Big fan of Gracie's! I'd been to Earnest Drinks in the Kendall Square area before, which actually serves ice cream from Gracie's, so I knew it must be legit. The benefit of Earnest is that they have much more seating and the vibes are cooler, but Gracie's does the trick too! I actually went to Gracie's right after Somerville Porchfest, so it was pretty busy, but I don't think it's usually that hectic. As other reviews have mentioned, the ice cream here isn't too sweet and is very creamy! They have kiddie scoops for $3.85, small scoops for $4.85, and large scoops for $5.85. Kiddie scoops are limited to one flavor but you can get 2 flavors if you order a small or large. Due to COVID precautions, you place your order online then check in at the window when you arrive so that they can scoop your ice cream for you. We got a kiddie scoop of the ube and a kiddie scoop of the broreo. I thought the broreo would be something like a brownie oreo but it turned out to be a berry oreo (maybe blueberry or blackberry?). Both flavors were really yummy and I appreciated that the ube wasn't a bright neon purple color. I'm definitely looking into getting their pints delivered so that I don't have to venture out to Union Square for their awesome ice cream. Whenever I'm visiting Bow Market, I always drop in to Gracie's Ice Cream. The ice cream itself is more on the soft side, which I prefer. It's creamy and sweet. They have a flavor board of "always" flavors and "sometimes" flavors. The "always" flavors are a few common flavors that people know. The "sometimes" flavors are a bit crazier and change frequently due to the small batch churning. The updated flavors are listed on the Instagram page @graciesflavors almost daily. Honestly, I love that and it bumps up my review rating automatically. I love the crazy "sometimes" flavors that are offered at the shop. Their website holds their full flavor list, and they are still thinking of new creations! One of my favorites "sometimes" flavors is Pandan. It's a crowd favorite and comes back often. Recently they started to make Ube and it always sells out quickly. I was actually able to catch it one time and got a pint to go. Another perk? They have a loyalty card that after the tenth visit, you get a free cone or A PINT. I saved that card for that ube! And of course being in the heart of Somerville, they offer fluff cones. I really like this ice cream! I got the pop tart flavor and the black raspberry chip. Both were good quality and the pop tart was fun and unique. The ice cream wasn't quite 5-star for my ice cream taste (I tend to reserve 5 stars for ice cream I finish and wish I still had more of hahaha) but the fluff cone ALMOST edged Gracie's to a 5. One of my favorites! We stopped here for some ice cream after a meal in the area. They have some unique flavors! A green ice-cream caught my eye and I wondered if it was pistachio. Turned out to be something called pandan. I love trying out new flavors, especially where ice-creams are concerned and this fit the bill. Usually I avoid tasting samples since it involves those tiny plastic spoons - one use and into the trash bin they go. But I was pleasantly surprised by their use of wooden spoons (yay!). The pandan was delicious. We got a scoop and one of the best parts was getting torched marshmallow on your cone. Oh yes, it was off the charts. I don't know how to best describe the pandan flavor, floral tasting maybe. Anyway, the texture of the ice-cream was great, not icy or too cold at all. Service was quick, attentive and pleasant. Don't know what is up with the negative reviews that are about inclusive signage or something you didn't eat. I've been coming to Gracie's for several years when I want something I know will be great for home, and in the last year they have surpassed Toscanini's for me by a mile. While the gelato heavy-weight has gotten sweeter over the years I think Gracie's has perfected less sweet ice cream. They remind me of Somerville as I remember it before the green line expansion was announced, the new apartments went up, and rents doubled in a year. Highly recommend! I can't believe this place only has 3 stars! Ever since my husband and I stumbled upon Gracie's it's been our favorite ice cream shop. We'll choose Gracie's over JP Lick's or Tuscanini's any day. Came here as I waited for my bus. I wanted to try the Salted Whiskey. The first bite tasted a little like whiskey but the rest of the ice cream just tasted like vanilla. I wish it was slightly creamier, less water content. It was a hot day but also my ice cream was melting incredibly fast, it ended up being super messy, no matter how fast I ate. You can find Gracie's Ice Cream at 22 Union Sq, Somerville, MA 02143 in Union Square alongside India Palace. This is a small, independently owned ice cream shop easily accessed by foot traffic - I'm not sure about the parking situation but would assume parking can be found in side streets or small backlots. While visiting Boston for a business meeting my and associate Sid and I discovered Union Square (upon the recommendation by someone at Tavern at the End of the World) and came upon India Palace, where we had a more than satisfying dinner. While standing outside waiting for the Holiday Inn shuttle I mentioned that ice cream would be the perfect end to our exploration - thus we found Gracie's quite by accident since it's located right next-door! Walking into a small ice cream shop is interesting as you never know what you will find. The outside of Gracie's in adorned by a folding sign with a couple of hand-drawn images that were quite fun and cute, with a Halloween motif (we were in Boston the week before Halloween). The interior continued with the Halloween decoration using the fibrous webbing that seems to be popular among locals. The artwork continued inside with hand-drawn boards behind the counter. After asking a few questions we each ordered a scoop on a sugar cone - I tired an interesting orange-vanilla that tasted like a Push-Up (which was described quite accurately to me by the person behind the counter (Gracie?). We ate our ice cream while waiting on our shuttle, which of course never showed up. When we called them back they replied "I waited and no one was there" - hmm. In any case, while waiting we had quite a discussion with, I'm presuming the owner that was interesting, mostly about the Union Square area and it's recent gentrification. She was quite friendly and informative and provided fantastic service. She indicated that a local artist did the boards upon inquiry. I was not a regular ice cream consumer until COVID-19 forced me to stay home, and needless to say, I have been eating my feelings. I've been ordering pints from Gracie's lately, although I frequented this ice cream shop a few times in the last few years. To be honest, I did not rave about this place before (probably why I never got around to writing a review) but honestly, I am impressed not only by the product, but because the business is SHOWING UP during this difficult time. Whether it's the Friday check-in on Instagram, fundraisers to help food-insecure households in Somerville, speaking out for BLM/trans rights, sharing useful resources to self-educate or support local schools, even down to the "ANTI-RACIST, ANTI FASCIST, TRANS LIVES MATTER" slogan on my pick-up order bags, Gracie's understands that we're all in this together. And that just makes it easier (not that it's hard, the ice cream is so satisfying) to support this local business, which has become more important than ever. Anyway, buy ice cream. Ube is my favorite, with mango, black sesame honey, and pandan tied for a close second. You have to order (3 pints max per order) in advance on their website and choose a 5-minute pick-up time. Every week, there is at least one weekday evening and a weekend morning time for pick up, ranging a few hours at a time. I find the ice cream at Gracie's to be much creamier and less sugary than what I find at the grocery store (my guilty pleasure was Haagen Dazs but I'm not sure if I can ever go back). Some of the flavors are a little...unusual (this is probably why I didn't love Gracie's before - why did I order Salty Whiskey "just to try something I can't get at Market Basket" when I don't even like whiskey?) but I love that there's something for everyone. Oh and no food coloring, so don't expect Mint Chip to be that radioactive green that you'd see in Pandan. Try Gracie's - if not to support a local business that cares about more than itself, then for the Ube ice cream. read more

Really disappointed in my experience here. You have to order online, which is fine - but there was a hidden "tip" of 15% added to the order that I didn't realize until after I had ordered. Normally I would be okay with that, but it took like 15 minutes to get my order even though there was no one else there. I looked inside and saw the two employees chit chatting. On top of that, the ice cream came out about 30% melted. In terms of the actual ice cream, the texture was really good. Unfortunately the flavors were REALLY muted. Came here on the first warm Saturday night in spring in Boston, and there was predictably a line out the door. Gracie's doesn't have a ton of flavors, but it has old favorites and some really neat innovative new ones too -- pop tart and swiss cake roll were both really tasty, and the kiddie is more like a small at other ice cream shops. Their ice cream is a little on the melty side, but I think that's more a function of how busy they are -- their case is almost never closed! Definitely spring for the fluff cone since that is super fun...although they really shove the fluff all the way into the bottom of the cone -- nice because that means the ice cream doesn't leak out the bottom, but a little sad because that means you get sugary marshmallow at the bottom instead of ice cream! read more

I ended up going with the Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, which was a sinfully delicious chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips, brownie pieces and cookie dough. The ice cream itself was so creamy and dense that I was in heaven. My BF went with the traditional coffee flavor and said it's the best coffee ice cream he's ever had. We both ordered smalls, which is actually two scoops, for $4/piece. The service: The woman working wasn't overly friendly by any means, but it was cool to watch her make the ice cream after serving us. A Somerville gem! Why didn't I discover this place sooner? We strolled by Union Square after got slightly disappointed with the hyped Bow Market, and decided that ice cream is probably what we needed. Gracie's store is small, unpretentious, and filled with happy friendly staff. I opted for the Mango, which the server recommended to enjoy with chili-lime salt. It was perfect!
