I went in to browse before my Uber arrived and left with more donuts than I expected. That Dubai chocolate bar caught my eye haha. It was fantastic. The dark chocolate on top which was not too sweet. The filling had (I assume) crispy vermicelli and I've never tried anything like it before. It gave it crunch with every bite and the cream itself was also tasty. Very creative and well executed. I also got the salted brown butter crueller which as others have mentioned was quite dense but I still enjoyed it, especially the icing. Ambiance is mostly takeout, and service was quick and friendly. I'd recommend making your donut decisions before you step in because once you see their case, it's harder haha. read more

Unfortunately the more I have Union Square Donuts, the less I like them. While they have a great variety, the donuts are very dense, even the brioche donuts. The cake donuts are especially dry. The donuts often look better than they taste. I've also tried their special cinnamon rolls and they're too sweet with no cinnamon flavor. There is limited seating and parking nearby. Definitely more of a takeout place. Service is nice and quick, however, one time I bought two donuts and didn't realize I was only given one until I got home. Check your bag/box before you leave to ensure you got everything you ordered. read more

Generally like the coffee and donuts, just wish they were more accommodating. I ordered an iced latte with oat milk but I assume they misheard me and thought whole milk. I went back to the barista and let them know I wanted oat milk. She said no, that I definitely ordered whole milk. Now, I'm lactose intolerant so there is no way I would ever order whole milk. I really wanted to like this place more since I love donuts, and this makes a convenient donut stop while shopping, but the donuts I got here just didn't do it for me. Maybe I just don't like brioche dough, but I found their standard donuts to be quite bready. They don't have the melt-in-your-mouth texture of either cake or yeast donuts. They just taste like bread, and not particularly light or moist bread either. The Dubai chocolate bar donut at least made up for this partially with the filling, which was delicious, even if I wasn't really tasting pistachio. The salted brown butter cruller had a delicious buttery icing, but the donut itself was really unappetizingly greasy and soggy. I can handle greasy when the donut texture is also crisp on the outside, but this was missing that, probably because of how thick the icing was. I could only handle a couple of bites before I had to throw it away. It's too bad because I feel like this place has so much potential. The store is cute with nice window seating, the employees are very nice, and the donuts look amazing. I've always been a big union square donut fan. I love their honey dipped donut, the maple bacon, the brown butter hazelnut crunch. They come out with new flavors and styles pretty often and always have a vegan option for people who prefer that as well! I love that you can see the actual vanilla in their dough. I also like their coffee options. It's a pricey donut compared to Dunkin but definitely on par with other specialty donut shops. Everyone has always been nice in store as well. I definitely recommend trying them out or going to their OG shop in Union Square. Sometimes when you go to a location where they're not fried/made at that site, it might not be the freshest later in the day. But... that's expected. I know people will criticize for that but I don't really expect a freshly fried donut late in the day? read more

I love their original location so I was surprised to see they opened a location at Assembly Row. Donuts are $3.50-$5 each. I got the Vietnamese coffee and jumbleberry. I got the donuts an hour before they closed and the donuts were still good. Not stale (surprising as it was near the end of the day), and both flavors were delicious. I would recommend the jumbleberry to anyone. The workers were helpful and great. I'm visiting so I'm definitely planning on taking some back home with me. read more

What is going on here?! These donuts are the complete antithesis of Krispy Creme! They look and feel like small sculptures; so substantial that they look like they were baked with anabolic steroids. And for that matter the texture and taste are muscular too, not something that I enjoyed at all. Service was excellent, pleasant and patient. In retrospect they could have warned us that their donuts are not for the faint-of-heart. And I suggest that they change the name of the things to testosteronuts for a more apt description in the future. We got a dark chocolate frosted and a honey glazed to share. The frostings were not quite sweet enough, making the taste profile off-balance compared to Dunkin' and Krispy Creme. The breading was like chewing on a dense kaiser roll; air pockets with fibrous, non-sweet dough. I suppose that the many positive reviews on Yelp are from folks that enjoy "eating with their eyes" and are looking for a pastry that will hold up submerged in coffee or paint thinner for that matter. We had a delicious couple of donuts from here. Our favorite was the creamee. I love maple creamees in VT (maple soft serve), and these donuts definitely evoke that maple flavor. Yeast donut that is a little salty sweet, kind of pretzel-y, with a light maple frosting, and bits of maple candy (what a treat)! I am definitely a Kane's faithful, but when I new place opens, I always have to try it. I've had Union Square Donuts before and thought they were awesome so I wanted to try the Assembly Row location. I went around 8:30 AM and got the Banana Pudding Donut, the Blueberry Muffin Donut, and an Iced Matcha Latte. The total was about 18 bucks. The donuts were absolutely phenomenal and worth the money for the size. They were soft and fluffy and the filling was out of this world. The matcha latte was good but a little too pricey for the size. I will definitely come back and try more donuts in the future though!! read more

What a disappointment. My friend and I stopped by because all the donuts on display looked so good. While we were in line, the person in front of us even raved about the Butter Pecan French Cruller and how amazing it was. We decided to split the cruller and it was the biggest letdown. Got off a redeye, was told we're stopping at the donut place. I bolted in on 3 hours sleep to see what they had, and if there were any vegan options. Yes. Yes there were. I think 4 and given it's June I went for the Pride sprinkle one. The place was spotless, the staff were super friendly just after opening, and I got my donut. Lemme tell you, this is one of the best donuts I've ever had, especially vegan. It was so doughy and almost like a smidge of a mochi donut texture with the chewy aspect to it. Im a huge apple cider donut fan, so I had to get the apple cider donut, and the vegan chai apple cider donut. I liked the chai one better! The apple flavors were stronger on that donut than the regular apple cider donut. The apple cider donut didn't have enough apple flavor (for me). Lemon Poppy Seed Cake Donut is a great idea, but the donut was hard and tough. That's a sign that the donut wasn't fresh. Blackberry Basil Lime, also hard and tough, but I also just tasted blackberry frosting. No lime or basil. Vietnamese Coffee tasted fine but was also hard and tough. Hard and tough is something I want from a car tire, not really a positive attribute for a donut. Union Square is starting to slip. I can think of many donut places that are a better value for $25. Located in Assembly, Union Square is open 7 days a week. These are probably the best donuts I've had in Boston due to the quality of their bread/dough. At $3-$4 a donut, these aren't your average Dunkin' donuts. Which is great because that means these donuts differentiate themselves and offer something new. Their flavors are creative and artistic and very aesthetic. They're even more aesthetic than Blackbird, which I think is their most comparable competitor in the region. The interior and exterior of the building are very clean, which you'd expect given they just opened up this week. I think their quality is better than Blackbird though. Their Mojito and Brown sugar donuts shared the same, consistent texture: soft and some other X factor that's hard to describe. Their Mojito had a lime taste to it and the Brown Sugar tasted like something a health aficionado would go after. All in all, I'll be visiting here again! read more

Not very exciting at all. It's definitely not worth the hype, and wasn't satisfying in any way. I'd rather make the drive to Kanes or to the OG location. We stopped by this location while we were in Assembly Square as I had expressed a craving to get some doughnuts, and we had heard some hype about how Union Square doughnuts have some of the best doughnuts in Boston to offer. On the positive, it's a nice looking location with an impressive visual display of doughnuts. Each doughnut looked like an impressive piece of artwork! They also used real fruit in their jam-filled doughnuts, which is a plus. The coffee was pretty good as well. However, if I am to be honest, this is one of those instances where the food looked better than it actually tasted. The chocolate doughnut I had was dry and felt stale, as if it was left out for a few nights. It's the kind of stale dry that rubs and scratches your mouth wrong when you eat it. It certainly did not seem fresh. What made it kind of edible was the copious amounts of sugar accessories it was topped with (which made me feel sick from all the sugar anyway). Unfortunately, I don't think its worth the ~$5 price per doughnut. To be perfectly honest, I think I would have enjoyed doughnuts from Dunkin Doughnuts or the grocery store instead at about a quarter of the price. This place has a lot going for it (location, visuals, good-looking artistic doughnuts that are decorated with a lot of intention), but fresh softness in the pastry is to be desired. I've had the OG union square donuts and these did not deliver. I had two donuts from this location: the tiramisu and caramel apple cream bar. The only redeeming thing about these donuts was that they were nicely fried and proofed. Unfortunately the flavor was lack luster. The cream filling in the apple bar was an unpleasant flavorless. The texture was a mixture of gelatin and overset egg custard; with the teensiest hint of apple. When paired with the actual donut it was essentially flavorless. The tiramisu's cream was a better texture, but suffered the same lack of flavor. When paired with the acutely donut; all I could taste was the dusting of cocoa powder on top. Swing and a miss. Donuts are like eating stale bread...the texture is dry and they are tasteless!! My wife and I both got the Belgian chocolate covered donut and neither of us got halfway through before chucking them in the garbage.
