I've been meaning to finally try these but hadn't had much of a sweet tooth...until Monday. My friends and I quickly stopped in Monday morning and would've paid for the smell of the store alone. The staff was super nice, and patient, as I decided on which 6 donuts to get. The stars of the show were the Boston crème and the cake batter. Yum!! You could tell how fresh they were. There was a perfect amount of filling where it wasn't soggy or too dry. I definitely recommend bringing these somewhere where a group of people can split them. Stopped into Blackbird and tried the iced Ube latte was so good! I got it with oat milk and it was perfect! Not too sweet and just the right balance of flavors. The color is also gorgeous!! I ordered online (on Toast) so my order was ready once I got there which was great! The service was friendly. The inside is small but clean. Perfect for checking out the donuts. It's mainly an order to go place unless you want to sit on the bench outside. I also got a couple donut holes, which were delicious and perfect to pair with the drink. I tried the vegan brioche and cinnamon sugar (also vegan). Both were fantastic! Pleasantly surprised with the vegan options for both the drinks and the donuts. Highly recommend! read more

I've tried many donut places in Boston and blackbird is still comes out on top. Can't beat their blackbird and salted toffee donut. Recently they started serving savory pastries and breakfast sandwiches in their Fenway location. The spinach artichoke galette is incredible!!! The donuts were on the larger side. I tried six donuts ($3.50 each). Funfetti - This was tasty, but not really a funfetti flavor. It was mostly just a sweet buttercream. Chocolate Covered Banana - This was a banana icing with a little bit of chocolate. I would have preferred more of a combination of the two, but it tasted mostly like banana. I personally prefer the texture of their brioche doughnuts over their cake doughnuts, but their excellent and inventive flavors always win me over. My favorites over the years have been the Tiramisu Bismarck, Cold Brew Coconut, and Snow Ball. This location doesn't have seating, except for a bench outside. I usually come on weekday mornings to avoid the weekend lines and to make sure flavors don't sell out. Their service is also excellent. Two years later and I've finally tried a different donut. The everything bagel donut is a very strange experience but it's delicious. I would definitely recommend this one for anyone like me who loves fruit-flavored desserts. Also notable was the ice cream cake donut, which is actually not a cake/old-fashioned donut, but it does have an ice cream filling. The ice cream seemed to be coconut-based and perhaps vegan. Came here for some coffee and doughnuts before a Red Sox game. The place is small and is take out only. I was hoping they at least had a few tables to sit down, enjoy some warm doughnuts with coffee. Unfortunately I had to look for a bench outside across the street to sit down. I ordered a cup of coffee, a Boston cream, and their Everything bagel doughnut. Definitely something new. A doughnuts covered in everything ingredients sliced like a bagel with cream cheese in the middle. Tasted just like an everything bagel, with the doughnuts being softer and more airy then a more dense bagel. The Boston cream was also tasty. The cream filling was good and not that nasty gooey stuff you get at DD. Wouldn't mind coming back for some doughnuts next time I'm in town and in the area. read more

The donuts are displayed in a strange case inside the counter that is only clear on top, meaning you can only see them when you are actually at the register and looking down at the counter. I'd suggest the owners move the donuts to a display case on the counter so you can see it from anywhere in the shop to reduce congestion/wait times. -Pricey @ $3-4 each, but on par with Union Square. -- Triple Chocolate Chocolate cake donut with a very thin layer of frosting and chocolate sprinkles. I loved the rich texture, but didn't get any chocolate taste--it just tasted heavy/oily. I also thought it needed a bit more frosting since I didn't taste it at all! I'd consider getting it again, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Boston Cream Brioche yeast donut topped with chocolate and filled with vanilla custard. I found it the dough to be way too heavy/fried, though the custard was refreshingly light. I probably would not buy again, but will say I found this to be much better than the Union Square competition since the chocolate was less bitter and the dough was slightly less fried tasting. The Blackbird ($3.21) This is their signature namesake flavor--a vanilla bean glazed cake donut. They call it an "old fashioned" but it's not a traditional old fashioned with an uneven crispy exterior and a soft interior--this is just a plain glazed cake donut. It's super soft throughout, and the glaze is decent, but the base dough is so bland it could easily become savory without the glaze. I didn't taste any vanilla flavor. Also, their cake donuts aren't dry in the sense that they taste stale, but when you eat them you definitely need a drink nearby because they stick to your mouth in an unpleasant way. It was a struggle to finish this one! Would not recommend. Vegan Blackbird This is not a cake donut, despite the description. This was seemingly a glazed yeast donut. It was lightly sweetened (not super glazed), but mostly tasted like pizza dough because of the chewiness. I didn't hate it, but definitely would not buy again. Vegan Chocolate "Chip" Again, this is a yeast and not a cake donut. It was glazed with a chocolate ganache that was the highlight of this donut, and topped with some Ruffles chips that were a bit stale. Still, I think I'd get this over the plain vegan glazed because of the chocolate. -- Overall, I haven't found a donut here yet that is worth the price, but I'd still consider trying again given that Blackbird is one of the few places in Boston putting out creative donut flavors. They also seem a little less heavy/oily than USD's donuts, which I appreciate! The vegan donuts aren't great if you can have regular. If you don't have an option, they're not the worst vegan donuts I've had, but still have issues with being a bit too chewy. read more

I generally order delivery for various reasons. I used to like to treat myself once a month on a weekend when the new specials came out. Now? Not so much. It's unbelievable to me that a shop will regularly fulfill orders incorrectly. Sometimes up to 75% wrong. And you can't tell me it's because I ordered too late--sometimes my order was the third of the day. So either they don't care to provide the right donuts, they do it on purpose, or they don't keep their menu up to date. Either way, it's disappointing every time, and I can't even say whether or not the donuts are good because I never get the ones I order. Maybe they're good in person. Whatever you do, don't misunderstand: I'm not hating on Dunkin' Donuts. Dunk's donuts are okay for the mass-produced things they are, though the bar isn't set particularly high. Therefore, I would hope a small business would be able to beat them. Alas, even being the first one here one morning, my donut tasted day-old, if not a little stale. On my first visit, I had the Cannoli Donut. I enjoyed the creativity employed, and I don't recall the cream/ricotta being overly sweet. On the flip-side, however, I found the donut to be fairly dense, and not in a positive way, if you know what I mean. If I were to guess, I'd say it had to do with texture as much as flavor. Imagine a doughy slice of wonder bread versus a slice of whole grain. Not a great metaphor, but I think It'll do. On my second visit, I had a more garden-variety donut, though I don't remember the exact flavor. I do recall the stale quality of the dough as if it was cooked the day before. If I was here towards the tail-end of the day, this might be forgivable. Alas, I was the first customer through the door. Furthermore, having experienced Kane's donuts fresh, they blow these out of the water. There's just no comparison. The location itself is tiny, don't even count on snagging a high-chair by the window, there aren't any. The coffee is okay, nothing remarkable, and no espresso-based options. No complaints regarding the service. In closing, a charming location with some creative donuts is overshadowed by a lack of freshness and quality. In light of this, there are probably better places to spend three bucks on a donut, like Kane's, even though it may be a couple quarters extra. read more

As someone who became lactose intolerant, I've struggled with finding dairy free donuts that taste like the real thing. They never have the proper doughy texture or the "yeasty" taste of a properly risen donut. While Blackbird only has a few vegan options (they only had 2 vegan donuts when I went, and you have to ask which ones are vegan) the ones they do have are amazing. I got the boysenberry jam donut and mango mojito and both exceeded my expectations. My favorite out of the two was the boysenberry one because of how simple yet delicious it was. The donut is soft brioche bread with jam, lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar. I couldn't stop myself from finishing this one and I still crave it today (a little dramatic, but true) The mango mojito is a mango flavored glazed donut with a sour candy gummy as deco. This one was pretty great too and I finished it soon after the first one (maybe one too many sweets for the day but there were no regret). If the vegan donuts are this good, I can't imagine how the regular ones taste like. Definitely a must try for donut lovers. read more

I've been a loyal patron of Blackbird basically since they opened, so much so that we had them cater a dessert wall at our wedding (which was EXCELLENT). On this particularly balmy winter day (it was in the 70s), we got a cold brew float and the ice cream cake yeasted doughnut. Both were excellent as expected -- the cold brew is good (Fazenda) standalone, and with the ice cream shaped into ice cubes, it's extra fun with the taste improving as the flavors combine. The doughnut didn't taste too much like ice cream cake per se, but that's forgivable since the doughnut is just so damn good. Fun sprinkles on top, beautiful rich mousse within, and the perfect, fluffy doughnut encompassing it all like a hug. Come here. Best doughnuts in Boston. Awesome flavors, cool staff. read more
