Restaurant with specials on the wall

Very good family run Chinese Restaurant. We were the only non-Asian people in the place. It seemed authentic and reminded me of my trip to China. The flavors are sublime. The dumplings were among the best I have ever tasted. Love the fish

#127 Spicy eggplant/garlic; #92 Beef Brisket With Wild Mushroom And Szechuan Flavor

This is the real deal. Excellent Shanghai and Szechuan dishes. Zero attempt at atmosphere, a bit run-down, which makes it relaxed and kinda homey. Got takeout last night, #92 (they call it "brisket" but has lots of meltingly delicious tendon and cartilage) and #127, eggplant with garlic. Wound up eating it for breakfast, too. Sooo good. Went here first time on Xmas, service was swift and pleasant (got the #92 then as well). What a find.

Braised Pork Shoulder is amazing, and it's so big that my friend and I couldn't finish it. I also really like the Glutinous Rice Balls in Fermented Rice Wine, it is the perfect dessert for people who like something sweet and chewy.

Hot and sour soup at Shanghai Cuisine, Waltham

Hats off to Bobby, my waiter who took fabulous care of me this evening. He turned a good meal into a great one and four stars to five. The restaurant was quiet when I arrived and I was the only customer at the time. Still early but I had skipped lunch so I permitted myself to have dinner at 5:15 PM. The menu isn't overwhelming but after too much driving and too much traffic, I was not in a mood for decision making. Bobby offered to make recommendations and I encouraged him to do so. While I was waiting for my main courses, he brought out a small cup of hot and sour soup on the house. A nice touch. Dinner arrived on two plates about ten minutes later. Bobby's recommendations were Singapore Chow Mei Fun (flavorful with shrimp and meats and crispy peppers mixed with curry) and Shredded Pork with pepper (think strips of pork with medium spicy anaheim peppers). Two huge portions that would have been enough for three normal people so I now have lunch for tomorrow in take out boxes. Fresh tea was hot and delicious. Bobby was friendly and humorous, really turning this into a good meal. Thanks, Bobby! Good luck with parking. On a Tuesday night, some stuff is still closed but the nearby street is shut down for a festival leaving limited spaces. [Review 15078 overall, 580 of 2021, number 1060 in Massachusetts.]

Whole wings needed dissecting to eat.... Messy

Ordered some dumplings and chicken wings A lot of dumplings fresh but not much meat inside. Chicken wing whole and needed to be a orthopedic surgeon to break joints and no flavor or marinade in wings... food fresh , chef came out to use bathroom and his chef coat looked never washed in months and wiped hands on ... grossed me out Tea was watered down to no tea taste , could have been worse...

Got takeout on a weekday night; they're just off the main strip of Moody St in Waltham. Phoned in my order and it was ready in 15 minutes! Pork and Leek dumplings - fried. I would have preferred these pan fried, but these were standard. Shanghai stir fried noodles - nice flavor, not too greasy, not too salty. Chicken and snow peas - generous portion! Beef scallion pancake - loaded with beef, generous portion. The wrap/pancake texture was chewy in a good way, not dry like some places. All in all, solid value for standard Shanghai fare.

    Squirrel fish

I recommend getting the beef tendon and the squirrel fish. Make sure you call ahead for the squirrel fish because they make it as a special order since they use fresh fish. I like how they have two different kinds of chefs depending on the cuisine you ordered. You definitely want to try more on the menu than just the typical general Gao's chicken. You won't be disappointed.

Food was very delicious and tasty most especially Mapo Tofu and Young Chow Fried Rice . Very nice service. Ambiance is calm and relaxing.

    Beef Scallion Pancake
    Rachel S.

Came here for the first time and ordered takeaway through Uber Eats. Ordered the scallion beef pancake, the fried gluten, and steamed stuffed lotus root. Total came out to around $40. What's Hot - Menu. Their menu options are pretty impressive. I rarely come across the type of selections they have on their menu, with other Chinese restaurants. For example, I don't commonly come across stuffed steamed lotus root, scallion beef pancakes, and fried bean gluten at Chinese restaurants. They have steamed fish, fried fish, a good variety of fried rice, noodles, tofu, etc... When I arrived, I heard their staff speak Chinese, which was nice. It's always more helpful for me to speak Chinese to restaurant staff, because I can be more clear. More importantly, it also tells me they have a better understanding of the food and its ingredients. - Quality. The fried gluten had wood ear mushrooms, which I don't commonly come across at other Chinese restaurants. The five-spice beef of the beef scallion pancake was tender and nicely flavored. I could taste the seasoning, which I enjoyed, as well. The green scallion pancake was tender and flakey. Definitely yummy. - Location. Pretty conveniently located in Waltham and easy to find. There's parking conveniently located close by. - Layout. I ordered takeaway, but was able to get a good look of the inside layout of the restaurant. Cliche, but nice and spacious. During this time of the pandemic, it's also helpful that the layout is not crowded. What's Not - Service. They don't seem to pay attention to their online orders. Ordered through Uber Eats and didn't get any notifications, which means they probably also don't provide updates on Uber Eats. I didn't receive any updates. I went to the restaurant around 20 minutes before the designated pickup time to check. When I arrived, I explained that I was picking up an order. One of the staff checked their computer and confirmed my name. I saw him ring up my order and take it to the kitchen. Fortunately, the restaurant had no other customers and I had not ordered many dishes and complicated dishes. I ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes for my food. Keep in mind, 2 of my dishes were cold appetizer dishes, which they probably already had preprepared. They also did not provide the utensils I asked for, when I made the order through Uber Eats. To be fair, they looked like they had just opened for the day, but that also meant they weren't busy when I sent my order. - Health and safety standards. During this time of the pandemic, it's important to maintain health and safety standards. When I arrived, I didn't see any of their staff wearing masks. It wasn't until one of their staff walked up to me, did he put on his mask. The other staff member didn't put on a mask at all, when she spoke to me. I did see several bottles of hand sanitizers by their front door. It looks like they have the right intentions, but that their individual staff may be falling short at times and need to be reminded. - Price. The scallion beef pancake is $13.95, the fried bean gluten is $9.95 and the steamed stuffed lotus root is $12.95. The scallion beef pancake and steamed lotus root are kind of pricey. To be fair, I'm not very familiar with the costs of Chinese produce in the area. However, I was a little surprised that 2 of my dishes cost what they did. Unfortunately, that means I will probably not come here often. Final Answer Am willing to come back here, but may not be a first choice.

    Scallion Oil Noodle Special
    Vickie L.

Happy to see another decent Chinese restaurant open in Waltham :) First time here and have the staff recommended a few signature dishes and they all turned out great! Favorite: 82. Scallion Oil Noodle - a (southern?) Chinese classic. You see the name and you know it all! So simple yet flavorful. Call me weirdo but even the burnt scallion stems taste great to me! 62. Grilled Fish w/ Scallion - my bf just cannot have enough of it! Careful there's bones in the fish! Also good: 87. Braised Beef Tendon Noodle - The tendons are a great add on to boost the savory flavor of the soup. However, they're not quite edible to some people. I prefer eating beef chunk than tendons. That said, if you don't mind wasting those, it's a great noodle soup to try! Meh: 76. Deep Fried Tofu - I'm sure it'd taste much better for dine in but takeout just lost its crispness. Also not a super fan of the American-Chinese-like-sweat-sour sauce to go with it. Average price. Friendly staff. Def will come back again to try more!

    Ho Fun noodles (Beef)
    Nikki N.

My go-to is the Beef Ho Fun. They definitely give you a generous portion. I've gone to many restaurants and get slivers of meat so I'm happy this restaurant is located near me. Also the food is not too salty which I can appreciate.

I went for lunch, so the vibes doesn't hit the same but I can see the evenings being amazing. I met family for an early lunch before I caught my flight back home. One of us has a nut and shellfish allergy and they were able to accommodate as best as they could, which I appreciate for an Asian restaurant. We ordered tea, which I enjoyed. We were started off with a cold cabbage in chili sauce and I was pleasantly surprised. It's got vinegar and chili oil, so you have the mix of tangy, spicy, and add to the crunch- Wow. I went home and tried to look up a recipe because I loved it so much. We also shared the wonton with chili sauce which was delicious as well. The boiled chicken wasn't bad but it is a simple cold dish- so don't expect boiled chicken to be a warm dish. The sweet and sour pork was good. Next time, I'd like to try the steam egg and truffle. I probably wouldn't order the chicken again, but give me the cabbage starter and wonton in chili sauce all day, everyday.

I ordered the beef noodle soup ($15.95) and vegetarian leek pie ($9.95). Both came out within 10 minutes. The beef noodle soup had the thin flat wheat noodle ubiquitous in Taiwanese noodle soups. The soup was well-flavored with stock. Too many of these sorts of places over-rely on soy sauce, making a salty yet thin and underflavored bowl. Not here. I will nitpick and say that I would like larger chunks of beef, not the sort of cubed stew beef you see at the supermarket. The vegetarian leek pie (as it's called in the menu) is a pastry stuffed with chive (not leek), egg, and vermicelli. It was decently salted and hot. The portion sizes were quite satisfying as well. Closing thought - this place has, so far, the closest to what I would consider a decent bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle soup I've had in the Boston metro area so far. I'm always on the lookout for it

Service was strange... hot tea came to table right away and was watered down and minimal tea flavor. I ordered a sesame chicken lunch special which came with soup egg drop soup, spring roll , white rice. I ordered a side of beef teriyaki . Waitress asked 1 or 2 teriyaki ? I assumed how many teriyaki sticks or small or large options? I said 2. Egg drop soup and spring roll shows up with duck sauce... egg drop soup was very good. Spring roll was excellent and filling was fresh. Then Next 2 orders of beef teriyaki with 4 sticks each show up??? She takes away my duck sauce from my spring roll... and leaves me with no duck sauce for my beef teriyaki? I now ask for duck sauce for teriyaki? She brings out a hot spicy sauce instead of duck sauce ? The sesame chicken was very good but more sweet and sour sauce flavor than sesame ? The beef teriyaki was extremely tough meat and I had to ask for a knife to cut up? No glass of water as I saw other tables getting water? I had to ask for water as tea wasn't doing it for me ? Then another duck sauce shows up I didn't ask for but glad it did arrive and was needed? Teriyaki had great flavor but tough like beef jerky and one order would have been enough to tolerate without the confusion of getting 2 orders and then also charged for two ? I found the service confusing and not a smooth outing? Then both the waitresses disappeared while waiting for the check . I asked for a glass of water at this point. No fortune cookie, pineapple or exit offering with the check? All in all I was confused.. but I would eat again here and assume staff trying ... next time I'll be very clear what 1 vs 2 means. The menu does look many good options and convenience with parking, location and nice dining room. I would have rate 4-5 stars but the teriyaki wasn't tender and too tough to enjoy.

The front door was very hard to open went inside. They had a really nice clean seating area . Everything was pre-done so plates and silverware. We're already on tables done ahead of time. Not sure if that's good or bad depends on how long they sit out in the open I would've liked to have ordered something that had all a complete meal together, but I missed the luncheon Specials which made or forced me to order separately. It came out very quickly all packaged in the bag cause I was taking out and I paid and when I paid, I almost passed out with the price. I'll add the slip to the review out of the entire meal. I had the crab Rangoon when I was in my car cause I was hungry. I didn't feel like staying at the restaurant the crab Rangoon were excellent waited till I got home for the entire rest of the meal. Add a whole container of pork fried rice started to have a little bit on that one and I didn't find any pork in it, but I did have some vegetable stuff in it so that was kinda OK but it'd be nice to have pork unless it's at the bottom, I haven't gotten that far The general Gau's chicken was very rubbery and it all stuck together as one clump in my takeout not sure if it would've been any better eating in the restaurant but I've had some very good takeout from other restaurants and this just wasn't it like I said the chicken in it was very rubbery and stringy. It did have broccoli three pieces in the takeout. What I really was looking for was one single container with general gau's chicken Some pork fried rice with a couple of crab Rangoon's. I'm not local, but I do travel there due to my jobs. This is one place. I probably won't make an appearance again due to the takeout quality of the meal. So if you're looking for a really good crab Rangoon, they definitely did a great job on that And maybe it would've been better as a eat in situation rather than a takeout situation

Shanghai Classic Pork Pan-Fried Buns上海生煎饅頭: I was instantly hooked! It's hard to imagine finding such good pan-fried buns in the US. Almost every table ordered them, so they were all freshly made, piping hot. The bun was made with unleavened dough, making it chewy and refreshing, with a light, crispy bottom--not oily or hard. The meat filling was substantial and tender, with plenty of broth (see picture). It was sweeter than salty, incredibly umami. The chili oil was also very fragrant, and dipping it in Zhenjiang vinegar enhanced the flavor and cut through the greasiness. Shredded Pork & Preserved Vegetable Noodle Soup雪菜肉絲麵: The noodles were thin and round, with a soft, mushy texture. While the noodles were clearly machine-made, this isn't a problem in the Yangtze River Delta region; the issue was likely overcooking. The shredded pork were well-stirred, with tender meat, but the noodles lacked flavor. They had to be eaten with the pickled mustard greens雪菜 to be slightly salty, and the umami flavor was severely diluted. The tableware is all disposable, and tipping is not mandatory. It's quite affordable.
