Walked into this place after seeing it on my stroll through Union Square. They have a smaller selection of unique flavours- this is not Baskin Robins after all. Salted whisky seemed interesting but I opted for Pop Tart. I'm not sure what a Pop Tart tastes like because I was more of an Eggo Waffle kid myself, but this flavour reminded me of the store brand processed strawberry ice cream my mom used to buy before we developed more advanced palates. But Pop Tart ice cream aside, as I'm sure there are other flavours worth trying, I was put off by the cold attitude of the staff. I asked, after ordering my ice cream, if they sold tea or coffee as I couldn't find this on the menu. The staff member replied, "we do but it's pour over so it takes a lot of time to make." Wow. It takes a lot of time to make or is it that it takes a lot of effort that you just don't want to put in right now? She seemed like she was trying to convince me not to order coffee. Which I didn't. We could not taste any Thai tea flavor at all and we could only taste heavy cream flavor; also the color doesn't look anything close to Thai tea unless we have mistaken it with something else. The black raspberry chip was good, we could clearly taste the black raspberry and we like the chocolate chips' size and crispiness if them. Oh man, I felt like a kid again in this ice cream shop. First off, it's super welcoming from the outside- I like the abolish ICE sticker. Good to know they have these charitable projects going too. I tasted the salted whiskey and grape nuts. The grape nuts had a nice texture in the sweet cream ice cream. Ended up getting the smallest size with strawberry (always a winner) and grape nuts ice cream in a sugar cone dipped in chocolate and little round rainbow sprinkles. So good! Went here for the "salty whiskey" flavored ice cream, tried it, but alas was left dissatisfied and quite frankly disappointed. Five years before I even existed, my parents were in a Suburb of Rome. They spoke of this amazing stuff called "Gelato Whiskey", which I didn't find when I myself went to Italy. I took to the internet, and the Zagat guide's "Boston's 8 Hottest Ice Cream Shops". Then I went to Yelp, which had a rather ominous 3-star rating. Still, I took a risk and ventured out here on the 86 bus. Turns out, Yelp was right... The ice cream may be homemade, but that doesn't automatically make it spectacular. The texture was pretty average, I didn't find it to have that silly, creamy feel some ice creams have. In terms of the flavor, I found it lacking in what sent me here: the whiskey. In flavor, it was more like vanilla ice cream with a little bit of salt. When eating ice cream I usually scarf it down, not this time... I slowed down to try and taste the whiskey, to no avail. Ok look. I'm not ice cream connoisseur but the flavors at Gracies are on point. Pandam is literally the best thing that exists. Ube flavor (some sort of weird yam nutty thing and the ice cream is purple) jesus just wow. I like the activist message and I like support for the local community. There is something about the social media presence that rubs me the wrong way but I can't say for sure what it is. They have definitely streamlined their ordering process with the addition of their ordering window. This was my first time here and ordered the mint chip and salty Oreo. I really enjoyed the salty oreo flavor which was creamy and tasted like salty Oreo without Oreo toppings in the ice cream. The mint chip ice cream was very airy which made the texture seem as though it was sort of freezer burned. Also the chips were all layered on the bottom of the pint, as opposed to being distributed throughout the pint, which I'm not sure if that was intended or not. My boyfriend is convinced that the ice cream melted and refroze with the chips on the bottom. Nonetheless, I definitely would like to go back to try the other flavors read more

This is a great great place for ice cream, but as a result of COVID it has lost all human touch. You have to order on your phone still, and what would take 3 minutes if there was no line, now takes much longer. I'd be fine with ordering at the window, but no longer can you see any of the flavors and the fun of getting an ice cream with your kids is gone. if you're going to go all digital, at least have a screen that shows the flavors with a photo. An ice cream gem in Somerville! It was below freezing the day we visited, and their ice cream was still amazing! We ordered black raspberry oreo, raspberry pop tart, golden milk (cinnamon and turmeric) and chocolate marshmallow... and of course we had to try out their toasted marshmallow cone which should be offered at every ice cream shop! If you're looking for classic ice cream flavors this might not be the spot for you as they have a smaller menu of specialty flavors... but if you're willing to try something new, they are delicious. And most of their flavors are an ode to the classics so there is something for everyone. They give you so much ice cream for your dollar so no need to size up. And they have a great COVID protocol where you order online and pick up at their window. We will definitely be visiting again! My absolute favorite neighborhood ice cream spot. They have a few mainstay flavors that are all amazing (that black raspberry chip tho) and they also have a rotating flavor selection that can go from regular to experimental & adventurous. Never had a bad scoop. Plus the folks who run/work at this place are super chill, and they really care about their community. During Fluff Fest they're out slinging fluffernutter cones like champs, and they help raise money for local schools and such. read more

Gracie's is a super cool ice cream place that I loved being able to support! I got pandan and Swiss roll in a fluff cone, and my sister got ube and mocha cardamom in a waffle cone. I liked mine, though the pandan flavor could have been stronger, but there were a few ice crystals in my scoops. additionally, the texture of the mocha cardamom was not good. It wasn't very creamy and seemed to be breaking apart into chunks. The flavor of the ube could have been stronger as well. Additionally, it seemed like they only had one person working on a sunny Saturday afternoon, so the wait time was pretty long. I also waited as four people who placed their order after me got their ice cream before I did. Overall, a great concept but execution could have been better. read more

Pros: The ice cream is good. They support the local community and school. They have quirky art and flavors. Punch card system is generous. Peter (staff) is incredibly helpful and friendly. Cons: The staff quality is massively variable. Aforementioned Peter is great, Emily is good but the vast majority of them (especially the younger ones) have not been trained appropriately. Really basic service industry stuff like having manners, eye contact and acting like you don't hate your job and customers. The sighs and eye-rolls when someone asks for something not to your liking... The scoop sizes varying depending on who/when and their mood. Chatting to their friends while serving you... Without a doubt, this is some of the very best ice cream I've eaten in recent memory. Thoughtful and creative, the flavors at Gracie's delighted my palate. I've tried the chocolate fluff, the peach, and the blackberry chip. Each was excellent--the peach and blackberry chip both brighter and fresher than I expected. The proverbial cherry on top is the fluff brûlée cone--I can't even believe the ingenuity! It seems like something that should always be happening. All of the ice cream is made onsite in a beautiful shiny lovemachine. The prices are great, and I just know this is going to be the perfect addition to my favorite square. Fun ice cream in a cute, clean atmosphere (and very nice staff). I love innovative flavors, and they're hard to find in Boston (and surrounding towns). Gracie's gets creative and i am so glad for that! I tasted the pumpkin squash ice cream and LOVED it, bit wanted something with "chunks" so i got the Gold & White dress. Filled with honeycomb, corn pops and golden grahams (C), it has a theme going on and that's childrens cereals. Or maybe it's gold & white dress of internet fame. Either way, the cereal gets a soggy, milk laden texture that is very nostalgic. I like. I paid extra for a marshmallow fluff cone, but all i got was a little dallop on the edge that they torched. It had a good flavor, bitter caramel, but i was hoping for a lot more fluff on the cone. Also, why do you guys keep closing? Stay open! I'm ready for more treats. read more

As soon as I entered the store, I was looking forward to reading the flavor options. My eyes alighted on a forlorn little piece of paper pasted in the corner of the freezer and I eagerly read... grapenut? Who puts grapenut FIRST on the menu?!? Anyway, even if Gracie's flavor list isn't very skillful, their ice cream definitely is. The salty peanut and chocolate fluff both had a rich, dense, super premium texture with just the right amount of mix-ins. I'm not sure if they make their own marshmallow swirl or just use Fluff, but it was chewy instead of gloppy, with a nice fragrant taste to it. The flavors are creative while still being comforting; my combination tasted like rocky road! :) The guy behind the counter told me that they make each chocolate flavor slightly differently--not sure exactly what they mean by that, but hey, it sounds cool. Although the portions are somewhat small, the prices are reasonable ($3.25 for a kiddie, $4 for a small, $5 for a large, I think), especially for such great quality. The interior is a little stark, but hopefully it will brighten up as Gracie's settles into the neighborhood. Such a welcome addition to Union Square! read more

Gracie's is the place to go for artisan ice cream. The flavors are very unique--from Salty Whiskey to Guinness, from Irish Cream to Chocolate Fluff. I sampled several flavors, and each was tasty and flavorful. They were true to their names. The ice cream was a perfect consistency; perfectly creamy but not too much. Gracie's dishes up some excellent quality ice cream. A definite must have: Salty Whiskey. This flavor is indescribable; it's something you have to try for yourself. If you're not into trying different flavors--if you're not open to trying an entire new world of tastes--then you may not be a fan of Gracie's flavors. I implore you, however, to try something different. The staff really tries hard to make each flavor the best it can be. The server during my visit described each flavor I asked about and told me she was happy how each flavor turned out. This shows you each server is personally making the ice cream and perfecting it. How can you not want to try something made with such time and care? The shop opened in November 2014, so the flavor list is likely expanding. It's a small shop tucked in a block of businesses that serves up never-been-done-before or unique types of flavors. I love how the owners/staff are up on social media by creating and frequently updating the shop's accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Definitely be sure to check out these pages--you'll see tantalizing pictures of ice cream that will get you to go the shop, and fast!! There are nice tables inside. They will give you ice cream in a pint, ice cream in a cup, ice cream in a cone. They will put fluff on a cone, brûlée it, put ice cream on top of it. Union Square is like a tiny hipster paradise. It has everything you need, craft doughnuts, craft coffee, 10xcraft bars and that chill vibe that makes you almost forget how much you're paying for fried dough, boiled beans and rotten cereal, respectively. Add to that list ice milk, because goddamn is Gracie's a welcome addition to the hipster pentagram of Union Square. It's small, simple, with flavors like salted bourbon and mint chocolate swiss roll blast or whatever. Because this is a hipster ice cream shop, you don't come here for Turkey Hill vanilla, you come here for organic Moroccan mint black pepper coffee bacon crunch. The service varies, sometimes they're super friendly, sometimes they've got better things to do than listen to you mangle the artisinal names of their flavors. But, generally they're a lot nicer than Toscanini's, which is the high school prom queen of ice cream shops. The prices are pretty normal, something like $7 a pint, which is more or less the same as the other high-class places. I definitely recommend the salted bourbon (something like that). They routinely run out of it, which is either brilliant marketing strategy or further evidence that hipsters are bad at commerce. read more

I eat way too much cookies and ice cream for my own good. That being said, I'm always interested to go to ice cream stores with "creative" flavors. Although it hasn't been rated the best on Yelp, I still went out of my way to visit Gracie's. There are so many mixed reviews of Gracie's, but I still came anyways. The flavors are unique (but limited)! I've never seen half of the flavors they have. I got the two most popular flavors: fluffy chocolate (basically light chocolate with marshmallows inside) and 2 cookies (basically as the name implies... two types of cookies are in this ice cream flavor). Again, the flavors are unique, but they weren't great to the point where I would come back for Gracie's ice cream. I had my ice cream in a fluffy cone. Cool concept, but nothing very special about it. Store is quite small. While I'm generally #teamtosci when it comes to icecream, Gracie's has one trick up their sleeve that cannot be beat: Toasted. Fluff. Cone. I got a scoop of the two cookies icecream (which was great!) and watched with awe as the guy working lovingly coated the top of my cone with fluff, then busted out a tiny blow torch to toast it to perfection.
