    Beef stew rice cube
    Leslie L.

Came on a Saturday night - busy, nearly full, but didn't have to wait for a table (unlike the ramen place next door). They can seat small and large groups alike, nice. The menu here are classic Hong Kong style eatery staples - baked pork chop on rice or spaghetti, Portuguese chicken baked rice, fried rice, soup noodles. Hainanese chicken rice is boneless btw. The beef stew rice cube, is very tender brisket. Entrees are about $15-20 each, portions are big. Pricey, but I suppose it's the neighborhood and how it's catering to a very specific taste.

Baby cafe is so good! There's a lot of hate on yelp, but it's hard to find Hong Kong style food like this in Boston. The folks who opened this restaurant decided to put a modern twist to his genre of food. The service is pretty good, and they appear to be training more servers, so this should get even better. We opted to get the fried chicken and tofu items along with some rice dishes. The food was very tasty and not too expensive. The ambiance is busy but in a good way!

Yummy food with good sized portions, clean and new space, and fast and nice service - no complaints! The Japanese tofu was one of my faves. Admittedly I didn't try the more unique dishes like the spaghettis. They had high quality take away boxes too.

They just opened back in August when we went for soft opening. A Hong Kong Style cafe with brick toast, lemon tea, we ordered the curry fishballs which we had to send back because they were cold. The ham and egg sandwich was delish and the brisket wonton soup was hearty and filling, great in size and taste. Cute and clean decor with a good variety of items to choose from.

Delectable food and restaurant. The interior of the place is clean and minimalistic, and we got seated immediately. The service was good as well. For the food, everything was delicious and had great portions. The Hai Nan chicken was the best since the chicken was tender and flavorful. We also enjoyed the Thai noodles that were a bit spicy and sweet. We had lots of leftovers that we took to go. My favorite part was the lychee green tea that came with lychee jelly. It was in a tall cup & was very refreshing. I am very satisfied. Definitely check this place out. It is right next to many other restaurants and also Kyo Matcha & Hmart which is always good. A good place to share food and delicious teas.

This new restaurant by Fenway was delicious! It was quick for us to get a table during dinnertime, and service was fast and reliable. We tried their chicken and durian dessert, both of which were filling and decently sized. The hainan chicken was cooked well and tasted almost just how I imagined it to, served with a nice mild sauce and peanuts. The durian dessert was a little too much for two people, but really yummy. It came with one half durian fruit and one half red bean (?) served on what seemed like shaved ice cream. We were so excited to see them serving a durian dish, we had to try, and it did not disappoint. They also had a very large menu selection, and it was hard to narrow down our order which means we'll be back to try more. Overall, I enjoyed coming here and appreciate how filling and yummy this meal was!

    Salt and Pepper Squid ($10.95)

I was really excited to try this place because I love Hainan chicken rice, but the experience in all was just okay. That being said, there's not a whole lot of places I know of where you can get chicken rice near Brookline, so it wasn't a total loss and I may come back in the future if I had a craving. One thing to note is that the menu here is HUGE. Like probably 8 or more pages long. There were so many options and some of them seemed strange for an Asian menu (like seafood pasta or other pasta bake items), but there definitely is variety. Still, after looking through the menu for a good five to ten minutes, there weren't a whole lot of items I really wanted to try. In the end, I ordered the chicken rice and an appetizer of salt and pepper calamari: Hainan Chicken Rice ($17.50) - The price for this dish is absolutely astounding. I'd expect chicken and rice to be maybe $12 or $15 at most, but the price here seems disproportionate to the ingredients. Still, this came out extremely quick (it seems like they have this ready to go at any time) - maybe in less than 5 minutes from ordering. The chicken itself was moist and flavorful, and I really did like the ginger scallion oil that it game with. However, the peanuts seemed unnecessary and the huge mound of rice was fairly dry and lacked the flavor and fat that I tend to enjoy with chicken rice. It was also yellow and tasted a bit like curry which threw me off a little bit. The chicken was the star here though - I'd come back for this chicken because it's hard to get a flavorful and moist chicken with the soy sauce flavor embedded in the silky meat outside of Chinatown or Quincy (or maybe Watertown?). The rice, while not my favorite, was also a huge portion - I ordered an appetizer because I thought the chicken rice wouldn't be enough to fill me, but it came with probably 1.5-2 servings of rice. I was definitely full just on this dish, so if I returned I'd only get the chicken rice next time and skip the appetizer Salt and Pepper Squid ($10.95) - So the weird thing about this is that we ordered this snack at the same time as the chicken rice, but it took maybe 20 minutes or so to make - it actually didn't even come out until we had both finished our chicken and only had a few scoops of rice left on our plate, which was very strange and definitely not something I would have wanted. When it did finally come out, we were pretty full but decided to try a few bites of this anyway since we love this dish at other places. Unfortunately, every single piece of squid was massively overcooked. The batter was nice and a bit on the salty side, but not terrible, but the squid itself was like rubber or leather. I tried to bite a piece in half and took 15 seconds trying to rip it with my teeth only to give up and shove the whole thing in my mouth, which then took extra time to chew through the protein. If they had cooked this for less time, the flavor and batter would have been great, but it was almost inedible with how tough the squid was. All in all, I have to give some grace because this restaurant recently opened up in Brookline, but there were some pretty big areas for improvement. The price of the chicken rice is a lot higher than I'd like, and the fact that the snack/appetizer only came out after we had nearly finished our mains was very weird. We had actually thought that they had forgotten about the order and were getting ready to leave before it came out, and then on top of that it was incredibly hard to eat because it had been overcooked by a degree of several minutes. The last critique is that some tables were given water pitchers, but we finished our waters and waited 10 minutes or so for a refill, eventually having to flag down someone to get our waters filled even while the restaurant had some empty tables. HOWEVER, the chicken itself was very good, and the ginger scallion oil was also tasty. I can see myself coming back just for that or ordering takeout of just the chicken without the rice in a pinch. 3/5 - but there's definitely potential for this to be raised to a 4 after they've been open for some time and get into a rhythm service-wise.

As someone who has lived in Southeast Asia, I miss Hainanese chicken rice! This was pretty good and had a good amount to fill me up, along with the Japanese tofu (my fave!). The place itself was really clean and it is new so I'm glad that I got to try it out. The workers were also nice and attentive as well. I would definitely come back! It is on the more standard pricing these days for meals ~$20 per person

    Baked Portuguese pork chop spaghetti
    Victoria C.

One of the new restaurants along Beacon Street around St. Mary's, located right next to Gyukakyu. This location is much smaller than their Allston location, so groups bigger than 6 would be more difficult to accommodate if they are busy. There are about 10 tables that accommodate between 2-6 people. I came for dinner on a weeknight about a week after they had opened. They are offering free tea drinks with their grand opening. My friend and I ordered baked spaghetti pork chop, fish balls, and hai Nan chicken rice plate. I also got a free lychee green tea which came in a huge glass. The hai Nan chicken rice plate came out first and the best part is the chicken is deboned except for the wing and drumstick. The chicken was flavorful, but the rice was a bit dry and flavorless. We finished our entire chicken rice plate before the baked spaghetti came out. The porkchop was good, but the cheese sauce and spaghetti could have been better. The fish balls were soft, but nothing noteworthy about them. Overall, the service was a bit slow, but I would come here again to try out their other dishes.

    Ma po tofu
    Food E.

Big menu but a lot of the items seem odd and not something I would try, ie lots of the spaghetti dishes. Tried the dry fried beef chow foon, ma po tofu and curry beef. The beef chow foon was very good. Ma po tofu was also good. The beef stew was disappointing - it was not cooked/braised well and was very hard to chew, not how this dish is supposed to be with that cut of meat. Prices are also quite high.

We tried Rubato Cafe and then found ourselves at Bayao, just a stone's throw away, and WOW, what a different vibe. Walk into Bayao and you're hit with bright colors, neon signs, and a decor that feels like a love letter to Hong Kong, whether you grew up there or not. The tables even look like mahjong sets, and they've got posters from classic Hong Kong films. By the time I saw In the Mood for Love (where my fellow Wong Kar-wai fans at?) in the bathroom area, I knew these folks understood ambiance. But let's talk food. I had the chicken tomato macaroni soup, a comforting, flavorful bowl of nostalgia. The chicken was freshly fried and super tasty, exactly why Hong Kong cha chaan teng comfort food is a thing. My friend got the chicken pineapple bun, and while the bun wasn't a perfect replica of the classic (or what we'd prefer, a genuine bo lo bao), I'm now thinking maybe a sturdier bun makes sense to hold it all together. (Maybe I shouldn't have been so upset at Rubato in my last review. HMM.) It tasted good, and I appreciated the cute "Time to Bread" toothpick flag. The Ovaltine French toast was a showstopper. It looks unassuming, then you cut in and BOOM! Chocolate lava oozes out. It's sweet, but hey, dessert is dessert. Prices were reasonable, around $11 for the pineapple bun, $13 for my hearty soup. In the end, Bayao didn't just feed us; it took us on a trip. I'd happily return for both the flavors and those Hong Kong feels.

The staff was incredibly friendly, and I think I only waited 5 minutes from when I ordered to when the food was ready to take away, so that's pretty amazing! I ordered: Lunch special ($11.45) - The price alone here is incredible. You get a good variety of food and a good amount as well for what feels like pre-pandemic prices. I've seen a lot of lunch specials being raised to more than $15 or so recently, so the fact that this one is only $11.45 is a great deal. It also came in a tupperware with a big section and a small section, and I would have expected the rice to go in the big section and the main to go in the smaller one, but they did the opposite - so you get a really large and nice portion of your main course! The actual food I got was: Crab rangoons - These were nicely fried and the filling had noticeable pieces of imitation crab in it. I also liked the savory flavor, as some places make their filling sweeter, but this was more on the savory and salty side. Very nice crab rangoon. Pork fried rice - This was the iffy one. The flavor was on point, but the rice itself was hard and felt undercooked. It wasn't inedible, but it was definitely noticeable, though covering it in the lobster sauce made up for it. If I had ordered the fried rice alone without a sauce, I would have been pretty disappointed. Shrimp with lobster sauce - This came with 4 shrimps which is pretty standard, but it was an above average lobster sauce in my opinion. It was nice and gooey, salty, and savory, and the shrimp was very meaty. This was definitely the star of the lunch, and I had some leftover to eat with white rice for my next meal! All in all, I'd definitely come back - the price along is a great deal, and I'd like to see if the fried rice would be better on a second time around. The appetizer and main were great tasting, and the service was incredibly fast and friendly. 4/5 stars - I'd absolutely have this again!

We ordered four items: rice rolls with curry fish balls, an egg custard lava bun, Ovaltine French toast, and the fried chicken bolo bao. The rice rolls were mild but fine, topped with enough cilantro and scallion to keep it interesting. The lava bun was hot, gooey, and did its job. (GOOD JOB, LAVA BUN!) The Ovaltine French toast? Eh, it aite. But here's the heartbreak: the chicken bolo bao. The chicken wasn't hot; it had that "sat around" feeling. And the bun? Just a dressed-up brioche, missing that true bo lo bao magic.
