Great food and service. Enjoyed the lobster special immensely. After 15 years in So Cal we moved back to metro Boston recently and Bernard is still the place to go to!

Upscale Chinese joint, but you can probably guess that from it not being called "Bernie's." Stylistically, neither old school nor authentic Chinese, but more of a modern spin encompassing elements from both. Some sticker shock here--the prices are quite high--but the quality is generally worth it, with some items exhibiting wow factor. Nice atmosphere, professional service, and food created on a much higher plane than your typical takeout joint. Egg Rolls: Interestingly, they're made with beef and not pork. So the flavor isn't as intense, but the construction is still wonderful, with a crunchy, flavorful outer shell and an inner filling with crunchy celery and cabbage, along with the understated beef. Dipped into the duck sauce and mustard, still a pleasure. Pork Spareribs: Now THIS is the reason to come here. If you order only one item (and heck, you might only be able to afford one item), make sure it is this. They're babyback ribs, which isn't as common as the more typical spares from the belly. A less likely cut to be moist, but here they're beyond moist, reaching deep into juicy territory. The crusts are generously lacquered with a red glaze. A triumph of flavor and texture, these are one of the best renditions (if not THE best) of Chinese ribs I've ever had, and they've been repeatably excellent. Boneless Spareribs: Same great glaze, plentiful portion, good thickness, and VERY juicy. A little fatty in some spots, but not to the extent that it was an issue. Tender and delicious. Also among the best I've had. Pork Fried Rice: Cindy Crawford had a mole but she was still beautiful. Bernard's has lackluster pork fried rice, but still a great Chinese restaurant. No need to mince words: the rice here is too light, which might be fine for the more upscale entrées, but accompanying any of the old-school selections (most notably, the lobster sauce), it just doesn't cut it. Shrimp and Lobster Sauce: I love that you have a choice between the white sauce (a New York thing) and the dark sauce (a New England thing). The dark sauce version (really the only way to have it) was very gentle of texture, dark but not overly dark of color, and nicely flavored with black bean sauce and other subtle spices. Some peas thrown in, but not a problem. Not gloppy, not salty, just very tasty and healthier than you typically get. Not my #1 but easily among my top half dozen or so. The shrimp were plentiful and of medium size, cooked to a good snap. General Tso's Chicken: I tried this on a combination plate at lunchtime, and had low expectations, but this was surprisingly great. The chicken was of very high quality, and very juicy under the crisp batter that was lightly applied. The sauce had more oomph flavorwise than most, without being overly gloppy. Some Thai chili peppers gave it unexpected legitimate heat (let's face it, places always say this dish is spicy but it almost never is). Sizzling Chicken with Black Bean Sauce: Minimal sizzle but exceptionally tender chicken, again high quality, cut into large pieces. Good flavor to the black bean sauce, and not too salty. This dish is 99% meat and can go a long way. Udon Noodles with Vegetables: Thick. Lightly sauced. VERY slippery. Mostly broccoli and carrots. Not an exciting dish, but it's a way of getting some vegetables in along with a starch that's better than their too-light-for-me fried rice. Probably wouldn't get it again. Bernard's is the kind of food you can enjoy almost guilt-free, because it's clean and natural and won't leave you feeling gluttonous or regretfully queasy. You can still respect yourself (if perhaps not your spending) the next morning. Still, there's plenty of flavor, and for the right situation, this is the right place, even with fried rice that isn't quite up to the standards of the fantastic ribs, chicken, lobster sauce, and other entrees. For any devotee or all styles of Chinese, this is a must.

I got takeout from this place recently and ordered the steamed wontons in hot pepper and peanut sauce and Mongolian beef. I have always been a fan of the spicy wontons in peanut sauce and they never disappoint! The sauce is so creamy and I usually pour the remaining peanut sauce over white rice to finish it off. The Mongolian beef is also good but I wish they gave more veggies in the dish. The beef portion was very generous though.

Great fortune. We shall see lol.

Went here for lunch. If you're looking for the place you went to as a kid on Christmas, this is it, although an upscale and pricier version. Alas it also is not as tasty. Alone, I sat at the bar so service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the shrimp with lobster sauce (white sauce - the classic) lunch special. With a spring roll and fried rice. The portion was much larger than I could eat. Hot and sour soup was nicely spicy but the mushrooms in it were raw. That's ok as I like them but that's not what I had way back when. And there were minimal cloud ear mushrooms. The shrimp were a good size (5 of them) but watery. Textured as though they had come from a water bath into the sauce. The sauce itself had no flavor. That's a risk with the white sauces but a good place makes it tasty. Really. I could have used some msg.... The highlight of the meal was the fried rice. It was old fashioned and excellent. Just like the days of yore. And the fortune was the best. I might go back and try something less challenging for the kitchen.

I stumbled into this place with friends while waiting for the movies nearby. This actually had a really good Chinese menu. The place is really clean and staff was friendly and I had the best boneless spareribs, peking raviolis and general Gaos chicken. I would love to come back here again.

I've never stayed to eat, but the space is spacious enough with plenty of tables. My only complaint is that they're closed on Mondays, which is almost always when I want them! A few of my favorites: -Moon Pie with chives and egg filing: Super good. Crispy texture on the outside, piping hot filling on the inside. Savory, well seasoned, and very surprisingly tasty even though it looks super simple. I don't always get it, but I'm stoked every time I do. -Beef scallion hand pulled noodles: Any of their hand pulled noodles are delicious, but these are very good. Not super spicy, but has a bit of the hot oil and great umami flavor. -Scrambled egg tomato hand pulled noodles: These are THE ONE. The sweetness of the tomatoes mixed in with the savory threads of egg are chef's kiss. The noodles are the perfect texture and covered in the balanced flavors of egg and tomato. I used to shy away and complained that this dish didn't have enough protein, but the flavor easily makes up for it and you still get the filling, savory tastiness that you're looking for. Definitely a must-get. -Wonton (noodle) soup: Pretty sure their wontons are homemade. Really delicious, flavorful broth. Anytime someone in the house is sick, this is always a go-to. -Fried dumplings: Also delicious. Well fried, has a nice crust on the outside. -Beef stew noodles: Really flavorful broth with tender beef chunks. I believe the noodles that come with it are skinnier, but you can swap them out for the hand pulled noodles. Really great option/choice for hand pulled noodles! If you can't find a parking spot on the street, there's a lot behind the building (near Corrib Pub).

I'm not asian but any means so I can't speak to the authenticity of natural quality of the old friend noodles, but it wasn't for me. Perhaps egg drop soup, scallion pancakes, or other items I'd go for. This place has a lot of good ratings so I might give it a second chance. The noodles tasted more like spaghetti was added in. I left so much food behind as a result. I more so would go for korean or japanese noodle spots from now on.

(A note about spice in Chinese cuisine: Szechuan spice is all about the humble peppercorn with its numbing quality, while Hunan spice is straight up chili pepper. I can't say my digestive system does well with either of them but I love the Hunan variety a bit more. After even one accidental bite of a peppercorn, my lips swell up badly.) Nice to have a solid Hunan restaurant, right by the Chestnut Hill reservoir. It's clean and bright inside, with an enormous menu that offers something for both adventurous and picky eaters alike. We got the: 1. Happy crispy chicken - I was not expecting this to be sweet! This one was very greasy and could've used some blotting. Interesting combo, good to get as a group. 2. Stir fried beef with pickled pepper - My family always orders some version of this dish when we go out to eat. This one was a little saucier than I prefer. 3. Stir fried cabbage - One of their most popular dishes and the one that my table loved the most. They get the cabbage to be so perfectly crispy. I will say, though, that the vegetable dishes are surprisingly expensive for such low-cost ingredients, everything in the veggie section is $20 or above. We also got a tomato egg soup that was a miss, way too much cornstarch that turned the soup into a thick goo. Also, watch out for the automatic tip that gets added. Usually places add auto gratuity to parties of 6 or more but I think MHHK adds it to 5 or more.

Starting with an iPad menu, our ordering experience with our waiter was subpar. We ended up with extra things ordered that weren't part of our initial order. In good news the food was absolutely delicious. Everything was fire and the waiter poured 5 glasses of water for 3 of us. So we could cool down without needing to flag him down. With the only non-Asian waiter in the restaurant, he struggled with basic elements of service. Inattentive. Requests went unmet (lemons for water). We sat for more than 15 mins after asking to box up leftovers and to close our check. This was all a little embarrassing, as we brought my boyfriend's father. After singing praises of the NYC spot, this was a disappointment.
