Saw this place years ago when they first opened but never got around to dining in. Got there about 11:45 am just before the noon. Only about two tables were occupied and we were seated right away. ordered the claypot beef brisket with tomato, boiled fish, and eggplant with green beans. The beef brisket was very tender in a sweet ginger sauce with wood ears. The tomatoes replaced the usual daikon in this dish which added to the sweetness. The boiled fish looked like they used Snake fish which was a pleasant surprise and soy beans instead of bean sprouts. Lots of Sichuan pepper corns and chilis as expected. Always one of my favorite dishes and didn't disappoint. The veggie dish consisted of eggplant, string beans and pumpkin. They were deep fried to a crispy but still tender texture. I would then guess quickly stir fried in a very hot wok to get the "wok heh". The garlic sauce was a perfect compliment. Everything was delicious and I would come back. Phenomenal food. Every dish we tried was packed with flavor. The service was also very attentive and kind. I highly recommend the clear noodles, beans, and lamb spine. - The clear noodles have an addicting sauce on top of it (it's a perfect blend of spicy, nutty, and pickled tang). - The string beans are unlike any others I've had before. It's super fragrant and pairs wonderfully with rice -- definitely a must get. - For lamb lovers, the lamb spine is SO GOOD. Their flavors keep you gnawing at the bones, and there's a lot of meat attached to each bone. As for the other two dishes we ordered -- the Sichuan pepper fish was yummy but too greasy for me. It's in the nature of the dish to be drenched in oil, which is not my cup of tea. Though the flavors again, great. I'd been on a mission to try this place ever since I spotted it. One time I called and tried to talk to someone about a reservation but the lady on the phone could not speak english. I was more intrigued as imo the places that don't cater to the westerners usually have some of the best food and not the best service but who TF is coming for service when the food is bomb. It is probably a good thing that the menu is a QR code. The inside is really nice and feels semi fancy but not too to the point of feeling fake. Major complaint is the "seating rules" - they always try to stick two people to the corner where staffs walks in and out all the time, even there are plenty of seatings elsewhere. We are usually there on Friday/weekends at unusual dining times, around 2-4 pm, they keep trying to get us seated at the corner, saying they cannot give us other 4-people tables because they are all reserved. However, each time, until we finish dining, none of those reservations come - those tables were either ever occupied or they just gave them to later coming 2-person parties. read more

"Modern Chinese cuisine" in a clean, midsized space, with ordering through the Toast app at the table. Servers were welcoming and well intentioned, but had minimal English skills, so best for adventurous eaters without the need to have questions answered. Fried Chicken Wings with Basil Leaves: Smaller wings, all flats, but you get a lot of them (about a dozen), all very well covered in a delicious dry rub. Good balance of salt, sugar, chile pepper powder, and fragrant dried herbs, all of which come through with force (kinda like that extra-densely-loaded bottom of the bag chip in a bag of Tostitos Hint of Lime tortilla chips). Good light crunch and very moist to juicy inner meat. Not the most eye-catching to look at, but looks sometimes deceive. This is a signature dish for a reason. Vegetable Bowl: Cold appetizer most simplistically described as Chinese coleslaw. Some crunch, some wilt, some heat, some sweet, some oil. Tip: if you're on a date, make sure both of you eat this, because it's garlicky. Lamb Skewers: I've had these elsewhere and the ones here were much fresher, much more tender, and literally squirting juices in some of the pieces. Crisp exterior had tastable, feelable dry spices and noticeable salt. Excellent. Looking forward to trying pork belly skewers and some of the other stick heat. Clay Pot Chiba Tofu: Nice presentation in a cradle/hammock. Tender, non-rubbery tofu with flavor but not drowned in sauce. Vegetables complemented nicely. Braised Eggplant with Garlic and Chili: Extremely tender, thick-cut steak-like slices of eggplant, supported with even more vegetables, in a thick brown garlicky sauce. Just a bit on the gloppy side, but balanced with hot oil and more complexity than suburban glop. I'm not an eggplant guy but I liked it a lot. Yu-Xiang Shredded Pork in Hot Garlic Sauce: Almost the pork equivalent of the eggplant dish (brown, spicy, a little sweet), minus the glop, and even more tender. Great accompaniment to the white rice. Wormy looking, but again, looks sometimes deceive. Another winner and another dish for date night planning: don't get it unless both of you will be eating this! read more

I came here on a Friday night with my husband. It was very busy and it seemed that the staff was a little overwhelmed. There were 4-5 parties ahead of us and no single person was allocated to the check-in stand - the 2- waitstaff members would occasionally check in with new parties to ask for the party size but didn't take any names. It took us probably 30-40 minutes to be seated. I will say that the entrance area is pretty small so you essentially need to stand right in front of the door which can be a bit unpleasant on cold nights. Once we were seated, the ordering process was quick and efficient. There are QR codes on the table that bring up an online ordering menu where you can place food and drink orders. We decided to order the lamb spine clay pot dish as well as some familiar favorites such as fried rice and fried chicken wings. The food was DELICIOUS. If you're feeling adventurous, I would strongly suggest the lamb spine dish as the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender with a good amount of heat and flavor. Overall, after being seated we had a wonderful dining experience. If the staff can work out their front desk situation I think this would be a top notch authentic Chinese restaurant. read more

Cute little spot near the end (or beginning) of Harvard Ave in Allston just next to tofu house. This little spot was pretty packed when we came in on a Friday evening, but we were able to still sneak in a table for the two of us. You get this free sweet cracker-like sticks to nibble on as you're ordering food. Adds to the whole cutesy ambiance. We got the Taiwanese fried chicken, beef sour hot pot, and their vinegar soaked potato dish. I actually heard about this place because of their fried chicken and while it was good and hit the spot, it was more like karaage than I would've expected. Nothing wrong with that, just slightly underwhelmed. The beef hot pot on the other hand was superb. The broth was wonderfully balanced with their signature sour taste and it was a lot! We ordered two bowls of rice to buffer the hot pot but each bowl was so perfectly dome shaped it was really two portions for each bowl Unfortunately they were REALLY busy and the potato dish came out very late when we were way too full from just the hot pot and the chicken. I went here with my family on Sunday afternoon (12pm). I found out this restaurant from yelp and it has such great reviews, so I was expecting a very good experience in this restaurant. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The service was slow. We ordered 6 dishes in total. It took 30 mins, from the time we ordered, for the first dish to be served; Another 10mins for the next 2 dishes, and another 10mins again for the other 2. I lost my patience after 60mins and my last dish was still not served. We paid our bill right away and asked for the last dish to be wrapped to go. Mind you we didn't order overcomplicated dishes, and even though it's lunch time, but when we came in and put in our order, they weren't busy yet. We ordered Popcorn Chicken, Deep Fried Pork, Seafood Bisque with spinach, Yang Chow Fried Rice, Angus Beef over Rice, and Fried Noodles with Beef ( 2 appetizer, 1 Soup, 3 entrees). I was also disappointed with the servers as none of them come to our table to inform us or assure us that our food is coming or if there's a delay in the kitchen that caused the long wait or whatever. They have 5 servers and none of them come and say anything, not even apologizing for the long wait. I can tell that most of them do not speak english well or at all, but the one that does speak english wouldn't even be bothered to check on us. They do check on other tables that speak Mandarin though. The food itself was pretty decent, hence the 2 stars. The restaurant looks clean and kids friendly. But with the long wait and the poor service, I don't think it's worth it. Perhaps that is the way they serve the food here, slowly one dish at a time. We had a very frustrating experience here. We were in a hurry to catch a train, so my boyfriend dropped me off to order while he went to park. I placed our order immediately, thinking that would save time. We then waited about 30 minutes with no update and no food. When my boyfriend asked the waiter about our order, she casually said they were "working on it." We clearly explained that we were catching a train and were on a tight schedule. After waiting another 10 minutes (40 minutes total), we realized we could not wait any longer since our train was departing soon. At that point, the waiter told us that nothing had even been made yet -- and that we didn't need to wait to pick anything up. Essentially, we were told to just leave. What's most disappointing is not just the delay, but the complete lack of communication, urgency, and responsibility. If they were too busy to prepare the order in time, we should have been informed upfront. Instead, we were left waiting with no transparency, which ultimately caused unnecessary stress before our trip. This experience felt dismissive and unprofessional. Came in half hour before closing and they were nice enough to still seat us. Inside is very modern, clean and spacious. There is a bar code at the corner of the table, you scan for the menu, order and pay right on your phone when you're done. The owner was very friendly and kind. We ordered the beef noodles soup, Taiwanese fried chicken (flavorful and not too greasy like some others), braised pork over rice (very large order and the braised pork was very tender and good amount of sauce), and the lamb skewers. Only 2 people serve, clean, and bus tables, and one of them also seat customers. The taste of the food is bold/strong. we've been here twice now. two weekends back to back. the first time was great. we ordered the pig ear appetizer. to our surprise, it has cucumbers in it which made it very refreshing. we had a couple of beef skewers. a veggie dish. main entree was a beef and veggie dish. all these dishes were completely done well. flavors absolutely balanced with some spiciness. it's kind of like going to a mala place but actually tasting all the other flavors instead of the prominent chili flavor that punches your tongue. the second time we went we ordered the same pig ear app, a couple of skewers, lamb this time. the pork stew with chestnut. a veggie dish consisting of beans, eggplant and pumpkin. i'm not sure what happened to the second time around. it's as if the varsity level chef was off that day and the junior varsity chef was in. everything was overtly salty. the pork stew with chestnut looked nothing like the pictures from the menu and other review pics. even the pig ear appetizer was not the best version. the cucumber had been soaking in its sauce and was not refreshing as the first time around. the veggie dish spent one too many minutes in the deep fryer and too much sauce was drenched on, incredibly salty. i would go back again, hopefully get the A team. parking is street. read more

The restaurant that used to be in this location (Streetfood Revolution) was dearly beloved to me and my friends, but we decided to venture back into memory lane and try Hao Shi Guang. Overall the restaurant has a clean and pleasant ambience and the food was pretty quick to come out. Ordering and payment is done through the phone so it's very streamlined. They have a lot of seating and we had no problem getting a table for dinner on a Sunday. We got the malatang ($16.50) which was pretty forgettable. It had a lot of stuff inside but the soup didn't taste very good to me -- just a bit numbing and sour. The shrimp was a bit overcooked. I liked the fish tofu and the fried tofu. Wouldn't get this again. The fried calamari ($13.95) was quite good. I love how they seasoned it. I would get this again. I still like Wen's Yunnan more for fried calamari, but this one was really good too. The okra and oyster mushroom dish ($18.50) had good flavor and the components were well-cooked, but I wouldn't get it again as it was quite pricey for a vegetable dish. In the midst of all the Asian restaurants of Allston, Hao Shi Guang definitely went above and beyond to try and create a menu that tastes different from the other flavors you'll find elsewhere. With dishes like the eggplant salad with peanut and egg crumble, our tastebuds were taken for a wild ride. Specific dish reviews: Crispy Ham Hock (5/5) - we saw this on the table next to us and thought it was Peking Duck, so we asked to order one too -- needless to say, it was well worth the experience. The pork fat and skin combined with the bao and sweet chili sauce was a real mouthwatering experience. Eggplant Salad w/ Peanut and Egg Crumble (4/5) - both my friend and I's first reaction to this dish was that it did not taste how we expected at all, but at the same time we weren't opposed to it? I think it's definitely not a traditional way I'd expect eggplant to be cooked but definitely is a very flavor-infused dish that I'd recommend trying at least once! Shrimp Ball w/ Honey Crispy Walnut (3.5/5) - Unlike the last one, this dish definitely delivered on expectations -- it was a classic coconut shrimp-type of dish with Grand Mariner sauce, but a bit pricey at that. Yanzhou Fried Rice (3/5) - Again, we didn't expect too much out of the ordinary when ordering the Yanzhou Fried Rice as it was mostly to pair with the other dishes, and that was pretty much what we got. I think next time we would probably opt for just normal bowls of rice rather than spending the extra money on a fried rice though.
