Saturday dim sum lunch
Truman W.

One of the best dim sum joints in Boston Chinatown, recommended by a Hong Konger friend. And she's absolutely right! The steamed dumplings are small, bite-size, fresh, expertly made. The rice noodle with scallion and dried shrimp is my favorite! The chicken feet look brown (no red coloring) but tasted completely on point. If you are a party of 1 or 2 you may be seated at a large round communal table.

A pretty small restaurant, parties of 1-2 are seated at larger round tables with some other guests which we were fine with. Service was good and quick. We got the pan fried white turnip cake, chicken feet, shrimp rice noodles, spare ribs with black bean sauce, and shrimp and chives dumplings, which totaled $47 with tip. All food was pretty good but nothing super special, just good classic dim sum. Would go again.

Windsor Dim Sum is my go-to spot for dim sum in Boston! It's one of those places where you go in, eat amazingly well, and get out quickly -- and honestly, that's part of the charm. The service is super fast, the food always hits the spot, and everything comes out fresh and delicious. There can be a bit of a wait during peak hours, but it's always worth it. If you're craving classic dim sum without the fuss, this is the place. Highly recommend!

Excellent dim sum offerings! Though on the smaller side (too small for circulating steam carts), they nevertheless have a large selection to choose from with pictures and descriptions. You order what you want from a sheet and it comes promptly, steaming hot and delicious. Service is good and attentive. My only quibble is that the prices seemed a little high to me ($6.99 per dish) - but then, it's been a while since I did dim sum and who knows, with inflation and tariffs, maybe that's the going rate these days. Cash only.

Great spot for authentic dim sum in Boston's Chinatown. The shrimp dumplings, shumai, and pork buns were fresh and delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. Service was quick, although the restaurant can get crowded and a bit noisy during busy hours. Overall, a great place for quality dim sum, and I'll definitely be back.

Solid spot for dimsum! All the items we got tasted quite good. The #26 Pan Fried White Turnip Cake was a huge hit among our group. The #44 Fried Shrimp Balls and #47 House Pan Fried Pork Dumplings were especially oily, but that's why there's hot tea. Just wish the portions could be bigger for some of the items

*CASH ONLY* Windsor Dim Sum is a Boston Chinatown staple. We've been coming here forever and the quality is consistently good. The main difference is the prices have increased a lot, yet their portions remained the same. Regardless, you can't go wrong with any of their staple dishes such as Siu Mai, Har Gow, Shrimp & Chive Dumplings, etc. When you go first thing in the morning, their dishes are piping hot and delicious. Dine-in is cash only, so make sure you have some handy.

I've been to lots of spots in Chinatown, but this was actually my first time here! My friend and I stopped in for a late lunch and shared a beef dish and a side of bok choy. I'd say the food was pretty standard for Chinese, nothing amazing, but not bad. That being said, I'd prefer Taiwan Cafe and some of the other options in the area. It's a pretty casual spot and the service is okay. I'd be happy to go back, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

Got here a little after noon on a Saturday and was initially told a 15-20 minute wait, but it ended up being so much shorter, less than 5 minutes. They don't have a place to wait, and they mention waiting outside on the street, but luckily I did not follow that advice and waited inside by the host desk and was able to hear my name being called. The service was fairly quick and while this place doesn't have cart service, it can be a nice change not having to wait for a cart to come around that has something you want.

Lori I.

Dim sum served all day. Small place with large round tables you might get placed on to share with others. You order your items by marking it down on the paper. The food was pretty good but not spectacular. I don't think people come to Boston to eat Chinese food but there's only so much lobster and Italian food you can eat before you just want something different. They PREFER cash...so it's not strictly cash only even though they tell you that.

Good dim sum, fast service, and very reasonable prices (~$6/dish). The place was pretty much full, but we got seated right away at the communal table for 2 separate weekend lunches. My favorites are the fried mochi pork dumplings and salted egg yolk sesame ball, but I liked everything we tried. I'm not picky about dim sum though--and you shouldn't be either!

Dim sum: egg tart, shumai, chicken feet, Steamed Shrimp Rice Noodle

I've never had dim sum at night before. We enjoyed the food! The dim sum was not too salty. The egg custard could be sweeter. The vegetables we got were too expensive and a bit flavorless, but I want veggies to balance all the meat and carbs we were eating. The table service was fine, but I don't appreciate: 1. Cash Only, no credit cards even though I believe there was signage posted for "Visa." 2. Being pressured to tip. 3. The waitress trying to seat us right next to other customers. We left one seat between us and strangers, but we can tell that the waitress was trying to push us all uncomfortably closer together. It's already a pretty awkward situation to eat with strangers at the same round table, and to try to squish us shoulder to shoulder-- very inconsiderate. 4. Charge for take-out bag. This won't be the last time we will be in Boston, but a two-star rating (for mandatory tip and mediocre service) means we don't want to come back (and won't be coming back) despite the good (but not amazing) food.

Hannah S.

The food was amazing hands down. i didn't have anything bad to say. the service is quick. we got in and out. it may not be the dim sum i'm used to where they roll carts around. they gave a menu and a pencil and i marked what i wanted. it was delicious and we stopped by after flying all day. it was well worth it. everything pictured, we spent $180

How many bathroom they have or stalls for female?

There is one small tiny bathroom on the way into the kitchen that everybody shares.

What are the hours for dim sum and is it menu or cart service?

Dim sum is served entire time restaurant is open and you order off the menu. Their shumai and chicken feet are awesome!!

Is it open for indoor dining?

Yes

Do they still only do take out - can you eat in?

Yes!!

How much are the plates for dimsum? There's no prices on the menu 😱

It's based on the type of dim sum you get. But they are roughly 3.99-5.99. Solo you'd probably spend no more than $16.

When I went on a weekend morning, they had prepackaged fluffy breads, Chinese pastries, and Chinese breakfast items such as sesame balls and breakfast churro (you tiao). All items were labeled in both Chinese and English and the shop employees were both Chinese-speaker and English-speaker friendly. I got two mooncakes and a box of mini wife cafes. All the items I got were tasty and not too sweet. Maybe it was on me for getting the mini wife cakes, but I wish there was actually more sweetness and filling inside the flaky pastry. Roasted pork and wonton noodles ($12.95) - the pork inside the wonton was black and had a terrible smell. The boneless spareribs also looked dark and not fresh. The server refused to cancel it on the bill. She insisted it was freshly made and said it was just the way they marinated the meat. It was not edible. Who would take the risk of food poisoning?

My parents owned the spot years ago when it was Timmy Cafe. They sold the spot to Laurence's mom and she in turn sold it to him. The space is bright and the food is fire. There's not a lot of seating but there's a steady stream of people ordering to go. Laurence will also host pop up experiences for local chefs. My daughter loves their plain congee. I'm a big fan of the Rubato Fun Fun. The brisket in there tells you that Laurence knows how to make Chinese brisket the right way. They also have an amazing brisket steamed bao. The Fun Fun is loaded with everything you would want on a cheung fun dish mixed together. The highlight for me and keeps me coming back is the bolo fried chicken sandwich. There's so much going on between the sweet, flaky, and fluffy bolo bao, filled with a generous serving of a delectable fried chicken and saucy slaw. You get a complex mixture of flavors and textures in every bite. It can get messy, so lean forward and eat over your dish. I love that Laurence is often in the store and giving time to the fans of his TV cooking competitions. His team are also super competent and kind. I used Rubato catering for an event and the participants are still raving about the spread months later. Don't sleep on this local celebrity spot!

I heard about Rubato's for 5-6 years now. Every time I don't get to go in Boston, my expectations…read moreand anticipation for it just increases. The food is solid and overall better than Bayao imo. It was just my fault for having overly high expectations. Also I was frustrated about the service. They have a seating policy where you have to order before getting a seat. The sign is in small font, lots of words printed on a piece of paper, propped next to the cashier. My friend and I weren't the only ones who didn't notice the rules and plopped ourselves on a chair before getting kicked out by the cashier. We weren't upset at that. The problem was when we changed our order from eat-in to to-go due to the seating policy and not seeing additional available seats, the cashier guy didn't update it in the order. We saw them prepping our order for eat-in, so we spoke behind the counter that we meant to have it to-go. The cashier guy responded in a rude tone. They should do a better job of communicating the seating policy and managing their 6 seats. They could put the sign with less words and bigger letters at the door, steps to entrance, and under menu. They could also put a divider to make sure people don't cross into the seats before reaching the cashier. Since we had to order food to-go, things were not at its peak by the time we ate it, but I think it was solid given the delay. Also not sure if transferring the food from eat-in plates and bowls to takeout ones would affect the composition and therefore taste and texture. We ordered: HK milk tea, soy milk, Rubato's fun fun, salt and pepper chicken with rice, Sampan congee, and a lava custard steam bao HK milk tea tastes legit but it was too mild - not the same as watery. At least it didn't feel rough on the tongue. Less sweet was a bit too sweet for me given the weaker tea strength. I think the mildness makes it appeal to a wider audience. Bayao's milk tea is punchier with sharper tea flavors while also being rougher on the tongue. I can't decide which one I prefer more. I like it more than the soy milk though. Soy milk does taste homemade. It tastes chalky (flavor not texture) but not green. Rubato's fun fun is the HK street food version of cheung fun rice noodles where it's the plain rolls of cheung fun with curry fishballs and beef stew. I like the cheung fun. It's silky smooth with a slight chew without being tough or rough or mushy, better than Bayao. The order only came with two fishballs which had a slight bounce (would like more) and bit of sweetness (also would like more). The curry sauce was overpowered by sauce from the beef stew. The beef stew tasted right too, although mild, but the biggest problem is with the meat being a bit tough and dry (edible but can be better). Salt and pepper chicken with rice is my favorite dish of the meal. The chicken meat can improve on juiciness and tenderness but at least it wasn't too dry. The batter was thicker than I'd like but at least airy and crunchy (despite being cold). The skin stayed dry despite taking it to-go which makes me wonder if the food was room temperature to start. The "salt and pepper" aspect of it was closer to "fried garlic and chili flakes" type of situation. Nevertheless I very much enjoyed that flavor and abundance of seasoning which generously coated each bite of chicken and rice. The rice was properly fluffy and not too hard or soft despite being cold when I ate it. Also I was actually a bit surprised by how little rice there was both absolutely and relatively. Sampan congee was something I was skeptical about because it looks like they only sprinkled toppings on top of a plain congee. I know it's hard to expect to have a pot for each variety of congee, but sometimes you need to boil things together to have the ingredient flavors seep into the congee. I like how the peanuts weren't too hard or soft. The dried fish and dried scallops were sufficient in flavor and quantity to add flavor to this congee. However they were too fishy for my liking, not necessarily sweet. I experimented adding the salt and pepper chicken's garlic chili seasoning into the congee and it was amazing. Overall I was impressed with the congee texture too. Since there were toppings mixed inside I don't necessarily have a full view of it plain but it was smooth with softened partial rice grains without being a goopy mess. Lava custard steamed bao was all cold and wet from condensation (came in a bag) by the time I ate it. At least the skin wasn't too soggy and it was fluffy inside even when cold. The filling was too sweet for me (I know it's supposed to be sweet) and wish there was more/stronger salted egg yolk flavor. They had some steamer baskets behind one of the counters but it looked dry (without) steam and cold. I didn't see if they grabbed my bao from there but I'm skeptical if they even keep the baos warm.
