I call my Mom Grandma Ding because she's a little ditzy. And she likes to tag along on family outings like a dinghy attached to a bigger boat, sometimes in front, sometimes in the wake, so when we found this place on Yelp it was fate. We came for a family dinner and of course Grandma Ding was with us in her wheelchair. We only smashed into a few chairs in the big, crowded dining room. And fortunately other customers were understanding while the staff was helpful and accommodating. The small, curious child running around the dining room without parental supervision didn't get hurt when I ran him over. The menu was huge so it took a long time to order with Grandma asking questions about every item. I could see that the waitstaff was used to quick orders and rapid food delivery to the table, but the waiter remained kind and patient. He also repeated his answers loudly when she couldn't understand his English and because she didn't have her hearing aides turned up. We finally ordered a giant wonton soup, eggplant with garlic sauce, a shrimp dish, and orange chicken; all to share. Everything was fresh, hot, tasty and delicious. Grandma Ding did have to ask for the soup to be heated up because she likes it to be scalding. The dining room is worn and dishes were flying in and out as items were served and cleared. It's definitely a place for family meals, not one for an engagement proposal or romance. Perfect for our evening. Portions are generous and prices competitive with other restaurants in the area. Parking on the street is the only difficulty, particularly when you have a nonagenarian to get into the restaurant. We will definitely be back. read more

I will definitely come back for this. Got takeout from here during the week and it was pretty good! I was craving some dim sum and this is an especially good option for dim sum items without having to commit to driving down to Chinatown in Boston. Their menu has all of the staples, and I ordered the sticky rice in lotus leaf as well as the tofu skin wrapped pork. The tofu skin wrapped pork was delicious - it had a nice and savory sauce and was pack filled with meat and veggies. It was exactly like the downtown dim sum - a really great option for the area! The sticky rice was also decent but it felt like the rice was a little chewy in some places like it was an older batch or perhaps frozen too long. Still, the taste was good and the inside had BBQ pork which I hadn't had in this dish as much before. Overall: we ordered only one thing and it was all we needed. The coconut chicken hot pot which is what pretty much every other table ordered. The only downside is how expensive it is coming in at a minimum of $45 with veggies and noodles bringing it closer to $75 final bill for two people. Food: feeling like winter got you down? Try the hotpot that has the hearty chicken broth taste and the soul purifying feel from the coconut. The slight sweetness and flavor from the coconut adds so much. I also highly recommend eating the coconut after as well! We ordered it with their mi fung which is the kinda noodle you want with this dish! Ambience/Decor/Service: think classic Chinese banquet style restaurant in a slightly smaller space. I appreciate the feel of real chopsticks rather than bamboo. I was visiting my family from overseas and tonight we decided to have a meal at a new restaurant and I'm so glad we had the chance to try this place out. The size and space of the restaurant is reasonable. The front portion had windows looking out to the street and the back was more spacious for bigger groups. The atmosphere was relaxing and nice. The service was great. Thank you for our server (I forgot his name) as he was phenomenal and we truly appreciate all his hard work. The flavors were perfect as we like simple yet delicious dishes. As someone who craves dim sum often, but it's not as accessible to me, Ding's Kitchen certainly satisfies my craving! I went to Ding's Kitchen on Sunday morning right when it opened. It was already filling up quickly and luckily I was able to be seated. The restaurant provided a menu with dim sum listings accompanied by pictures. I checked marked a few dishes and then dim sum was served hot and fresh to the table. It wasn't a traditional push cart experience. I enjoyed everything I ate, especially the har gow, siu mai, and turnip cake with xo sauce (highly recommend!) The dumplings were really juicy with great taste. And the turnip cakes with xo sauce were flavorful with stir fried bean sprout and scallions, topped with jalapeños and fried pork bits. I almost ordered a second serving because it was so good. Since the restaurant was busy on the weekend, the service was a bit slow. However, I appreciated that the servers apologized and check in regularly. Everyone was so nice. The restaurant has plenty of tables and comfortable atmosphere where many family gatherings and catch up conversations can be held. The location offers plenty of street parking, a parking lot across the street, and in the back. A tip is to go early since Dim Sum is regularly eaten on weekends with small and large parties. I usually come in here with family or do a take out with friends. but this week i called in prior at 10:00 on Thursday and they say they were closed- one hour before they officially closed on maps . I ordered from somewhere else no big deal. I called in a week before 10pm around 7pm before. I called in and ordered about 4 dishes - 2 were the main dish and 2 were the appetizers. I usually order a marinated crispy duck tongue and it comes with chinese broccoli. I was saving my food the next day for work and ended up CHIPPING my TOOTH on the VEGETABLES!!! I thought it was a really crispy garlic, so I kept on chewing and ended up chipping my TOOTH very badly with SAND. I called in less than a week aka today and told them about how I chipped my tooth with the UNWASHED veggies. The recipient said they would speak to the manger and asked me to call back. so I did. They concluded that I needed a receipt to restore credit and that I should have called the next day. I understand given the circumstances of the rules. You do have to pay the meter, but there are plenty of options, right in the heart of Newton Center. This used to be Jumbo restaurant. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We ordered plenty of family style food while almost everyone else ordered hot pot. The place is as clean as other Asian restaurants...it was comfortable. The hot tea was good, and the food was good too. Standouts to call out were the garlic chicken. I was thinking there was more but that's actually it. The rest of the dishes were good too, just nothing worthy of calling out. Food is fresh and tasty and comes out FAST. For 11 of us, the bill came out to be just over $300. Took the family here for lunch and the service staff was visibly pissed off to see us. The guy taking our order kept looking away while we're ordering, as if he didn't want to be there. At point one, he literally handed the utensils to another staff to say "here you do it". This restaurant was closed for several months due to failing the health department inspection. As of late, this spot has been one of my faves for good authentic Cantonese food in the Newton area. Definitely has some nostalgic tastes and vibes, compared to some of the other spots I've been to these days - plus service is usually pretty quick and friendly! It can be pretty busy at times, but it's definitely worth a try in my honest and humble opinion. For their food, I've gotta say that their specials are usually a good choice if you're having a hard time deciding - as they've got quite the extensive menu. Came for late lunch / early dinner. Around 4pm. Seated right away. Even at that time, there were like 5 or 6 other tables occupied so it was not exactly quiet. Ordered everything shown in pictures. Everything was good. What stood out to me was the roasted duck. We got it whole. Love the taste and moist meat. Sweet and sour pork was also unique compared to other Chinese places. It is good. We got the fujin fried rice, which was interesting. I never had a fried rice that is saucy but we looked it. Saucy toppings were smooth. Everything else is pretty typical of a Chinese restaurant. Lobster, salt and pepper silverfish, Chinese cauliflower, fried milk, rice, and red bean dessert soup. These were also good but not as unique compared to other Chinese restaurants. Personally, my least favorite was the pork intestines with pickled vegetables. The intestines are such an acquired taste. Some people I was with, loved it. Overall, great authentic Chinese restaurant for dinner. So far, I think it is better than the closest competitor, joyful garden in Watertown. I would come back to try their dim sum. read more

I wish I took a picture of my meal , the menu said jumbo shrimp, I got one step up from bait shrimp. I believe it's the same restaurant as before, they just changed their name and tax ID. That being said everything is cut back. Fried shrimp dish, chicken fingers, scallion pancake and tea $50+ . Even the duck sauce was watered down . Kinda a turn off. Wait staff somewhat helpful. I have been here twice for large family gatherings. This place is pretty busy, obviously very busy for Chinese New Year, so reservations were made in advance and they hurried us a bit for the next round of tables(this wasn't the case the first time we went in the Fall). Parking was fairly easy especially compared to the crowded streets of Boston Chinatown. Our favorite(which a lot of other tables got) was a lobster fried rice. The essence of lobster was infused throughout the dish. Another favorite was a "three treasure salt pepper dish" with fried pork, fried calamari, and fried shrimp. The pork was perfectly crispy without being overly dried. Con is that it is pricier than an average Chinese restaurant in the area charging things such as $2 per bowl of white rice and charging for tea(which the tea is typically complimentary, it was $10 for the pot). There weren't as many leftovers that I would expect for the amount we ordered which maybe just meant how delicious it was! I don't really think we had a bad dish so far and worthwhile to try. read more

After reading so many positive reviews about their dim sum, I decided to give it a try--but I was very disappointed. First of all, the dim sum wasn't fresh. The rice rolls, for example, didn't seem freshly made; they were chewy and tasted like they had been sitting in the fridge for a while. Ding's is a great spot to grab food in Newton Centre. We ordered dim sum through their large menu from their website for Sunday afternoon. Some of the dishes included rice noodles, scallion pancakes, turnip cakes, baos, clams, and noodles. The pickup service was easy and on time and everything was packaged well depending on the dish. The classic dim sum dishes including ha gao and siu mai were steamed nicely and had plenty of filling inside. The rice noodles were cooked well and the sesame balls with lotus paste were perfectly crispy on the outside and had a good amount of filling on the inside. The scallion pancakes became a bit soggy but still had a good flavor to them. This was a satisfying and filling lunch and I would return to Ding's to try out their wide menu of items for another family gathering. read more

ENVIRONMENT: Spacious restaurant with bright lighting and nice big glass windows. There is a bar with 2 TVs, 3 seats. Tables range in size from small (2-4 seats), medium (7-8 seats), to large (10-12+). Medium and large tables are circular with lazy susans, small ones are rectangular and have no lazy susans. Menus have lots of photos and have Chinese and English text. SERVICE: Servers speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. 2 plates were a little dirty but server promptly exchanged them at request. Our server was very charismatic and patient. There is a hot pot option for dinner (our party did not do this); hot pot is done by providing guests with a portable burner and a pot. FOOD: We came here for 开年饭 and overall had a good meal! 2 dishes weren't amazing but we liked everything else: Honey BBQ Pork / Char Siu - 蜜汁叉烧 More sweet than savory, but unfortunately kind of on the dry side. It came out room temperature. There was more sauce/glaze to dip it in on the plate but it was still not the best in terms of 叉烧. Crab Meat Fish Maw Soup - 蟹肉鱼肚汤 This is one of those soups that has corn starch added to it to thicken it, and I personally am not really a fan of these texture-wise. Contained a good amount of crab meat and fish maw as well as egg white. The fish maw's unique soft chewy/crunchy texture was there, but unfortunately the soup was kind of bland. Chicken This was the favorite of the table! The chicken's skin was crispy and the meat (even the thicker white meat parts) was juicy, and the minced garlic on the top went with it so well. This stuff is awesome with rice. My sister claims that this is the best-cooked chicken she's had so far. This was the only dish we fully finished (don't worry, everything else will be leftovers). Salted Egg Deep-Fried Fish - 黄金白饭鱼 I liked this dish, but it was a little weird because the batter was not really crispy (it was a bit damp/soggy) and I could not taste any salted egg in it at all. However, the fish were really hot when they came out and the meat was surprisingly soft and even flaky. Just enough salt, good with the rice. Clay Pot Garlic Frog Legs - 蒜子田鸡煲 There wasn't very much meat on the frog legs, but the meat that WAS there was very tender. Some small bits of meat that broke off were a little chewier but that might just be a consequence of smaller meat = overcooking more likely. I felt like the other things in the pot (onion, charred garlic, scallions, mushrooms) outnumbered the frog itself, but they tasted good. Eggplant We got this eggplant vegetarian and without garlic/onion, so it wasn't in its "intended" form, but it was still really flavorful. The eggplant was nice and soft, and it came with snap peas, sliced carrots and the type of tofu that is firm on the outside but soft inside. Pea Shoots We got these without garlic. Cooked well and good crunch on the stems. I like pea shoots and these were done solidly. Walnut Shrimp - 核桃虾 Shrimp was decently crispy and pretty juicy inside, and the sauce amount was good and not overpowering. Broccoli florets were soft and stems were a bit hard, but that's pretty much standard for this dish anyway. I think the walnuts could have been more crispy and could have had more of a glaze on them. I like this dish and this one was pretty good, mostly because of the shrimp. Red Bean Sago Soup - 豆沙 I think they probably have this sitting in a pot to be served; it's pretty watery and the tapioca balls are basically dissolved already (you can see them but when you eat a spoonful it's like they're not there). However, this is the complementary "bonus dessert" so I don't mind. read more

Excellent. The dul miu (pea pod leaves) were nicely cooked with high wok hei. The mustard green soup with pork and salty egg had a nice flavor to it, though I would have preferred smaller cuts. The seafood mix on top of tofu was quite nice - it was also placed on a bamboo leaf which provided a bit of flavor. The tofu texture was so fascinating; it was not super soft (definitely not silky) but it held together well enough and still had a smooth feeling / surface. The chicken with bitter melon black bean sauce was excellent. The bitter melon bitter flavor came through, and the chicken pieces were somehow rather tender. If you're looking for authentic Chinese cuisine without making a trip to Chinatown, then this is the place. Came here on a Wednesday night and the place was not packed. But on the weekends, they said they get really busy and will have a wait. We got their signature fresh coconut chicken hot pot (fresh coconut cut into the pot, boiled with chicken and any other side vegetables you would like to order for a separate charge). The server will tell you to cook the chicken about 15 minutes or so, don't over cook it as it'll make the chicken dry and chewy. Not a super wow dish but the simple flavors goes well together and with the dipping sauce (soy sauce, garlic, lemon) We also got the filet fish in spicy chili sauce. This was not overly spicy compared to other places. Not a ton of fish pieces but very generous with the vegetables. They have a large menu with a lot of authentic Chinese restaurant staples so I will be back to try more items read more
