflated disappointments with the tiniest bit of soup. The beef scallion pancakes were good, but there are much better places for soup dumplings in Chinatown.

    Hanna H.

I'm sad to say this spot was pretty disappointing! I've been to the full-service dine-in Nan Xiang in Flushing, NY, which I loved, but I won't be returning to this spot in Boston. First off, the soup dumplings were very mid. The quality of the dumpling wrapper, meat, flavor, and lack of juice was similar to what I could get in the frozen section of a supermarket. The fried rice cakes also tasted like they were mixed in really salty soy sauce that I could've made at home. Spicy peanut wontons were just okay, don't have too much to say on this one. The braised beef noodle soup was probably the best item we ordered. What we ordered: - Nan Xiang Signature Pork Soup Dumplings - Braised Beef Noodle Soup - Wonton in Spicy Peanut Sauce - Fried Rice Cakes

The braised pork belly was prepared really well; the sauce was decadent without tasting like a pile of sugar, and the meat itself was very tender. The crispy tofu was also great, lots of spices and a nice golden breaded crust made for a good vegan dish (but that's why I didn't get to try the peking duck...). And the pineapple beer was a fun drink, it's about 50/50 beer and pineapple juice so it was more of a cocktail than an actual beer. The line for a table was a chaotic experience. I know that popular restaurants are always a bit of a mess, especially those that don't take reservations. But this place was especially disorganized, it took a while to get seated fora party of two, and even then, it was a consolation bar spot. I hope they can get more organized in the future!

Every time I passed by, it was packed with customers and there was another long queue. This time, I specifically went on a weekday at lunchtime and managed to snag the last single seat. The food is definitely top-notch. Traditional Soup Dumplings (Pork): Dumplings were supposedly steamed to order, and I waited quite a while, but it was worth it! The soup inside was clean and brimming, each could fill an entire porcelain spoon. It was with the fragrance of chicken broth, light and umami, but not transparently sweet--just right. The meat filling was also tender and delicious, with no porky taste, which was especially rare in America. The only downside was that the skin was a bit thick and rough and hardened after steaming. The dipping sauce was ginger, soy sauce, and vinegar; I'm not sure if adding soy sauce is actually a traditional way to eat them-- I suppose Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang people often just simply use ginger and vinegar. Scallion Dry Noodles with Fried Egg: This was the first time I'd had sweet scallion oil dry noodles; it reminded me more of Huzhou-style gantiaomian乾挑麵(dry-tossed noodles). But coincidentally, I also really love that! The noodles were smooth and chewy, coated and infused with sauce, while without being watery. The seasoning was a simple, direct and rich sweet and savory flavor with the aroma of scallion oil. The scallions were fried perfectly-- until crispy and fragrant without being burnt or bitter. It was so delicious that I even ate all the scallions... I also specifically asked the restaurant to make runny-yolk fried eggs, which greatly enhanced the taste when mixed into the noodles.

Shanghai Classic Pork Pan-Fried Buns上海生煎饅頭: I was instantly hooked! It's hard to imagine finding such good pan-fried buns in the US. Almost every table ordered them, so they were all freshly made, piping hot. The bun was made with unleavened dough, making it chewy and refreshing, with a light, crispy bottom--not oily or hard. The meat filling was substantial and tender, with plenty of broth (see picture). It was sweeter than salty, incredibly umami. The chili oil was also very fragrant, and dipping it in Zhenjiang vinegar enhanced the flavor and cut through the greasiness. Shredded Pork & Preserved Vegetable Noodle Soup雪菜肉絲麵: The noodles were thin and round, with a soft, mushy texture. While the noodles were clearly machine-made, this isn't a problem in the Yangtze River Delta region; the issue was likely overcooking. The shredded pork were well-stirred, with tender meat, but the noodles lacked flavor. They had to be eaten with the pickled mustard greens雪菜 to be slightly salty, and the umami flavor was severely diluted. The tableware is all disposable, and tipping is not mandatory. Staff was very knowledgeable about each entree, and provided information about how entrees were cooked and served. Started with the Mama Chang Pork Dumplings, which were excellent, and the cauliflower appetizer (a little spicy, but very good). Liked the udon noodles with chicken and bok choy, although a little less red chili pepper would have suited my tastes better (good for those who like a bit of zing to their food). The lettuce wrap chicken was well worth the 20-minute wait. Finished with the lemon ginger mousse, which was very light. The fortune cookie on the mousse was fresh and crisp, so good that some thought it might have been baked at Joanne Chang's Flour Cafe and Bakery. The finish was extra nice, with a red lucky envelope with chocolates accompanying the check, an orange at each table (signs for good fortune in the New Year), and red decorations hanging in the restaurant to create a festive setting. I think my favorite of those was the eggplant dish - perfectly cooked and flavorful with ginger and soy. Wings were good too. The soups were nice I liked the hot n sour one. The lemongrass soup was a creamy one quite tasty but also quite filling and rich. For entrees, we ordered the roasted soy glazed salmon, the Indonesian fried rice, bok choy and surf and turf noodles. Everything was good. We were all so full and also had leftovers. But decided to order dessert too - everyone loved the vanilla bean ice cream (the menu described it as a parfait) with orange granita - really generous too - 3 scoops of ice cream and the orange sorbet which was more granular than a sorbet more like very finely crushed ice. Very refreshing! The banana caramel crème brûlée was really good too - nice and creamy. The lemon ginger mousse was very creamy but I thought had a bit too much of ginger. I think the deserts were hands down everyone's favorite part of the meal despite everyone pretty much denying they wanted any! Service was very friendly by our server Julie who was delightful! Gui fei gai (empress chicken) was decent, but a bit tough and not really a favorite of mine personally even though they are generally known for their whole chickens in various preparations. Their dau miu (pea shoots with garlic) was okay, but the garlic flavor did not really come through. Mui choy kau yuk (braised pork belly with preserved veggies) was quite salty and not as tender as I'd expect, but it had a lot of lean meat relative to the fat. The satay ngau yuk (satay beef) was flavorful, but somehow all of their pieces of beef were small and fragmented as opposed to bigger slices of beef that you typically get from this dish. Overall, I generally like this place, but it definitely isn't the same flavor wise as it once was from what I remember. Perhaps their cooks have changed over the years, but it is still an authentic restaurant with solid Canto cuisine.
