My friend mentioned there was a great ice cream place that opened near me, and I couldn't wait to try it! Far out blends fruit into their ice creams which makes them taste out of this world. You can either make your own flavor by choosing a base ice cream and picking out your fruit as well as toppings. I tried the Elvis which is a chocolate banana ice cream with a peanut butter topping and crunchy chocolate pieces and flakes of sea salt. It was so rich and creamy. I loved every bite. The staff was great at keeping up with the line and we got our order in no time at all. One thing I will say is, it's a bit pricey for a small cup. However I understand fresh fruit is expensive and I will pay for a delicious treat like this any day, def worth it. We will definitely be back to try more flavors from Far out. read more

I had never been to this Far Out Ice Cream location. I had been once to the location in Time Out Market a few years ago, but they stopped offering the vegan base, so I was not able to get it since. I recently was nearby this location on a hot summer evening, and decided to stop in to finally try it out again. Summer and ice cream is a good pair. Going inside, you order by yourself on kiosks, not at the counter. There are signs to guide you to the iPads to order, but if it's crowded inside, this isn't the most intuitive thing for a newcomer. The ordering kiosks are practically the furthest location from the entrance. It was crowded when I went, but mostly with people eating their ice cream or waiting for an order so once I found the kiosk, I was able to order pretty quickly. Even with a bunch of people hanging out on a summer night, I was impressed that my order was ready pretty quickly (less than 5 minutes from placing the order). I decided to get the Vegan Kookaberry (vegan vanilla base) with blueberry and mango New Zealand style. It was good and serving was acceptable, but mine started to melt pretty quickly and was dripping over the side of my cup (about 5 minutes after getting it). Also, it is on the pricier side for ice cream, even without adding on things like toppings. For any non-dairy folks, you have to pay extra for the vegan substitution, which I genuinely find annoying. I do like that each order is made on the spot and you can customize flavors from time to time. I actually came here two days in a row! The first day was with my BF and my sister. They both got the pre-made mixes and I decided to go for a dirty soda. The strawberry grahamcake one was the best, but I felt like the mango sticky rice was a little low on flavor and then the dirty soda (the root beer float) was extremely sweet--a little overpowering. Luckily I went back with some friends the next day, so I was able to give this another try. I got the raspberri mudslide in a kiddie size. This was much better. I liked that it was like a raspberry chip soft serve with some chocolate drizzle. I agree with some of the other commenters that the touch screen ordering is a bit overwhelming, because there are so many options and abbreviations on the menu. The first time I had far out was actually at time out market in fenway. It was so good, I had to check out their original location in MA! To my expectations, this store is even better than imagined. Staff is friendly, self service kiosks are easy to use, store is clean and inviting, prepacked pints can be picked up in the back, and froyo is delicious. It was fun to try this place for the novelty of it. Their NZ ice cream is regular ice cream but blended with a lot of fruit, so what you get in the end is a sort of mix of ice cream and fruit with a fro-yo consistency. I went with chocolate ice cream mixed with blueberries and cherries which was tasty, but the cherries definitely overpowered the blueberries. The end result tasted sort of like those retail cherry cordials, but seemed healthier in that there weren't any detectable notes of anything artificial. Not bad. The only option to order is to use their touch screen system, which I always feel is a bit of a pain. No one really explained to us what the offerings were like, so we had to extensively look through the touch screen options to get a sense of the different sizes, flavors and sundaes. When we visited there were not many folks in the shop, so our orders came out quickly. However, the staff didn't seem to be keeping the place very clean and tidy- tables were dirty with ice cream drippings and chairs at empty tables were not pushed in. Everything is quite pricey; two kiddie size cups were almost $12. I was kind of annoyed that they request a tip on the touch screen because we basically ordered on our own and the staff certainly wasn't doing much to attend to the tables or clean up. This place is such a unique and delicious treat! Every time I've visited, my experience has been great. And you know it's good when the smell of freshly baked waffle cones is the first smell that greets you as you walk inside. On my last visit, I tried one of their new specialty flavors which was made of strawberry and had honey drizzled on top. I love how fresh and fruity (without being artificial tasting) their ice cream is. Their cones are also delicious, although I wish they offered more varieties. However every time we've been (which has probably only been during prime time evening time), it's been a ridiculous wait. Last week, we dropped by this place for some dessert. There was a bit of a queue and we waited for about 10 minutes before we could place our order on the electronic kiosk. You can customize your ice cream or you can choose the pre-made flavors(Enzy's favorites). I barely tasted the cookies and creme which was disappointing because you have to pay extra for mix-ins. The blended fruit added some texture to the ice cream so it was a little grainy. I imagine that some of the softer fruits (banana, mango) would have a smoother texture.
