Mike's Pastry is the place that is on every single must visit in Boston list. So, when we walked by one near Harvard Square, we had to stop by. This one didn't have a long line that I knew their North End location would certainly be marked by. On our first visit, we tried a plain cannoli to have a baseline of what to expect. We also tried a pistachio macaron. On the second visit, we tried a red velvet whoopie pie and a pistachio cannoli. The cannoli's are fire. The shell is thick, crispy and they hold up. They're stuffed with sweet creamy ricotta. It's a perfect pairing of soft cream and a hard shell. This location had a few bar seats available at the window and against the wall. There's a huge window of sweet treats on display. I definitely recommend visiting, try a cannoli and get something to go. They have everything from lobster tails to Boston cream pie. Mike's has been a fixture in Boston since Mike Mercagliano opened his first shop in the North End at the end of World War 2. Anyone who has spent time at the Widener Library knows that you have to wrap up before 10 p.m. to get a late night fix of sugar at Mike's (how many bakeries stay open that late, I ask you?) Mike's has an outstanding selection of pastries and gelato but the star here is the carrot cake. Very friendly staff, easy to read menu largely on one wall, not crowded and easy to order. Clean and bright inside with about 4 counter seats by the window. We ordered one each of espresso, lemon, and pistachio cannolis, walked around the corner and sat in a cool alley with a bench to enjoy them. The cream is very rich, sweet (2/3 would be enough! Visiting Mike's Pastry in Harvard Square is the perfect way to get their pastries (that taste as good as the original) without the insane lines. The staff here are always so friendly and efficient. While their cannolis are rather expensive ($7-$10 for 1) it does make your day 200% better when you get one of their sweet treats. We stopped in at Mike's on a Sunday morning when all the coffee shops in the vicinity were positively bursting at the seams with lines. Here's a secret: Mike's is open early too, and if you're in for a classic espresso drink you can get one there along with a little (ok, large) sweet treat to start your day. There's not much by way of seating at this location so it's more for pickup, but there is a bar at the front of the store where you can sit for a few minutes to enjoy a treat. My husband and I got a latte and a cappuccino, and a pistachio cannoli to split. Both drinks were perfect, hot but not scalded, with robust espresso flavor. The cannoli, as expected, was fantastic. Yes, it's big. Yes, the toppings are only on the ends (but you can eat it strategically to make the toppings last through most of the experience). Maybe I have too much of a sweet tooth but unlike a lot of reviewers I did not find it to be TOO sweet, just the right amount paired with a bitter coffee beverage and split between two people. Mike's is one of the representative chain pastries in the Boston area. However, its overwhelming sweetness was totally a disaster to my Chinese/ Cantonese appetite. Pistachio Cannoli: One of the signature products. To be frank, this cannoli was well baked, with incredibly crunchy dough shell which easily fell apart under a bite, and brimming thick ricotta cheese with a slight hint of lemon or orange zest's citrusy tanginess and fragrance. However, the cheese was ridiculously cloyingly sickly SWEET I had never tasted before, so that I could only persist to half of one. Maybe it suits American taste buds more. Tiramisu: I saw recommendations on the China's food reviewing platform Dazhong Dianping大众点评, but this piece of cake had actually nothing to do with the authentic Italian Tiramisu. As was shown in cannoli, EVERYTHING inside was sweetened, while I couldn't taste any hint of cocoa's bitterness or Rum's fragrance. As a dessert lover, I fell into deep depression and confusion. I've been coming to this Mike's Pastry about twice a month. It's rare that they have a long line and the pastries are just as good as the original location! However, it is smaller with only a few bar seats and no public bathroom. I love the ricotta pie and cannolis here! The ricotta pie is cheap (about $6 a slice) and it's relatively healthy and not too sweet. The pistachio and original cannolis are my favorites. The cannolis here are super sweet so be prepared for that. The service is fast and friendly. Parking can be tough, but I can usually find meter parking nearby. As my first time to Boston, stopping at Mike's pastry was a have to. The line went pretty quickly, and the employees were very fast and efficient at getting everyone their order. They had a large selection with many different flavor, choices and combinations. I have to say my expectations were quite high, but I wasn't as impressed as I was expecting to be. For me, it was too much filling and too sweet. But my friends absolutely loved theirs so maybe a different flavor for me would be the trick. Overall, I would still go back again and it's absolutely worth a stop! Parking would have definitely been difficult however I walked from my hotel so it wasn't too difficult for me. I'd never been to this location before. I've only been to the one in the North End previously. Service was fast and lovely. There was only one other customer in the entire store. We got lobster tail, fudge brownie, a tiramisu slice, and strawberry cheesecake. It has a more contemporary feel than the north end location, and slightly more upscale than their north station hub location. The quality of the cannoli are fantastic and the pistachio is amazing. We were told that Mikes is a Boston institution, but as we were walking around the city it seemed we were the only people without a Mikes pastry box so we had to go. The selection of pastries especially the cannoli is overwhelming, and was very difficult to make a decision so we bought more than we needed to. First the cannolis, we got 4 different flavors all very good but the one that really stood out was the Nutella one. OMG! It was so good. The one downtown always had a line and we were going to visit Harvard anyways so when I saw mikes pastry's with no line I know I needed to jump in. We got one amorino cannoli and one mint chocolate chip. I will say- this is from a point of view of someone who doesn't love canollis. We got the Hazelnut and a Blueberry Marscapone as well as a Lobster Tail. The Blueberry was a new item and the filling was ok. The shells of both were too hard for my liking. Modern Pastry's was better, seemed fresher and lightly crispy. The filling on the "hazelnut" had a strange aftertaste too like city water, couldn't finish it. Worst of all was the lobster tail. It was huge and filled with tons of filling but the shell was tasteless and stale and hard and the filling was bland. To top it off they charge more than other places. We sort of stumbled upon cannoli's on our recent trip to Boston.
