Stumbled upon Blackbird Doughnuts as they were in the only building we could find with a public restroom. I am glad we stopped in because it led us to find these incredible doughnuts. I asked the employee working if they were a chain and she explained they are a chain local to Boston. She also shared the doughnuts are made fresh every morning. They had a display case with the donuts featured and they sure looked great. We were pleased to find the actual donuts looked even better than the display! Both of our donuts were huge and the frosting/filling proportions were generous. The menu consists of classics and then a featured monthly selection. I picked a classic doughnut: chocolate sprinkle. My husband went with a may selection: cherry jam Bismarck. We both loved our selections. My husband said cherry filling is rare and the flavor was spot on. To be honest my only regret after how delicious we found the donuts to be is not getting more. read more

Really good place for donuts, coffee and breakfast. Sometimes there is a line, and you will have to wait a little bit for your food. They open at 8 AM, but they don't necessarily have everything ready at 8 AM sharp, so you will have to wait. If you are in a rush, better off go to another place nearby that opens earlier and get out of the door. read more

I ordered donuts and coffees. Coffee was really good actually, but they forgot part of my order and the donuts were super dry and kinda of chewy? Very bread-y donuts. Since it's primarily a donut shop and their donuts are dry, I would not go there for that again. In all honesty, I'm not much of a donut fan, but if I had to have a donut, it would be one of the ones from Blackbird. Their donuts are nice and cakey and don't feel overly greasy. However, they are on the heavier side, so they're not the kind of donuts you can have a bunch of in one seating. I haven't been to the actual donut shop, as I tried them at an event, so I can't comment on the service, but I'd imagine it's a pretty casual spot. Great option if you'd like to cater them for an event. The best part about these donuts is the various flavors. I love having the ability to pick from some of the more unique ones, especially if they have toppings. However, you can't go wrong with a classic vanilla or chocolate cake donut. Staff was friendly and super quick. This is a stall in the middle of Smith Campus Center which is so spacious so the ambiance is always great. They really got lucky with such a great location, especially since it's right next to the rooftop garden. I got the matcha cheesecake, which is filled with matcha and cream cheese creme and has cheesecake crumble on top. The donut was very fluffy and it was good but I was a little disappointed. It was a bit too oily and too sweet. I couldn't taste the matcha at all, but I could see it. The creme was very sour? My friend and I kept wondering if they added lemon in addition to the cream cheese because it's not just the sourness of the cream cheese. I've been here twice with friends and so far I've tried the Vanilla Glazed donut, Blackbird donut, the Everything bagel donut, the Ice cream cake donut, and the Mango Mojito donut. The classic flavors (the Vanilla Glazed donut and Blackbird donut) were slightly underwhelming. I liked the Vanilla Glazed donut for its airy and light texture, but I felt as if the Blackbird donut wasn't worth the price since it was too dense and significantly smaller than the other donuts even though they were the same price. You could get these flavors elsewhere and be just as satisfied. I was more satisfied with the unique donuts. One of my favorites was the Everything Bagel donut. The dough was fluffy and soft to bite into. Eating it can be a bit messy when eating since there are Everything Bagel toppings that fall off when you bite into it. The cream cheese filling itself was very tasty. I found that the Ice Cream Donut was sweet and tasty. I liked the chocolate filling that accompanied the donut. Although the filling was nice, it became overwhelming after a few bites and would spill out while biting into the donut. Something unfortunate is how they package their donuts. I wish that the donuts were put into a small box instead of a paper bag as the donuts get squished and stuck to the sides of the bag if you don't eat them right away. Went to Harvard square the other day. I was doing a mini Burger tasting tour with my son. There is a bunch of burger joints in Harvard Square. So after our fill of Burgers we wanted something sweet. I always wanted to give Blackbird Doughnuts a try. It was right around the corner from where we where so we went in. We suddenly found ourselves in College Millennial Central. Blackbird Doughnuts is tucked inside this. I must say very architecturally cool Lounge Study Building. As for Blackbird Doughnuts itself I was not impressed at all, $3.25 each for doughnuts we had only about 5 flavors to choose from. The Coffee was well just average Coffee. I was all so boring the space it was in just made me want to fall asleep. We just wanted to get out of there. Again just a Borefest... nothing special here. Just go to Dunkin Doughnuts. Everything with Blackbird is hit or miss. Either the staff are friendly or you're getting glared at. Either the online ordering works or it's down for weeks at a time without explanation. Either there's an interesting vegan offering or everything is just gross sloppy fruit stuff for months on end. Altogether it feels like they rode the tail end of the donut wave, and every time you bite into a donut that looks fresh but tastes like they just took the 7/11 shrink wrap off of it you know that the trend is very much over with. read more

There are some really fascinating flavors like the everything bagel doughnut (it's got a classic everything topping with cream cheese on the INSIDE) and my personal favorite, the sticky bun (super sweet, but really delightful combo of cinnamon and cream cheese)! Blackbird also serves two types of doughnuts, regular and cake, which are made with a cake batter. They're a little too thick for my taste, but definitely worth a try if you've never had one before! Be aware that this is NOT a standalone store - it's a little counter inside of the Smith Campus Center, a public study space that many tourists and students frequent. This means that there are rarely any seats available, so be mindful if you're coming by at a busy time. I'm also not a huge fan of their coffee. Yeast doughnuts are airy and pillowy. A lot of cream inside the Everything Bagel Doughnut. Winter citrus was okay, too. But I don't like the Candy Cotton Blood Orange doughnut, which is cake doughnut. It's too sweet and a bit soggy (maybe too much oil or sugar). I am a big fan of cake donuts! These definitely do not disappoint. They are moist and fluffy and the icing is delicious! I love their seasonal flavors- particularly the purple cow and the cookie dough one but today I was feeling something lighter so I went with the two classic cake donuts. They are a bit pricey but I wanted something just a little sweet and they met my expectations! Stopped in for dessert after my friends and I grabbed lunch in Harvard Square. We shared the pumpkin cheesecake, vegan blueberry, and mocha chocolate donuts. All three were delicious! The pumpkin cheesecake was overflowing with a custard-like cream cheese filling. The mocha chocolate had a delightful cake like texture, and was topped with tiny chocolate chips. My favorite was probably the blueberry donut, actually. I was a bit reluctant to try this because it's vegan, but it had a light ginger flavor that was really unique and special. They also serve coffee and tea. The new Smith Center, where Blackbird Donuts is located, has plenty of seating. Perfect if you're looking for a nice coffee shop to read or do work! Having lived in Portland, ME, with easy access to the Holy Donut and Urban Sugar, I was determined to find a new favorite donut place when I moved to Boston. While it does not make it to my top three best donut places of all time, so far Blackbird's Boston creme is my favorite donut in Boston. I've tried a few other flavors, but none of them hit the right notes like the Boston creme did. The combination of airy dough, vanilla custard, and chocolate glaze is sinfully delicious. This is a kiosk-style store situated within the Smith Campus Center in Harvard Square, which makes it a good spot to get coffee/doughnuts while studying. I generally go here for coffee and it's actually a large quantity of really good coffee for decent prices. The doughnuts are decent, nothing mind-blowing but good overall. They do a nice classic vanilla glazed, and I really love their everything bagel doughnut -- brioche filled with whipped cream cheese and topped with toasted garlic, onion, sesame, and poppy seeds. It's an absolutely delicious sweet-but-also-kinda-savoury calorie bomb. Some of their other flavours are really inventive and interesting too (want to try the orange cranberry fritter, and the vegan lemon coconut). They have good vegan options. I don't love the dry caky texture of their cake doughnuts. (This may be a personal preference against cake ones, but they just weren't great). Really dense, really heavy and hard to finish. They use a Fazenda blend, and provide you with a punch card so if you visit 10 times you'll get a free coffee or donut! I've never bought a donut but have tried some. They're known for inventive flavors like "Everything Bagel" or "PB&J" and definitely higher quality than Dunkin'. A great coffee/breakfast stop in the square. read more
