There are other options for cannolis in the North End but I'm glad we went with this bakery. I've had many cannolis in the past and I couldn't say before trying Modern Pastry that they were among my favorite desserts. These were amazing cannolis and now among my favorite desserts. They have a long line and it is a cash only business so come prepared.

Every visit to Boston, we always go to Moden Pastry! It's a must for us! What a treat today, we dined in with table service! Itbeen years and usually too crowded to wait for a table. Their pastries are amazing as take out, but to enjoy them there with a nice hot drink; best thing ever! I ordered a regular (ricotta) cannoli with chips and a hot tea. My husband ordered a chocolate ganache with coffee. He stated it was the best coffee he had ever had!! The ganache desert waa excellent. My cannoli was heaven! I have had a lot of cannoli but nothing beats Modern Pastry. Shells are great )made in Sicily). They fills them while you wait. So fresh! I have been coming here since I was a young child, they taste as good as they did back then! Cash only, that too hasn't changed! We had a great server. Staff is always nice and patient!

You walk in and it's exactly as you would expect. A like, no frills, cash only and some of the best Italian cookies I've ever had. We tried a mini cannoli with ricotta to see which we preferred. Hubby preferred modern while i preferred Mikes, however I could never say no to one or two or three of these bad boys. They are delish!! They also have a restaurant dentists which we weren't aware of. Pretty epic

The bottom line: the best cannoli, period. Fast professional staff (and line), limited seating, and a few cafeteria-like seats.

There's a lot going on in this shop. Upstairs is the bakery, downstairs is a bar/grill. The bar must be popular because people are lining up to get downstairs. Upstairs is cafe style seating where we found ourselves. We had to get a cannoli of course but didn't love how sweet it was. My friend tried the pistachio martini but didn't even finish it because it was too artificial in flavoring. Maybe this place is better downstairs, but I wouldn't come back for the bakery. Also cash only

Classic Italian bakery in Bostons North End. While the lines can be sometimes long, the lines move quick. Line is kept orderly by a staff at the door. There's also a sit down cafe area, and a full bar in the basement. The cookies, pastries, cakes - always fresh and delicious. We had a key lime tart (great flavor); pistachio mousse cake; and a Bomba slice with layers of yellow cake, ricotta / canolli filling topped with marzipan - this was excellent. Service excellent. Don't be afraid to ask about the different desserts and such, the staff is patient and friendly. Reminder - cash only.

The cannoli at Modern Pastry Shop is by far my favorite one in Boston! I can say this confidently after doing some market research to get to the bottom of this. That being said, make sure you order the cannoli. I love how thin and crisp the shell is, and the pastry cream is rich and extremely flavorful. The best part is that it wasn't too sweet. You can choose your shell, filling, and toppings. While you're there don't miss out on their other desserts that might tempt you from the display. They have pretty much every Italian classic pastry that you can think of including the prettiest black and white cookies I've ever seen. The bakery is small and cozy, but there are are a few seats open at the window if you'd like to sit. We were served quickly, and did not have to wait in line late on a Saturday morning. As a heads up, this is a cash-only bakery, so please make sure to plan your trip accordingly. They also do sell coffee and other Italian staples and dry goods if you're interested.

A local told us this was the better of the two pastry shops. We went to both and this one seemed superior. My husband was looking forward to trying the cannoli with pistachios and he really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the hostess. Loved the ganache on it. There were tons of good things there and would love to try more when I go back for work.

    Worth the trip!!

The BEST chocolate chip cookie in New England. Take it from a person who knows....the cookie at Modern is untouchable. I have read so many reviews about different stops that I should make but I do not see any place coming close or topping Modern The price, the size and, of course, the taste are unmatched. Make the trip for the Holidays and load up! I am very confident that you will agree. Modern has two locations (Hanover St, North End of Boston and Salem St, Medford, MA) 5-stars...no doubt Price is reasonable Parking can be tough in the North End & easier in Medford Vibe- great..usually a line which creates a festive atmosphere Will I be back? you better believe it!

One of the many pastry shops in the Downtown Boston Area. This one must be good! There was an hour plus line out the door! We spoke to the manager about getting a table instead of the grab and go. They were able to accommodate our large party with a reasonable wait time! The coffee good and fresh and the pastry's were delicious! The fruit tart we had was out of this world!

    Creme Brulee with fruit!

Everything we had was delicious. Decadent and indulgent...all of those types of adjectives. I'm not a cannoli fan, so I didn't try them. They have pre packaged assorted cookies, if you can't decide, just grab one of those - don't hold up the line behind you! LOL Also, look at the yelp pictures to get an idea of what you might want BEFORE you arrive. The lines are intense as are the personalities if you are undecided. The staff is very nice and patient...the customers waiting...not so much. LOL The line is usually out the door. There are tables you can sit at to enjoy a treat or 5. It's very crowded, meaning there isn't a lot of personal space. Be prepared. My husband loved the different fruit tarts - he raved about the quality of the fruit and the crust. I got a piece of chocolate cake and carrot cake, soooooo goood!!!!! I highly recommend stopping here for a few treats :)

Tiramsu, Cannoli and other items we took home

I knew in Boston that we had to check out at least one popular pastry shop and Modern Pastry Shop was the winner that we chose - mostly because of their Lobster Tail. We arrived at North End around 7pm and got in line - we waited around 20 minutes or so. We ordered a slice of their Tiramisu, a Cannoli, a Lobster Tail and a couple of other items that looked too good to pass up. There were so many items to choose from - they even had Dubai Chocolate and whole cakes for sale! We loved EVERYTHING we bought - the Lobster Tail took me 4 days to finish and that was with help, but it was so worth it! The inside of Modern Pastry Shop is small, but they still offer tables and it is well organized with how they help the never ending long line of customers. Staff was also really helpful and friendly! I will absolutely visit again next time we are in Boston! Check them out!

It is a bakery with every Italian American dessert you can think of! They do accept cards and cash. They have both to go orders or you can seat down, order a pastry and some coffee and relax. To go orders come in a box and you go to the back to place your order. My mission was to try the cannoli and sunce they do sell minis with no minimum I got the original one with ricotta filling and chocolate chips, it was delish! A good stop to get that sugar craving gone!

Outside - Neon signs for Modern Pastry and Cafe Paradiso are visible on a city street at night, with parked cars and illuminated trees.

I had ordered for pickup for a designated time, however finished my meetings sooner than expected and so arrived there around an hour early and asked if they could prepare the food at that time and they very kindly did. It was a 15-20 minute wait but that was totally fine! The space is cozy and quite crowded as always. Like that they added the extra doorway for winter to keep the inside warm. I ordered the chicken & vegetable soup - I think Tatte's version might be my favorite chicken soup - it's just right with the mix of tender chicken, veggies and has white beans- mild flavors- yummy!! I want to try and recreate it at home one day. The chicken pita sandwich is another favorite- really hearty with plenty of chicken and love the cucumbers and tomatoes and the sauce - perfect! I also ordered the salmon dish with the seasonal veggies- the crust was so crispy - it felt like the skin but didn't look like it very curious! Lots of food - had enough for leftovers for another lunch!!

The meal options are all on laminated pages instead of on a big board, but they did have a lot of good options. We started with regular drip coffee which was ready quickly and we could sweeten to our liking. We tried the house breakfast which was two eggs any style (got them fluffy and scrambled), crispy bacon, cheesy potato fritters with tomato jam (similar to ketchup), and sourdough bread (we asked for butter) it was all very filling and some nice spins on a traditional breakfast. The bakery selection is out of this world - from breakfast pastries to delicately crafted desserts. The cinnamon and pecan rose was just like the center of a cinnamon bun, which was fantastic. It was big enough for two people to indulge without overdoing it. There weren't a lot of outlets, so not ideal for long term laptop use, but the food came quickly, it wasn't too loud even with a ton of people coming in and out. The prices were reasonable, and everything tasted amazing.

Unfortunately there is a not a clear online menu that is up to date with all the restaurants and their individual menus on the main Time Out Market website. You have to go into each restaurant and look at their online ordering POS to get to the menu. It was hard to decide what to eat because I could not look at all the options all at once, i had to walk around and look at the individual restaurant menus one at a time. I ended up choosing the Italian food place POE-lenta. I had a very tasty Creamy Chicken Rigatoni. It came with spicy crushed red pepper and grilled lemon as well. It was a good choice and was enjoyable. I did not finish all the chicken but it was pretty good. I also ordered a very yummy mocktail from the bar. I got a Coco Pom, which the bartender described as kind of a pina colada without the rum and with a pomegranate twist. It was really good, I drank it all. They also have convenient cups and a water tap to fill your water by the the two bars. The restroom was huge and very nice, but the stalls are so dark inside, the lighting was so dim I could not really see anything. I think the building should really work on those light levels. There was some appearance of construction ongoing in the hallway to the restrooms. Time Out is a great place to stop and spend some time, with great food, drinks, and atmosphere.
