I got the garlic broccoli. The broccoli was fresh and there were some other vegetables in there as well. I appreciated that. The sauce didn't have a lot of taste, it didn't taste like garlic to me, it kind of tasted pre-packaged. Just the vegetable dish and a small white rice is almost $20. I know things are expensive right now, and maybe the Chinese restaurants around here charge for rice, but I don't know if I would come back. I didn't even save my leftovers. We only get takeout, and service for that is accurate, fast, and efficient. This is the best option for Chinese in the West Roxbury/Roslindale/Chestnut Hill area. Although we're not vegetarian, we especially like the more extensive vegetable options. We can get bok-choy (listed on menu as "Sauteed Shanghai Greens w/ Garlic") without having to go all the way to Little Saigon in Dorchester. Sauteed Spinach /w Garlic also great. For a treat, we get the Peking duck half. Is pricier than other menu items, but it's duck, and so worth it - crispy skin, moist meat, and the traditional accompaniments. Chicken lo-mein has plenty of veggies as well as chicken.They are willing to spice things up if you ask, extra hot or extra garlic. Fried foods are light, not greasy. Very well-made, Chinese food with a flair of Szechuan influence not completely but a well balanced menu that is prepared very well. This is an amazing spot for Chinese in Chestnut hill! We used to come in a lot for dine in, but we haven't been inside since the owners have changed hands in the last 2 years, we haven't had a chance. The actual interior was very cozy and clean with plenty of space for groups and families so we're looking forward to dining in soon! Some of our top favorites have been the Kung Pow Chicken, pork fried rice, and the Chicken Lettuce wraps for entrees. The Crab Rangoon's are wonderful. Perfectly cooked and I love you get a generous amount of them. Some of the other apps we tend to go with are the steamed dumplings, scallion pancakes, and spring rolls. The Spring rolls aren't my favorite, but I am a huge fan of the Scallion Pancakes and the Crab Rangoons here! read more

The place has a lot of seats good for gatherings. The waiters are so not helpful tho. They first give you no time to decide but when you do ask for more time they go and come back in like 20 minutes! Staff at host stand were very nice. The male who was our server wore a winter parka the whole time and was not very friendly. There was one table of 2 young diners next to us who left just after we were seated and I noticed their plates looked untouched but they didn't ask to take it home. No one else was in the restaurant. Our order came out remarkably quickly and the food was hot. But, the scallion pancake was very oily. The chicken wings were huge and unappetizing. There was no meat on them. Looked like turkey wings:) The sesame chicken was covered with bright orange goo and it was all batter with basically no chicken at all. The chicken fingers were golden and good quality. The scallion pancake was good, flaky, but not the best I've ever had. The fried rice was good, very distinct flavor (differs from other Asian restaurants) and not greasy! The pad Thai was just OK- the noodles were flavorful, but there was a lack of peanut sauce, just crushed peanuts on top which caused the dish to lack the flavor it is meant to have. We had to ask the waiter to come over and take our order after sitting down for 20 mins. She seems annoyed we called her over, and more intent on resting her head on a booth. The change in ownership has caused this restaurant, which was never outstanding, to decline. Just when I thought they could not sink any lower, they have. A while back, I ordered the Pad Thai. My fault for expecting good Pad Thai from a Chinese restaurant; it was a clump of noodles with no shredded carrots, no crushed peanuts, no scallions - just a clump of unseasoned noodles with no Pad Thai sauce and some chicken dumped on top. Yes, they have increased the prices and slashed the menu of many of its previous items - and I mean MANY. I picked up their now limited menu not that long ago. I used it to order tonight since I have a family member who has always loved this place. I tried to go "cheaper" by ordering only two items that could be shared. When I picked it up, I was shocked by how much it was. I looked at the receipt which they don't give you - I had to physically take it from the back of the counter where the always unpleasant employee was running my card. The item to be shared had increased by $3.00 since I last picked up the menu. I had asked them to switch out the two pieces of beef teriyaki for chicken teriyaki. They charged me an additional $2.00 for this. The rude employee who is NEVER friendly told me that any substitution is $2.00. Of course this is stated on the updated menu. Imagine putting two skewers of chicken in instead of the two beef ones and charging for that. I told her that I should have been told that when I had called in my order. I get that times are really tough for restaurants and I deeply feel the need to support restaurants and their employees. Their complete disregard towards their customers is inexcusable. I have been going to this restaurant for many years. It used to be an old-school Chinese restaurant run by a very nice family. In the last couple of years, it was sold. We were pleasantly surprised that the menu was revamped and the food is still very good. The reason for my two star review is that the service has really gone downhill. A few of the servers stayed on with the management change, but there is one waiter who is extremely rude and really terrorizes everyone. I really hate leaving a bad review but am left with no choice. We've ordered from Mandarin Gourmet a few times with no issues and found the food generally pretty tasty. Tonight, we ordered 4 dishes and as we started to eat we noticed a huge maggot in her beef and broccoli. Obviously, disgusting. We called the restaurant to complain and ask for a refund or credit for our meal but the manager refused. They said they would give us a credit for the beef and broccoli but not the entire order. We found that unacceptable since we were too grossed out to eat the rest of our meal, and felt that the restaurant should make it right after making such a nauseating mistake. Their second suggestion was that we file a complaint with their 3rd party online ordering service since we ordered through the website. This didn't make sense either since it was the restaurant's fault and their responsibility to rectify. Ultimately, they refused to to refund or credit our meal, didn't apologize and took zero accountability, blaming their distributor. If we had been offered an apology, or even an attempt credit our meal for a future purpose, we might have been able to look past the maggot - unfortunately they've lost a would-be loyal customer. read more

TLDR: 0 STARS. WORST restaurant experience I've ever experienced, given a plate of onions as "chow mein" and manager was incredibly rude and disrespectful. Waiter Ricky was very kind, we are so thankful for at least 1 person being kind to us so we gave him a big tip. I RARELY give poor reviews, unless I think they truly deserve it. O STARS. If I could give this 0 stars, I would. I have NEVER been treated like this before by any of the many restaurants I've visited and/or reviewed. We ordered vegetable chow mein. After waiting 45 minutes (2 tables that came in after us had their foot served 10 minutes before us... but fine, wasn't planning to mention that if the rest of this experience hadn't happened), we received a plate of onions (see picture). We kindly let our waiter know this wasn't what we ordered. The waiter Ricky was so kind and apologetic, but when the manager (short woman, short hair, hot temper) was called over she rudely asserted this was chow mein, we would have to pay for it, and she would let us "get away" with this again. My boyfriend has eaten chow mein a LOT since he was little, in America and India, and has never ever seen it like this. We showed on Google what ALL pictures of chow mein look like. She then argued this was "traditional" style and we should've known that (it is not written anywhere on the menu at all, all it says is "something familiar"... good lord, you think anyone can assume what that means?! Of course it's familiar, it's an American favorite! To think we'd "assume" it "something familiar" meant "traditional" is frankly idiotic and self-centered). The ignorant, ill-mannered behavior of the manager was shocking and disgusting. I have rarely, if ever, sent food back in my entire life. A plate of onions is NOT CHOW MEIN. I have asked my friends who live in various parts of China and Taiwan, they agree that the manager was trying to pass off some sham plate that wasn't chow mein. Even if you look up "traditional chow mein" online, NOTHING looks like this. We had to argue for 7 minutes until she finally agreed not to charge us for the chow mein (we had ordered other items, too, those were fine), but she told us off again and warned us she wouldn't let us do this again next time we came in. NEXT TIME?! HA! Also, the Thai iced tea is extremely watered down, and the pan fried noodles barely had sauce. I was going to actually give a good 4 star review if she had behaved nicely, but her crass attitude towards us was disrespectful and revolting. I have friends who own restaurants I spoke to about this: every single one said even if the manager had been right (she wasn't), you still don't charge for something a customer didn't expect to order (or even order AT ALL), ESPECIALLY when they've ordered other items they are paying for.
