Excellent! Japanese sauteed udon with beef. Highly recommend in the Mai tais are very strong and that means it's very good.

Great food and service. Enjoyed the lobster special immensely. After 15 years in So Cal we moved back to metro Boston recently and Bernard is still the place to go to!

Upscale Chinese joint, but you can probably guess that from it not being called "Bernie's." Stylistically, neither old school nor authentic Chinese, but more of a modern spin encompassing elements from both. Some sticker shock here--the prices are quite high--but the quality is generally worth it, with some items exhibiting wow factor. Nice atmosphere, professional service, and food created on a much higher plane than your typical takeout joint. Egg Rolls: Interestingly, they're made with beef and not pork. So the flavor isn't as intense, but the construction is still wonderful, with a crunchy, flavorful outer shell and an inner filling with crunchy celery and cabbage, along with the understated beef. Dipped into the duck sauce and mustard, still a pleasure. Pork Spareribs: Now THIS is the reason to come here. If you order only one item (and heck, you might only be able to afford one item), make sure it is this. They're babyback ribs, which isn't as common as the more typical spares from the belly. A less likely cut to be moist, but here they're beyond moist, reaching deep into juicy territory. The crusts are generously lacquered with a red glaze. A triumph of flavor and texture, these are one of the best renditions (if not THE best) of Chinese ribs I've ever had, and they've been repeatably excellent. Boneless Spareribs: Same great glaze, plentiful portion, good thickness, and VERY juicy. A little fatty in some spots, but not to the extent that it was an issue. Tender and delicious. Also among the best I've had. Pork Fried Rice: Cindy Crawford had a mole but she was still beautiful. Bernard's has lackluster pork fried rice, but still a great Chinese restaurant. No need to mince words: the rice here is too light, which might be fine for the more upscale entrées, but accompanying any of the old-school selections (most notably, the lobster sauce), it just doesn't cut it. Shrimp and Lobster Sauce: I love that you have a choice between the white sauce (a New York thing) and the dark sauce (a New England thing). The dark sauce version (really the only way to have it) was very gentle of texture, dark but not overly dark of color, and nicely flavored with black bean sauce and other subtle spices. Some peas thrown in, but not a problem. Not gloppy, not salty, just very tasty and healthier than you typically get. Not my #1 but easily among my top half dozen or so. The shrimp were plentiful and of medium size, cooked to a good snap. General Tso's Chicken: I tried this on a combination plate at lunchtime, and had low expectations, but this was surprisingly great. The chicken was of very high quality, and very juicy under the crisp batter that was lightly applied. The sauce had more oomph flavorwise than most, without being overly gloppy. Some Thai chili peppers gave it unexpected legitimate heat (let's face it, places always say this dish is spicy but it almost never is). Sizzling Chicken with Black Bean Sauce: Minimal sizzle but exceptionally tender chicken, again high quality, cut into large pieces. Good flavor to the black bean sauce, and not too salty. This dish is 99% meat and can go a long way. Udon Noodles with Vegetables: Thick. Lightly sauced. VERY slippery. Mostly broccoli and carrots. Not an exciting dish, but it's a way of getting some vegetables in along with a starch that's better than their too-light-for-me fried rice. Probably wouldn't get it again. Bernard's is the kind of food you can enjoy almost guilt-free, because it's clean and natural and won't leave you feeling gluttonous or regretfully queasy. You can still respect yourself (if perhaps not your spending) the next morning. Still, there's plenty of flavor, and for the right situation, this is the right place, even with fried rice that isn't quite up to the standards of the fantastic ribs, chicken, lobster sauce, and other entrees. For any devotee or all styles of Chinese, this is a must.

Great fortune. We shall see lol.

Went here for lunch. If you're looking for the place you went to as a kid on Christmas, this is it, although an upscale and pricier version. Alas it also is not as tasty. Alone, I sat at the bar so service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the shrimp with lobster sauce (white sauce - the classic) lunch special. With a spring roll and fried rice. The portion was much larger than I could eat. Hot and sour soup was nicely spicy but the mushrooms in it were raw. That's ok as I like them but that's not what I had way back when. And there were minimal cloud ear mushrooms. The shrimp were a good size (5 of them) but watery. Textured as though they had come from a water bath into the sauce. The sauce itself had no flavor. That's a risk with the white sauces but a good place makes it tasty. Really. I could have used some msg.... The highlight of the meal was the fried rice. It was old fashioned and excellent. Just like the days of yore. And the fortune was the best. I might go back and try something less challenging for the kitchen.

I got takeout from this place recently and ordered the steamed wontons in hot pepper and peanut sauce and Mongolian beef. I have always been a fan of the spicy wontons in peanut sauce and they never disappoint! The sauce is so creamy and I usually pour the remaining peanut sauce over white rice to finish it off. The Mongolian beef is also good but I wish they gave more veggies in the dish. The beef portion was very generous though.

We've wanted to try this place for a while and finally had a chance to celebrate a family members birthday here. We visited on a Saturday night at 5pm. This place is dead empty! I'm not sure why, as the food is really good and there is ample parking outside (meters). The place looks modern and clean and the wait staff was friendly and quick in setting up a table for 11. We ordered food and it came out pretty quickly. The white rice came out in the entire rice cooker! The hot tea was something you have to order (vs automatic) and they give it to you in a nice glass kettle sitting above a small candle to keep the warmth. We ordered a bunch of food and most was delicious! What we ordered: Scallion pancake $11.95 - looked good, I didn't get any. Pork soup dumplings $25.90 for 2 orders - Dry, don't get it. My Costco frozen soup dumplings out of the microwave are better and actually has soup inside. General Gaos chicken $18.95 - Good, crisp with good flavor. Sizzling cumin beef dish $26.95 - Good and tender Hot braised beef rice noodle soup $17.95 - Really good noodles in this! Sweet & Sour short ribs $12.95 - A little dry, but the flavor was good Fall off bone lamb chops in stew pot $38.95 - This thing is very large and comes with good pieces of lamb and glass noodles. It was maybe the standout dish for the night. The soup is so good with white rice. White rice $22.80 for a large and 4 smalls Mao's Red Braised pork belly $25.95 - Very good and tender. Fish fillet in golden soup $28.95 - This was the worse dish, bland flavor Pork and bamboo $22.95 - Only had a bite so can't say much Hakutsuru Excellent Junmai $32, Hot Sake $10, Black Tea $3 I got a copy of the bill and finally can see the names and prices of everything, reflected now in this review. Pricing is pretty expensive here, and for our party of 11, they automatically charged a 20% tip (understandable) but they also charged a 3% kitchen fee. There was no option for us to choose the percentage for tip, or to decline/adjust the kitchen fee. Now I understand why this place is empty on a saturday night around dinner time. If not for the high pricing and the mandatory kitchen fees, this place would've been 4.5 or 5 stars. Our bill was $390, wow!

We eventually were able to get in, there is a small space to wait with snacks though. Once our table was almost ready the host allowed us to order and once sat it came almost right away. We ordered the la-xi chicken with less spice, this has small crispy chicken pieces and lot of peppers, had to go in and pick out the little pieces. Truthfully wish it was less pepper and more chicken especially $23.95. The mapo tofu was delicious the perfect numbing sensation that I love. A must try dish was the fish fillet with crispy rice. This was $34 but it is perfect for cold day. They bring this dish out pour the soup on top and let it boil until the crispy gets cooked. We got the green beans as well, pretty standard nothing special. We got a little discount as well, I think for a late night special. The entire meal came with tea and the restaurant had calm setting with wooden interior

Disappointing Service & Poor Seating Arrangement…read more Extremely disappointed with our experience here. I made a reservation for 6 people One Month in advance (in fact, today is my birthday) expecting a comfortable dining setup for my group. However, upon arrival, we were squeezed into a table clearly designed for 4 people. When we pointed this out, the staff insisted it was a '6-person table' and refused to move us to the larger tables available, claiming those were reserved for 7-8 people. This is inconsistent and unprofessional, as we have been seated at those larger tables with a group of 6 before. What's the point of making a reservation so far in advance if the restaurant can't provide adequate seating? The lack of flexibility and the dismissive attitude of the staff ruined our evening. For a place like Mountain House, I expected much better service. Will not be coming back anytime soon."

I ordered the Chinese Crepe with Pork Sausage ($9) and the Takoyaki ($6.50) and it was ready in about 10 minutes. I also snacked on a free Japanese Kit-Kat mini bar while I waited. The savory crepe was made with wheat/grain & eggs and soft and rolled with small sausages (similar to vienna sausages) and topped with corriander. The 6 Takoyaki balls were fried, soft dough mix filled with octopus meat, another good savory snack.
