Since we were in Cambridge today and my sister-in-law wanted to try a cannoli, we opted to go to Mike's Pastry (this is an offshoot of the original in North End Boston). Very friendly staff, easy to read menu largely on one wall, not crowded and easy to order. Clean and bright inside with about 4 counter seats by the window. We ordered one each of espresso, lemon, and pistachio cannolis, walked around the corner and sat in a cool alley with a bench to enjoy them. The cream is very rich, sweet (2/3 would be enough! Visiting Mike's Pastry in Harvard Square is the perfect way to get their pastries (that taste as good as the original) without the insane lines. The staff here are always so friendly and efficient. While their cannolis are rather expensive ($7-$10 for 1) it does make your day 200% better when you get one of their sweet treats. We stopped in at Mike's on a Sunday morning when all the coffee shops in the vicinity were positively bursting at the seams with lines. Here's a secret: Mike's is open early too, and if you're in for a classic espresso drink you can get one there along with a little (ok, large) sweet treat to start your day. There's not much by way of seating at this location so it's more for pickup, but there is a bar at the front of the store where you can sit for a few minutes to enjoy a treat. My husband and I got a latte and a cappuccino, and a pistachio cannoli to split. Both drinks were perfect, hot but not scalded, with robust espresso flavor. The cannoli, as expected, was fantastic. Yes, it's big. Yes, the toppings are only on the ends (but you can eat it strategically to make the toppings last through most of the experience). Maybe I have too much of a sweet tooth but unlike a lot of reviewers I did not find it to be TOO sweet, just the right amount paired with a bitter coffee beverage and split between two people. Incredible cannoli place! They have a wide variety of filling options to choose from, as well as pastry shells in vanilla and chocolate covered. I ordered the Nutella cannoli and it was delicious! First of all, they make giant cannolis that are very filling so you only need to order one. The pastry shell is baked crispy but doesn't messily crumble when you take a bite, plus has a ton of flavor. Then the filling is delicious, stealing the show with a creamy and sugary taste that fills your sweet tooth. I didn't think the Nutella cream tasted overly like Nutella, more like chocolate cream cheese with a hint of hazelnut, but was still delicious. They even add powder sugar sprinkled on top. However, it is smaller with only a few bar seats and no public bathroom. I love the ricotta pie and cannolis here! The ricotta pie is cheap (about $6 a slice) and it's relatively healthy and not too sweet. The pistachio and original cannolis are my favorites. The cannolis here are super sweet so be prepared for that. The service is fast and friendly. Parking can be tough, but I can usually find meter parking nearby. Mike's is one of the representative chain pastries in the Boston area. However, its overwhelming sweetness was totally a disaster to my Chinese/ Cantonese appetite. Pistachio Cannoli: One of the signature products. To be frank, this cannoli was well baked, with incredibly crunchy dough shell which easily fell apart under a bite, and brimming thick ricotta cheese with a slight hint of lemon or orange zest's citrusy tanginess and fragrance. However, the cheese was ridiculously cloyingly sickly SWEET I had never tasted before, so that I could only persist to half of one. Maybe it suits American taste buds more. Tiramisu: I saw recommendations on the China's food reviewing platform Dazhong Dianping大众点评, but this piece of cake had actually nothing to do with the authentic Italian Tiramisu. As was shown in cannoli, EVERYTHING inside was sweetened, while I couldn't taste any hint of cocoa's bitterness or Rum's fragrance. As a dessert lover, I fell into deep depression and confusion. As my first time to Boston, stopping at Mike's pastry was a have to. The line went pretty quickly, and the employees were very fast and efficient at getting everyone their order. They had a large selection with many different flavor, choices and combinations. I have to say my expectations were quite high, but I wasn't as impressed as I was expecting to be. For me, it was too much filling and too sweet. But my friends absolutely loved theirs so maybe a different flavor for me would be the trick. Overall, I would still go back again and it's absolutely worth a stop! Parking would have definitely been difficult however I walked from my hotel so it wasn't too difficult for me. I'd never been to this location before. I've only been to the one in the North End previously. Service was fast and lovely. There was only one other customer in the entire store. We got lobster tail, fudge brownie, a tiramisu slice, and strawberry cheesecake. The lobster tail were not as crisp as I might have hoped but the tiramisu and the strawberry cheesecake were absolutely on point. Parking was also ridiculously easy. Always a great cannoli. I hadn't been to the Harvard sq location and I am very pleased with it. It has a more contemporary feel than the north end location, and slightly more upscale than their north station hub location. The quality of the cannoli are fantastic and the pistachio is amazing. We split one between the two of us and really enjoyed it, they're large and filling. Service was great. There were two workers in the shop and we were the only ones in there. We were told that Mikes is a Boston institution, but as we were walking around the city it seemed we were the only people without a Mikes pastry box so we had to go. The selection of pastries especially the cannoli is overwhelming, and was very difficult to make a decision so we bought more than we needed to. First the cannolis, we got 4 different flavors all very good but the one that really stood out was the Nutella one. OMG! It was so good. We also had the pistachio, the Oreo and a pecan caramel, and all were very good. It was busy but they really moved along pretty quickly, and we saw lines at other locations that were down the street. Obviously they are doing something right. We also got a red velvet moon pie for the kids that was huge and also amazing. Admittedly I'm not much of a canoli person but Mikes was a big disappointment after reading about it before arriving in Boston. We got the Hazelnut and a Blueberry Marscapone as well as a Lobster Tail. The Blueberry was a new item and the filling was ok. Unfortunately I didn't notice until opening the box that they neglected to put any hazelnuts at all on the other one, which is like what's the point, right ? The shells of both were too hard for my liking. Modern Pastry's was better, seemed fresher and lightly crispy. The filling on the "hazelnut" had a strange aftertaste too like city water, couldn't finish it. Worst of all was the lobster tail. It was huge and filled with tons of filling but the shell was tasteless and stale and hard and the filling was bland. To top it off they charge more than other places. As a tourist mikes pastry's was on my list of things to do before I returned to my hometown. The one downtown always had a line and we were going to visit Harvard anyways so when I saw mikes pastry's with no line I know I needed to jump in. We got one amorino cannoli and one mint chocolate chip. I will say- this is from a point of view of someone who doesn't love canollis. We sort of stumbled upon cannoli's on our recent trip to Boston. I mean they were on hubs list of things to do while visiting but we literally stumbled onto Modern Pastry's when we came across a huge line while walking the Freedom Trail and then were delighted by the cannoli, a shell filled with utter utter amazeball goodness! Then we heard about Mike's from people we were standing in line with during a Christmas Cruise. I saw them carrying a Mike's bakery box and asked if theirs were better and sure enough the holder of the box said Mike's was the best. Apparently, there is some back and forth between who makes the best cannoli!! lol Well, I was happily intrigued, cuz, that cannoli at Modern was one of the best things I've eaten in a long time. The ricotta filling of the cannoli tastes plasticky at the ends, like it's been stored in plastic wrap. It tastes perfect once you get past the surface parts, but that does mean you can't get a non-plasticky bite with chocolate chips. Still, I have to get Mike's chocolate covered cannoli when I'm in the area for nostalgia reasons, and the chocolate ratio. The "rainbow layer" is much more cake-like than the usual rainbow cookie, so maybe that's why they call it a "rainbow layer" instead. I love the variety they have - when I was having a sweet hankering after a Saloniki dinner in Harvard, with Mike's across the street, I figured where else would I go?
