Food is pretty good and servers are attentive. Very big on the inside. Rice rolls aren't as good as Mings, but still yummy.

We've been here a few times, and although others have given bad reviews, we have always had an amazing experience. There are at least 10 different dumplings, and every thing we got was great! Many servers came with carts, but sometimes it was hard to figure out what things were delicious. Our grandchildren love the food, especially the bao, spring rolls and shrimp dumplings. It can definitely accommodate picky eaters. Overall, everything is nice, and the imperial designs --murals and bas reliefs --are very impressive, thought the outside entrance and outer building is a little unappealing. The giant space can accommodate any amount of people!

i went here for dim sum with a few friends on a sunday. within 5 minutes of sitting down 3 different ladies with carts came to our table so we could pick what we wanted from their carts! everything was hot and fresh- super tasty. the staff are all very friendly and the restaurant is beautiful inside (it used to be a theater i think)

I have to say, the interior of this building was absolutely stunning! The converted theatre works perfectly for the dim sum vibes and the preserved architecture and traditional art contributes to this welcoming, unique atmosphere! Additionally, at dinner time this is a great place to come if you want a quick table, friendly service, and some plates to share. I can't speak for the morning/afternoon options, but I will say I was a little disappointed with their limited dim sum menu for dinner time. On the other hand, their regular menu is extensive offering all the traditional dishes you might crave! Overall, though, I wouldn't say I was overly impressed with anything I tried, it was certainly satisfying, but at the same time could've been better (I'm sure there's some other really delicious options in the area). I thought the cook on the meats was a little overdone, and though everything was flavorful, nothing really blew me away. For the price, I can't say this spot is completely worth it at least for dinner, but I'd encourage anyone to give them a try earlier in the day (which are their more popular hours I've heard). It's certainly worth a trip at least once to experience the magical and breathtaking decor inside! Really, that's what makes a stop here worth it, so I definitely do plan to come back and try their traditional dim sum menu

If you are going for dim sum in Boston Chinatown, Empire Garden has one of the larger dining rooms, and still has the ladies pushing carts so you can get a good look before you order, which is particularly great if you don't remember what your favorites are named. We ordered up the popular ha gow (steamed shrimp dumplings), ha cherng (shrimp steamed noodles dressed with soy sauce), siew mei (steamed pork dumplings), before getting some fried items. I took a walk to the stationary hot counter, and scored a plate of fresh leafy greens to round out our carby meaty meal. We also ordered a plate of chow mein, and found ourselves satisfied. If you're new to the dim sum scene, when you are seated, they'll ask you for a choice of two teas, which will come in a pot to share. Lift the tea pot lid for free refills. As you select your items from the carts, the ladies will ask for your paper order slip so they can stamp the number of dishes you ordered per category. When you are done, one of the other workers will take the slip to prepare your itemized bill. On this February visit, it was $1.35 per person for the tea, the veggies were $9.85, small plates were $6.25 each, and medium plates (which most of our choices were) $6.85. Everything was good. The dumplings well filled with skins of acceptable thickness.

I came here for the first time in many years and sat down for dinner. Instead of the large open area that's usually open for dim sum, we got seated in a side room with windows overlooking Chinatown. For food, we ordered fried rice, Japanese tofu, a whole duck, BBQ Char Siu, fried pork and calamari appetizer, and a vegetable platter. The food was surprisingly good and fresh! I would definitely recommend the Japanese tofu as it's a more unique dish. For dessert, the sesame balls were excellent. The serving sizes are generous and probably a quarter or so more than other restaurants. The service was quick and prompt. The best thing was that for a party of 6, the bill came out to only $160 and we had tons of leftover food! That's awesome in this economy. My biggest complaint is the ambiance as the entrance once you walk inside and the opening of the dining area seems dirty and old and in need of my upgrade.

This was my first time having real dim sum and I couldn't have picked a better place! Everything was so delicious but my favorites were the bao and sesame balls. The decor is so beautiful and unique and service was very fast!

The amphitheater interior is very unique. Food itself is on par with most Chinese restaurants but is more on the expensive side. I think you could find the same if not better Chinese food at other places, but that is not to say that this place is bad at all. Servers were not the nicest people, but food came out pretty quickly.

This place was so amazing, and to be turned from a theater to this spacious dim sum restaurant. Serving up some delicious, authentic Chinese cuisine in Boston's Chinatown. The food was made fresh & steaming hot as it reached the table. Service was fast & accurate to your liking. Chicken and broccoli was the best I've ever had. All the fresh ingredients to the tender cuts of chicken. You have to get here early if you wanna see the dim sum carts going around. #chinatown #boston #dimsum #chickenandbroccoli #goodeatsinct #foodporn #foodie #fooddestination #travelingandeating #empiregarden #baobuns #currynoodles

My family and I have been going here for years. It's a huge restaurant on the second floor; there is an elevator. They'll seat you in a massive dining room with high ceilings; looks like it used to be an opera back in the day. During lunchtime, they have dim sum in a push cart. Each cart has different types of dim sum items. A few of my favorites are, fried taro balls, shu mai, pork bao buns, shrimp in flat rice noodles, shrimp dumplings, and chicken feet. I have tried their congee (rice porridge) and it was bland. They give you complimentary jasmine tea. Pro tip: if you like spicy, ask for the chili oil. Service was always good and fast. We've been when they stopped serving dim sum; we had general Tso chicken, fried rice, and crab rangoons, the food was decent. The cocktails were strong too. Overall, always a good experience and our go to spot for dim sum.

Does it hold birthday parties for a group of 20?

The place is so large. If you make reservations, I'm sure they can accommodate you.

How's the parking? My father is in a wheelchair, but can walk just not for long distance. Would this be a good choice?

They offer discounted parking at 660 Washington St which an underground public lot. I overheard the cost was $7. The restaurant is up a floor so you may want to confirm their elevator is working (it was today). There were many walkers and strollers…

Is the dim sum only at certain times? I'm looking to get some around 4:30/5 on a Saturday!

They serve dim sum Saturday nights. I'm here at 10 pm and just ordered dim sum items

So after looking up local Chinese joints to eat at, Dynasty popped up. They also offer street parking so that is what sold me on this joint. Considering Boston's Chinatown looks pretty run down, you should never judge a book by it's cover. Walking in, this joint is really bright and clean. The young man working the register greeted us and got my daughter and I a table. The big list of food items was dropped off and we were ready to get the party started! We ordered a handful of things! It's been a while since we have had dim sum so we were ready to put in work. Our food was starting to slowly trickle out. We started off with the congee. It came out pretty fast since it was probably made earlier waiting to be served. Shortly after the rest of our dumplings were making their way to our table. The congee was simple, savory and comforting. It tasted like my childhood. The fried shrimp rolls were tasty, crispy and savory. I have had similar fried shrimp dumplings like this served with a sauce similar to walnut shrimp. That sauce would have been killer with these rolls. The long rice noodles were silky and filled with char sui. The sauce was more vinegar than sweet which is how I have normally had it. Still good! Har gaw and shu mai were fabulous once they dropped off soy and chili oil to dip them in. The turnip cake will always be one of my favorites. My daughter enjoyed the soup dumplings and the rice in lotus leaf. I was too full to try them. Customer service was ok. They got you what you needed but not a lot of exchange in conversation. I feel like most dim sum experiences are like that. The food was so good! I enjoyed every bit of it with my daughter. Parking might be free but very limited and challenging to find. I'm still happy we got to check this joint out and have a great meal here!

After moving from its original large dining hall to a newer location on Essex Street, the restaurant has a more modern and compact layout while still keeping the familiar dim sum experience. Even with the smaller space, it remains a busy spot, especially on weekend mornings when the dining room fills up quickly with groups looking for a classic dim sum meal. I came here for the traditional dim sum service, and the menu covers all of the staples you would expect. Dishes like shu mai, har gow, rice noodle rolls, and steamed pork buns were easy to find as the carts made their way around the dining room. There is something nostalgic about choosing dishes directly from the carts as they pass by, and it adds to the experience in a way that ordering from a menu cannot quite replicate. That said, I found the food itself to be a little inconsistent. Some dishes arrived fresh and enjoyable, while others felt like they had been sitting a bit longer before reaching the table. The familiar dim sum classics were satisfying enough, but the quality and flavors varied from plate to plate, making the overall meal less memorable than I had hoped. It was still an enjoyable way to sample a variety of dishes, but not every item stood out. The service matched the fast-paced atmosphere of a busy dim sum restaurant. Once seated, the meal moved along quickly as carts circulated through the dining room and staff kept everything running efficiently. During peak hours it can get loud and crowded, so it is worth arriving earlier if you prefer a quieter experience. Overall, Hei La Moon is still a recognizable part of Boston's Chinatown and offers the traditional cart-style dim sum experience that has become increasingly difficult to find. While I appreciated the atmosphere and the chance to enjoy classic dim sum in a longstanding neighborhood restaurant, I felt the food quality was inconsistent enough that I would probably explore some of the newer dim sum spots in Boston before returning.

We came for a family dinner and of course Grandma Ding was with us in her wheelchair. We only smashed into a few chairs in the big, crowded dining room. And fortunately other customers were understanding while the staff was helpful and accommodating. The small, curious child running around the dining room without parental supervision didn't get hurt when I ran him over. The menu was huge so it took a long time to order with Grandma asking questions about every item. I could see that the waitstaff was used to quick orders and rapid food delivery to the table, but the waiter remained kind and patient. He also repeated his answers loudly when she couldn't understand his English and because she didn't have her hearing aides turned up. We finally ordered a giant wonton soup, eggplant with garlic sauce, a shrimp dish, and orange chicken; all to share. Everything was fresh, hot, tasty and delicious. Grandma Ding did have to ask for the soup to be heated up because she likes it to be scalding. The dining room is worn and dishes were flying in and out as items were served and cleared. It's definitely a place for family meals, not one for an engagement proposal or romance. Perfect for our evening. Portions are generous and prices competitive with other restaurants in the area. These were poor and flavorless (we've bought MUCH tastier ones in H-Mart and the 88). The eggplant was very tasty, not too garlicky, and was an enormous portion. It was a bit greasy, but not too bad. The chicken with cashews was bland and boring. We dined there with a good friend and commented about the great service - fast and efficient. As I mentioned, the portion size was significantly larger that most restaurants these days. The prices were a bit high, especially considering the barebones atmosphere - but this is Newton Center, and we expected this. In short, I won't return to Ding's - there are lots of better choices.
